[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1598637] Re: Dell Inspiron 5555 touchpad not working

2017-07-15 Thread jeremy-list
This bug report is only for the touchpad issue: it's not the correct
place to ask about battery issues.

Title:
  Dell Inspiron touchpad not working

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Installed Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit (also Linux Mint and other Ubuntu 16.04
based distros) on my Dell Inspiron AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6.

The touchpad sort-of works for a few seconds (pointer moves but
cliking fails) and after a while it hangs completely. The USB mouse
  works with no issues though.

I've found following the steps given here
  http://askubuntu.com/a/632570/55128 works:

  1. Run
  $ sudo -H gedit /etc/default/grub

In the open window edit line

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

  it should look this way

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nopnp"

  Save file and run

  $ sudo update-grub

  2. Run
  $ echo "blacklist i2c_hid" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i2c-hid.conf
  $ sudo depmod -a
  $ sudo update-initramfs -u
  $ echo "synaptics_i2c" | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

  3. Reboot.

  Description:

  - The tochpad works ok for a while, then after some time it stops responding
to finger input.
  - There seems to be a correlation bwetween the touchpad failure and a running
a heavy program, like LIBREOFFICE.
  - Plugging in an extenral mouse is a solution (of sorts).
  - After a while the touchapd resumea normal activity.

WiFi comes up, lasts a few seconds - maybe up to a few minutes, then

Restarting the network manager service usually restores the connection

Running a VPN over the wireless adapter causes the dropout to occur

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1649326] Re: EFI stub loader broken in kernel 3.13.0-101-generic (& later in 3.13 series)

2017-07-15 Thread Rod Smith
Dimitrenko, I'm afraid this bug is NOT FIXED. I've just tested with
3.13.0-123 (installed today via apt-get), and the system still hangs
with it.

Joseph, I'm still willing and able to test more kernels.

Title:
EFI stub loader broken in kernel 3.13.0-101-generic (& later in 3.13
  series)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Trusty:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The EFI stub loader produces consistent boot errors when booting
Trusty starting with version 3.13.0-101-generic. This bug can be
reproduced in many ways (using efibootmgr, an EFI shell, rEFInd,
  etc.). One approach is:

  1) Install an EFI shell on the computer and set it as the default boot
 option using efibootmgr.
  2) Copy the kernel and initrd files from /boot to /boot/efi.
  3) Rename the kernel file to use a .efi filename extension.
  4) Reboot into the EFI shell.
  5) Try to launch the kernel with a command like:
 fs0:\vmlinuz-3.13.0-104-generic.efi ro root=/dev/sda2
initrd=\initrd.img-3.13.0-104-generic

The result will be a hung or crashed system. (In VirtualBox, in which
I've tested this, the VM produces a "guru meditation" and the session
  terminates.)

I myself have tested only with the 3.13.0-104 kernel; however, reports
from others indicate that the problem began with the 3.13.0-101
kernel. See this Kubuntu forum thread for details:

  https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?71204-Cannot-load-latest-
  kernels

Note that early on, this thread focuses on rEFInd; however, the bug
can be reproduced with other boot managers, including the EFI shell,
as described in the preceding procedure, so I do not believe this is a
rEFInd bug. rEFInd relies on the EFI stub loader to boot a Linux
kernel, and I believe it's this component that's failing. The problem
does NOT occur when using GRUB to launch the kernel. (GRUB does not
rely on the EFI stub loader.)

I have NOT encountered the problem with Xenial and its 4.4.0-series kernels
(last tested: 4.4.0-53-generic) or Yakkety and its 4.8.0-series kernels (last
tested: 4.8.0-30-generic). I have not yet tested Trusty with kernels from
series beyond 3.13.0.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1683277] Re: Mute key LED does not work on HP notebooks

2017-07-15 Thread Benjamin Halbrock
I do have the same problem on a ProBook 440 G4.
There is a slider for the LED in alsamixer but it doesn't change anything.

Are there any tests I can run?

Title:
Mute key LED does not work on HP notebooks

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Description of problem:
The F6/mute key on the keyboard of HP notebooks often has a built in LED
indicator to show if the sound is muted. The LED state is never toggled. It
will just retain its state, even though the audio is succesfully muted/unmuted.

Tested with HP Envy 15 from 2015. HP Stream 11 from 2015 and HP Stream
  11 from 2016.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

  How reproducible:
  Always.

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Press mute key on HP laptop

  Actual results:
Mute state in software toggles, LED in mute key does not.

  Expected results:
Mute state in software and LED in mute key toggle.

  Additional info:
This happens on kernel 4.8, 4.9 and 4.10. I have not tested any other
versions.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1698616] Re: 4.10.0-22 No longer suspends on Dell XPS 9560

4.10.0-22 No longer suspends on Dell XPS 9560

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have to roll back to -21 to be able to suspend.

Linux XPS 4.10.0-21-lowlatency #23~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Tue May
  2 14:25:44 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

With -22, it doesn't suspend, and has lots of trouble with it.

I expect to be able to suspend when I close the laptop lid, or when I
go to suspend from the power menu. Instead the OS acts like it
suspends, but the laptop doesn't power down anything. The display
remains on, the fans continue to spin. It acts like it has, because it
takes a bit for the keyboard to respond, and the mouse to move again,
and the wifi was disconnected. It's just that the hardware doesn't
  power down at all.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2017-07-15 Thread aljosa
Hello FZ (sirfz), with 17.04 my ELAN touchpad doesn't work after resume
from suspend, and no - I haven't experienced problems that you decribed.
I don't use GNOME Shell so probably that's the reason why our situations
are different.

By the way, I think that it would be a good idea if you report all your/our
problems here (including all problematic DMESG lines) as soon as you can: "Asus
G752VS - new 309 BIOS update coming soon"

Hello, after experimenting few days ago with Ubuntu 16.04.1, 16.10 and
17.04, among other problems I found that touchpad and Fn keys (all
except volume control) doesn't work on my brand new ASUS G752VS.

It is very hard even to try Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04 because of the
missing mouse pointer. This problem must be related to a video driver
because if after installing one is capable to install Nvidia drivers -
problem is solved. This problem doesn't exist both while trying and
  installing Ubuntu 16.04.1!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2017-07-15 Thread FZ
@Jorge to fix headphone jack, you need to use hdajackretask to override
pin 0x16 to Headpohne. This fixes the Headphone jack. However, there's
no way to fix the Microphone jack which doesn't work at all and I found
no way to fix it (had the same problem with my previous G751).

Yes, but it will take a few weeks since I am vacationing abroad. I'll try
it when I get back and let you know how it went.

Title:
Writing to GPT partition on NVM device triggers "Kernel BUG"

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When I try writing a large amount of data to a GPT partition on my NVM
SSD using dd, after a second or so I get "kernel BUG" messages in
dmesg, and the writing comes to a halt. The machine remains responsive
and I can write to other disks, but if I run "sync", it hangs forever.

The bug is 100 % repeatable. To replicate, run:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/nvme0n1p1

This happens only when I write more than 0.5-1.5 GiB to a GPT
partition on the NVM device. The bug does not happen in the following
  cases:

  - writing just 500 MB on a GPT partition
  - writing to the raw device (/dev/nvme0n1)
  - writing to a DOS partition (i.e. when the NVM device is using a DOS style
partition table)

The device in question is a 1 TB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD.
  Ubuntu release: 17.04

I have dmesg logs available of four instances of this happening, with very
similar stack traces. I will be happy to experiment and provide any additional
information you may need.

@Marek, I couldn't get sound working with kernel 4.12 on my laptop.

@Andrei, my sd card reader worked intermittently but since then I

back to try out the latest kernel, but got no success with sound or SD
card reader.

any fixes available so far?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1653456] Re: ASUS G752VS: Touchpad and Fn keys not working (Ubuntu 16.04.1/16.10/17.04)

2017-07-15 Thread FZ
@aljosa, I confirm that the touchpad only works after resume from
suspend. Btw, I'm having another (extremely annoying) problem, whenever
I try to login after resume (or just locking the desktop after idle
time), the desktop freezes for a while before gnome-shell crashes and
restarts (sometimes it freezes indefinitely). Have you experienced
anything similar? I'm unable to pin this down, all I see is "too many
open files" errors in journalctl but couldn't find anything related
(obviously raising the open files limit is not the solution since gnome-
shell shouldn't be opening so many files).

I'm currently on Windows 10, and this bug report is made from Ubuntu
  16.04.1 LiveCD.

I installed Ubuntu 16.10 on my Lenovo Ideapad Flex 4 laptop. Ubuntu does not

I run xinput -list, I do not see the touchpad. I dual boot with Windows 10,
which recognizes the touchpad from Elantech. I searched online for days and I
found Elantech drivers for Ubuntu 14.04, however, I was unable to load older
versions of Ubuntu on my laptop. Do you expect to support the Elantech touchpad
in future updates? I attached a screen shot of my xinput -list output. Please
let me know if you require any additional information. Thank you.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1701857] Re: Kernel Oops - unable to handle kernel paging request; RIP: 0010:[] [] fput+0x5/0x90

2017-07-15 Thread Bartong
Thinking back on system changes I think these issues may have started
occurring roughly the time I installed LXD and started running
containers.

So I've uninstalled LXD and will monitor to see if the issue clears up.

Thanks.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1678477] Re: Kernel has troule recognizing Corsair Strafe RGB keyboard

2017-07-15 Thread Luca Cireddu
Same problem for me using Ubuntu Zesty (17.04)
I noticed two different types of error:
The first one has error code -71, and I don't know what does it means:

Jul 15 10:15:17 achille kernel: [ 202.060450] usb 3-14: new full-speed USB
device number 14 using xhci_hcd
Jul 15 10:15:18 achille kernel: [ 202.800931] usb 3-14: unable to read config
index 0 descriptor/all
Jul 15 10:15:18 achille kernel: [ 202.800934] usb 3-14: can't read
configurations, error -71

The second one has code -110, which seems to be related to a current drain
problem:

Jul 15 10:15:24 achille kernel: [ 209.099650] usb 3-14: new full-speed USB
device number 16 using xhci_hcd
Jul 15 10:15:30 achille kernel: [ 214.483027] usb 3-14: unable to read config
index 0 descriptor/all
Jul 15 10:15:30 achille kernel: [ 214.483029] usb 3-14: can't read
configurations, error -110

This USB keyboard has two USB plugs, one for data and one for power. I
connected both of them to different USB ports in order to have enough
power, but the problem persists.

No problems occurs during UEFI boot, on Grub menu and using other Linux
distributions (some tests on Slackware and Debian, but only for few
minutes on "live boot"). Even Windows seems to have no problems.

Can it be some power management problem of ubuntu linux kernel?
During boot (after Grub), the keyboard leds shut off until all kernel modules
are loaded. After that there are two possible behaviours: everything works
fine, or keyboard doesn't works and you have these messages on syslog.

Title:
Kernel has troule recognizing Corsair Strafe RGB keyboard

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I recently bought a Corsair Strafe RGB keyboard, and while it works
well when successfully recognized by Ubuntu at boot, that doesn't
  always happen.

I see messages like this when booting my desktop up:

[6.619510] usb 3-10: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/all
  [6.619543] usb 3-10: can't read configurations, error -110

They sometimes repeat at 5-second intervals, culminating on a "can't
set config #1" message or even "unable to enumerate USB device". This
happens on the logic that deals with a new USB device being connected,
so when it doesn't work it never gets to the HID drivers part of the
code. When it does, hid-generic is quite able to control the keyboard,
though this message appears on dmesg:

[6.883811] usbhid 3-10:1.2: couldn't find an input interrupt
  endpoint

From what I have been able to determine, the Corsair Strafe RGB has three
inputs, with the last one being used as input/output and having something to do
with the LEDs. It only has a single USB configuration, though I don't know why
it times out.

Searching on Google has a lot of people recommending this userspace
drive to me: https://github.com/mattanger/ckb-next , and I've tried
it, but it seems to be more about programming lighting effects into
the keyboard than in controlling its basic operation, which is all I'm
interested in. Its daemon was supposed to handle that part too, but it
didn't fix those connection errors on boot.

I have the following boot parameter set in my kernel, following advice
from ckb-next's README, but it doesn't see to have an appreciable
  effect on my success rate:

  usbhid.quirks=0x1B1C:0x1B20:0x2448

  ckb-next recommended 0x2408, but I added the HID_QUIRK_MULTI_INPUT
as well in an attempt to improve things, without success.

GRUB is always able to correctly identify the keyboard and get it to
work, too, which makes the fact that the full kernel can't always do
  it a little more frustrating.

I would be happy to provide any extra information you require on this
  issue.
