[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1791427] Re: Touchpad and/or trackpoint stop working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th

2019-02-02 Thread Michael Andersson
Hello,

After some very thorough testning I can say that it seems to be working!

Though I noticed that sometimes, not often, tap to click, two finger
scroll and two finger right click stops working for a brief moment, up
to 20 seconds maybe. Can't say for sure it is related to the fix but I
guess it's likley. Attaching journalctl log.

Title:
Touchpad and/or trackpoint stop working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1
  Carbon 6th

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 18.04.1

Terminology in case we use different terms:
touchpad - just the rectangular touch-sensitive surface below the keyboard
(xinput lists it as Synaptics TM3288-011)
trackpoint - the red thingy built into the keyboard + 3 physical buttons
below the keyboard (trackpoint and buttons are integrated together; listed in
xinput as TPPS/2 Elan TrackPoint)

On September 7th, 2018, Lenovo has issued a BIOS update (v1.30), which
enables proper S3 deep sleep state - users no longer have to patch
DSDT tables to get it. It can be enabled in the BIOS settings. In X1
carbon 6th generation models that have NFC, when laptop wakes from
suspend by opening the lid, in most cases both touchpad and trackpoint
stop working completely. They are also no longer listed when running
xinput command. Sometimes just one of them stops working, usually the
trackpoint. In some rare cases it is possible to bring them back by
  using these commands:

  echo -n none > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/drvctl
  echo -n reconnect > /sys/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/drvctl
  rmmod psmouse
  modprobe psmouse

These worked properly when waking up from S2Idle sleep state (had
these in a script that runs after waking the machine from suspend),
but with S3 deep sleep these rarely work and the only way to bring
back touchpad and/or trackpoint is turning off the machine and turning
it on (restart does not help).

I could not find any pattern that would show when the input devices
stop working or start working again using the commands mentioned
above. It's completely random from my perspective.

This is happening on the standard issue 4.15.0-33-generic kernel that
shipped with my Ubuntu 18.04 (with updates), as well as with newer
mainline kernels, such as the newest point versions of 4.17, 4.18 and
  4.19 RC2.

This happens regardless of whether "blacklist i2c_i801" is commented
out in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf or not. It happens regardless of
whether "psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1" is passed as grub parameter.
Presence of TLP does not make it better, nor worse.

It appears that non-NFC models are not affected. I know at least one
Arch Linux user who has the exact same model, but without this issue.
I'm using synaptics driver (no libinput installed), he uses libinput
and doesn't have synaptics, if that information is of any use.
Libinput does not seem to help.

This forum thread also has more details from users who updated their
BIOS to get S3 suspend: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-
  Discussion/X1-Carbon-Gen-6-cannot-enter-deep-sleep-S3-state-aka-
  Suspend-to/td-p/3998182/page/27

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1814364] Re: software updater ask grub setting repeated

2019-02-02 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

  linux-image-4.15.0-44-generic tty login not work

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I just updated my ubuntu 18.04 and received the linux-
  image-4.15.0-44-generic.

After update and reboot the machine, my computer starts normally.

  Seems boot normally

but when gets to the login screen (I'm not use any kind of graphical
login manager, boot pure on console/text)

I just need to press enter (doesn't matter if type my login or not),
then starts a loop, like if my 'enter' key has some kind of mechanical
  defect.

Keeps pressing 'enter' until I do a CTRL-C.

If I press enter key again, starts all over again. Periodically
pressing 'enter' key in lapse of seconds.

To prevent, I just had to boot using linux-image-4.15.0-43-generic and
  could login normally.

What can I provide to you look this? I think it's my first time here
  or one of firsts

  Thanks in advanced.

Title:
Intel I219-V Ethernet Interface on Ubuntu Linux Using e1000e Driver
  keeps Dropping Internet Connection

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've turned up many, many new server and workstation systems over the
years on both Linux and Windows. Never seen anything like this
behaviour I'm witnessing on Ubuntu Server 18.04 before where I simply
lose Internet connectivity while using a browser. Ethernet interfaces
usually either work or they don't work.

I've configured the Intel I219-V Ethernet interface (wired Ethernet
connection, there is no wifi on this system) using the e1000e driver
for Ubuntu. The Ethernet connection is configured to use
NetworkManager via Netplan on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Server version. ASRock
  Z370m Pro4 motherboard.

The Ethernet interface will drop the Internet connectivity when I'm
using either the Firefox or Chrome browser. It usually happens when
I'm using the search features of the browser. I can't figure out what
would cause this type of behaviour. When the Internet connection
drops, the only way to get back Internet connectivity is to disconnect
the wired connection using the Ubuntu features and then re-connect
(this restarts the NetworkManager service I notice).

In the NetworkManager logs I do notice an "auth" error about a file or
directory not found. I've never seen that before.

Note: The auth error does not coincide with the loss of Internet
connectivity, but it does proceed it. Often there can be many hours
between the auth error and the actual loss of Internet connectivity.

After I reconnect the connection (via re-starting the NetworkManager
service) all will be fine for up to a day or so, but then I stress
test it with a bunch of searches using the browser and usually I can
get the Internet connectivity to drop again. Repeat the disconnect
and reconnect process again (aka re-start NetworkManager) and the
Internet connectivity will be fine again. The longest I've seen it go
without an "Internet connectivity drop" issue is about 36 hours.

I notice that the e1000e driver does not list the I219-V as a
supported Ethernet interface in the Intel documentation for the Linux
version of the driver. I'm not sure why that is. The I219-V is
supposed to used another driver, but it's not clear there's a Linux
version for of the driver for the I219-V.

I'm really disappointed that I've run into this issue with Ubuntu
Server LTS 18.04 on this motherboard. I had CentOS Server 7.4 (my
standard server OS, a great Linux distro) on this same motherboard for
a week with no issues, so I know the motherboard and the I219-V
Ethernet interface are 100% good hardware wise and can work properly.
CentOS 7.4 uses NetworkManager as the default for managing the
  Ethernet interface.

The only reason I'm using Ubuntu Server 18.04 on this motherboard is
because of a specific package that Ubuntu has a newer packaged version
than CentOS. CentOS is extremely stable when it comes to basic server
  functionality.

Hopefully, this bug with the I219-V Ethernet interface using the
e1000e drive for Linux can be verified and a fix rolled out.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1814400] [NEW] Thinkpad X250 blanks and locks up when removed from the docking station

2019-02-02 Thread Jason Moore
Public bug reported:

My X250 has worked with the docking station for just over three years
but the latest kernel update (4.15.0-45-generic) seems to have broken
the ability to undock.

To reproduce:

1. Turn the laptop on and log in.
2. Dock the laptop.
3. Undock the laptop.

This leaves the computer in an unresponsive state (screen is black,
keyboard input of any kind doesn't do anything) and I have to force a
shutdown.

If the laptop screen dims while docked, the computer also has be force
restarted. If you dock the laptop before booting the computer, it
doesn't boot and is in the same locked state.

Depending on the kernel version, we've got NMI watchdog errors related to CPU
stuck (mentioning the CPU core id, which is random).
Crash is happening randomly, but in general after some hours (3-4h).

Now, we've installed kernel 4.11.0-041100-generic #201705041534 this morning
and waiting for crash...
For now, the machine is not "used", at least, it's not CPU stressed...

  Thanks

I have only used the workaround since kernel 4.20.4, so I just booted
the kernel now without and with the parameter. As can be seen in line
704 in the log without "idle=halt", we see the error "[Firmware Bug]:
ACPI MWAIT C-state 0x0 not supported by HW (0x0)". This error does not
occur when "idle=halt" is set.

Yeah, this is starting to look more and more like a BIOS issue on
certain mobos.

Since your machine is issuing that ACPI MWAIT error, can you apply the
debugging patch from comment #512, build a kernel, boot into it
without "idle=halt" and upload dmesg again?

Thx.

  Thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1721987] Re: No sound from right audio channel

2019-02-02 Thread Max Fuxjäger
Hey, I tried the script solution together with the systemd service file.
It works very nicely!

I noticed that you also have to run the script when the device wakes from
standby (e.g. closing-reopening the lid).
For that to work, you have to add a few more targets to WantedBy (I just
searched around, I did not test which ones you really need for that to work):

suspend.target hibernate.target hybrid-sleep.target

Title:
No sound from right audio channel

Status in Linux:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
No audio comes out of the right speaker on the laptop. When playing a
test video such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTvJoYnpeRQ the
right-channel audio is never heard (i.e., it does not get converted
into mono and played through the left speaker).

When plugging in headphones, audio is heard from both channels.

In Windows, both speakers work, so it is not a physical problem with
  the speakers.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1814393] [NEW] "make: write error: stdout" on parallel builds

2019-02-02 Thread eocanha
Public bug reported:

- Release of Ubuntu: 18.04.1 LTS (Kubuntu).
- Package version: linux-image-4.15.0-44-generic, linux-image-4.15.0-45-generic.
- Expected outcome: Large parallel make build completing properly.
- What happened instead: Build stops with "make: write error: stdout".

Full explanation:

Since the update to kernel 4.15.0-44 (linux-image-4.15.0-44-generic) in
Kubuntu Bionic I'm experiencing issues in my ThinkPad P52 laptop during
large parallel builds of source code (eg: a buildroot full rebuild for a
work project). Note that this reports isn't about kernel builds, but
about large project builds in general.

I don't think it's relevant, but I'm running those builds in an schroot
with the same Ubuntu Bionic distro I'm also using as main host distro.

The specific error I get is this (in Spanish):

  make[4]: error al escribir: stdout

I call Buildroot's make like this from KDE Konsole with "infinite
history buffer" enabled (uses a tmp file to store the logs):

  V=1 make ...some stuff... 2>&1

However, the error is reproducible in Konsole even if I call make
without options and also if I use "limited (in-memory) history buffer"
as well as "no history buffer". Buildroot autoselects a parallelization
level (-j) automatically. In my case, I'm using a Xeon E-2176 CPU with
12 threads.

Searching on the Internet I found a thread[1] where people from the GNU
Make project say that the error may be coming from the C runtime library
(and I suspect originating from the kernel).

I can NOT reproduce the issue on linux-image-4.15.0-43-generic (selected
from grub at boot), but I experience it with linux-
image-4.15.0-44-generic and linux-image-4.15.0-45-generic. That's why
I'm reporting this bug against the linux package.

Interestingly enough, I can NOT reproduce the issue on linux-
image-4.15.0-45-generic (haven't tried previous versions) when building
from xterm instead of Konsole. Unfortunately, this laptop has a 4K
screen and xterm isn't an option for me.

If I build redirecting stdout and stderr to different files to avoid
terminal output and then watching the stdout file with tail -f, the tail
command eventually finishes although the build continues and I can keep
watching it by running tail again. An infinite build loop never finishes
with this redirection (error not reproducible). Same results with the
2>&1 redirection to a single file.

All this looks a bit like a poltergeist, but the only thing I'm sure
about is that it all started with the upgrade from 4.15.0-43 to -44 and
it continues on -45.

Thank you.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1717796] Re: Bluetoothd fills 100% CPU when bluetooth keyboard goes in idle

2019-02-02 Thread johndow2001
Dear Ubuntu dev Team

DON'T MAKE "UPGRADES" WHICH CHANGE PERMISSIONS!!!

It is a permission problem with my home folder and pulseaudio.

I've had 2 issues:
 - bluetoothd operating at 100% of one CPU core
 - no way to connect ANY bt device

If happened after one of your "upgrades", so please test it MORE
THOROUGHLY next time. Yes, I'm certain it happened after an upgrade
cause I made backup 2 days prior to this extremely frustrating issue and
no software other than "ubuntu upgrade" was installed in the meantime.

After having researched internet twice and having already made my mind
to switch to another linux distro if the solution does't come up till
the end of the day - I came across this:

Run the following command to fix the $HOME directory permissions for the
current $USER:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER $HOME/
I used
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/problem-with-pulse-audio-834041/
 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6208727 as sources.

The solution for me was to fix the permissions using the following
command: sudo chown -R lionel:lionel /home/lionel and then using
pavucontrol to unmute the output.

The gnome indicator is still greyed but music is back, and that's a good
thing.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1791312] Re: ubuntu 18.04 flickering screen with Radeon X1600

2019-02-02 Thread Werner Lueckel
.. as recommended I tried 3.14.79-031479-generic;
giving me radeon.ko version 2.37.0 and the screen is o.k. No flickering.
btw. I had the same result e.g. with "puppy_tahr 6.0.5 boot CD" which has the
same radeon-version (2.37.0).
My guess: the flickering-problem starts with radeon 2.39.0 upward. See my table
above (a little messed-up due to lacking blanks).

  Description:
  I start ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Kernel 4.15.0.33) in textmode;
-> as soon as the kernel-module radeon.ko is loaded the screen starts
flickering
when starting the grafic-mode the flickering continues; so the screen is
unusable.

when setting the option "radeon.modeset=0" (thus: not use radeon drivers) the
screen does not flicker
but the resolution is limited to 1400x1050 (instead of natural 1680x1050)
so I can not use this as work-around

when using the old ubuntu 14.04.05 LTS (Kernel 3.13.0-157)
the screen is o.k. NO flickering in textmode, nice grafic, NO flickering
  xrandr tells: 1680x1050 60.1

so I must stay on old ubuntu 14.04.05 ???

  === SRU Justification ===
  [Impact]
Some Asus laptops report "discharging" when the battery is full and AC
  is plugged

  [Test]
Charge battery to full, the issue appears.
Users report with the patch the behaviour is correct.

  [Fix]
The discharge rate is 0 on those machines. Use that to detect the wrong

  [Regression Potential]
Low. The quirk uses strict DMI to match affected systems.

The AC adapter status is incorrectly reported when the battery is fully
charged. It always shows as if the adapter is not plugged in. If the battery is
drained for a while, the adapter status is shown correctly (both connects and
disconnects are shown).

2019-02-02 Thread M. Gonzalez
Also that on 5GHz, channels 40 and 48 do work, but any higher than that
and the wifi card isn't able to see the WiFi anymore

tested it myself, and including channel 52 and 56 aren't able to show

2019-02-02 Thread Yuri Gor
Alexandre Lima's suggestion works, but it needs to be adjusted in case
of not an English locale.

Try

# for FILE in $(dpkg-divert --list | grep nvidia-340 | awk '{print
$3}'); do echo $FILE; done

first and choose the correct number for substring `{print $3}`

For example for Russian locale it will be $2:

# for FILE in $(dpkg-divert --list | grep nvidia-340 | awk '{print
$2}'); do dpkg-divert --remove $FILE; done

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 430245] Re: suspend/resume failure (ATI Mobility Radeon X700, kernel 2.6.31-10 Karmic Coala)

2019-02-02 Thread Martin Dauskardt
same problem with Ubuntu 12.04, 16.04, 18.04, 18.10. And even a Bhodi
with Kernel 3.2 shows the same error an resume. Last Distribution which
works with suspend/resume is Ubuntu 9.04.

The workaround with /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force seems to be outdated, as
this file is not present in recent Ubuntus.

Is there anything else I could do?

Title:
suspend/resume failure (ATI Mobility Radeon X700, kernel 2.6.31-10
  Karmic Coala)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Sep 20,2009

The below description was provided by a few days before. After that I
issued a dist-upgrade and a newer kernel ran on my system:
2.6.31-10.34 (instead of the earlier 2.6.31-10.32) and the problem
seemed to be solved. The computer resumes properly after a suspend. I
have no idea what the differences are but the systems behaves well
  now.

Sometimes, after resume, I have a flickering screen but changing to a
virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back (Alt+F7) solves this strange
behavior. Only once I experienced that the screen was white and slured
and the above key combinations had no any effect on it. I get
suspended the computer again and after the second resume it worked
  properly.

My computer suspends properly but after waking up a blank screen is obtained
seemingly without any working key combination: I can not change to a virtual
terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1), I can not restart the X server (Ctrl+Alt+Bckspace) and
also the built-in kernel emergency shutdown service is not available
(Ctrl+Alt+SysRq+r+e+i+s+u+b).

I think this problem relates to the driver of the graphics card.
According to my experience, suspend has never worked with the open
source fglrx driver for the ATI Radeon X700 card. And many people had
problem with the proprietary driver either. The latest proprietary
driver worked with X700 and suspend worked reliably was the driver
version 9.1. Since that I did not managed to obtain suspend properly.
Now I use the basic configuration of Karmic, proprietary driver is not

Bug description:
in disco proposed with new systemd and v4.19 kernel it appears that
dmsetup / cryptsetup storage either got better or worse.

Devices take very long to activate, and sometimes remain in use during
  test clean up.

This leads to udisks autopkgtest failing on ppc64le and systemd's
  "storage" autopkgtest is also failing.

I've tried to make ppc64le test more resilient, but it's still odd
that it became unstable in disco, and used to be rock solid on
  ppc64le.

Bug description:
I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on a HP EliteBook 840 G5 with docking station
and two screens attached via DisplayPort.
Reproducibly, when I close the lid of my notebook, the kernel
4.15.0-44.47-generic crashes with a Oops in i915 / intel_ddi_post_disable.
The previous kernel 4.15.0-43.46-generic works without problems.
