Bug description:
  Description:Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS

Hi, after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later I cannot backup my Ubuntu VM's
on Hyper-V.
  Microsoft Hyper-v 2012r2 Gen2 VMs

See Attachment for what happens is immediately after backup starts I
  get an error.

Eventually the kernel reports it has run out of memory and the machine
just continuously scrolls errors message related to page allocation.

When reseting the virtual machine no logs can be found of the problem.

Title:
Laptop Wake-up bug from Current Ubuntu 18.04 Kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
The laptop is thinkpad, and when I use testing version of Ubuntu
18.04, close the lip, and then unable to wake up the linux session
again. The screen is fully black.

I found it not a bug from any desktop session managers because all
desktop environments (openbox/mate) will encounter this issue without
  exception.

Once I accidentally close the laptop lip, I have no way to wake it up
(e.g. press power button, ..) but to request for a FORCE-shutdown.

I just confirmed that this bug is from kernel 4.13, and replacing it
into 4.4 from Ubuntu 16.04 will get fixed.

Using the following workaround I can get it to work, but with limited
functionality:

  sudo modprobe -r psmouse
  sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps

The problem with this fix is that two finger scrolling is no longer
possible with the touchpad and the laptop has no other way to scroll.

Title:
hwclock will set the date to 2/2/2080 with given 2/2/80

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  On node lodygin, run:
  sudo /sbin/hwclock --set --date "2/2/80 03:04:00"

Will set the date to 2/2/2080. Thus it failed the hwclock test, which
  expect the output of 1980

This only happen on lodygin, other testing nodes (hainzel, rumford,
  rizzo, fozzie) are good.

This issue has been tested on Xenial and Zesty, they will all behave
  in the same way.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1754836] Re: Failed to activate service

2018-03-11 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The 25 second delay is a standard dbus timeout. I assume you're talking
about:

Mar 10 11:30:25 username-MBB-44608 pulseaudio[1308]: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon
already running.
Mar 10 11:30:49 username-MBB-44608 pulseaudio[1150]: [pulseaudio]
bluez5-util.c: GetManagedObjects() failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut:
Failed to activate service 'org.bluez': timed out
(service_start_timeout=25000ms)

It sounds like maybe your system is launching too many instances of
pulseaudio. The first works and the second fails. I'm not sure how
Xubuntu differs in this respect but I don't think we see the same bug in
standard Ubuntu.

** Summary changed:

- Failed to activate service
+ Xubuntu: [pulseaudio] bluez5-util.c: GetManagedObjects() failed:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.bluez':
timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)

** Also affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

  Description:

Enable support for: "5.2.25.9 Platform Capabilities Structure" in ACPI 6.2A.
This involves NFIT driver changes for the new table, and then detecting if
the platform has cache flush on fail support. If it does, plumb that through as
a region property so that we can pick the proper default to pass to the
dax_write_cache() call in pmem_attach_disk().

Title:
  Bluetooth BCM43142A0 doesn’t work

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I’ve installed ubuntu 14.04 and my computer’s builtin bluetooth
(computer is an Asus x550ln) doesn’t work at all. Bluetooth is not
displayed in the menu bar, if I open the bluetooth UI and switch on,
nothing happens and the result of “hcitool dev” is empty.

I have tried to install the windows driver with ndiswrapper, and the
bluetooth device seems to be detected as an usb bluetooth device but
still not working. I then add the device to the bluetooth usb device
and was able to activate bluetooth in the UI but it does not detect
any other devices (I’ve tested with a smartphone).

The driver I have installed can be found in asus page =>
  http://www.asus.com/fr/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X550LN/HelpDesk_Download/
Select Windows OS, then “bluetooth” section, take the Broadcom driver
  (should be the first one).

If you extract this archive, you will find a file named “bcbtums-
win8x64-brcm.inf” which I installed using the following command:

  ndiswrapper -i bcbtums-win8x64-brcm.inf

Then, the result of “ndiswrapper -l” is:

  bcbtums-win8x64-brcm : driver installed
device (04CA:2006) present

in usb-devices, I find a device which was not present before
installation (I might have activated btusb before on this paste):

  T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=05 Cnt=02 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
  D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=01 Prot=01 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
  P: Vendor=04ca ProdID=2006 Rev=01.12
  S: Manufacturer=Broadcom Corp
  S: Product=BCM43142A0
  S: SerialNumber=B8EE6593D989
  C: #Ifs= 4 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr=0mA
  I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=btusb
  I: If#= 1 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=btusb
  I: If#= 2 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=(none)
  I: If#= 3 Alt= 0 #EPs= 0 Cls=fe(app. ) Sub=01 Prot=01 Driver=(none)

  then, “echo "04ca 2006" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/btusb/new_id”, and I
can switch usb on, but no device will be detected and I’ve found this
  in the dmesg:

  [2200.843126] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x1003 tx timeout

which looks pretty much like a “bluetooth not working” message which I
  don’t understand in details.

I leave here my full dmesg:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

2018-03-11 Thread Peshmerge Morad
I have bought a new Asus Vivo Book pro, and I have the same problem.
In the beginning I couldn't install Ubuntu 16.04 at all. I could do that by
changing acpi=off in the grub file to get over the problem. The installation
was always stuck at "Preparation for install".
Now after installing the Ubunut 16.04 it takes more than a minute to reboot of
shutdown ! I hope this will be fixed soon!

Title:
Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is about a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install on a new laptop (asus
x540sa). After pressing the shutdown button in the start menu; the
shutdown procedure starts and in the final splash screen the system
just hangs. Tried a second time by pressing Esc once the splash screen
showed up and I saw that it reaches the line "Reached target shutdown"
and just stops there, no matter how long I leave it there the machine
  won't turn off.

I also tried a Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install on the same machine and it
hanged too at the final splash screen where the pulsating logo
stopped. Then I tried with Esc only to see the exact same line in the
  end.

The issue seems to affect lately quite many users as shown by the
google results of the past month / week or so.

I have also tried shutting down from the console with shutdown -and
all the parameters after that suggested online- and sudo poweroff but
unfortunately they didn't do the trick. The exact same situation
  occurred.

Unmounting the swap as suggested online doesn't work.

Also rebooting the system is not working either due to the same issue.

So right now the only way for me to poweroff the machine is to press
the power button on the keyboard continuously.

  Reproducible: Always

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1.Install OS
  2.Do something, anything or nothing
  3.Try to shutdown or reboot

  Actual Results:
The computer is not shutting down: "Reached target shutdown" and hangs there.

  Expected Results:
  Powering off the machine.

For what it's worth, closing the lid won't suspend the system, but
using the menu buttons for suspension will do it.

  ## Original Bug Description#
I've updated the machine to the linux-hwe kernels, and experienced an almost
instant crash when booting. Nothing is shown on the VGA output, so no stack
traces are available.

I've tried booting a few kernels with the following results:

  - linux-image-4.8.0-56-generic + linux-image-extra-4.8.0-56-generic: boots up
fine
  - linux-image-4.13.0-26-generic + linux-image-extra-4.13.0-26-generic: fails
to boot
  - linux-image-4.13.0-21-generic: boots up, but since no r8169, no networking
  - linux-image-4.13.0-21-generic + linux-image-extra-4.13.0-21-generic: fails
to boot
  - linux-image-4.10.0-42-generic + linux-image-extra-4.10.0-42-generic: boots
up fine

After that I've tried some mainline kernels from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline to check if the problem
is the upstream or ubuntu patches:

  - linux-image-4.14.13-041413-generic_4.14.13-041413.201801101001_amd64.deb:
boots up fine
  - linux-image-4.13.13-041313-generic_4.13.13-041313.201711150531_amd64.deb:
fails to boot
  - linux-image-4.13.16-041316-generic_4.13.16-041316.201711240901_amd64.deb:
boots up fine
  - linux-image-4.13.14-041314-generic_4.13.14-041314.201711180632_amd64.deb:
fails to boot
  - linux-image-4.13.15-041315-generic_4.13.15-041315.201711211030_amd64.deb:
boots up fine

So, it seems, the problem is fixed either in patches between 4.13.14
and 4.13.15 upstream, or ubuntu configs/patches applied to mainline
  kernels.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1755034] [NEW] broadcom b43 driver not working

2018-03-11 Thread hcmeyer
Public bug reported:

Problem is actually with cfg80211 and CRDA:

Dmesg output:

[ 108.370194] cfg80211: Loading compiled-in X.509 certificates for regulatory
database
[ 108.381953] cfg80211: Loaded X.509 cert 'sforshee: 00b28ddf47aef9cea7'
[ 108.416481] platform regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db
failed with error -2
[ 108.416488] cfg80211: failed to load regulatory.db
[ 108.643561] Broadcom 43xx driver loaded [ Features: NL ]

I have spent a day putzing about with this, it was working on Xeniel,
now Bionic has broken it.

I am trying to save an old lenovo laptop from the scrap heap. Maybe it
belongs there.

I only have ethernet in the basement. It is cold down here.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1751021] Re: retpoline abi files are empty on i386

2018-03-11 Thread daniel CURTIS
Hello.

I've noticed this issue with blank '/boot/retpoline-*' files in 16.04
LTS Release (i386/x86_32) after Linux kernel update to the v4.4.0-115
version. (Generally, I've started to seeing these files when
"Spectre_V12" patches were available for i386 architecture. I wanted to
ask a question or report a bug about it etc.) So, these files are empty
and it looks this way on 16.04 LTS Release:

[~]$ ls -al /boot/retpoline-4.4.0-11*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 lut 11 19:00 /boot/retpoline-4.4.0-115-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 lut 13 00:14 /boot/retpoline-4.4.0-116-generic

[~]$ uname -m
i686

Thanks, best regards.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1696325] Re: USB, display and ethernet ports in HP Thunderbolt dock don't work

2018-03-11 Thread archenroot
Hi guys, I have indirect comment, but related to thuderbold support. I
have Dell xps 13 and by running on 4.12.12 kernel I get same messages on
Dell DA200 UCB-C adapter (provides HDMI and Ethernet and VGA and USB).
In didn't get it working yet, but just testing it with latest available
kernel on Gentoo system =4.15.7 (release 1).

I found in my case information that it might help if I upgrade the
thunderbolt firmware in the laptop, which dell made open source:
https://github.com/dell/thunderbolt-nvm-linux

Not sure if HP provides you with Thunderbolt firmware update for Linux
(although in case of Dell the files are extractable from Windows CAB
files, but I am studying it at the moment)
