  5. After stopping an md device, the sysfs and /dev entry should be
  removed:

  mdadm --stop /dev/md0  && [ "`test -e /sys/class/block/md0`" = "1" ]; echo $rc
  should return 0;

  6. /dev/md0 is gone, but /sys/class/block/md0 remains

Bug description:
  On my laptop the kernel will sometimes drop the USB hub. After this,
  the laptop doesn't recognise any device plugged in to the USB ports -
  plugging and unplugging any device I've tried into any of the USB
  ports produces no response, not even dmesg entries.

  Strangely this also applies to bluetooth - it no longer works once USB
  has dropped (possibly the module is hung of the bus internally).

  Once this has happened only a reboot fixes it; I've not managed to
  find any combination of module unload/reload or suspend cycles to
  reinitialise things correctly.

  Relevant snippet of dmesg:

1. Comment #16 is the issue now?
2. What release do you use now? Do you still use Trusty?

  [HP 15-r085no Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)] Suspend/resume freezes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  My HP notebook won't wake from suspend with 16.04 LTS, waited for the
  latest 4.4.0-36 kernel update before reporting this bug. Computer goes
  to suspend, but attempts to wake it up just start the fan (and HDD)
  while the display remains black.

  Also tested this with the mainline upstream kernel
  4.8.0-040800rc3-generic. With this version there was different
  behaviour but still a bug: the display woke up but Ubuntu was very
  unstable, did not connect to Wifi and the GUI froze very soon after
  resume.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1602888] Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

2017-04-16 Thread Occams Beard
I've changed the status of the bug to "Confirmed". It lets me change
the status for some reason. I guess because I originally submitted the
bug.

A while back someone from canonical set it as "Fix Released," but like
everyone else, I still have the bug with latest versions of everything.
So I have no idea what the supposed fix is, or even if there is one.

For everyone else with this bug, the better bug report is probably here
on the Linux Kernel bug tracker:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=153281

Title:
  Dell Inspiron 7559 fans do not shut off once started, even when cool

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Running Ubuntu 16.04 on a Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop there appears to
  be an issue with the fan control. When I first boot up the machine the
  fans are off. However, after the laptop warms up under normal usage,
  the fans kick on and then never shut off again. Even when the CPU
  cools down to below 35c, the fans will continue to run.

  If I suspend the the laptop, and then immediately wake it up again
  then fans are once again off, until it warms up again. So
  essentially, once the fans start they don't seem to ever shut off.

  Fans seem to work normally under Windows 10. They turn on as needed,
  and then turn off once the laptop cools down.

  I've tried the various BIOS updates that Dell has released, without
  success. I am currently running Dell's latest BIOS for this laptop

2017-04-16 Thread Julo Petko
I do not understand why the bug is closed. I have Ubuntu 17.04 with the
latest updates on my Dell Inspiron 7559 with the latest BIOS 1.2.2 and
the problem still persists. Fans are still on, but the CPU temperature
is about 30deg. Celsius. If others having the same problem, we should
reopen this bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1674838] Re: kernel BUG at /build/linux-7LGLH_/linux-4.10.0/include/linux/swapops.h:129

2017-04-16 Thread Mathieu Marquer
Update from me, the patch for my display crash has been included in 4.11
RC5, and I'm not encountering the kernel bug anymore there, so it's 99%
definitely fixed in 4.11 branch.

  Grub works, entering full disk encryption passphrase works, but when the
desktop comes up mouse and keyboard (via USB) are dead and the desktop also.

  booting the PC without the stick attached works fine, but as soon as

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 344878] Re: file name too long when creating new file (ecryptfs_lookup: lookup_one_len() returned [-36] on lower_dentry)

2017-04-16 Thread Nicola Bernardelli
@baltic +1 At least a warning **should** be issued when offering to
encrypt the home folder, clarifying what the length limits are with and
without that encryption. The limit is not **at all** hard to hit, I hope
a solution will be implemented.

Bug description:
  ===
  IMPORTANT: eCryptfs can only store filenames of up to 143 characters when
filename encryption is enabled. The remaining 112 characters are used for
storing metadata such as the encrypted filename prefix, the signature of the
filename encryption key, and an identifier for the cipher used, as well as
random bytes to make /foo/file and /bar/file encrypt to different ciphertext
and padding bytes to achieve proper cipher block size alignment.

  This bug is considered 'fixed' by the upstream maintainers. The
  eCryptfs kernel error message has been reduced to a debug level log
  message and eCryptfs now correctly reports its maximum supported
  filename length through the statfs() syscall. This is all that can be
  done without implementing a completely new encrypted filename design.
  A design that allows 255 character filenames without introducing other
  design limitations has not been identified and no one is currently
  working to come up with such a design.

  Please do not add comments or create new bugs saying that mv reports
  'File name too long' or that you can't create a long filename in your
  eCryptfs mounts. It is an unfortunate design limitation that cannot be
  avoided at this time.

  Please do create new bugs when an application generates filenames that are
too long to be stored in an eCryptfs mount. The application may be able to use
the statfs() syscall to check the filename length limits of eCryptfs. Note that
this does not include something like a torrent or ftp client trying to download
a file with a long filename. The application is not generating the filename in
those cases, it is just downloading the file that the user told it to download.

  When trying to create a new file with a relatively long filename (f. ex.
dfkmqsdgjfmqsldjfmlsqkjlqkdmfsmgjlqlskdqshgpoizehmlqkbgmlqbgmqbdfkmqsdgjfmqsldjfmlsqkjlqkdmfsmgjlqlskdqshgpoizehmlqkbgmlqbgmqbdfkmqsdgjfmqsldjfmlsqkjlqkdmfsmgjlqlskdqshgpoizehmlqkbgmlqbgmqb.txt)
  I get an error: file name to long, when in fact the file name is not to long,
but the encrypted name created for this file is to long, so, the file was not
created.

  this is no problem when I try to create a file, but when I'm copying a
  lot of files to my home folder I get some: filename to long error's
  and it's hard to fix (first locate the file, create shorter name, move
  again)

  so, maybe you could create a check for to long filenames?

  I'm using ext4 here...

 * turn on laptop, and boot Xubuntu 17.04
 * Login

Expected results:
 * Connected to internet, able to use touchpad/trackpoint

Actual results:
 * At least 1 time out of 4 a lot of devices are not detected during boot
 * There is no WiFi device
 * There is no touchpad/trackpoint device (plugging in an external mouse works)
 * Keyboard still works

Workaround:
 * sudo udevadm trigger
 * all devices get detected and working

Also reproducible when running on battery.
Note: I've only seen this bug on this device, my 2 other devices (a Dell
Latitude E7470 laptop, and an AMD FX desktop) do not have this bug.

See attached tarball for lspci/lsusb/dmesg/journal outputs from a good,
and 3 bad boots.

Here is what happens after udevadm trigger, but the kernel should be able to
detect all this on its own during boot, without needing a manual udevadm
trigger!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1671360] Re: System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)

2017-04-16 Thread Dominique Joye
Thanks to Marc, the sequence: install 16.04.1, install the kernel update
and then nvidia drivers, patched of course seems to work on Gigabyte 350
Gaming 3.

Title:
  System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm trying to run ubuntu on Ryzen 1700x with Gigabyte GA-AB350-gaming-3
motherboard,
  and it has a load of problems, starting with not being able to boot normally.

  During normal boot, on 16.10 as well as 17.04 beta:
  system doesn't boot normally, hangs with a lot of "unexpected irq trap at
vector 07"
  messages displayed.

  Following advice from various places, I've tried:disable cpu freq governor
and cpu handling in acpi settings

  1. add "acpi=off" to boot params

  That helps, allowing me to boot into recovery mode, though it leaves
  me with system seeing only one core, is really slow and still only
  boots in recovery mode.

  2. Compile own kernel using 4.11.rc1 and disabling cpu freq governor
  and cpu handling in acpi settings. Boot with "quiet loglevel=3"
  option.

  That gets me even further - system sees all cores now. Still only recovery
mode though,
  but its enough to get info for this bug report.

  Some observed problems:

  1. dmesg reports *a lot* of messages like this all the time:

  [  163.362068] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362081] bad_chained_irq+0x0/0x40
  [  163.362089] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362090] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362090] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [  163.362090] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362090] ->action(): 884601c0
  [  163.362091]IRQ_NOPROBE set
  [  163.362099] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362099] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362100] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [  163.362100] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362101] ->action(): 884601c0

  I've tried to redirect dmesg to a file, stopped after a short while,
  it generated 400M of those.

  2. Systemd cannot start journald. Perhaps because it cannot cope with
  amount of kernel logs?

  3. Looking at pci, I've noticed something called AMDI0040
  (/sys/bus/acpi/devices/AMDI0040, path=_SB_.EMMC), among AMDI0010,
  AMDI0020, AMDI0030. Those however are mentioned in kernel source,
  kernel and google are completely silent about AMDI0040.

  Phoronix tested ryzen using different motherboard, and it worked better
(though not well),
  so I suspect it is an issue with motherboard.
