[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-09-05 Thread nvrmndr
So this is still a problem with kernel 5.14 without a working
straightforward solution. This is becoming frustrating since this issue
is now 4 months old.

@TuxInvader: I tried your repository (ppa:tuxinvader/lts-mainline) with
5.14, but something went very wrong - after booting with this kernel, my
PC was basically unresponsive, it took like 2 minutes for the terminal
to open.

Title:
Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal
  20.04 LTS

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi all,

The Mainline wiki states that the mainline kernels are built with the
previous LTS toolchain, but the recent 5.12.x and 5.11.x releases are
being built with Hirsuite 21.04, and before that Groovy? If this is
intentional, then the wiki should be updated to reflect the change in
  policy.

  From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

Mainline kernel build toolchain
These kernels are built with the toolchain (gcc, g++, etc.) from the
previous Ubuntu LTS release.
(e.g. Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" / 16.04 "Xenial Xerus" / 18.04 "Bionic
Beaver", etc.) Therefore,
out-of-tree kernel modules you already have built and installed for use
with your release kernels
are not likely to work with the mainline builds.

The 5.12 kernel was built with GCC 10.3.0, and 5.11.16 with 10.2.0. On
my Focal LTS system I have GCC 9.3.0.

  The Mainline kernel build toolchain
These kernels are built with the toolchain (gcc, g++, etc.) from the previous
Ubuntu LTS release. (e.g. Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" / 16.04 "Xenial Xerus" /
18.04 "Bionic Beaver", etc.) Therefore, out-of-tree kernel modules you already
have built and installed for use with your release kernels are not likely to
work with the mainline builds.

The *linux-headers-generic* packages have unmet dependencies on 20.04
  LTS.

I could install Groovy built kernels fine, but the Hirsuite ones built
with GCC 10.3.0 appear to require libc6 >= 2.33. So the new kernels
can't be installed on Focal (libc 2.31).

  Thanks,
  Mark

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Hirsute:
  Fix Committed
Status in linux source package in Impish:

Bug description:
This patch is for soundwire audio, and only ubuntu 5.11-generic
and later kernels support soundwire audio driver, so this patch is not
sent to groovy and focal kernels.

For oem-5.10 and oem-5.13 kernels, since this bug is not from OEM
project, it is not urgent to merge this patch to OEM kenrels, after
the patch is in the hirsute and impish kernels, the oem kernels will
have this patch when syncing with generic kernels.

  [Impact]
On the Dell XPS 17 (9710) machine, the audio card is not detected when
booting hirsute or impish kernels. So the audio doesn't work on this
machine with ubuntu linux 21.04 or 21.10.

  [Fix]
Backport a upstream patch, this will set the correct codec config
for this machine: rt711 for headset, dual rt1308 for spks and rt715
  for internal mic.

  [Test]
Booting up with the patched kernel, the audio card is detected, test
internal speaker and internal mic, all work well, plug a headset,
the headphone and external mic work well too.

  [Where problems could occur]
This change only applis to the Dell machines with the
DMI_PRODUCT_SKU equals to "0A5D", if this could introduce the
regression, it will make the audio (speaker, internal mic and headset)
can't work anymore on the Dell machine with that PRODUCT_SKU, but this
possibility is very low, and we tested the patch on the machine, so
  far no regression is found.

No audio/mic from internal speakers/build in microphone running Ubuntu 20.04,
20.10 or 21.04 . Can connect via USB headset and audio will work. Tried
suggestions from Dell XPS 17 (9700) but this is the new model and fixes do not
work. Currently running 21.04 with proposed.

Have tried hirsute-proposed (5.11.0-24-generic) with no luck.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
The USB devices (keyboard, storage...) are failed to be detected when
connecting to the problematic root hubs which need longer PowerOn-to-PowerGood
delay than it claims in the hub descriptor. It's caused by the upstream fix
90d28fb53d4a ("usb: core: reduce power-on-good delay time of root hub").

  [Fix]
Reverting the upstream fix until a formal fix been placed.

  [Test Case]
  1. Plug the USB device to the ports of problematic root hub.
  2. Power on the machine.
  3. Check if the USB device can work or not after boot.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. The longer delay is proven safe in old kernels.

  == Original Bug Description ==

  [Summary]

The USB devices (keyboard, storage...) are failed to be detected during boot
after upgrade to UBUNTU focal kernel 5.4.0-78 and hirsute 5.11.0-26. However,
they will be detected and working ok after re-plugging. The kernel output shows
as down below during boot
  [ 39.350435] hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found
  [ 39.398835] hub 1-0:1.0: 12 ports detected
  [ 39.622744] usb usb1-port3: couldn't allocate usb_device

And when I plug out then plug in the same device, it shows
  [57210.794140] usb 1-3: new low-speed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd
  [57210.951289] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=17ef, idProduct=6099,
bcdDevice= 1.14
  [57210.951293] usb 1-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2,
SerialNumber=0

After doing kernel bisecting, we found the upstream commit
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/90d28fb53d4a51299ff324dede015d5cb11b88a2
makes the difference. It indicates that the delay for the root hub from
power_on to power_good is not long enough. There was no problem if the delay is
100 ms. From the Hub Descriptor of the root hub, the value is 10 * 2
milliseconds. And the XHCI spec also says in section 5.4.8
  """
The host is required to have power stable to the port within 20 milliseconds
of the '0' to '1' transition of PP. If PPC = '1', software is responsible for
waiting 20ms.
  """

The commit seems to follow the SPEC but could cause problems on some
  hubs.

  [Reproduce Steps]
  1. Plug the USB device to the physical port #1 and #4 which belongs to
high-speed hub.
  2. Power on the machine.
  3. Check if the USB device can work or not after boot.

  [Results]
  Expected:
All usb devices connect to the hub should work OK.

  Actual:
USB devices connects to high-speed hub can not be probed.

  [Additional Information]
Kernel Version: focal 5.4.0-78 and hirsute 5.11.0-26

HP ZBook 15 G6 display key (Fn+F1) autorepeats too fast to be usable

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Press the functional button for switching output to displays (joint,
mirror, bulit-in, external) 2. The dialog is invoked

  What is expected:
I should be able to select the desired option and confirm it

  What happened instead:
While the functional button for invoking the dialog is pressed, it iterates
extremely fast over the options. I cannot control it. After releasing the key,
the currently selected option is confirmed, which is effectively random.

Title:
HP ZBook 15 G6 display key (Fn+F1) autorepeats too fast to be usable

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Press the functional button for switching output to displays (joint,
mirror, bulit-in, external) 2. The dialog is invoked

  What is expected:
I should be able to select the desired option and confirm it

  What happened instead:
While the functional button for invoking the dialog is pressed, it iterates
extremely fast over the options. I cannot control it. After releasing the key,
the currently selected option is confirmed, which is effectively random.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1942684] Re: Kernel 5.14.0/1/5.13.14 fails to boot

2021-09-05 Thread Bluestang
Seems like it is one of these commits -
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm/tag/?h=drm-fixes-2021-08-27

I just looked at changelog for 5.13.14 and those 3 commits were also
added.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1942712] [NEW] trim script outputs error if no devices in pool support trim

2021-09-05 Thread Brett Frankenberger
Public bug reported:

/usr/lib/zfs-linux/trim, which is run on the first Sunday of every month
via an entry in /etc/cron.d/zfsutils-linux, outputs the following
message if a pool has no devices that support TRIM:

cannot trim: no devices in pool support trim operations

When this occurs via the crontab entry, the result is that cron sends an
E-Mail to root with the output. So systems which have ZFS configured on
a device that does not support TRIM (which includes not just legacy
HDD's, but also dm-crypt devices (by default) even if they have an SSD
lower layer) will get a nuisance E-Mail every month.

% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 21.04
Release:21.04

% apt-cache policy zfsutils-linux
zfsutils-linux:
  Installed: 2.0.2-1ubuntu5.1
  Candidate: 2.0.2-1ubuntu5.1
[ . . . ]

: What I expected to happen
The cronjob to silently complete without sending an error message (in the case
where the only issue is that the pool has no devices that support TRTM)

: What happened instead
The crontab caused an E-Mail with the above mentioned error message to be send
to root

(Note that there appears to be logic in the script to cause it to
continue past such pools. But that doesn't prevent the message from
being output and E-Mailed.)

** Affects: zfs-linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1906476] Re: PANIC at zfs_znode.c:335:zfs_znode_sa_init() // VERIFY(0 == sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db, zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, &zp->z_sa_hdl)) failed

2021-09-05 Thread Trent Lloyd
@Colin To be clear this is the same bug I originally hit and opened the
launchpad for, it just doesn't quite match with what most people saw in
the upstream bugs. But it seemed to get fixed anyway for a while, and
has regressed again somehow.

Same exception as from the original description and others reporting:
2021 May 16 21:19:09 laptop VERIFY(0 == sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db,
zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, &zp->z_sa_hdl)) failed

The upstream bug mostly reported slightly different errors though
similar symptoms (files get stuck and can't be accessed).

I also tried to use 'zdb' to check if incorrect file modes were saved,
unfortunately it seems zdb does not work for encrypted datasets, it only
dumps the unencrypted block info and doesn't dump info about filemodes
etc from the encrypted part. So I can't check that.

I've reverted back to 5.11.0-25 for now and it's stable again.

  In Progress

Bug description:
Since today while running Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute I started getting a ZFS
panic in the kernel log which was also hanging Disk I/O for all
  Chrome/Electron Apps.

I have narrowed down a few important notes:
  - It does not happen with module version 0.8.4-1ubuntu11 built and included
with 5.8.0-29-generic

  - It was happening when using zfs-dkms 0.8.4-1ubuntu16 built with DKMS
on the same kernel and also on 5.8.18-acso (a custom kernel).

  - For whatever reason multiple Chrome/Electron apps were affected,
specifically Discord, Chrome and Mattermost. In all cases they seem
(but I was unable to strace the processes so it was a bit hard ot
confirm 100% but by deduction from /proc/PID/fd and the hanging ls)
they seem hung trying to open files in their 'Cache' directory, e.g.
  ~/.cache/google-chrome/Default/Cache and ~/.config/Mattermost/Cache ..
while the issue was going on I could not list that directory either
  "ls" would just hang.

  - Once I removed zfs-dkms only to revert to the kernel built-in
version it immediately worked without changing anything, removing
  files, etc.

  - It happened over multiple reboots and kernels every time, all my
Chrome apps weren't working but for whatever reason nothing else
  seemed affected.

  - It would log a series of spl_panic dumps into kern.log that look like this:
  Dec  2 12:36:42 optane kernel: [   72.857033] VERIFY(0 ==
sa_handle_get_from_db(zfsvfs->z_os, db, zp, SA_HDL_SHARED, &zp->z_sa_hdl))
failed
  Dec 2 12:36:42 optane kernel: [ 72.857036] PANIC at
zfs_znode.c:335:zfs_znode_sa_init()

I could only find one other google reference to this issue, with 2 other
users reporting the same error but on 20.04 here:
  https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/issues/10971

  - I was not experiencing the issue on 0.8.4-1ubuntu14 and fairly sure
it was working on 0.8.4-1ubuntu15 but broken after upgrade to
0.8.4-1ubuntu16. I will reinstall those zfs-dkms versions to verify
  that.

There were a few originating call stacks but the first one I hit was

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-09-05 Thread k3dar7
@nvrmndr #76

steps in #57 still work for 5.14 ;-)

anyway i did make some changes in my private tool, so can be published and is
here:
https://github.com/k3dar/kumk

you can simply install 5.14 via: sudo kumk install 5.14

  Thanks,
  Mark

the GUI crashes at different times in different situations, no specific
application or package identified.

  3) What you expected to happen
Ubuntu working, applications like LibreOffice do their job.

  4) What happened instead
After some time of successful work (from seconds to hour) suddenly no input
by keyboard possible; OS crashes: GUI frozen, most times mouse movement frozen
(sometimes not), one time flickering GUI.
Sometimes remote ssh reboot possible. Sometimes not even successful ping to
the network interface possible.

No results: Tried to start "Ubuntu" w/o Wayland, same issue as "Ubuntu with

Bug description:
  [Impact]
The mic mute/audio mute LEDS are not work on HP ProBook 650 G8 Notebook PC

  [Fix]
It needs the specific quirk for the hardware layout.
Thus, add the quirks to make it works.

  [Test]
After applying the quirk, the audio/mic mute LEDs are working good.

  [Where problems could occur]
If HP ships the different system boards design with the same subsystem ID of
audio codec which is using different GPIO pins (different layout), then the
quirk will not work (LEDs will not work when muting audio-output or microphone).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1939635] Re: No WiFi after 5.11.0-25-generic update

2021-09-05 Thread MikeR
Steps to solution:

1. Plug in USB Wifi device
2. lsusb
3. check for line similar to:
Bus 001 Device 057: ID 0bda:f179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp
4. using your favorite search engine, look for: "0bda:f179" (or whatever ID you
see in the above line.
Hopefully this will point you to a downloadable / installable driver (worked
for me)

  1. No WiFi connection
  2. various (e.g. firefox, wavemon) do not start, terminal locks and the only

This latest 5.8 update has caused a lot of issues for a lot of people. The
most critical being breaking:

  Graphics Drivers
Virtualbox no longer working. You can fix this by downloading straight
from virtualbox.org but then that breaks Python.
  WIFI Stops working

not something that should happen to a LTS version!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1942738] Re: XOrg / nouveau - hard lockups and does not draw to screen

2021-09-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

You seem to be using the old (not recommended) Xorg graphics drivers
called 'nouveau' and 'radeon'. They have been replaced by the newer
driver 'modesetting'. So if you are writing a Xorg config file be sure
to use the latter.

Please also note the nouveau kernel driver is often unreliable.
Unfortunately your Nvidia GPU appears to be a little too old to be
supported by the official proprietary Nvidia drivers so you don't have
much choice. If you can disable the Nvidia GPU in your BIOS and use the
Radeon instead then you might have more luck.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1942738] Re: XOrg / nouveau - hard lockups and does not draw to screen

2021-09-05 Thread JXT
This machine is a frankenstien to help debug the issues with my main
workstation. I need to upgrade but dual GPU is horribly broken on across
all flavors and even non-Ubuntu/Debian distros.

I was explicitly testing how the system functions with no xorg.conf
between 2 separate GPU's. Yes the nVidia GPU is ancient and too old for
the proprietary drivers. Again just what I had on hand to simulate dual
GPU's for testing so I don't have to butcher my workstation while I
test. However despite the age of the nVidia GPU this nouveau issue
persists on newer cards as well.

Workstation has two "modern" GTX 1XXX series cards but the problems are
the same. Compositors don't draw at all or incorrectly to anything on
another XScreen or GPU which brings me to your disable the old GPU
comment. The point is to use the hardware, not lose it. I've found a ton
of problems in things moving forward and am looking for a solution
rather than "Hey just throw one GPU and all it's screens in the trash
because somethings broken in software." Ultimately this issue affects
modern dual GPU systems as well as matched brand cards. Things work in
18.04, everything breaks moving to 20.04/21.04.

Title:
XOrg / nouveau - hard lockups and does not draw to screen

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in xserver-xorg-video-ati package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Changing display settings hard locks the machine (no reisub save).
Installing nouveau-firmware allows changes to be made without hard
lock ups but the screen using nouveau draws the mouse cursor and will
launch apps on it but does not draw anything on screen. Dmesg is
flooded with nouveau and XOrg failure messages.
