Title:
Dell Alienware Aurora R9 ubuntu 18.04LTS installation issue - Dual
  boot - UEFI

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Issue:- Getting blank screen after the initial install grub prompt.

Tried acpi=off, nomodeset parameters added in grub still no luck

Note:- Ubuntu 20.04 LTS worked without any issues.

  Env:-

UEFI - Dual boot, secure boot disabled, SATA to AHCI

  Bios vers - 1.0.7

  $find /sys/devices -name "edid"

  /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-HDMI-A-1/edid

  /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-DP-1/edid

  RTX 2080 SUPER] (rev a1)

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU104 [GeForce
  RTX 2080 SUPER] (rev a1)

  ===

nomodeset:- defined to instructs the kernel to not load video drivers
and use BIOS modes instead until X is loaded.

Surprisingly this desktop comes with single HDMI slot. And there is no
any DP port. We need to rely on this one. Apart from the
nomodeset/acpi=off, is there any grub parameter can I try here? Please
  suggest.

Please note:- we need to rely on 18.04 LTS due to application
  compatibility.

  Please suggest

  Thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1878194] Re: [Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC] Bluetooth headset not working when selecting HSP/HFP audio profile in Focal Fossa

2020-06-06 Thread Hui Wang
Just run sudo apt dist-upgrade on my ubuntu 20.04 and tested with 2 BT
headsets (QC35s and harman kardon soho wireless). both a2dp and hsp/hfp
worked well, both output and input worked well.

After the headset is connected, it is a2dp profile. I could change to
hsp/hfp from gnome-sound-setting, both the output and input worked well
with hsp/hfp profile. Or I also tested changed profile with pacmd set-
card-profile 1 headset-..., it also worked well.

So for those who have this problem, what are the detailed steps to
reproduce this issue?

Title:
[Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC] Bluetooth headset not working when selecting
HSP/HFP audio profile in Focal Fossa

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After updating the release from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04, the bluetooth
headset doesn't work anymore when HSP/HFP profile is selected.

With Ubuntu 19.10 the headset was working, there was audio and the mic
  was perfect for video conferencing.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Connect headset (used blueman to setup and connect)
1.1. When connected the system automatically selects A2DP profile
  2. Start playing audio (browser or other)
  3. Change profile to HSP/HFP with pavucontrol (or blueman)
  4. The audio disappears
  5. Optionally switch back to A2DP and the audio comes back

  [Expected]
When switching to HSP/HFP the audio should keep playing and the microphone
should start working

  [Notes]
I tried with pavucontrol to switch between profiles while playing audio from
a browser.
As side note there's a led in the headset that still blinks when switching
profile.

I tried deleting the pulse folder under user's profile .config without
success, also reinstalled packages and did a `sudo alsa force-reload`
  and rebooting several times.

Note: not sure this is a duplicate of [Bug #1576559], it looks quite
different since the profile changes but the headset stops working.

  [System info]
  Ubuntu: 20.04 - Linux 5.4.0-29-generic x86_64
  pulseaudio: 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3
  bluez: 5.53-0ubuntu3

  Headset: Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC

I can also vouch that I run into this issue on a Lenovo Y530-15ICH after
upgrading to Focal Fossa. I haven't upgraded my BIOS (I'm afraid to
until I'm certain I'm doing it correctly).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1874933] Re: Performance workaround for Dell 7390 2-in-1 Ice Lake

2020-06-06 Thread Jin-Dong Kim
Is this fix going to be released? Or, abandoned? I got a
XPS-13-7390-2-in-1, and was waiting for the release of this fix. If
necessary, I may want to provide a test.

Title:
Performance workaround for Dell 7390 2-in-1 Ice Lake

Status in thermald package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in thermald source package in Focal:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  == SRU justification focal ==

  As reported here:

https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-graphics-x-org-drivers/intel-linux/1174225-dell-xps-7390-intel-ice-lake-performance-hit-hard-by-a-linux-kernel-regression?view=stream

This primarily impacts "Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)." as it switched to
5.4 kernel.
The 5.4 kernel added support for "Processor thermal device", for Ice Lake,
which will expose the power tables (via PPCC).

This system default "max RAPL long term power limit" is 15W. But this
power table is specifying as 9W. So thermald will limit power to 9W.

If dptfxtract is executed, then power limit will be higher than power
up value, but most of the users will use out of the box setup. So this
  need a workaround.

This workaround will ignore any power limit less than the power up
  power limit.

This is addressed in thermald 2.1 with two commits:

https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/commit/f7db434293387c965e8d9141608f855893740e3a

https://github.com/intel/thermal_daemon/commit/c3461690eafb7304bf59a39fb02955a5154b3861

I know 20.04 LTS uses 1.9.1. I can assist in backport if required.

  == Fix ==

Two upstream commits to ease backporting:
     - eeadf7d2efe Restore to min state on deactivation without
   depending on hardware state
     - 9a6dc27879a Clean up the code and documentation

Two upstream commits for the fix:
     - f7db4342933 Avoid polling power in non PPCC case
     - c3461690eaf Ignore invalid PPCC max power limit

  == Test case ==

  As reported here: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-
  graphics-x-org-drivers/intel-linux/1174225-dell-xps-7390-intel-ice-
  lake-performance-hit-hard-by-a-linux-kernel-regression?view=stream

  == Regression Potential ==

This fix involves changing the power limits logic so there is a potential
that this may affect change the throttling behaviour of other systems with
poorly defined PPCC power tables because it now ignores the power limits
less than the power up limits. Users will see their machines run faster
and hence active cooling may crank up (e.g. fans) but I think the speed
  improvement outweighs the noise factor.

Note that these changes are already in thermald 2.1 that is now in
  Ubuntu Groovy 20.10.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1873325] Re: update-initramfs complains of missing amdgpu firmware files

Title:
update-initramfs complains of missing amdgpu firmware files

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Focal:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

Impact: amdgpu references firmware files in modinfo which have not
been supplied to linux-firmware. This causes update-initramfs to
  generate "Possible missing firmware" warnings.

Fix: Since the firmware is not available, all we can do is remove the
  files from modinfo.

Test Case: Confirm that update-initramfs no longer produces the
  warnings.

Regression Potential: Low. If someone had managed to obtain these
files they will no longer be added to the initramfs, potentially
causing regressions for these users. This would be an atypical
  situation.

  ---

Ubuntu 20.04 during initramfs update reports missing firmware files:
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi12_vcn.bin for module
amdgpu
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/arcturus_vcn.bin for module

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1881828] Re: Lenovo X1 Extreme screen never wakes up

2020-06-06 Thread Kelly Kane
I heavily used the laptop over the course of another day and half. Zero
crashes! I did everything in my power to induce the failure mode I was
previously seeing and nada. I closed the lid with wreckless abandon,
left it open, locked it, plugged in, on battery, etc. So far so good.
kern.log is clean.

Let me know what if anything else you would like me to do. Happy to test
a backport or whatever.

ubuntu packaged kernel revisions. I got kernel taint down to "0" and
it kept happening. (Previously virtualbox and nvidia driver were in

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1881214] Re: syslog and kern.log grow endlessly - related to channel switch, Intel wifi?

2020-06-06 Thread nyarla33
Had the same issue again today when the router changed the channel from
52 to 36. Same log files.

I guess a workaround is to stick to the 2.4 Ghz band with which I have
not experienced channel switch.

Title:
syslog and kern.log grow endlessly - related to channel switch, Intel
  wifi?

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu Mate 20.04, with all supplied kernels up to 5.4.0.33

I occasionally see a message on my screen that disk space is low. I
try rebooting since my computer is unresponsive. Normal reboot does
not work, sudo reboot does not work. I have to power off the machine
using power button. Machine boots but hangs because its trying to
  repair journal info.

I can't see what causes that since I was not using my computer at the time.
  edit: see comment #14

So with a live session, I can see that syslog and kern.log files have
grown to several GB until the drive is full.

When using an upstream kernel 5.4.43-050443-generic x86_64, I haven't had any
problem so far.
edit: not true actually, this happened again using this upstream kernel.

Never had this issue with previous Ubuntu versions with the very same
  hardware configuration, since 16.04.

Included: partial syslog and kern.log with the same message repeated over and
over.
edit: and when the event starts.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1521173] Re: AER: Corrected error received: id=00e0

2020-06-06 Thread piscvau
on PC MSI GE73, installation of Xubuntu 18.04 fails,as well as XUBUNTU 19.10.
PC was returned to MSI under warranty. Hardware is correct and no problem with
windows.
WIth the latest BIOS it is now impossible to boot the PC with an ISO USB key
for version 18.04 and 19.10.
WIth XUBUNTU 20.04 the PC boots but after entering session, the system crashes.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1882376] [NEW] Can't connect to external audio TaoTronics TT-BA07

2020-06-06 Thread Albert Cardona
Public bug reported:

>From my iphone and chromebook I can see the external speakers plugged to
a TaoTronics TT-BA07 bluetooth device.

But from Ubuntu 20.04, the device doesn't appear listed in the settings.
There is listed a deviced named "1" that, when connecting to, appears to
be a sound device, but from the sound settings "test" buttons I can't
get any sound to play.

Any hints as to how I could triage this issue and collect more details?

Title:
Can't connect to external audio TaoTronics TT-BA07

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
From my iphone and chromebook I can see the external speakers plugged
to a TaoTronics TT-BA07 bluetooth device.

But from Ubuntu 20.04, the device doesn't appear listed in the
settings. There is listed a deviced named "1" that, when connecting
to, appears to be a sound device, but from the sound settings "test"
buttons I can't get any sound to play.

Any hints as to how I could triage this issue and collect more
  details?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1767654] Re: [Intel Braswell] Cursor gets stuck on left side of the screen

2020-06-06 Thread Bob Lawrence
I can confirm that the problem is present with both the intel and the
modesetting driver on Braswell systems. The exact symptoms differ for
each, but in both cases it is triggered when the mouse touches the left
limit of the screen. With modesetting, it seems to "stick" until you
move the mouse away from the left side. With intel, touching the left
side starts a flickering that persists even after you move the mouse
away. Mainly, just the mouse cursor flickers, but the whole screen will
flicker when doing graphics intensive tasks like fullscreen video or
gaming. Sometimes, the mouse flicker can be so bad it becomes nearly
invisible.

I have made full report on the bug report thread opened by Salvatore.

The good news is I found a workaround, you can use xrandr to scale the
display to 0.x0. and this prevents the issues in both intel and
modesetting. This can be done in your .xprofile in your home directory
to take effect at login. It does come with a slight performance penalty,
but it's preferable to the glitching that happens otherwise (at least
until someone fixes the regression).

xrandr --output HDMI-3 --mode 1920x1080 --scale 0.x0.

Replace "HDMI-3" with the name of your display (can be found by running
xrandr with no options).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1879547] Re: wl driver 6.30.223.271 (r587334) failed with code 1

2020-06-06 Thread Antonio Carianha
Now, when I boot Ubuntu, sometimes wireless card work and sometimes not.

I think that i found the problem.

PCI device_id sometimes is wrongly recognized as 0x4360 and sometimes is
rightly recognized as 0x43a0.

Looks like it is a read only register, cannot easily use setpci to
correct the problem.

Keyboard won't pair, but can be "trusted" and "connected" and then it's usable.
But doesn't reconnect automatically of course.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848921] Re: iwlwifi firmware crashes intel 9260ac [8086:2526] subsystem [8086:0010]

2020-06-06 Thread Massimiliano Mantione
I am on 20.04, kernel "5.4.0-33-generic".
I also see this problem.
The easiest way to trigger it is to run an ADSL speed test, then the system
freezes at random for several seconds and the iwlwifi log messages are the same
as the initial bug report.

I had the problem in the past on 19.10, kept it at bay sticking to a 5.0
kernel kept from a 19.04 install.

After months the problem went away, it's not clear with which kernel. I
just booted on a new kernel by mistake and the system worked properly.

A few days ago the problem resurfaced on 19.10, and my old 5.0 kernel was not
working anymore.
Sometimes I stay weeks or months without rebooting...

I tried upgrading to 20.04 but it did not help.

I tried fresh installs of Fedora 32 and Ubuntu 20.04, and in both cases the
live boot did not have the issue but the system after install did, but *mostly*
after enabling Nvidia drivers.
My problem is that I need CUDA so Nvidia drivers are a must for me.

What is working now is symlinking "iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-46.ucode" to
"iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.ucode" as described in a previous comment.

I did not even have to download "iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.ucode", I
already had it in place.

Setting "11n_disable=1" made the issue smaller but did not eliminate it, and
the resulting network slowdown was unacceptable.
Trying "backport-iwlwifi-dkms" did not help either.

At this point this is a fresh install of 20.04 and the only workaround I
have is the firmware downgrade.

I am available for testing experimental "backport-iwlwifi-dkms" versions
if needed.

Title:
iwlwifi firmware crashes intel 9260ac [8086:2526] subsystem
  [8086:0010]

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 19.10
  Kernel 5.3.0-18-generic
Hardware: Thinkpad T460p (also tested on T480s) with Intel 9260ac wifi card.

Expected: Wifi connects, uploads/downloads as normal

Symptom: Wifi connects, as soon as an upload/download (any heavy
traffic) start, the system comes to a crawl, becomes barely usable,
and I end up opening a prompt to reboot.

The system is unusable. This happens even with the Live USB version.

The only solution I found was to download a different (newer) firmware.
  Latest version from: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi

  This is iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-34.618819.0.tgz

I then manually copy the contained firmware to /lib/firmware, remove
all other versions and make a link to iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-46.ucode
that the kernel expects to load.

  This completely resolves the issue.

This is the carsh log (Thinkpad T460p, but identical to T480s, all fresh
installs):

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1882339] [NEW] Unable to use multiple cards ath_9k , TP-Link WN722N

2020-06-06 Thread Bartłomiej Żogała
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to connect multiple WiFi cards through powered USB hubs but
unfortunately some logic does detect them in lsusb but doesn't create
appropriate ammount of interfaces. Additionaly from 3 connected TP-Link WN722N
cards only one have light blinking what's usually means firmware was loaded
properly. Also serial numer is constant 12345 for all 3 tplink cards:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1878544] Re: kernel NULL pointer dereference when plugging/unpluggin USB-c (power or hub)

2020-06-06 Thread Victor
@Koba,

I have tried with the latest generic kernel 5.4.0-33 but the problem still
persists. Are you sure that the bug was corrected in v33?
Thank you for your time and help!

Title:
kernel NULL pointer dereference when plugging/unpluggin USB-c (power
  or hub)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Asus Zenbook Flip S (UX-370UAR). Intel Core i7-8550U CPU).
The X freezes and doesnt even allow to start a console session.

Only happening on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04.
Does not happen in the same computer under Ubuntu 16.04 or Windows 10.

Can be replicated easily. Every time I plug/unplug the power USB-C or
the USB-c hub. Mostly, on any interaction with the USB-c or I/O ports.

  If I plug/unplug the USB-c without X in a console session (CTRL+ALT+F3) I get
the following:
BUG: kernel NULL point dereference, address: 0080
   ...
   Workqueue: events ucsi_connector_change [typec_usci]
   RIP: 0010:ucsi_displayport_remove_partner+0xe/0x30 [typec_usci]
   ...
