[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1810546] Re: AMDGPU VMC page fault with Athlon 200GE APU

2019-01-05 Thread Steven Ellis
Switched back to the Stock 18.04 LTS kernel and installed
 - amdgpu-pro-18.50-708488-ubuntu-18.04
 - https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-lin-18-50-unified

With straight amdgpu support VDPAU doesn't work correctly and I needed
to install the full amdgpu-pro version. So far system is stable and I
haven't had any new amdgpu lockups.

I'd prefer to use the pure amdgpu opensource drive, but even the
upstream 4.20 kernel has issues.

Title:
  QCA6174 doesn't utilise btcoex - Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio
Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm running Linux 4.20.0-042000-generic #201812232030 x64 on a Dell XPS 9570
with QCA6174 chipset, and have had the problem with Bluetooth audio choppiness
ever since I have owned this laptop. This problem has persisted for me with
previous kernels. If I disable wifi and use media on machine
  locally, the problem doesn't occur.

Note: I've reverted back v4.18.0-13-generic and reproduced the problem for
  the apport-collect report.

It started with Ubuntu 18.04 and continues with 18.10. It's
particularly noticeable when the when saturating the WLAN connection
with throughput, i.e. copying a large file sequentially across from a
samba share, but also streaming video online results in the audio
progressively delaying over-time. Re-establishing the Bluetooth audio
sync restores the sync, but slowly creeps out again.

I've upgraded my linux-firmware package to disco 176 to match v4.20
  kernel drivers ref: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  firmware/1.176

The ath10k_core driver that supports this device has a reference for
  btcoex: ref

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/core.c?h=v4.20#n2598

It's possible that the Bluetooth component firmware is not supporting
or communicating btcoex compatibility, but this is starting to reach
the edge of my ability to diagnose the problem.

This btcoex support in ath9k has resolved/improved the Bluetooth
  bandwidth problem as shown in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1746164

As a troubleshooting step, I've also tried the very latest firmware-6 file
from, but I'm continuing to experience the problem ref:

Title:
  QCA6174 doesn't utilise btcoex - Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio
Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm running Linux 4.20.0-042000-generic #201812232030 x64 on a Dell XPS 9570
with QCA6174 chipset, and have had the problem with Bluetooth audio choppiness
ever since I have owned this laptop. This problem has persisted for me with
previous kernels. If I disable wifi and use media on machine
  locally, the problem doesn't occur.

Note: I've reverted back v4.18.0-13-generic and reproduced the problem for
  the apport-collect report.

It started with Ubuntu 18.04 and continues with 18.10. It's
particularly noticeable when the when saturating the WLAN connection
with throughput, i.e. copying a large file sequentially across from a
samba share, but also streaming video online results in the audio
progressively delaying over-time. Re-establishing the Bluetooth audio
sync restores the sync, but slowly creeps out again.

I've upgraded my linux-firmware package to disco 176 to match v4.20
  kernel drivers ref: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  firmware/1.176

The ath10k_core driver that supports this device has a reference for
  btcoex: ref

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/core.c?h=v4.20#n2598

It's possible that the Bluetooth component firmware is not supporting
or communicating btcoex compatibility, but this is starting to reach
the edge of my ability to diagnose the problem.

This btcoex support in ath9k has resolved/improved the Bluetooth
  bandwidth problem as shown in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1746164

As a troubleshooting step, I've also tried the very latest firmware-6 file
from, but I'm continuing to experience the problem ref:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/tree/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1

Title:
  QCA6174 doesn't utilise btcoex - Ubuntu 18 Bluetooth Audio
Skip/Stutter/Delay WiFi bandwidth conflict Dell XPS 9570

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I'm running Linux 4.20.0-042000-generic #201812232030 x64 on a Dell XPS 9570
with QCA6174 chipset, and have had the problem with Bluetooth audio choppiness
ever since I have owned this laptop. This problem has persisted for me with
previous kernels. If I disable wifi and use media on machine
  locally, the problem doesn't occur.

Note: I've reverted back v4.18.0-13-generic and reproduced the problem for
  the apport-collect report.

It started with Ubuntu 18.04 and continues with 18.10. It's
particularly noticeable when the when saturating the WLAN connection
with throughput, i.e. copying a large file sequentially across from a
samba share, but also streaming video online results in the audio
progressively delaying over-time. Re-establishing the Bluetooth audio
sync restores the sync, but slowly creeps out again.

I've upgraded my linux-firmware package to disco 176 to match v4.20
  kernel drivers ref: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  firmware/1.176

The ath10k_core driver that supports this device has a reference for
  btcoex: ref

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/core.c?h=v4.20#n2598

It's possible that the Bluetooth component firmware is not supporting
or communicating btcoex compatibility, but this is starting to reach
the edge of my ability to diagnose the problem.

This btcoex support in ath9k has resolved/improved the Bluetooth
  bandwidth problem as shown in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1746164

As a troubleshooting step, I've also tried the very latest firmware-6 file
from, but I'm continuing to experience the problem ref:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/tree/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1

Bug description:
I experienced this bug ever since I have upgraded my laptop from
16.04. But it got resolved in my last update after I reported the bug.
However, I forgot to go back to Launchpad to mark it as resolved and
now the problem comes again after I just updated the system.

So, as the title stated, I can't get in the system due to the infinite
black screen I am facing. I am only able to report this bug under the
  recovery mode.

Besides, there's something wrong with the lock screen too. I can't get
back to the system if I just put the system into "sleep mode". Black
  screen again!

What's worst, the brightness of my display can't be adjusted as well!
I feel like being blind at night! Please help!!! Thank you!

And I think there might be the compatibility problem between my laptop
and the new desktop -- Gnome, which is the default in 18.04.

What should do? I really love using Ubuntu, as I really learned a lot
in these days I used it as my study os for CS.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

It's particularly noticeable when the when saturating the WLAN
connection with throughput, i.e. copying a large file sequentially
across from a samba share, but also streaming video online results in
the audio progressively delaying over-time. Re-establishing the
Bluetooth audio sync restores the sync, but slowly creeps out again.

I've upgraded my linux-firmware package to disco 176 to match v4.20
  kernel drivers ref: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  firmware/1.176

The ath10k_core driver that supports this device has a reference for
  btcoex: ref

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/core.c?h=v4.20#n2598

It's possible that the Bluetooth component firmware is not supporting
or communicating btcoex compatibility, but this is starting to reach
the edge of my ability to diagnose the problem.

This btcoex support in ath9k has resolved/improved the Bluetooth
  bandwidth problem as shown in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1746164

As a troubleshooting step, I've also tried the very latest firmware-6
file from, but I'm continuing to experience the problem ref:
  https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-
  firmware/tree/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1776616] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 getting stuck at "Starting Reboot" and "Starting Power-Off"

2019-01-05 Thread expos
I installed many upstream kernels via UKUU. I did several verifications
with shutdown and reboot, last version where both works is 4.6.2, first
version where neither shutdown nor reboot works is 4.6.3 . Both kernels
4.5.7 and 4.6 work fine for me.

Title:
Ubuntu 18.04 getting stuck at "Starting Reboot" and "Starting Power-
  Off"

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hardware: HPE ProLiant DL360 gen9
  Ubuntu Version: 18.04

Problem: When rebooting the server, everything goes well (shutting
down services, unmounting etc) until the last step where it reads
"Starting Reboot". At this point the system is getting stuck and
nothing else can can be done than holding the power button in for a
long enough time to turn it off. At the same time as the system get
stuck, a red error light is lightening up on the server. This light is
green until it reaches this "Starting Reboot" stage. The same happens
if the server is shutdown, with the difference that the last message
is "Starting Power-Off" instead of "Starting Reboot".

The server is installed with a new clean 18.04 installation. This
server was rebooting/shutting down without a problem with all releases
  between 16.04 and 17.10.

This problem is serious as it prevents remote reboot.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1810548] Re: Samsung U.2 NVMe SM961/PM961 randomly will go missing under kernel 4.15

Title:
Samsung U.2 NVMe SM961/PM961 randomly will go missing under kernel
  4.15

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Bug Description:
This problem seems related to the following reported bugs:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1737934
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1678184
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed/+bug/1682704
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1705748

  System Configuration:
The server is populated with hot swappable 1.9TB 7mm U.2 NVMe and 1.9TB 2.5”
SSD SATA – either drives can serve as system boot drive. In addition, there’re
twelve (12) 7TB 3.5” HDD SAS drives for data raid storage. Currently, the SSD
SATA drive is used as file system boot device. Below is the lsb_release and cat
/proc/cmdline output.

  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
  Release: 18.04
  Codename: bionic

  BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-43-generic
  root=UUID=20881db9-36c3-4d83-9688-da36477e62e3 ro

  Problem:
For both Xenial and Bionic running with kernel 4.15, the NVMe drive is having
severe problems – the drive is intermittently disappearing with lsblk and nvme
list commands, while spewing a lot of Buffer I/O errors on screen. The lspci
output shows that the controller is disconnecting intermittently on the PCIe
bus.

  Symptom:
At initial system’s boot up from fresh install, the NVMe drive will be
recognized by lsblk, lspci and nvme list commands. Then the drive will go
missing for no obvious reason then will appear again randomly, and this restart
events will cycle continuously even the drive is at idle state. The output of
dmesg, syslog and journal are all the same – it displays the unexpected
shutdown of the drive. See below output. (for detailed text, see the attached
dmesg, syslog and journalctl files)
  -
  [ 485.296413] nvme nvme1: pci function :18:00.0
  [  485.296516] nvme :18:00.0: enabling device (0100 -> 0102)
[ 485.406992] nvme nvme1: Shutdown timeout set to 8 seconds
[ 485.409433] nvme nvme1: failed to mark controller state 1
[ 485.409435] nvme nvme1: Removing after probe failure status: 0
  -
This symptom is present on both distro 16.04LTS and 18.04LTS running at
kernel 4.15. The same symptom was evident at upstream kernels - 4.18.3 and
4.18.19 as well.

  Work-around:
With kernel 4.19, this symptom does not manifest. It has fixed the random
disconnection of NVMe controller over the PCIe bus. In addition, all the
commands - i.e. lspci, lsblk, and nvme list will consistently display the drive
without the occurrence of a missing NVMe drive during scan.

  How to reproduce:
  1.Use Samsung U.2 NVME SM961/PM961 drive
2.Install either Ubuntu 16.04.5 or 18.04.1 running at kernel 4.15
3.Boot and wait until the file system recognized all the installed drives in
the system.
4.Execute lsblk, lspci and nvme list command repeatedly. You will see, the
NVMe drive will randomly go missing and will spew-out a lot of buffer IO
errors. With 16.04.5LTS, the symptom is more severe. After fresh install, the
drive will appear once, but once it goes missing, it will never come back again.

Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1810345] Re: kernel: general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP PTI

2019-01-05 Thread Achim Behrens
i tried with 4.20.0-042000-generic and got a crash again (when running
in screensaver mode/idle). even sysreq reisub didnt work, had to
hardreset. i dont know how to trigger this crash on purpose. yesterday
it worked with the 4.20 kernel without crash.

i put the journalctl -b -1 as attachment, snipped a lot of desktop stuff
out of it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1807259] Re: sky2 ethernet card doesn't work after returning from suspend

2019-01-05 Thread Richard
Hi,

I attached the dmesg output after resuming from suspend. The network
card is not working at that point in time. I assume it doesn't make
sense to run apport at that time as there is no network connection. If
you require apport being run nevertheless please tell me at which state
you require running it. I can re-activate the network card by running:

sudo service network-manager restart
sudo modprobe -r sky2
sudo modprobe sky2

after resume. However this is no option for other users on the system.

Kind Regards
Richard

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1804505] Re: Kubuntu 18.04.01 - Ryzen 2400G / AMDGPU - Random system freezes

2019-01-05 Thread Cannot Remember
I can add to this that I had lots of video lockups with 4.19.1, a day
without was a wonder! Then I upgraded to 4.19.5 which did not help
either. During one lockup I noticed that sound from a video was
continuing to play for a while, so I tried to stick a flash drive into a
USB port, and the drive was actually registered both being plugged in
and removed again (syslog entries). Since the kernel seemed to continue
to operate even when video was frozen, I thought this may be a MESA
issue so I upgraded MESA using the Ubuntu-X Team PPA. That did not help
either, so I upgraded to kernel 4.19.9 and this was a HUGE improvement
in stability, no lockups for almost 2 weeks! But eventually it locked
up, still with the same error being logged. Now I am on kernel 4.20, and
there has been no problems for almost a week, but only time will tell...
:)

  Kubuntu 18.04.01 - Ryzen 2400G / AMDGPU - Random system freezes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am experiencing some stray lockups which are most likely related to
AMDGPU. There is no apparent logic in the pattern with wich the system
hangs and I cannot provide any steps to reproduce the problem. One
time it happened as I clicked a link in Firefox, new tab opened and
the system froze. Another time, Firefox was not open and I was about
to edit a text file by clicking "F4 Edit" in Krusader and the system
froze. When the system freezes, it is completely unresponsive and
there are no other options than to reset and reboot. The system
generates no error reports as far as I can figure out and the only
apparent info are some entries in the syslog. I have appended relevant
info below, if further info may be needed please ask :)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1752772] Re: r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2019-01-05 Thread Lope
Regarding my previous comment
"4.15.0-24-generic resolved the problem for me."
That is true for my Asus N53SV laptop.

However I have a desktop motherboard with onboard
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 11)

Where I have discovered this issue is occurring on Kernel
Linux 4.15.0-43-generic #46-Ubuntu

I have made a temporary workaround for my desktop like so:

#
#/etc/systemd/system/fix-r8169.service

[Unit]
Description=Fix RTL-8169 Driver on resume from suspend
After=suspend.target

[Service]
User=root
Type=oneshot
ExecStartPre=[[ $(uname --kernel-release) == "4.15.0-43-generic" ]] &&
/sbin/modprobe -r r8169
ExecStart=[[ $(uname --kernel-release) == "4.15.0-43-generic" ]] &&
/sbin/modprobe r8169
TimeoutSec=0
StandardOutput=syslog

[Install]
WantedBy=suspend.target

#systemctl enable fix-r8169.service
#

This script gives new kernels the opportunity to get it right.
If I update and the new kernel is not working, I'll update the kernel version
in the systemd service.

Title:
r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

Status in Linux:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Ethernet r8169 stops working after system resumed from suspend.

  [Test]
User confirmed these patches fix the issue. r8169 continues to work
  after resume from suspend.

  [Regression Potential]
Medium. The fix is limited to one device, all patches are in mainline.
The WOL default change might cause regression for users that depend on
BIOS settings. We can advice them to use userspace tool (systemd,
  ethtool, etc.) instead.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have noticed that the network stopped working on my desktop after I've
suspended the system and woke it up. On dmesg there are messages like:

  [ 150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
  [ 150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
  [ 150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
  [ 150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
happening. This is happening on Bionic.

There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
  1) Reboot the system;
  2) Remove the r8169 module and reinsert it with modprobe.

The motherboard is a AsRock H55M-LE and the Ethernet controller is:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)

CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in thermald package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04, I've noticed that CPU and
GPU fans suddenly go full throttle. It doesn't seem to depend on
temperature, could happen when 32 °C reported, sometimes the laptop
can work for day or two without this issue, but eventually it happens.
The only way to stop fans is to power off the laptop, power on (fans
go 100% at this point again), power off during BIOS splash screen and
power on again. Seems to happen more often after waking up from a
  sleep.

  Things tried:

Upgrading BIOS to latest available on ASUS site to the date of
  writing. No change.

  asus-fan kernel module (https://github.com/daringer/asus-fan). Detects
both fans and shows correct speed in /sys/class/hwmon/*/fan{1,2}*, but
does not seem to control it and does not prevent going full throttle.

4.17.0 kernel from Ubuntu mainline builds. Doesn't seem to affect the
  issue.

  Userspace fan control software (https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc).
Can control speed of both fans to the point where they go full
throttle, after that has no effect on them.
