Title:
new update of Ubuntu Focal Fossa does not recognize any Wifi network

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When the system was upgraded to Ubuntu version 20.04, WiFi stopped
working. It does not recognize any network, or it does recognize it
when the computer is turned on but soon after it stops recognizing it
and the connection is lost, so there is no other option but to use the
Internet connected with an Ethernet cable.

The solution I found to this problem is to select from grub the Kernel
versions that did not have this problem (5.3). That worked fine so far, but
yesterday the kernel was updated again, and the system removed the 5.3 kernel
working versions, so I can no longer select them from grub.
It only left several versions 5.4.0, which all have this same problem

I downloaded the packages of various kernel 5.3.0 versions (headers,
modules and image) from https://packages.ubuntu.com/, and I can get
them up fine from grub, but when I do this, for some reason the
computer works very badly (the screens take time to load, the mouse
moves slowly, the machine works slowly, not all the menu options
  appear, etc)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895482] [NEW] new update of Ubuntu Focal Fossa does not recognize any Wifi network

2020-09-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When the system was upgraded to Ubuntu version 20.04, WiFi stopped
working. It does not recognize any network, or it does recognize it when
the computer is turned on but soon after it stops recognizing it and the
connection is lost, so there is no other option but to use the Internet
connected with an Ethernet cable.

The solution I found to this problem is to select from grub the Kernel versions
that did not have this problem (5.3). That worked fine so far, but yesterday

versions, so I can no longer select them from grub.
It only left several versions 5.4.0, which all have this same problem

I downloaded the packages of various kernel 5.3.0 versions (headers,
modules and image) from https://packages.ubuntu.com/, and I can get them
up fine from grub, but when I do this, for some reason the computer
works very badly (the screens take time to load, the mouse moves slowly,
the machine works slowly, not all the menu options appear, etc)

Title:
  Acer TravelMate B3 screen rotated

Status in iio-sensor-proxy package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,
I just installed 20.04.1 on a brand new Acer TravelMate B3.

  - First I tried Lubuntu 20.04.0 from a USB stick without problems, X11
working correctly. I did not install it because it was a 20.04.0

  - Then I put a reguluar Ubuntu Desktop 20.04.1 on a USB stick and
bootet from it. Even the console text output is normal for some time
and then is rotated by 90 degree to the left.

The X11 (installation) screen then comes up completely rotated
counterclockwise bei 90 degree. I then need to do a xrand --output
eDP-1 --rotate normal to get things straight. Works normal then.

After installation it came up rotated again, even the login screen is rotated
90°

But sorry, can't help in debugging. If I don't find a permanent solution, I
need to install Lubuntu or Xubuntu, because I need to get this notebook up and
running by tomorrow.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1834085] Re: Bluetooth touchpad (Apple Magic Trackpad) disconnects every few minutes

2020-09-13 Thread Luke Midworth
I'm on kernel 5.8.8 and am experiencing what I think is the exact same
issue with my Magic Trackpad 1

Title:
Bluetooth touchpad (Apple Magic Trackpad) disconnects every few
  minutes

Status in Linux:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I recently got an Apple's Magic Trackpad. I paired it with Ubuntu
18.04.2 LTS and worked out of the box, no special drivers needed.

However, I experience frequent disconnections that last a few seconds
(5-15 seconds usually), which are quite annoying, as the cursor stops
responding during that interval. The trackpad connects by itself after
that period. That usually happens every 20-40 minutes.

I use the onboard bluetooth device of my laptop. I also have, at the
same time, two more bluetooth devices (keyboard and mouse) and they do
not experience that issue, just the trackpad. On ocassion I use
bluetooth headphones which work just fine.

  First of all:

Using the command "bluetoothctl" I get the following every time I
  experience a disconnection:

  [CHG] Device F4:1B:A1:33:F9:8D Connected: no
  [CHG] Device F4:1B:A1:33:F9:8D Connected: yes

Checking "dmesg" I can see more information: (if I am not mistaken,
  this shows 4 disconnections)

2020-09-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The system menu (top right of the screen) also allows you to lock the
screen rotation.

** Summary changed:

- X11 screen rotated
+ Acer TravelMate B3 screen rotated

** Package changed: xorg-server (Ubuntu) => iio-sensor-proxy (Ubuntu)

** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

Title:
  Acer TravelMate B3 screen rotated

Status in iio-sensor-proxy package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895297] Re: My wifi adapter isn't working

2020-09-13 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-09-13 Thread PowerKiKi
This new script also works for me, thanks.

However, with both versions of the script sound will stop working after
~30 seconds of inactivity. So it is not "sticky" in my case. An easy
workaround is to play an audio file on infinite loop with volume down to
zero. This will keep the speakers enabled forever without any side-
effect.

I can live with that for a while.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've been googling this issue for 10's of hours and tried many things.

  Relase of Ubuntu: 19.10

Expected outcome: Music plays on the internal speakers and headphones.

Actual outcome: I can barely hear audio using headphones with volume
turned up to 150%. Absolutely nothing comes out of the speakers. (The
speakers sound great under Windows 10.)

Title:
Internet disconnected unexpectly + Xorg freeze while watching html5
  video in Chrome

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  A few issues:

  1)With Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560, under kernel 5.4 for Ubuntu 20.04.1,
the system sometimes gets disconnected with the network and I get the
  following error in syslog:

iwlwifi: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS

It is unclear if this is the cause of the problem, but this is likely
  related to kernel.

  2) Watching HTML5 videos on Chrome with Nvidia GPU (440 driver) will
sometimes cause xorg freeze. The exact cause is unknown. (Mouse,
control all freeze for 5-10 seconds)

  3) After Wake up from sleep got the following error on screen

sof-audio-pci error: no reply expected, received 0x0
iwlwifi: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS

  4) After wake up from a long sleep session, sometimes chrome will not
render web page correctly or even freeze. It is unclear if its a
Chrome problem, or a Nvidia problem, or a Kernel Problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-09-13 Thread John Hoff
@PowerKiKi
@terrymagnusdrever
@gannon1

Just to document this for anyone else that might benefit, attached is
the final script I created. I reduced the previous list further from
788 to 358 verbs. There may be a few extra ones left, but probably not
many based on my testing, as removing more tends to lose one speaker or
not generate enough volume or other weird unexpected side effects. Its
definitely a long sequence of blocks of data that is critical as opposed
to one or two single statements. Anyway this smaller list appears to
achieve the original goal. If anyone ever wants to reduce further, the
data is broken into many blocks that look something like this (where the
row right after the one that ends with 0x23 appears to be most important
- so in this case its one of the 0x20 blocks):

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x26
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0xc00 0x0
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x23
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0x20
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0x0
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0xc0
sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x4b0 0x11

Once you learn to work with the data as blocks it gets a lot easier to
sort.

Anyway, as far as what to do with this script

I was not able to make a kernel patch that worked (maybe Mike can) and I
was not able to get early patching to work (which could be me because I
have never had any success with early patching). Originally I was just
running the script manually at boot, but I found that just creating a
simple systemd daemon does the trick (steps below). Now when I boot I
have full sound and it seems to last for a while. What was most
unexpected was that I also added back the single HDA verb for the
headphones (which I specifically tried and found did not work before as
a stand alone daemon) and now my headphones work along with the speakers
WITHOUT using the custom kernel patch that Mike created. Bizarre, but
whatever works.

Since my last script worked for PowerKiKi I feel confident this will
work for most Ion owners, but there is nothing in the script that is
truly specific to the Ion laptop. The Samsung Flex was released on the
same day and appears to have the same audio hardware, so likely this
works for flex users too. It may also work for pro or always users, I
am just not as sure on the hardware on those.

Steps to create daemon

1) Place the verb script in whatever location you prefer (it needs to
stay in one spot)

2) Make the permissions on the script file 777 and +x

3) Create a new daemon file named
/etc/systemd/system/ionsound.service

4) Place this text in your new daemon file

[Unit]
After=network.service

[Service]
ExecStart={full path to where you placed the file}/TO912.sh

[Install]
WantedBy=default.target

5) Update the daemon file permissions to 664

sudo chmod 664 /etc/systemd/system/ionsound.service

6) Activate the daemon

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable ionsound.service

7) Reboot and you should have sound

Title:
PRIME Profiles Not Shown in nvidia-settings

Status in nvidia-settings package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi,

I've installed Nvidia 450 on new installation of Ubuntu 20.04.1.

Prime Render Offload works in manual mode with
  `__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia`

But nvidia-settings says prime is not supported.
And so I have no prime entry in the nvidia window.

So I think the swith between integrated and nvidia GPU will not be
automatic and the "on demand" does not work.

I asked nvidia developpers and they said it should be a ubuntu patch :

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895327] Re: PRIME Profiles Not Shown in nvidia-settings

You're welcome. I subscribed the "Graphics Drivers" team that are responsible
for the PPA. Maybe they can answer why you lack Prime Profiles and receive the
message:
ERROR: nvidia-settings could not find the registry key file.

OK thank you for your answer.
I understand know : only "manual" switch.

Good news for me : everything works as it have to do. Only a little GUI
bug.

You are right to change the title.

2020-09-13 Thread Daniel Letzeisen
"For me 'On Demand' should be automatic."
That is not how Nvidia is using the term:
https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/450.66/README/primerenderoffload.html
Again, automatic/seamless switching is not available on Linux.

"I only have nvidia GPU working (and consumption about 10W) when using the
prefix"
That is expected. Just querying the GPU will not be enough to to ramp it up to
full power. You can try nvidia-smi when you're running something demanding on
the GPU and you'll likely see more power usage.

"In nvidia-settings I don't have a PRIME Profiles"
That is an issue. But keep in mind that is only a glorified GUI way of using
'sudo prime-select'
It wouldn't change anything since 'prime-select query' already shows you're
already in on-demand mode.

** Summary changed:

- PRIME Render Offload "On-Demand" not supported
+ PRIME Profiles Not Shown in nvidia-settings

** Package changed: nvidia-graphics-drivers-450 (Ubuntu) => nvidia-
settings (Ubuntu)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895449] [NEW] Internet disconnected unexpectly + Xorg freeze while watching html5 video in Chrome

2020-09-13 Thread Mike Gao
Public bug reported:

A few issues:

1)With Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9560, under kernel 5.4 for Ubuntu 20.04.1,
the system sometimes gets disconnected with the network and I get the
following error in syslog:

iwlwifi: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS

It is unclear if this is the cause of the problem, but this is likely
related to kernel.

2) Watching HTML5 videos on Chrome with Nvidia GPU (440 driver) will
sometimes cause xorg freeze. The exact cause is unknown. (Mouse, control
all freeze for 5-10 seconds)

3) After Wake up from sleep got the following error on screen

sof-audio-pci error: no reply expected, received 0x0
iwlwifi: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS

4) After wake up from a long sleep session, sometimes chrome will not
render web page correctly or even freeze. It is unclear if its a Chrome
problem, or a Nvidia problem, or a Kernel Problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1878194] Re: [Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC] Bluetooth headset not working when selecting HSP/HFP audio profile in Focal Fossa

2020-09-13 Thread Olivier JUDITH
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1871794 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1871794

Don't know if that can help but i moved to 5.8.1 kernel . It works well with my
previous workaround :
remove ibt- * from /lib/firmware/intel then copy all ibt-* from
linux-firmware_1.183.2_all.deb

It works fine until an apt-upgrade installs the new latest linux-
firmware 1.187.3 .

This time i do the first step again but nothing work . So i reinstalled
linux-firmware 1.187.3 and i deleted all ibt-12* then update-initramfs -u -k
`uname -r` .
It works now, until the next update i suppose.

This time no firmware it loaded at boot for bluetooth

Title:
[Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC] Bluetooth headset not working when selecting
HSP/HFP audio profile in Focal Fossa

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After updating the release from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04, the bluetooth
headset doesn't work anymore when HSP/HFP profile is selected.

With Ubuntu 19.10 the headset was working, there was audio and the mic
  was perfect for video conferencing.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Connect headset (used blueman to setup and connect)
1.1. When connected the system automatically selects A2DP profile
  2. Start playing audio (browser or other)
  3. Change profile to HSP/HFP with pavucontrol (or blueman)
  4. The audio disappears and microphone is not working (no input)
  5. Optionally switch back to A2DP and the audio comes back

  [Expected]
When switching to HSP/HFP the audio should keep playing and the microphone
should start working

  [Notes]
I tried with pavucontrol to switch between profiles while playing audio from
a browser.
As side note there's a led in the headset that still blinks when switching
profile.

I tried deleting the pulse folder under user's profile .config without
success, also reinstalled packages and did a `sudo alsa force-reload`
  and rebooting several times.

Note: not sure this is a duplicate of [Bug #1576559], it looks quite
different since the profile changes but the headset stops working.

  [System info]
  Ubuntu: 20.04 - Linux 5.4.0-29-generic x86_64
  pulseaudio: 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3
  bluez: 5.53-0ubuntu3

  Headset: Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC

Title:
Display corruption after suspend with recent kernel update

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
For the last few days, after suspending and resuming, I get display
corruption in Google Chrome. Parts of the UI are replaces with black
boxes. Resizing the window causes it to redraw but if I switch back
to the original size then it goes back to black. I noticed it on
5.4.0-47 and backed down to 5.4.0-45 but still see the same. Looks
like 5.4.0-45 was only released a few days before 5.4.0-47 so maybe I
didn't reboot in that time. Those are the only upgrades I can see in
  the right timeframe.

I had a look in dmesg and saw some warnings; not sure if they're
  related:

I had a look in dmesg and saw some warnings; not sure if they're
  related:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895434] Re: Display corruption after suspend with recent kernel update

2020-09-13 Thread Shaun Crampton
Looks like the black boxes aren't the only corruption I see; websites
like this one aren't rendering properly either, content is smearing like
it's not being redrawn properly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1895434] [NEW] Display corruption after suspend with recent kernel update

2020-09-13 Thread Shaun Crampton
Public bug reported:

For the last few days, after suspending and resuming, I get display
corruption in Google Chrome. Parts of the UI are replaces with black
boxes. Resizing the window causes it to redraw but if I switch back to
the original size then it goes back to black. I noticed it on 5.4.0-47
and backed down to 5.4.0-45 but still see the same. Looks like 5.4.0-45
was only released a few days before 5.4.0-47 so maybe I didn't reboot in
that time. Those are the only upgrades I can see in the right
timeframe.

I had a look in dmesg and saw some warnings; not sure if they're
related:

2020-09-13 Thread Zsolt Farago
Same problem here, first missing rtl8125a-3.fw then missing
rtl8168fp-3.fw on ubuntu 18.04 using ubuntu 20 kernel version.

Had to download by hand.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2020-09-13 Thread Tony Thuitai
Applied the 'fix' from Comment #11 by vmc(vmclark) in Linux Mint 20. The
error is no longer logged. Some boots on my HP laptop with a 5400RPM
spinning Hard drive are slow but some are faster but some around the
same time with lz4. Hard disk performance on my laptop is better with
gzip than lz4. With lz4 the PC extremely lags when some apt packages are
being set up and configured and some final configurations after most or
all packages are installed, set up and configured but with gzip, the lag
never occurs and PC is usable. Hard disk read benchmarks are better with
gzip than with lz4. I think that lz4 is more suitable for an SSD than a
spinning hard drive

Title:
  initramfs unpacking failed

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
"initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on
  boot up.

If I "update-initramfs" using gzip instead of lz, then boot up passes
  without decoding failed message.

  ---

However, we currently believe that the decoding error reported in
dmesg is actually harmless and has no impact on usability on the
  system.

Switching from lz4 to gzip compression, simply papers over the
warning, without any benefits, and slows down boot.

Kernel should be fixed to correctly parse lz4 compressed initrds, or
at least lower the warning, to not be user visible as an error.
