Title:
[Alienware 15 R4, Realtek ALC3266, Black Headphone Out or internal
speakers] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
With this latest update (Linux 5.4.0-58), the sound is now crackling.
Feels like DMA buffer underruns, but I'm not sure. Not seeing a
significant CPU load that might have aggravated it, nor am I seeing
any complaints in syslog or kern.log. Restarting pulseaudio and
running alsa force-reload had no effect.

These sound issues started with the same update that caused the
ath10k_pci driver to become extremely unreliable (filed as bug
  1908106).

  [Regression Potential]

  Patch 1 : [PATCH 1/3] Use vmcoreinfo note in /proc/kcore for --mem-usage
option
removes get_elf_loads function this function was only used with --mem-usage
option
, since kernel commit kernel commit 23c85094fe18 (kernel versions >4.19)
the information needed is in vmcoreinfo
Any regression potential would affect the --mem-usage only

  Patch 2 : [PATCH 2/3] arm64: Make use of NUMBER(VA_BITS) in vmcoreinfo
  arm64 only
make use of NUMBER(VA_BITS) in vmcoreinfo as the current way of guessing
VA_BITS
does not work on Linux 5.4 and later.
Before this commit VA_BITS would be calculated in get_versiondep_info_arm64,
however
this way of calculation breaks after 5.4. This commit gets the VA_BITS from
vmcoreinfo
and as a safeguard it uses the old way of deriving VA_BITS only if reading
from vmcoreinfo doesn't work.

From the kernel side VA_BITS is in vmcoreinfo since kernel 4.12, F and later
use later kernel so not
great regression potentional and if any it would only affect arm64.

Patch 3 : [PATCH 3/3] arm64: support flipped VA and 52-bit kernel VA
  arm64 only
Linux 5.4 and later kernels for arm64 changed the kernel VA space
arrangement and introduced 52-bit kernel VAs by merging branch
commit b333b0ba2346. Support 5.9+ kernels with vmcoreinfo entries
and 5.4+ kernels with best guessing.

This patch makes adjustemnt to properly calculate vabits_actual,
max_physmem_bits, page_offset
Any regression potential would affect only arm64 and the calculation of the
above variables.

  [Other]

For H only the 3 commits are needed and they cherry-pick.

For G and F the 3rd commit does not apply and an extra commit is
  needed :

  commit da0d25ffa585c9a1adb94562c815daa393b1ee5e

Bug description:
  Description:
In case the volume containing the root filesystem is encrypted using LUKS2
the memory used while unlocking the volume may exceed the size allocated to the
kdump kernel. This will lead to a failure while processing kdump and the dump
file will not be stored. Unfortunately, this condition may not be detected by a
client before a problem occurs.
The request is to have the kdump package installation script check for LUKS2
encryption (more precisely for Argon2i PBKDF, which is the root cause of the
high memory usage). If the condition is met, the installation procedure should
increase the crashkernel parameter to a higher value (>=512M)or issue a
warning, if the system memory is insufficient to reserve enough crashkernel
memory.

  Business Case:
Pervasive Encryption and Secure Execution require encryption of the
filesystems in order to keep customer data secure at all times. With the
increasing usage of these technologies, the number of kdump will rise too,
typically at inconvenient times, when the kdump is triggered due to a real
customer issue.
With the suggested change, the number of customer complaints and effort to
handle them will be reduced.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1917528] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source fails to build on Linux 5.10

2021-03-06 Thread Fritz Hudnut
Yep, this is "a problem" for me running Hirsute Lubuntu on both my mac
'09 MBP and just now tried to check it on my '12 cMP in Lu 21.04 and
tried to "add the driver" via Add'l drivers and it would not install the
driver . . . .

It's less of a problem on the desktop unit, because it is plugged in,
both appear to be using BCM4322 wifi units . . . but, this problem is a
"show-stopper" for for laptop . . . must have wifi capability in that
machine.

Wifi was working fine as of this recent Wed night, logged into Lu 21.04
.. . connected to wifi, saw that there was a large "794 package upgrade"
available, ran it through the wifi . . . but on reboot, wifi was "gone"
. . . . Fortunately at that location I could use ethernet, but
yesterday at my other part-time job, no such luck . . . no capacity for
wifi.

Today I messed around with it and found that as this post mentions
"bcmwl-kernel-source" package is "not friendly" with the kernel???

Please advise.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1915117] Re: [Regression] Audio card [8086:9d71] not detected after upgrade from linux 5.4 to 5.8

2021-03-06 Thread 尉晓亮
I have 8086:9d71 on a Xiaomi Redmi laptop and it dose cause some
sides. If you simply disable the SST driver and fallback to the legacy
hda driver, despite the various NID pin errors on different machines,
the digital microphone won't work at all. Maybe the only solution to
this is to 1)looking forward to sof firmware support, which is not much
possible since the hardware(8086:9d71) we're using is based on kbl, or
2) get the proper SST driver for this platform working, it's the only
firmware that supports both dmic and sound output.

Title:
[Regression] Audio card [8086:9d71] not detected after upgrade from
  linux 5.4 to 5.8

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Ubuntu version: 20.10 (updated from 20.04)
  Kernel: 5.8.0-41-generic #46-Ubuntu
  Manufacturer: Acer
  Product Name: Swift SF314-54
  BIOS Revision: 1.11

Audio card: Realtek High Definition Audio
Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD
Audio [8086:9d71] (rev 21)

  Summary
  ===

After upgrading from linux kernel 5.4 to 5.8, there is no more sound
card available. However, if I select kernel 5.4 in GRUB, the sound
  card is available.

  Steps to reproduce
  ==

  1. Install 20.04 or 20.10 with a kenel 5.4
  2. Check that sound output works as excepted (Settings > Sound > Output >
Test)
  3. Check that `alsa-info` command returns information
  4. Upgrade kernel to 5.8

  Expected results

  Sound output still works.

  Actual results
  ==

  2. Sound card is available, and sound can be output to the internal speakers.
  4. No more sound card detected (Sound Settings display "Dummy Output" in the
list of output devices).

closing laptop lid, or by calling pm-suspend explicitly) and it
appears not to matter whether I am using an external display or the
  laptop's own screen.

All other hardware appears to be working, and I can restart the laptop
by clicking where the icons ought to be. The only symptom seems to be
that the drawing does not happen correctly.

I'm not sure what additional information I should provide to help
diagnose the problem, so please advise me.

Also, if this is more likely to be a xfce issue, then please change
the package on the bug report.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2021-03-06 Thread Shatadru Banerjee
I want to politely point out that this thread is not helping anymore; it
has become mere chit-chat. Things were confusing to begin with and
unfortunately it is becoming more confusing. What is the fix? Does is
work with a particular kernel? The use of mainline kernel 5.11 should
solve all the problems? Is this nvidia gpu issue related to the solution
to the trackpad? Why can't the external monitor work, even with the AMD
iGPU? Most importantly, what one should do to have a working touchpad,
working nvida gpu and working external monitor? Please reply only if you
know what are you going to write.

  The latest kernel tree
  (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git)
has the complete solution to fix this bug. So we can expect kernel
v5.11 to fix this issue without any additional work.

Before the release of v5.11, you are suggested to use #189 to save your
touchpad. Note that for distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora, the pinctrl-amd
driver is built into the initramfs. So you have to rebuild the initramfs after
replacing the old module with new one.
On Fedora, run `sudo dracut --force`; On ubuntu, run `sudo update-initramfs
-u`.

The complete solution is three patches,
   - 47a0001436352c9853d72bf2071e85b316d688a2 ("pinctrl: amd: remove debounce
filter setting in IRQ type setting")
   - 06abe8291bc31839950f7d0362d9979edc88a666 ("pinctrl: amd: fix incorrect way
to disable debounce filter")
   - 8dcb7a15a585b6d0fee15751ce11d7a68cfedd56 ("gpiolib: acpi: Take into
account debounce settings")

The first two patches has reached the stable tree. If the last one is
also backported to LTS kernel, you won't need to install kernel 5.11.
But I don't know when this will happen.

  Hello

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at
all (pointer and click never move when touchpad is touched). This has been
reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.
Example of websites covering the issue :
  - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1253830/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad (exactly
the same laptop)
  - https://www.linux.org/threads/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad.29536/ (similar
laptop)

xinput indentifies it as MSFT0001:00 04F3:3140

Thanks a lot for your time. It does not help, but I can confirm what
was reported on askubuntu by another user : the touchpad does work on
  Windows.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1917885] Re: No longer able to install latest nvidia driver with ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

2021-03-06 Thread Doug Buxton
I was able to run the ubuntu-drivers install command without problems on
a liveusb (kubuntu 20.04, the same as my system). There seems to be
something wrong with my installation. I'm sorry for posting this as a
bug.

No longer able to install latest nvidia driver with ubuntu-drivers
  autoinstall

Status in linux-restricted-modules package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Following the latest update of nvidia-drivers-460, my second monitor
stopped working. I purged that package and attempted to reinstall
with ubuntu-drivers autoinstall. The following error occured:

  linux-modules-nvidia-460-generic : Depends: nvidia-kernel-common-460
(<= 460.39-1) but 460.56-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 is to be installed

I'm not sure why the dependency would say <= instead of >=. I suspect
this is part of why my 2nd monitor stopped working and I'm having
  trouble reinstalling the latest driver.
