Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1899882] Re: hdmi monitor on

2020-12-28 Thread John Dunlap
It's pretty jerky. Then after a number of cycles of blinking screen on the
laptop and the dock seemingly being restarted (the Ethernet kept going off
and on) the external screen came to life and now the system seems to be
operating normally. I did fiddle with the "Display" GUI a bit before it
stopped being jerky. Attached is the dmesg. -- John

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1899882] Re: hdmi monitor on

2020-12-28 Thread John Dunlap
Thanks. I got -4007-oem to run. At boot it presented correctly with a
login box on the external screen and the laptop screen available. However
when I logged in both screens went blank for a bit after which only the
laptop screen was alive but it wasn't the primary so just blank. Right
clicking allowed me to get the "Display" GUI and fiddle around. After
poking buttons a bit I could get the external screen to come alive but it
was pretty mixed up so I have reverted to the -1008-oem. I am using xfce
rather than gnome. Regards, John

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1899882] Re: hdmi monitor on

2020-12-28 Thread John Dunlap
Got all five .deb files then used this command:
sudo apt install ./*.deb
But, when choosing the -4007-oem kernel it says the signature is wrong and
quits.
The -1008-oem kernel still doesn't start the external display and the dock
doesn't run right away. (Ethernet doesn't work).
Back to 5.6.0-1036-oem.

  == SRU Justification ==
  [Impact]
Touchpad on sereval Lenovo ThinkBook doesn't work.

  [Fix]
Maintain method calling ordering by calling _REG before issuing _STA, as
ACPI spec suggested, for I2C ACPI devices.

  [Test]
  Positive feedback from several users.

  [Regression Potential]
If there are some systems that rely on the wrong calling ordering then
there's a regression risk. However it's rather unlikely.

This is happening on a ThinkBook 14 IML 20RV.

Hi Koba,

I got these warnings during apt install linux-image-oem-20.04-edge:
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/tgl_huc_7.5.0.bin for
module i915
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/tgl_huc_7.5.0.bin for

dunlap@lt9:~/Desktop$ uname -a
Linux lt9 5.10.0-1008-oem #9-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 15 14:22:38 UTC 2020 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
dunlap@lt9:~/Desktop$

With 5.10.0-1008-oem the external monitor does not turn on when first
booted. It does turn on with 5.6.0-1036-oem but not in the configuration
I had previously chosen.

By fiddling with the "Display" GUI from the "Settings" menu I can finally
get it turned on but that state is not maintained on boot.

Also, the external display is off for perhaps 30 to 60 s after booting
during which time the dock seems to be off because I finally get a notice
that the Ethernet connection comes on.

The dock seems to be turned off and then on during some of my interactions
with the "Display" GUI. All quite slowly.
I will go back to 5.6.0-1036-oem for now.

Thanks for your help. Regards, John

Bug description:
I see this error frequently inside logs: iwlwifi :03:00.0: No
beacon heard and the time event is over already...

Also, the internet doesn't seem stable, from time to time it
disconnects and reconnects on its own, and other times it disconnects
and wants me to enter the key again to connect. However, if i hit the
X button to close the password modal and try to connect again from the
networks list, it does connect without the need to enter the password.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).

2020-12-28 Thread Richard Merren
I installed pulseaudio-modules-bt and it does give some new options for
sound output and possibly better sound, but microphone sound quality was
still iffy. Recorded sound on Audacity seemed better and was slightly
louder (according to the DB meter), but a test call on Microsoft Teams
was still muffled and unintelligible.

I have ordered a Avantree DG80 dongle (which makes the bluetooth
connection externally and appears to linux as usb audio) and will
hopefully be able to continue working with that, but I would love to see
this problem resolved in pulseaudio.

For the record, I am using a Sony WH-1000XM4 headset on PopOS 20.10
running on a System76 Darter Pro.

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/77dd0cb94c1713a8a12f6e392955dfa64c430e54

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909499] [NEW] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: No beacon heard and the time event is over already...

2020-12-28 Thread Lyubomir
Public bug reported:

I see this error frequently inside logs: iwlwifi :03:00.0: No beacon
heard and the time event is over already...

Also, the internet doesn't seem stable, from time to time it disconnects
and reconnects on its own, and other times it disconnects and wants me
to enter the key again to connect. However, if i hit the X button to
close the password modal and try to connect again from the networks
list, it does connect without the need to enter the password.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909417] Re: ubuntu server for raspberry pi 400 will not unpack to SD

2020-12-28 Thread Sophist
@guiverc Thank you for the pointer. I downloaded and installed the
Raspberry Pi imager for windows and tried to unpack the server image -
and it worked.

So apparently some sort of incompatibility with Balena Etcher.

Bug description:
I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 on a Huawei Matebook 13 AMD laptop which seems
to use a Realtek RTL8822CE Wifi/Bluetooth combo adapter.

I've been unsuccessful to pair with 2 different bluetooth mice.
However bluetooth seems to work with other devices. I'm under the
impression that this problem only happens with Bluetooth LE devices.

Trying to pair using bluetoothctl fails with the
  org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationCanceled error:

  [bluetooth]# pair E5:5B:67:2A:09:76
  Attempting to pair with E5:5B:67:2A:09:76

  [CHG] Device E5:5B:67:2A:09:76 Connected: no
  Failed to pair: org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationCanceled

A quick google search for org.bluez.Error.AuthenticationCanceled
  reported nothing relevant.

Running btmon while trying to pair with the device gives me the
  following:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909417] Re: ubuntu server for raspberry pi 400 will not unpack to SD

2020-12-28 Thread Sophist
bugbot asked me to set a package. None of the options on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage really fit - linux is the
closest as "If you encounter the bug when booting the Live CD (or
alternative installer), file the bug against the kernel" was the closest
fit.

** Package changed: ubuntu => linux (Ubuntu)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1872401] Re: vmx_nm_test in ubuntu_kvm_unit_tests interrupted on X-oracle-4.15 / B-oracle-4.15 / X-KVM / B-KVM

2020-12-28 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
I can still see this issue with 4.15.0-1082.84 KVM with instance autovm2

The instance autovm2 will be in paused state.

Title:
  vmx_nm_test in ubuntu_kvm_unit_tests interrupted on X-oracle-4.15 /

Status in ubuntu-kernel-tests:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
When running kvm-unit-tests under a guest, it will be paused, requiring a
reset. When running the same test on a host (vmx_nm_test), it will fail.

  [Test case]
Grab kvm-unit-tests, build it and run:

  TESTNAME=vmx TIMEOUT=90s ACCEL= ./x86/run x86/vmx.flat -smp 1 -cpu
  host,+vmx -append "vmx_nm_test"

If done inside a guest, when the host runs the bionic 4.15 kernel, the guest
  will pause.

  [Potential regressions]
Nested KVM could stop working. Floating point could stop working on KVM
guests, though the code that relied on this was already removed from
  Bionic.

This issue was first spotted on Mar.16 [1]

The ubuntu_kvm_unit_tests will be interrupted on X-oracle-4.15 on both
VM.Standard2.1 and VM.Standard2.16, this is not a regression since it
can be reproduced with 4.15.0-1031-oracle #34~16.04.1:

  Running

Before the test started, this can be found in syslog:

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/admin-guide/hw-vuln/l1tf.html for
details.

After that, noting was printed and node disconnected.

It looks like this is a new test case added since the cycle of

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909450] Re: bluetooth failed to reconnect a previously paired device after airplane mode

2020-12-28 Thread You-Sheng Yang
This is being tested under Intel 9260, but it has being found on many
other chips that are compatible to BLE extended commands set (5.1). Not
sure if a legacy (5.0 or 4.x) bluetooth device is immune yet.

2020-12-28 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Not necessarily put bluetooth in a unresponsive state, but it does
sometimes fail to reply all USB URBs and become completely dead unless a
power cycle is executed.

Tested with the latest firmware from korg, commit 27a36893, REL17064.
Also reproducible on 5.9 mainline kernel.
