[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1825753] Re: fan speed not reported with Ubuntu 18.10 and 19.04

2019-06-30 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Is there any process hogs the processor?

Anyway a quickest way to find out what happens is to do a kernel
bisection.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1805816] Re: APST quirk needed for PM951 Samsung 1TB NVMe Drive

Title:
APST quirk needed for PM951 Samsung 1TB NVMe Drive

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
This is a fresh posted connected to a very similar now-solved bug
("APST quirk needed for Samsung 512GB NVMe drive"):
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1678184

My NVMe is the less-common 1TB version. It exhibits similar (possibly
identical) behaviour but has not yet been quirked.

I've followed up as Comment #101 but maybe I need to open this as a
  new issue?
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1678184/comments/101

Specifically - using Kernel 4.19.0 on Mint 19.0 the default APST
settings caused read-only errors within minutes-1 hour, this is fatal.
Disabling APST solves the problem, I have this disabled in GRUB now.
Reducing the APST settings but not disabling them does not stop the
  problem.

An example of the read-only result (copied from #101) that occurs if APST is
left in its default state:
  Oct 31 11:33:04 ian-XPS-15-9550 kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-1): mounted filesystem
with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
  Oct 31 11:33:04 ian-XPS-15-9550 kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-1): re-mounted. Opts:
errors=remount-ro
  Oct 31 11:33:05 ian-XPS-15-9550 kernel: EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p1): mounted
filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
  Oct 31 15:09:44 ian-XPS-15-9550 kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-1): mounted filesystem
with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
  Oct 31 15:09:44 ian-XPS-15-9550 kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-1): re-mounted. Opts:
errors=remount-ro
  Oct 31 15:09:44 ian-XPS-15-9550 kernel: EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p1): mounted
filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

I had tried `nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=250` but the read-
only bug persists, it just takes longer to occur. Disabling APST with
  `nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0` has solved the issue.

I've been using my laptop successfully (no read-only errors) for over
a week having disabled APST including many suspend/awaken cycles.
Prior to this every boot would crash and burn with read-only errors
  within an hour or so.

This is the drive and kernel (copied from #101):
  $ sudo nvme list
Node SN Model Namespace Usage Format FW Rev

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Linux Mint 19 Tara

I am of course happy to upload more info - let me know what's needed?

Could this be added as a quirk to the kernel please?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1811819] Re: please include the kernel module VXLAN

2019-06-30 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hello,

Can you give this test kernel a try?
https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1811819-vxlan/X/

Config changed in this kernel:
+# CONFIG_GENEVE is not set
+# CONFIG_OPENVSWITCH_VXLAN is not set
-# CONFIG_VXLAN is not set
+CONFIG_VXLAN=m

$ sudo modprobe vxlan
$ lsmod | grep vxlan
vxlan 36864 0
ip6_udp_tunnel 12288 1 vxlan
udp_tunnel 12288 1 vxlan

Do you need this feature in other KVM kernels?
Thanks

  [Impact]

  Commit d653420532d580156c8486686899ea6a9eeb7bf0 in bionic enabled
kernel page table isolation for x86_32, but also introduced a kernel
bug (the BUG_ON() condition in vmalloc_sync_one()) that seems to
happen when vmalloc_sync_all() is called multiple times (e.g., in a
  busy loop).

The real problem seems to be a race condition with page-table entries'
initialization that can be fixed applying the upstream commit
  9bc4f28af75a91aea0ae383f50b0a430c4509303 ("x86/mm: Use WRITE_ONCE()
  when setting PTEs").

  [Test Case]

The bug can be easily triggered by rebooting the system a couple of
  times and loading this module:

  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/428142172/vmalloc-stress-test.c

  [Fix]

The following upstream fix seems to resolve the problem:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=9bc4f28af75a91aea0ae383f50b0a430c4509303

In addition to that the following other upstream fixes are required
(all clean cherry picks) to do a cleaner backport of
  9bc4f28af75a91aea0ae383f50b0a430c4509303:

  [Regression Potential]

All upstream fixes, tested on the affected platform, backport changes
  are minimal.

  [Original bug report]

  Hi,

  I'm reproducing a kernel bug in vmalloc_sync_all() with a 32-bit x86
  kernel.

  The problem appears in

Linux ubuntu 4.15.0-50-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 6 18:45:45 UTC
  2019 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Kernels 4.15.0-49 and prior work fine.
  The kernel 4.18.0-20-generic works fine.
This problem has not been experienced with upstream Linux kernels.

It appears that invoking vmalloc_sync_all() a few times end up
triggering this issue. This can be triggered by restarting the lttng-
sessiond service with lttng-modules-dkms installed (sometimes a few
restarts are needed to trigger the bug). This ends up unloading and
reloading those modules, which issues a few vmalloc_sync_all() as
  side-effect.

I'm not reporting this issue with the "ubuntu-bug linux" command
because it crashes the system on that kernel (system hangs, no console
  output).

My test system runs within a kvm virtual machine on a 64-bit host.

  Description:
  I start ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Kernel 4.15.0.33) in textmode;
-> as soon as the kernel-module radeon.ko is loaded the screen starts
flickering
when starting the grafic-mode the flickering continues; so the screen is
unusable.

when setting the option "radeon.modeset=0" (thus: not use radeon drivers) the
screen does not flicker
but the resolution is limited to 1400x1050 (instead of natural 1680x1050)
so I can not use this as work-around

when using the old ubuntu 14.04.05 LTS (Kernel 3.13.0-157)
the screen is o.k. NO flickering in textmode, nice grafic, NO flickering
  xrandr tells: 1680x1050 60.1

so I must stay on old ubuntu 14.04.05 ???

Bug description:
  [Impact]

With most recent version of mutter installed.
If running kernel is in the 4.15 serie (using the vmwgfx video kernel driver)
and if the login screen uses wayland, then the login prompt doesn't appears.
All we see is the purple background with ubuntu in white at the bottom, nothing
else.

The vmwgfx driver in kernels prior to 4.17 reported bogus timestamps using
the wrong clock. This would lead us to wait forever (or at least 49 years)
before rendering the next frame. There's no decisive way to know this kernel
bug is going to happen before it does so just detect timestamps which are
obviously going to cause freezes and ignore them.

  [Test case]

  1) Use Virtualbox or VMware ESxi (if you have the infra)
1.1) [virtualbox] Make sure in the VM setting that the display uses 'VMSVGA'
which will force the OS to pick 'vmwgfx' video kernel driver. You can confirm
with 'lspci -nnvv' command.
  2) Deploy a VM with Ubuntu 18.04.1 (which come w/ 4.15)
  4) apt-get dist-upgrade
  5) Reboot

  with 4.15 it will fails
with hwe kernel 4.18 it will work as expected. # workaround

  [Potential regression]

Low, it should fix vmwgfx and stop using the wrong clock.

A test kernel (pre-sru) has been made available to impact users for
them to test and conclude it works. It does work as expected, and no
regression has been found during the pre-sru testing phase.

  As per commit description:

  "
This should be transparent to to user space, as long as it doesn't
compare the time against the result of gettimeofday().

  [Original description]

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.2 desktop in a virtual machine under VMWare
  Fusion Pro V11.1.0 on MacOS Mojave 10.14.5, all on a 15inch 2018
  Macbook Pro.

I've been running this Ubuntu 18.04.2 VM without problem for many months
without problem.
Yesterday, I did 'sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade'. Upon rebooting, the
system hangs immediately after displaying the splash screen. I never see a
login screen. And I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to navigate to a console/tty login.

I can SSH into the system however.

I've found that I can work around the hang/freeze if I uncomment the
following line in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf;
  #WaylandEnable=false

After uncommenting the WaylandEnable=false line and rebooting, then I
see the login prompt as expected and I can then log in and use the
  system normally again.

After the 'apt upgrade' my system is running linux kernel 4.15.0-51,
  as shown in this 'uname -a' output;

  Linux ubuntuvm1 4.15.0-51-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 15 14:27:21

  [Impact]
  As reported in #1833067 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1830890/comments/7 some
glibc testcases are still regressing on i386 after applying both the following
commits:

  commit 379d98ddf41344273d9718556f761420f4dc80b3
  Author: Alistair Strachan
  Date: Fri Aug 3 10:39:31 2018 -0700

  commit cd01544a268ad8ee5b1dfe42c4393f1095f86879
  Author: Alistair Strachan
  Date: Fri Dec 14 14:36:37 2018 -0800

x86/vdso: Pass --eh-frame-hdr to the linker

  [Fix]
Revert both these patches to restore the original behaviour.

  [Test]
  ADT tests for glibc.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. This restores the status quo before the original change to
vdso/x86/Makefile to restore the original linker behaviour.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834782] Re: ASUS Zenbook UX433FN: sound stops working after a couple of seconds

2019-06-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If the problem started only a month ago then it wouldn't be pulseaudio
because that hardly ever changes. Most likely it is the kernel, which
gets updated more frequently.

Can you please try some older (or newer) kernel versions from here:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D

and tell us if any are able to avoid the bug?

Issue: whichever sound-related action (sound +/- media keys, spotify song,
youtube vid in browser,...) I do, the sound works OK for about 2-3 seconds, and
then stops and becomes silent.
The interesting thing is that when I stop playing the audio (ie close the
browser tab with a song), after a while when I try aain the sound works again.
Yet still for just the few secs.

  Environment:
  up-to-date Ubuntu 18.04, tried -hwe, hwe-edge kernels.

This is a regression, the sound used to work OK on this machine, and
nothing significant related to sound has changed since.

Thank you for looking into this bug!

   Status: New => In Progress

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Bluetooth on Intel Wireless-AC 9462/9560 requires new firmware blobs to
+ be enabled.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport newly released firmware blobs from linux-firmware. This will
+ also requires minor change to the WHENCE file to resolve cherry-pick
+ conflicts. B/C/D would requires this explicitly and Eoan should be
+ rebased onto linux-firmware master branch HEAD as usual.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Verified with hardware platforms with corresponding devices. Completely
+ power off and power on to trigger firmware reload, check from dmesg to
+ see if Bluetooth firmware has been correctly loaded.
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ Low. This adds new binary firmware blobs that are only loaded by
+ targeting hardware.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Bluetooth on Intel Wireless-AC 9462/9560 requires new firmware blobs to
  be enabled.

  [Fix]
Backport newly released firmware blobs from linux-firmware. This will
also requires minor change to the WHENCE file to resolve cherry-pick
conflicts. B/C/D would requires this explicitly and Eoan should be
rebased onto linux-firmware master branch HEAD as usual.

  [Test Case]
Verified with hardware platforms with corresponding devices. Completely
power off and power on to trigger firmware reload, check from dmesg to
see if Bluetooth firmware has been correctly loaded.

  [Regression Risk]
Low. This adds new binary firmware blobs that are only loaded by
  targeting hardware.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834666] Re: X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system

2019-06-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is a strange one.

It appears you have an Intel GPU (I assume because the CPU is model
i7-8700). And the Linux kernel can find it on the bus:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Device
[8086:3e92] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

but the kernel is also failing to load a driver for it, so there are no
/dev/dri* files for X to use.

** Summary changed:

- X didn't use hardware acceleration for your system
+ Intel GPU present but i915 not loaded. Stuck in low resolution.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
The process with this pc and my tv monitor (an old Sonoko) always takes alot
with Ubuntu. It takes even a little bit with Windows on the same device, but
with this distro (the only one I've ever tried, 19.04) it can even takes
minutes and even a counter intuitive setup.
I tried alot of days ago and I hope it can show up in the logs.
Furthermore the screen no 2, when finally start working, has a color shift. A
blue-ish shift. From the color the mouse cursor it seems white turns into a
turquoise.
I decided to report it now because I thought it was the old tv fault, but
today I decide to plug a new laptop on that and, even if Windows colors are a
little bit off, it's not at the same level as this issue

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1690085]

2019-06-30 Thread kernel
FWIW: I have an ASUS Prime 370-Pro, Ryzen 7 1800X, currently running
Kernel v5.0.17.

With "Typical Current Idle", and no kernel tweaks, that has run without
"freezing while idle" for about a year.

Yesterday I upgraded the BIOS, which for some reason reset the "Power
Supply Idle Control" to "Auto". That prompted me to run a small
experiment to see if kernel or other upgrades have improved things.
They have not: the machine "froze while idle" (fairly promptly). I have
now restored "Typical Current Idle", in the hope of another untroubled
year.

I note, however, that my cpu (0x00800f11) is running with firmware
0x0800137, not the more recent 0x0800138 -- if I am reading the table in
Comment 612, above, correctly.

Depending on the kernel version, we've got NMI watchdog errors related to CPU
stuck (mentioning the CPU core id, which is random).
Crash is happening randomly, but in general after some hours (3-4h).

Now, we've installed kernel 4.11.0-041100-generic #201705041534 this morning
and waiting for crash...
For now, the machine is not "used", at least, it's not CPU stressed...

  Thanks

There are 2 asix drivers in the kernel, they are drivers/net/usb/asix and
drivers/net/phy/asix. It leads to the compilation race condition that one
overwrites the other asix.mod in .tmp_version directory. This affects the USB
dongle if the "phy" one wins.

  [Test]
Verified on my own ASIX USB Ethernet dongle.

  [Regression Potential]
Low, it only rename the module name, no code change.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1746340] Re: Samsung SSD corruption (fsck needed)

2019-06-30 Thread WinEunuchs2Unix
I've been using NVMe M.2 Samsung Pro 960 for 18 months and never had a problem.
Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS, Kernel 4.14.114 LTS, Skylake 6700HQ, nVidia 970m
UEFI, GPT, AHCI (Intel Raid off), Secure Boot off

`/etc/fstab`:

UUID=b40b3925-70ef-447f-923e-1b05467c00e7 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
UUID=D656-F2A8  /boot/efi   vfatumask=0077  0   1
UUID=b4512bc6-0ec8-4b17-9edd-88db0f031332 noneswapsw
0 0

`/etc/default/grub`:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="noplymouth fastboot acpiphp.disable=1
pcie_aspm=force vt.handoff=7 i915.fastboot=1 nopti nospectre_v2 nospec"

I've never had a single fsck error ever. Granted the `grub` boot option
`fastboot` means `fsck` is not run on boot but I can check once FS is
mounted RW with:

$ sudo fsck -n /dev/nvme0n1p6
fsck from util-linux 2.27.1
e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
Warning! /dev/nvme0n1p6 is mounted.
Warning: skipping journal recovery because doing a read-only filesystem check.
New_Ubuntu_16.04: clean, 712096/2953920 files, 5733245/11829504 blocks

Assuming your `/etc/fstab` is the same, the two important `grub` boot
parameters are: `acpiphp.disable=1 pcie_aspm=force`. If memory serves me
correct though these were setup for suspend/resume reasons though.

I hope this helps those effected by bug a little but more importantly
that people realize the vast majority of NVMe installations work fine in
Linux.

I have a Razer Blade Stealth 2016. The first Ubuntu I installed was Ubuntu
17.04, which gave me this error after 2 weeks of usage. After that, I installed
16.04 and used it for MONTHS without any problems, until it produced the same
error this week. I think it has to do with the ubuntu updates, because I did
one recently and one today, just before this problem. Could be a coincidence
though.

I notice the error when I try to save something on disk and it says me

Rebooting the ubuntu will give me a black terminal where I can run
fsck /dev/nvm30n1p2 (something like that) and it fill fix a lot of
orphaned inodes. The majority of time it boots back to the Ubuntu
working good, but some times it boots to a broken ubuntu (no images,
lots of things broken). I have to reinstall ubuntu then.

Every time I reinstall my Ubuntu, I have to try lots of times until it
installs without an Input/Output error. When it installs, I can use it
for some hours without having the problem, but if I run the software
updates, it ALWAYS crashes and enters in read-only mode, specifically
in the part that is installing kernel updates.

I noticed that Ubuntu installs updates automatically when they're for
security reasons. Could this be the reason my Ubuntu

Interesting. It does Boot with acpi_osi=Linux, but dmesg/systemctl still
shows complaints about IVRS 4 and 5. Did we already establish some
commands to verify the full functionality of ACPI of this model?

  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U
  VGA: Radeon 535
  Notebook: Acer Aspire A315

This is a brand new notebook on the market with Ryzen 5/Radeon.
The default kernel of Ubuntu(18.04) hangs at loading with message:

tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 1996.250 MHz
  clocksource: tsc: mask: 0x max_cycles: (...), max_idle_ns:
(...)
  Soft lockup

Using pci=noacpi kernel parameter kernel loads without any problem but
my notebook produces more heat than on Win10. If I know right Acer
notebooks need ACPI to the correct power management.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1833281]

2019-06-30 Thread lukycrociato
Actually, it did not solved the problem on my AMD desktop, but so far on
my Intel laptop it seems fine

Title:
System freeze when memory is put on SWAP in Linux >4.10.x

Status in Linux:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm reporting this since it's reproduceable the 70% of the time.
  Summary:

In different circumstances, when the systems starts to swap out RAM
memory, even small amounts, the system becomes completely unusuable
and the screen freezes up, no mouse movement, no TTY access or SSH
access can be made, only SYSRQ keys seem to do something (only reboot,
so REISUB worked so far though, OOM is useless since the memory/swap
  is not even full)

The I/O Disk led is stuck to 100% in ALL the following cases when this
  happens.

  So far:
  - This happens even when only ZRAM is enabled, and no swap partition is used.
  - Happens when ZSWAP is used with a swap partition
  - Happens also when a partition without zram or zswap is used
  - Maybe it's AMD specific?

However, I'm not experiencing this on my laptop using the same tests.

My laptop is an Intel one, while my desktop is an AMD Ryzen platform.

  Here are the specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 no OC
  GPU: AMD RX 580 8GB
  SSD: Crucial MX500 500GB
  MOBO: MSI B350M Grenade
  RAM: 8GB HyperX Kingston 2667Mhz

Ubuntu version: 18.04 LTS, backports repo enabled
Kernel version: 4.18.0-18, official ubuntu repo
  Bios settings: Default

Additional info: Maybe I'm not 100% sure, but I noticed when using the
5.0.0-17 generic kernel, the lockups seem to still happen, but they
recover eventually. Happened only a few times though...

But will always be frozen for at least 30 seconds, differently from my
intel laptop where those do occur.

The SSD make is the same. I bought two of these, they got also the
  same amount of RAM.

In my laptop those do not occur at all. Swapping memory even huge
quantities like 1GB or more, do not produce any issues.

  Tests made:
For testing this behaviour I tried:

  - Compiling the chromium-browser source code (takes up a lot of system
  RAM)

  - Used the "stress" command, using a specific amount of memory to
decide how many it will be swapped, and here I noticed that even small
quantities like a couple of megabytes will cause the system to freeze
  the 70% of the times

  Example: "stress --vm 1 --vm-bytes=7G"

  What should happen:
I expect system slowdowns when swapping out memory since I do not have enough
RAM, but unlikely when using Windows or my laptop with the same Linux version,
not a completely unusuable environment. The swap partition is in both cases on
an SSD.

  Reproduceability: 70% of the times

  Additional info again:
I'm not sure this is due to any hardware failure, my SSD health is fine, as
my CPU and RAM. As I said swapping in Windows works fine...

I confirm this also works very nicely for me.

Thanks. Not it doesn't slow down at all.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1759836] Re: systemd-udevd consumes 100% of CPU

2019-06-30 Thread August Pamplona
Mortimer, it's still available at the Google cache:
https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Ulh1YXwMuK8J:https://dev.getsol.us/T5224

It appears that the fix there addresses the same file and the same line
in that file. However, the lines are simply being deleted there & it
breaks Bluetooth so I wouldn't go that route (though at the time I did
due to not knowing any better).

They are also placing it at a different location, /etc/udev/rules.d/,
and I don't know the significance of that.

And to address what others are saying, yes, hand editing a system file
(and one, at that, which is headed by the comment line "# do not edit
this file, it will be overwritten on update") is not an optimal
solution.

youtube vid in browser,...) I do, the sound works OK for about 2-3 seconds, and
then stops and becomes silent.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834782] Re: ASUS Zenbook UX433FN: sound stops working after a couple of seconds

2019-06-30 Thread Mark
I am not sure if this is a kernel/FW issue, as the soundcard is recognized and
the sound playes at first.
On the other hand there were not changes/updates to alsa, pulseaudio and the
sound used to work ok before.

These problems started to appear cca a month ago(?) but usually "some
trick" made it work again (I didn't identify exactly what), like
++volume key after the sound stoped working, this does not help anymore.

Bug description:
  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U

The latest correctly working kernel was 4.13.* but the heat problem
  was present with this too.

acpi_osi="Linux"? That's all? Or do you append other parameters,

Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't

Bug description:
  CPU: Ryzen 5 2500U
