[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it
Testing upstream kernel, I can tell this situation is not a Ubuntu kernel specific issue. I can reproduce using upstream kernel. This is where I'm at the moment: BAD kernel : v4.16.18 GOOD kernel : v4.17-rc1 Leaving us to the following 'vmwgfx' commits to bisect: $ git log --oneline v4.16.18..v4.17-rc1 --grep="drm/vmwgfx:" 320b164abb32 Merge tag 'drm-for-v4.17' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/linux 2a2553cc45c8 Merge branch 'vmwgfx-next' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~thomash/linux into drm-next 43bfefedd028 drm/vmwgfx: Bump version patchlevel and date 37efe80ce85f drm/vmwgfx: use monotonic event timestamps 20fb5a635a0c drm/vmwgfx: Unpin the screen object backup buffer when not used 89dc15b76fd3 drm/vmwgfx: Stricter count of legacy surface device resources 6073a09210e0 drm/vmwgfx: Use kasprintf 4e3e733b45df drm/vmwgfx: Get rid of the device-private suspended member c3b9b1657344 drm/vmwgfx: Improve on hibernation bf833fd36f9b drm/vmwgfx: Avoid pinning fbdev framebuffers dc366364c4ef drm/vmwgfx: Fix multiple command buffer context use ef86cfee7d74 drm/vmwgfx: Use the cpu blit utility for framebuffer to screen target blits 79273e1b7eb0 drm/vmwgfx: Add a cpu blit utility that can be used for page-backed bos 25db875401c8 drm/vmwgfx: Cursor update fixes 904efd9e3f4c drm/vmwgfx: Send the correct nonblock option for atomic_commit ac3069e67f56 drm/vmwgfx: Move the stdu vblank event to atomic function aa64b3f18aeb drm/vmwgfx: Move screen object page flip to atomic function 3cbe87fcf026 drm/vmwgfx: Remove drm_crtc_arm_vblank_event from atomic flush 4e2f9fa7ffb5 drm/vmwgfx: Move surface copy cmd to atomic function 91e9f352cd1b drm/vmwgfx: Avoid iterating over display unit if crtc is available 25a28906ebee drm/vmwgfx: replace drm_*_unreference with drm_*_put 4f4becef17d6 drm/vmwgfx: Use drm_mode_get_hv_timing() to populate plane clip rectangle As I said, I'll start the bisection on Monday. I've been running this Ubuntu 18.04.2 VM without problem for many months without problem. Yesterday, I did 'sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade'. Upon rebooting, the system hangs immediately after displaying the splash screen. I never see a login screen. And I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to navigate to a console/tty login. I can SSH into the system however. I've found that I can work around the hang/freeze if I uncomment the following line in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf; #WaylandEnable=false After uncommenting the WaylandEnable=false line and rebooting, then I see the login prompt as expected and I can then log in and use the system normally again. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832435] Re: Lenovo miix 510 wifi adapter cannot be turned on
Addendum... Jeremy 1. I tried removing the blacklist fix and rebooting the computer to see if the partial install of the kernel fixed the problem. It did not (see attached screenshot) 2. I tried updating my software, however the system detected a partial install and now does not allow any updates until some type of "package fix" is done Miguel On Sunday, June 16, 2019, 9:57:21 AM GMT+8, Miguel Aboitiz wrote: Jeremy My secureboot is Disabled I tried installing the files as you instructed and encountered these errors. miguel@miguel-MIIX-510-12ISK:~/Downloads/linux$ sudo dpkg -i linux-*.deb [sudo] password for miguel: (Reading database ... 187922 files and directories currently installed.) [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832138] Re: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it
I have regular snapshots of my ESXi virtual machines and so using a snapshot before updating packages, I was able to install as many packages as I could before login broke in the way everyone is describing. The system boots up fine, presents a GUI login prompt, and I am able to login and use the system as expected (without having to uncomment #WaylandEnabled=false in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1832138 Title: Login screen never appears on vmwgfx but setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in mutter package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in mutter source package in Bionic: Incomplete Status in mutter source package in Eoan: Invalid Bug description: I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.2 desktop in a virtual machine under VMWare Fusion Pro V11.1.0 on MacOS Mojave 10.14.5, all on a 15inch 2018 Macbook Pro. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1543919] Re: Remove EISA support from main kernel image and make it M (modular)
Hi all, Noticed this in my Ubuntu 19.04 dmesg: [2.094782] platform eisa.0: Probing EISA bus 0 [2.094783] platform eisa.0: EISA: Cannot allocate resource for mainboard [2.094784] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 1 [2.094785] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 2 [2.094786] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 3 [2.094787] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 4 [2.094788] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 5 [2.094789] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 6 [2.094790] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 7 [2.094791] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 8 [2.094792] platform eisa.0: EISA: Detected 0 cards First time I've ever seen this on Ubuntu or any other distributions. My motherboard is an Asus Crosshair V Formula - not that new but not that old also, I think from 2011 or there abouts. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1543919 Title: Remove EISA support from main kernel image and make it M (modular) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: (This is a sort of RfC. ) I have a PC that still has the good old PCI ports, but I am 100% sure that the active use of EISA dates back yet more 10 years. In other words, boards that _only_ support EISA date back 25 years now, while those that provide *one* EISA slot date back roughly 15 years (one of the Elitegroup K7 series comes to mind, from about 2001/02). So the EISA support *should* be provided, as we should even support ancient hardware (Linux principle :)) However, why the EISA support is *compiled in* is beyond me. For instance, it creates lots of totally unnecessary noise in dmesg: [0.08] EISA bus registered [1.598316] platform eisa.0: Probing EISA bus 0 [1.598345] platform eisa.0: Cannot allocate resource for EISA slot 1 (repeated 10 times, i=i+1) [1.598368] platform eisa.0: EISA: Detected 0 cards For a 1997 mainboard, this would make perfect sense. But it is very probable that said mainboard would require linux-image-extra nonetheless to support some days-of-yore chipset. So why not leave it as a *module*, while removing its support from main kernel image once and for all? Your turn. Please attach dmesg. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1778087 Title: ELAN1200 touchpad jumps around and disconnects Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This is on an ASUS GL503VD laptop and would probably affect other ASUS laptops equipped with the ELAN1200 touchpad. I am on Kernel 4.17.2 because older kernels did not enable the touchpad at all(It was just unrecognized or i2c-hid stopped the computer from booting) The touchpad works but it has erratic behaviour and disconnects randomly. After it disconnects the only way to bring it back is to `modprobe -r hid-multitouch && modprobe hid-multitouch` Libinput and synaptics can handle the touchpad though I found synaptics to be more stable. dmesg gets spammed with this whenever I move the touchpad: [timestamp] i2c_hid i2c-ELAN1200:00: i2c_hid_get_input: incomplete report (16/65535) I tried to compile: https://github.com/mishurov/linux_elan1200_touchpad Because from what I understand the "jumpy/disconnect" problem is associated to the incomplete reports and Mishurov managed to mitigate those. Unfortunately some symbols were deprecated in kernel 4.17.2 and it did not compile for my system. While I can use my touchpad as is right now, and "restart" it with modprobe when needed, it would be nice to have it function bug-free. (Right after I typed this my touchpad disconnected and I needed to modprobe again, I am considering making a cronjob for that) Let me know if anything else is needed.
