[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1671360] Re: System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)

2017-05-06 Thread Jaka Jaksic
If pinctrl causes issues with certain hardware, but is required for
certain other hardware, and if it isn't possible to automatically
determine which is which, then it would make sense to make it
controllable through a boot flag (like acpi=off).

While having to specify a boot flag is still less than ideal, it is far
preferable to having installing a different distro or build a custom
kernel.

Title:
  System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm trying to run ubuntu on Ryzen 1700x with Gigabyte GA-AB350-gaming-3
motherboard,
  and it has a load of problems, starting with not being able to boot normally.

  During normal boot, on 16.10 as well as 17.04 beta:
  system doesn't boot normally, hangs with a lot of "unexpected irq trap at
vector 07"
  messages displayed.

  Following advice from various places, I've tried:disable cpu freq governor
and cpu handling in acpi settings

  1. add "acpi=off" to boot params

  That helps, allowing me to boot into recovery mode, though it leaves
  me with system seeing only one core, is really slow and still only
  boots in recovery mode.

  2. Compile own kernel using 4.11.rc1 and disabling cpu freq governor
  and cpu handling in acpi settings. Boot with "quiet loglevel=3"
  option.

  That gets me even further - system sees all cores now. Still only recovery
mode though,
  but its enough to get info for this bug report.

  Some observed problems:

  1. dmesg reports *a lot* of messages like this all the time:

  [  163.362068] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362081] bad_chained_irq+0x0/0x40
  [  163.362089] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362090] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362090] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [  163.362090] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362090] ->action(): 884601c0
  [  163.362091]IRQ_NOPROBE set
  [  163.362099] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362099] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362100] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [  163.362100] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362101] ->action(): 884601c0

  I've tried to redirect dmesg to a file, stopped after a short while,
  it generated 400M of those.

  2. Systemd cannot start journald. Perhaps because it cannot cope with
  amount of kernel logs?

  3. Looking at pci, I've noticed something called AMDI0040
  (/sys/bus/acpi/devices/AMDI0040, path=_SB_.EMMC), among AMDI0010,
  AMDI0020, AMDI0030. Those however are mentioned in kernel source,
  kernel and google are completely silent about AMDI0040.

  Phoronix tested ryzen using different motherboard, and it worked better
(though not well),
  so I suspect it is an issue with motherboard.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1065400] Re: Support for loading Broadcom bluetooth firmware

2017-05-06 Thread hanasaki
What is the license issue? Is there a URL to the actual license? Some
way to contact who put the license in place to request a change allowing
resolution of this?

BTW, I tried the manual download. It finds my device now however will
not pair.

Bug description:
  Broadcom bluetooth chips require a tool called patchram uploader [1]
  to load firmware. This applies to at least BCM20702 and BCM43142.
  Although some of the devices have an OTPROM that contains required
  firmware, but it is found that these devices would not have HFP/HSP
  support unless a upgraded firmware is loaded via patchram uploader.

  This tool requires hci device to do the firmware loading, but this may
  cause some race condition between patchram tool and bluetoothd or
  something that also works on hci interface.

  Also it needs some hooks to make firmware loads after bootup, s3, s4,
  rfkill, and device hotplug events. Implement this loader in kernel
  module would make things more easier.

Title:
  System crash on a machine without swap

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  From a long time, I use a machine without swap, because most of the
  time if I run out of memory, swap would save me at too high a cost
  (waiting for a long time).

  Yesterday, I upgraded from 16.10 to ubuntu 17.04 and changed my
  sessions from unity to gnome.

  The bug occurs as firefox is requesting more memory, and about 10/15% memory
is still free.
  First Firefox freeze, I try to kill -SIGKILL it without success, then whole
system freezes. It happens three times today.

  I attach the kern.log extracts reporting the problem
  Each time I have the same message: kernel BUG at
/build/linux-2NWldV/linux-4.10.0/include/linux/swapops.h:129

  There is no swap partition, and swapinness is set to 0.

  $ tail -n 2 /etc/sysctl.conf
  # I say NO SWAP
  vm.swappiness = 0

  $ LANG=C free -h

  Mem:   7,7G2,1G3,8G433M1,9G

  Also:

  $ LANG=C systemctl --type swap
  0 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
  To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

  $ LANG=C systemctl list-unit-files --type swap

Title:
  "kernel BUG" reported in dmesg with VMWare and Ubuntu 17.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  This has happened to me several times in the last few days since I
  upgraded from VMWare 12.5.2 and Ubuntu 16.10 to VMWare 12.5.5 and
  Ubuntu 17.04. The crash has thus far always been associated with
  firefox and leaves an un-killable zombie firefox process that requires
  a reboot.

  1. The ardware is virtual. (VMWare)
  2. I'm not sure how to reproduce it, since it seems to happen randomly, but
fairly frequently.
  3. The bug didn't occur before the upgrade to VMWare 12.5.5 and Ubuntu 17.04.

  Please note that I had to run "ubuntu-bug linux" after rebooting
  because running it before rebooting just hung the process.

  I will attach a "cut here/end trace" section of the dmesg log
  separately.

Title:
  The whole system froze for something like 30 seconds, then a process
  got killed

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Upgraded from xenial to zesty recently.

  I was using a Firefox instance, one which is a part of Tor Browser
  Bundled. First, the application window grayed out, then the whole
  system froze for something like 30 seconds (I tried to switch to VT1
  to no avail), then the process got killed.

  Well, not exactly killed.

  The grayed-out window is still there, `xprop | grep PID` and clicking
  on it gives:

  ```
  _NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL) = 13
  ```

  PID 13 is a child of kthreadd:

  ```
  $ ps -A | awk '$1 == "13" { print }'
     13 ?00:00:00 cpuhp/1
  ```

  And this is how the relevant part of `ps -AH` with the "killed"
  process looks like:

  ```
   5709 pts/11   00:00:00   firejail
   5710 pts/11   00:00:00 firejail
   5725 pts/11   00:00:00   bash
   5736 pts/11   00:56:49 firefox
   5769 pts/11   00:00:24   tor
  ```

  EDIT: Launchpad doesn't preserve whitespace apparently, so I'm adding
  the output above as ps.log.

  I checked syslog and dmesg. Both of them have an interesting and
  identical message, which I add as dmesg.log.

  I also add the output of `cat /proc/version_signature` as version.log.

  I don't think `sudo lspci -vnvn` is relevant here, so I'm not gonna
  share it unless absolutely necessary.

  The crashed process will be there for something like 2 or 3 days at
  least (I don't restart my laptop often), so feel free to ask me to
  manipulate or query it somehow, if necessary.

  ```
  _NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL) = 13
  ```

  PID 13 is a child of kthreadd:

  ```
  $ ps -A | awk '$1 == "13" { print }'
     13 ?00:00:00 cpuhp/1
  ```

  And this is how the relevant part of `ps -AH` with the "killed"
  process looks like:

  ```
   5709 pts/11   00:00:00   firejail
   5710 pts/11   00:00:00 firejail
   5725 pts/11   00:00:00   bash
   5736 pts/11   00:56:49 firefox
   5769 pts/11   00:00:24   tor
  ```

  EDIT: Launchpad doesn't preserve whitespace apparently, so I'm adding

  I checked syslog and dmesg. Both of them have an interesting and
  identical message, which I add as dmesg.log.

  I also add the output of `cat /proc/version_signature` as version.log.

  I don't think `sudo lspci -vnvn` is relevant here, so I'm not gonna
  share it unless absolutely necessary.

  The crashed process will be there for something like 2 or 3 days at
  least (I don't restart my laptop often), so feel free to ask me to
  manipulate or query it somehow, if necessary.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:

  I was using a Firefox instance, one which is a part of Tor Browser
  Bundled. First, the application window grayed out, then the whole
  system froze for something like 30 seconds (I tried to switch to VT1

  Well, not exactly killed.

  The grayed-out window is still there, `xprop | grep PID` and clicking
  on it gives:

  ```
  _NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL) = 13
  ```

  PID 13 is a child of kthreadd:

  ```
  $ ps -A | awk '$1 == "13" { print }'
     13 ?00:00:00 cpuhp/1
  ```

  And this is how the relevant part of `ps -AH` with the "killed"
  process looks like:

  ```
   5710 pts/11   00:00:00 firejail
Hans, do you additionally experience random and complete freezes without
  upgraded from VMWare 12.5.2 and Ubuntu 16.10 to VMWare 12.5.5 and
  firefox and leaves an un-killable zombie firefox process that requires
  a reboot.
  1. The ardware is virtual. (VMWare)
  2. I'm not sure how to reproduce it, since it seems to happen randomly, but
fairly frequently.
  3. The bug didn't occur before the upgrade to VMWare 12.5.5 and Ubuntu 17.04.
  Please note that I had to run "ubuntu-bug linux" after rebooting
  because running it before rebooting just hung the process.
  I will attach a "cut here/end trace" section of the dmesg log
  separately.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1683091] Re: The whole system froze for something like 30 seconds, then a process got killed
2017-05-06 Thread throwaway45224
Unfortunately, there's no reliable way to reproduce it, but similar
issues happen quite regularly. There were at least 9 cases since I
reported the bug. Sometimes the system freezes completely and I have to
restart, sometimes only one process gets killed, while its window is
still there, doing nothing and being gray. The grayed-out window's owner
(from `xprop | grep PID`) is always PID=13, which is always [cpuhp/1].
Oh, and also, when I say the system freezes completely, it sometimes
might not be entirely true: sometimes I have a web server running and it
still responds to requests; if I have music playing, sometimes it
continues to play even after the freeze. But the system doesn't respond
to any keyboard or mouse events.
I updated the kernel to 4.10.0.20.22 on 2017-04-28 23:44:32.
Subjectively, the issues became even worse and more frequent.
I save syslogs after every freeze or similar event. I will post them
after I prune them. I'm not sure though. Should I post all of them in
this issue or create a new one, which would describe the bug more
accurately? After all, this bug is about a process getting killed after
a short freeze, not about permanent freezes, even though I encounter
both.
Also, am I the only one affected? Really?
  ZFS initramfs mounts dataset explicitly set not to be mounted, causing
Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
Bug description:
  Per https://github.com/zfsonlinux/pkg-zfs/issues/221: the initramfs
  zfs script might overrule canmount and mountpoint options for a
  dataset, causing other mount operations and with them the boot process
  to fail.
  Experienced this with Ubuntu Zesty. Xenial seems to ship with a
  different zfs script for the initrd.
  Work around when it happens: unmount the dataset that should not be
  mounted, and exit the initramfs rescue prompt to resume booting.
Title:
  initramfs-zfs should support misc /dev dirs
Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  New
Bug description:
  Right now 'zfs-initramfs', i.e. /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/zfs
  does not support any other directory than /dev for "zpool import ...".
  Therefore even if a pool gets created from a different directory like
  /dev, say /dev/disk/by-id or /dev/chassis/SYS on next reboot /dev will
  be used and thus zpool status will show the /dev/sd* etc. on
  successful import. Beside that now a user does not see the original
  names used in "zpool create ..." the unstable names like "/dev/sd*"
  are shown, which is explicitly NOT recommended.
  The following patch introduces the "pseudo" kernel param named "zdirs"
  - a comma separated list of dev dirs to scan on import - which gets
  used by /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/zfs to honor it.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1687256] Re: byd touchpad no longer detected
2017-05-06 Thread Daveh
Thanks for the help and advice so far. Before making an upstream bug report I
would like to be sure that is necessary, as I believe the problem relates to
the patch referred to in bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1424293.
What has actually happened is that my touchpad has reverted to the condition
prior to BYD patch implementation described in this bug report.
Title:
  byd touchpad no longer detected
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Bug description:
  When running on kernel 4.8.0-34 my Lafite byd touchpad is recognised
correctly and shows with xinput --list as BYDPS/2 BYD Touchpad.
  If I use any higher upgrade, eg 4.8.0-46 in 16.10 then touchpad is only
identified as ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse. The same applies if I try 17.04 from
an external drive, touchpad does not work and cursor remains in top rh corner
of screen.
  This could be related to the changelog
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+changelog
  4.8.0-36.38 in yakkety-proposed
    * Yakkety update to v4.8.13 stable release (LP: #1650581)
  ...
  - Input: psmouse - disable automatic probing of BYD touchpads
  Any thought on what has changed and how to resolve issue so that I can
upgrade to later version?
  Thanks
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1688890] Re: initramfs-zfs should support misc /dev dirs
2017-05-06 Thread Jens Elkner
** Patch added: "honor misc /dev dirs"
Title:
  initramfs-zfs should support misc /dev dirs
Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  New
Bug description:
  Right now 'zfs-initramfs', i.e. /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/zfs
  does not support any other directory than /dev for "zpool import ...".
  Therefore even if a pool gets created from a different directory like
  /dev, say /dev/disk/by-id or /dev/chassis/SYS on next reboot /dev will
  be used and thus zpool status will show the /dev/sd* etc. on
  successful import. Beside that now a user does not see the original
  names used in "zpool create ..." the unstable names like "/dev/sd*"
  are shown, which is explicitly NOT recommended.
  The following patch introduces the "pseudo" kernel param named "zdirs"
  - a comma separated list of dev dirs to scan on import - which gets
  used by /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/zfs to honor it.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1684010] Re: 17.04, i915 freeze on VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
2017-05-06 Thread Traumflug
I just booted 4.10.0-18 and graphics apparently fell back to software
rendering. Only one screen size (1600x1200) available, animations run
very slow, CPU fan spins up when moving windows, such things.
Will run this for two days to see wether it's at least not freezing.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1662589] Re: Touchpad not working correctly after kernel upgrade
2017-05-06 Thread Paul Donohue
Sounds like they want both the Xenial and Yakkety kernels tested.  You
should be able to install the yakkety kernel on Xenial if you don't want
to upgrade now.
It may be easier to just grab the relevant packages from the launchpad page:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/12486778/+files/linux-image-4.4.0-78-generic_4.4.0-78.99_amd64.deb
  It is the same for both kernel updates since 4.4.0-31.  If I boot from
Sorry, Kai_heng, I upload attached details on my previous post as "files.tar.xz"
What need you?
Do you think this random problem may be related to ubuntu not detecting the
touchpad as touchpad if not as generic mouse?:
  Hello,
  Randomly the touchpad pointer moves to one end of the screen, and we have
found that when it does message appears in dmseg:
  psmouse serio1: Explorer Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
  synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away.
  Sometimes it happens after 10 minutes of use, sometimes it happens after 3 or
4 hours.
  We have tested several computers with touchpad "Hantick", that use the both,
the evdev library and the libinput library. It always happens randomly.
  Thanks,
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686268] Re: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot
2017-05-06 Thread Domizio Demichelis
1. The real value of the current brightness (e.g. 75)
2. As I said: after the reboot that value is the same (e.g. 75)
3. As soon as I move the slicer in the Gnome Shell Panel, the new value gets
saved into the file (e.g. 150)
To explain you better: it looks like the value in that file is kept in
sync with the actual brightness on the screen, i.e. as soon you change
the brightness with the slider or with the hardware key its value gets
stored in the file. A reboot doesn't change the value in the file (i.e.
it still is the same as before the reboot), but it looks like the
service doesn't restore the brightness by using the value (i.e. the
brightness of the screen is full brightness) and you have to restore it
manually or with an @reboot entry.
  Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Bug description:
  I am not sure if this is the right place to report this, so feel free
  to move it elsewhere.
  It looks like the systemd-backlight service (/lib/systemd/system
  /systemd-backlight@.service) does not restore the brightness level
  (although it saves it before shut-down).
  However the following command does restore the saved brightness:
  sudo /lib/systemd/systemd-backlight load backlight:intel_backlight
  As a temporary solution to automate it at boot I am using the
  following line added to the root cron:
  @reboot /lib/systemd/systemd-backlight load backlight:intel_backlight
  - Ubuntu 4.10.0-20.22-generic 4.10.8
  Please, let me know if you need more info. Thanks.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1604313] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: system freezes instead of suspend after undocking
2017-05-06 Thread Dennis
@Julius Thor: Unfortunately I couldn't reproduce your workaround. Once I
undock my laptop in the closed state it does not resume anymore.
Currently I am running
Linux thinkpad 4.4.0-77-generic #98-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 26 08:34:02 UTC
2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The only "solution" seems to be upgrading to the hwe kernel as
brandon211 mentioned. According to Christopher M. Penalver we need to
perform the SRU Procedure if we want a fix for kernel 4.4.0
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure).
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686268] Re: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot
2017-05-06 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Ok, I think I should ask more explicitly:
1. What's the value of '/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness' before
reboot?
2. What's the value after reboot?
3. What do you mean "that value is saved as soon as I change the brightness"?
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686268] Re: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot
2017-05-06 Thread Domizio Demichelis
Yes, that value is saved as soon as I change the brightness. After
reboot the brightness value is not restored (indeed the back-light is
actually full brightness), although the value in that file is still the
saved one.
However running the `sudo /lib/systemd/systemd-backlight load
backlight:intel_backlight` restores the brightness to the exact value in
the file.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04
2017-05-06 Thread Axel Schmidt
Thanks to Ruslan Gol, this worked for me too!
I have a lenovo thinkpad p51s with a SAMSUNG MZVLW512HMJP-000L7 512gb ssd and
kubuntu 16.10.
After update the kernel to 4.9.0-040900-generic, shutdown only need some
seconds and not minutes like before! And no cfs-unmount timeout errors
anymore...
Title:
  Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus
  x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the
  shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system
  just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen
  showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown"
  and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine
  won't turn off.
  I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it
  hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo
  stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the
  end.
  The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the
  google results of the past month / week or so.
  I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and
  all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but
  unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation
  occurred.
  Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work.
  Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue.
  So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press
  the power button on the keyboard continuously.
  Reproducible: Always
  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.Install OS
  2.Do something, anything or nothing
  3.Try to shutdown or reboot
  Actual Results:
  The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there.
  Expected Results:
  Powering off the machine.
  For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but
  using the menu buttons for suspension will do it.
Title:
  System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  I'm trying to run ubuntu on Ryzen 1700x with Gigabyte GA-AB350-gaming-3
motherboard,
  and it has a load of problems, starting with not being able to boot normally.
  During normal boot, on 16.10 as well as 17.04 beta:
  system doesn't boot normally, hangs with a lot of "unexpected irq trap at
vector 07"
  messages displayed.
  Following advice from various places, I've tried:disable cpu freq governor
and cpu handling in acpi settings
  1. add "acpi=off" to boot params
  That helps, allowing me to boot into recovery mode, though it leaves
  me with system seeing only one core, is really slow and still only
  boots in recovery mode.
  2. Compile own kernel using 4.11.rc1 and disabling cpu freq governor
  and cpu handling in acpi settings. Boot with "quiet loglevel=3"
  option.
  That gets me even further - system sees all cores now. Still only recovery
mode though,
  but its enough to get info for this bug report.
  Some observed problems:
  1. dmesg reports *a lot* of messages like this all the time:
  [  163.362068] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362081] bad_chained_irq+0x0/0x40
  [  163.362089] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362090] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362090] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [  163.362090] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362090] ->action(): 884601c0
  [  163.362091]IRQ_NOPROBE set
  [  163.362099] ->handle_irq():  87a7e090,
  [  163.362099] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200
  [  163.362100] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20,
  [  163.362100] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120
  [  163.362101] ->action(): 884601c0
  I've tried to redirect dmesg to a file, stopped after a short while,
  it generated 400M of those.
  2. Systemd cannot start journald. Perhaps because it cannot cope with
  amount of kernel logs?
  3. Looking at pci, I've noticed something called AMDI0040
  (/sys/bus/acpi/devices/AMDI0040, path=_SB_.EMMC), among AMDI0010,
  AMDI0020, AMDI0030. Those however are mentioned in kernel source,
  kernel and google are completely silent about AMDI0040.
  Phoronix tested ryzen using different motherboard, and it worked better
(though not well),
  so I suspect it is an issue with motherboard.
