[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1671360] Re: System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen)
If pinctrl causes issues with certain hardware, but is required for certain other hardware, and if it isn't possible to automatically determine which is which, then it would make sense to make it controllable through a boot flag (like acpi=off). While having to specify a boot flag is still less than ideal, it is far preferable to having installing a different distro or build a custom kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1671360 Title: System doesn't boot properly on Gigabyte AM4 motherboards (AMD Ryzen) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I'm trying to run ubuntu on Ryzen 1700x with Gigabyte GA-AB350-gaming-3 motherboard, and it has a load of problems, starting with not being able to boot normally. During normal boot, on 16.10 as well as 17.04 beta: system doesn't boot normally, hangs with a lot of "unexpected irq trap at vector 07" messages displayed. Following advice from various places, I've tried:disable cpu freq governor and cpu handling in acpi settings 1. add "acpi=off" to boot params That helps, allowing me to boot into recovery mode, though it leaves me with system seeing only one core, is really slow and still only boots in recovery mode. 2. Compile own kernel using 4.11.rc1 and disabling cpu freq governor and cpu handling in acpi settings. Boot with "quiet loglevel=3" option. That gets me even further - system sees all cores now. Still only recovery mode though, but its enough to get info for this bug report. Some observed problems: 1. dmesg reports *a lot* of messages like this all the time: [ 163.362068] ->handle_irq(): 87a7e090, [ 163.362081] bad_chained_irq+0x0/0x40 [ 163.362089] ->handle_irq(): 87a7e090, [ 163.362090] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200 [ 163.362090] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20, [ 163.362090] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120 [ 163.362090] ->action(): 884601c0 [ 163.362091]IRQ_NOPROBE set [ 163.362099] ->handle_irq(): 87a7e090, [ 163.362099] amd_gpio_irq_handler+0x0/0x200 [ 163.362100] ->irq_data.chip(): 88587e20, [ 163.362100] ioapic_ir_chip+0x0/0x120 [ 163.362101] ->action(): 884601c0 I've tried to redirect dmesg to a file, stopped after a short while, it generated 400M of those. 2. Systemd cannot start journald. Perhaps because it cannot cope with amount of kernel logs? 3. Looking at pci, I've noticed something called AMDI0040 (/sys/bus/acpi/devices/AMDI0040, path=_SB_.EMMC), among AMDI0010, AMDI0020, AMDI0030. Those however are mentioned in kernel source, kernel and google are completely silent about AMDI0040. Phoronix tested ryzen using different motherboard, and it worked better (though not well), so I suspect it is an issue with motherboard. --- ApportVersion: 2.20.4-0ubuntu2 Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 17.04 InstallationDate: Installed on 2015-08-06 (581 days ago) InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 15.10 "Wily Werewolf" - Alpha amd64 (20150728.1) Package: linux (not installed) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_US:en TERM=linux PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash Tags: zesty Uname: Linux 4.11.0-rc1-custom x86_64 UnreportableReason: The running kernel is not an Ubuntu kernel UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to zesty on 2017-03-03 (6 days ago) UserGroups: _MarkForUpload: True To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1671360/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This tool requires hci device to do the firmware loading, but this may cause some race condition between patchram tool and bluetoothd or something that also works on hci interface. Also it needs some hooks to make firmware loads after bootup, s3, s4, rfkill, and device hotplug events. Implement this loader in kernel module would make things more easier. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1674838 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1674838 ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1674838 kernel BUG at /build/linux-7LGLH_/linux-4.10.0/include/linux/swapops.h:129 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1688643 Title: "kernel BUG" reported in dmesg with VMWare and Ubuntu 17.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This has happened to me several times in the last few days since I upgraded from VMWare 12.5.2 and Ubuntu 16.10 to VMWare 12.5.5 and Ubuntu 17.04. The crash has thus far always been associated with firefox and leaves an un-killable zombie firefox process that requires a reboot. 1. The ardware is virtual. (VMWare) 2. I'm not sure how to reproduce it, since it seems to happen randomly, but fairly frequently. 3. The bug didn't occur before the upgrade to VMWare 12.5.5 and Ubuntu 17.04. Please note that I had to run "ubuntu-bug linux" after rebooting because running it before rebooting just hung the process. I will attach a "cut here/end trace" section of the dmesg log separately. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1683091] Re: The whole system froze for something like 30 seconds, then a process got killed
Unfortunately, there's no reliable way to reproduce it, but similar issues happen quite regularly. There were at least 9 cases since I reported the bug. Sometimes the system freezes completely and I have to restart, sometimes only one process gets killed, while its window is still there, doing nothing and being gray. The grayed-out window's owner (from `xprop | grep PID`) is always PID=13, which is always [cpuhp/1]. Oh, and also, when I say the system freezes completely, it sometimes might not be entirely true: sometimes I have a web server running and it still responds to requests; if I have music playing, sometimes it continues to play even after the freeze. But the system doesn't respond to any keyboard or mouse events. I updated the kernel to 4.10.0.20.22 on 2017-04-28 23:44:32. Subjectively, the issues became even worse and more frequent. I save syslogs after every freeze or similar event. I will post them after I prune them. I'm not sure though. Should I post all of them in this issue or create a new one, which would describe the bug more accurately? After all, this bug is about a process getting killed after a short freeze, not about permanent freezes, even though I encounter both. Also, am I the only one affected? Really? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1683091 Title: The whole system froze for something like 30 seconds, then a process got killed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Upgraded from xenial to zesty recently. I was using a Firefox instance, one which is a part of Tor Browser Bundled. First, the application window grayed out, then the whole system froze for something like 30 seconds (I tried to switch to VT1 to no avail), then the process got killed. Well, not exactly killed. The grayed-out window is still there, `xprop | grep PID` and clicking on it gives: ``` _NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL) = 13 ``` PID 13 is a child of kthreadd: ``` $ ps -A | awk '$1 == "13" { print }' 13 ?00:00:00 cpuhp/1 ``` And this is how the relevant part of `ps -AH` with the "killed" process looks like: ``` 5709 pts/11 00:00:00 firejail 5710 pts/11 00:00:00 firejail 5725 pts/11 00:00:00 bash 5736 pts/11 00:56:49 firefox 5769 pts/11 00:00:24 tor ``` EDIT: Launchpad doesn't preserve whitespace apparently, so I'm adding the output above as ps.log. I checked syslog and dmesg. Both of them have an interesting and identical message, which I add as dmesg.log. I also add the output of `cat /proc/version_signature` as version.log. I don't think `sudo lspci -vnvn` is relevant here, so I'm not gonna share it unless absolutely necessary. The crashed process will be there for something like 2 or 3 days at least (I don't restart my laptop often), so feel free to ask me to manipulate or query it somehow, if necessary. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1687256] Re: byd touchpad no longer detected
Thanks for the help and advice so far. Before making an upstream bug report I would like to be sure that is necessary, as I believe the problem relates to the patch referred to in bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1424293. What has actually happened is that my touchpad has reverted to the condition prior to BYD patch implementation described in this bug report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1687256 Title: byd touchpad no longer detected Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: When running on kernel 4.8.0-34 my Lafite byd touchpad is recognised correctly and shows with xinput --list as BYDPS/2 BYD Touchpad. The same applies if I try 17.04 from an external drive, touchpad does not work and cursor remains in top rh corner of screen. Sounds like they want both the Xenial and Yakkety kernels tested. You should be able to install the yakkety kernel on Xenial if you don't want to upgrade now. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686268] Re: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot
1. The real value of the current brightness (e.g. 75) 2. As I said: after the reboot that value is the same (e.g. 75) 3. As soon as I move the slicer in the Gnome Shell Panel, the new value gets saved into the file (e.g. 150) To explain you better: it looks like the value in that file is kept in sync with the actual brightness on the screen, i.e. as soon you change the brightness with the slider or with the hardware key its value gets stored in the file. A reboot doesn't change the value in the file (i.e. it still is the same as before the reboot), but it looks like the service doesn't restore the brightness by using the value (i.e. the brightness of the screen is full brightness) and you have to restore it manually or with an @reboot entry. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1686268 Title: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I am not sure if this is the right place to report this, so feel free to move it elsewhere. What do you mean "that value is saved as soon as I change the brightness"? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1686268 Title: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I am not sure if this is the right place to report this, so feel free to move it elsewhere. It looks like the systemd-backlight service (/lib/systemd/system /systemd-backlight@.service) does not restore the brightness level (although it saves it before shut-down). However the following command does restore the saved brightness: sudo /lib/systemd/systemd-backlight load backlight:intel_backlight As a temporary solution to automate it at boot I am using the following line added to the root cron: @reboot /lib/systemd/systemd-backlight load backlight:intel_backlight - Ubuntu 4.10.0-20.22-generic 4.10.8 - Gnome 3.24 Please, let me know if you need more info. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1686268] Re: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot
Yes, that value is saved as soon as I change the brightness. After reboot the brightness value is not restored (indeed the back-light is actually full brightness), although the value in that file is still the saved one. However running the `sudo /lib/systemd/systemd-backlight load backlight:intel_backlight` restores the brightness to the exact value in the file. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04
Thanks to Ruslan Gol, this worked for me too! I have a lenovo thinkpad p51s with a SAMSUNG MZVLW512HMJP-000L7 512gb ssd and kubuntu 16.10. After update the kernel to 4.9.0-040900-generic, shutdown only need some seconds and not minutes like before! And no cfs-unmount timeout errors anymore... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1594023 Title: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown" and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine won't turn off. I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the end. The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the google results of the past month / week or so. I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation occurred. Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work. Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue. So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press the power button on the keyboard continuously. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install OS 2.Do something, anything or nothing 3.Try to shutdown or reboot Actual Results: The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there. Expected Results: Powering off the machine. For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but using the menu buttons for suspension will do it. 2. Those however are mentioned in kernel source, kernel and google are completely silent about AMDI0040.
