[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1945938] Re: [impish] Remove the downstream xr-usb-uart driver
** Description changed: [Impact] The xr-usb-serial custom (downstream vendor) driver was added in Xenial LTS kernel to add support for USB UART chips: Family: USB UART Part Numbers: XR21V1410, XR21V1412, XR21V1414, XR21B1411, XR21B1420, XR21B1422, XR21B1424, XR22801, XR22802, XR22804 [Fix] In 5.13.x, support for these devices was added to the kernel via. following patch series: Link: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20210412095557.1213-1-jo...@kernel.org/ There have been long term maintenance challenges with the downstream vendor driver over the period of time (since 4.4.y based Xenial LTS). Now that upstream driver supports most of the above part numbers, let's remove this redundant out-of-tree driver. [Test] The driver was functionally verified to work fine with XR21V1412. The support for other chips with part numbers mentioned above are also supported with the above patch series. [Where problems could occur] The downstream driver was designed to work with specific BIOS configs only defined on an IoT GW project which is locked to use only Xenial ESM and Bionic LTS kernels, there is a low chance of regression on the Impish series. + + [This is a tracking bug, please do not triage] -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1945938 Title: [impish] Remove the downstream xr-usb-uart driver Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux source package in Impish: Confirmed Bug description: [Impact] The xr-usb-serial custom (downstream vendor) driver was added in Xenial LTS kernel to add support for USB UART chips: Family: USB UART Part Numbers: XR21V1410, XR21V1412, XR21V1414, XR21B1411, XR21B1420, XR21B1422, XR21B1424, XR22801, XR22802, XR22804 [Fix] In 5.13.x, support for these devices was added to the kernel via. following patch series: Link: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20210412095557.1213-1-jo...@kernel.org/ There have been long term maintenance challenges with the downstream vendor driver over the period of time (since 4.4.y based Xenial LTS). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1945895] Re: screen flickring after installing cpufreq
Flickering and a lack of smoothness are two different issues. The lack of smoothness would just be due to your GPU staying at a lower frequency more often, so it's not a bug but something you would need to tune yourself. As for the flickering, please edit /etc/default/grub and change: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.enable_psr=0" and then run: sudo update-grub and reboot. If the problem still happens after that then while it is happening, please run: journalctl -b0 > journal.txt and attach the resulting text file here along with a video of the flickering problem. ** Summary changed: - screen flickring after installing cpufreq + [HP EliteBook 820 G2] screen flickring after installing cpufreq ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => linux-hwe-5.11 (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux-hwe-5.11 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-hwe-5.11 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1945895 Title: [HP EliteBook 820 G2] screen flickring after installing cpufreq Status in linux-hwe-5.11 package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: after installing cpufreq the screen flickring and smoothness disappeared in ubuntu . [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1945927] [NEW] Terrible resolution on integrated webcam on Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition 9310
Public bug reported: This seems to be a known issue, but I couldn't find any launchpad bug corresponding to it. Apologies if I missed it, or if there is a better place for reporting a bug like this. When I try to use the webcam on my newly purchased Dell XPS-13-9310 Developer Edition, using Cheese (or any other app) on Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (fossa-bulbasaur X55), as it came out of the box, I only get a very pixelated low quality 640x480 resolution instead of the hardware's 1280×720 capability as advertised here: https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and- notebooks/xps-13-developer-edition/spd/xps-13-9310-laptop From what I gather, no linux driver exist that can use the full resolution of this webcam. I hope that it is somehow possible to get a proper driver from Dell / Realtek. If not, I hope that Realtek can provide documentation for the interface so that a proper driver can be written. I'm tempted to try to make that my first contribution of a driver, but in all likelihood I won't have the time or motivation to learn all that's needed and actually write it. Until a driver is available, I would appreciate if Dell would clarify on their website that their 9310 Developer Edition can only use the full advertised resolution in Windows. (I would not have bought this laptop if I had known about this limitation, as I frequently use Google Meet / Zoom and the current quality is not acceptable to me). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1821564] Re: b44 Ethernet driver null pointer during initialization
In Ubuntu 21.10 with 5.13.0-16-generic kernel, I don't get any dmesg errors after I "modprobe b44" and Ethernet works initially at reasonable speed, but the whole system freezes totally after a few minutes. I suppose this means the b44 driver still doesn't work properly, because I don't get such freezes when using WiFi. Though I don't know for sure, because I don't have any error messages. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1821564 Title: b44 Ethernet driver null pointer during initialization Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: This problem started after upgrading to Ubuntu 19.04. It was not present with 4.18.0-16-generic kernel and is present in the 4.18.0-15-generic kernel. Ever time during boot there is a null pointer dereference in the b44 driver for the on-board Ethernet on this Dell Inspiron 6400. After that I can log in but networking related commands hang and the computer eventually locks up. Blacklisting the b44 module so it doesn't load works as a workaround, though of course the on board Ethernet can't be used that way. The b43 WiFi still works then. The following is pasted from the log of one crash: 6.483003] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 6.483052] #PF error: [normal kernel read fault] 6.483093] PGD 0 P4D 0 6.483133] Oops: [#1] SMP PTI 6.483175] CPU: 0 PID: 725 Comm: NetworkManager Tainted: GW 5.0.0-7-generic #8-Ubuntu 6.483217] Hardware name: Dell Inc. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1944389] Re: Thermald 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.6 keeps Tigerlake GPU frequency on 400 MHz
Checked with kernel 5.13.0-1014-oem (5.11.0-37-generic is not usable for this laptop as wifi and external display are not recognized) Both # echo idle > workload_type or # echo bursty > workload_type are not helpful. Also balance_power is in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/policy$i/energy_performance_preference for every CPU by default. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to thermald in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1944389 Title: Thermald 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.6 keeps Tigerlake GPU frequency on 400 MHz Status in thermald package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: After update to 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.6 from 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.4 thermald keeps Tigerlake Iris Xe GPU frequency on 400 MHz after reaching some high temperature value. It became impossible to play video games on the laptop. System: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Kernel: 5.10.0-1045-oem Laptop: Dell XPS 9310, CPU: Intel Core i7-1165G7 (Tigerlake), Integrated GPU Iris Xe. BIOS 2.1.1 03/25/2021 Display: 2560x1440 144Hz HDMI USB-C connection Room temperature is 23.5-25.4 degrees Game: Stalker Clear Sky (Wine/Proton Steam) Note: The game itself is very old and loads 100% of one CPU core disregarding of frequency. GPU frequency is monitored by intel-gpu-top GPU frequencies (according to /sys/class/drm/card0/) min/max/boost/efficiency: 100/1300/1300/400 Previous behavior (1.9.1-1ubuntu0.4) After starting the game at first GPU reaches the boost value of 1300 MHz and CPU/package temperatures continuously increase. At this point game renders at ~80FPS. After some time when threshold temperature value (~78 degrees) is reached the GPU frequency decreases to ~660 MHz and FPS to 40-48 FPS. Package temperature decreases to 66-68 degrees. It's possible to play for indefinite amount of time. New behavior (1.9.1-1ubuntu0.4) After starting the game at first GPU reaches the boost value of 1300 MHz and CPU/package temperatures continuously increase. At this point game renders at ~80FPS. But after reaching the threshold temperature (about 81 degrees) GPU frequency decreases to 400 MHz (gt_RP1_freq_mhz -- "efficiency" temperature for the GPU) and stays on this value for the indefinite amount of time. The temperature is maintained on 70-74 degrees. FPS is about 25-30 FPS, it is not possible to play the game anymore. The only way to return the good FPS and frequency is to fold the game window, wait some time and open it again. Also there is a workaround -- limit the CPU frequency to 2001 MHz and disable Intel turbo boost. With such approach package temperature never reaches 80 degrees and it is possible to play game with 500 MHz and 35-40 FPS. Better than nothing. If it is needed I can perform any additional checks, provide CPU frequencies and so on. Most probably regression happened with 1.9.1-1ubuntu0.5, but I tried only versions 0.4 and 0.6 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thermald/+bug/1944389/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS
Hmm. Got 5.14.9 running directly from the https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ repository. Works with nvidia driver 4.70 on Mint 20.2 :) build sequence: - checkout cod/mainline/v5.14.9 from git://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack - install libfuse-dev (shown in the selftest fail log, so I guessed it can't hurt) - time sudo debian/rules clean - time sudo dpkg-buildpackage -d -nc --no-sign -j33 - sudo chown -R : .. Prerequisites is having built dwarves, libbpf, and probably zstd like mentioned in #71. Package runs successfully on several machines. One oddity I've seen: running the build again will fail. You need to git clean -df multiple times, and do a git reset --hard . But pretty straight forward anyway. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1926938 Title: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi all, The Mainline wiki states that the mainline kernels are built with the previous LTS toolchain, but the recent 5.12.x and 5.11.x releases are being built with Hirsuite 21.04, and before that Groovy? If this is intentional, then the wiki should be updated to reflect the change in policy. From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds Mainline kernel build toolchain These kernels are built with the toolchain (gcc, g++, etc.) from the previous Ubuntu LTS release. (e.g. Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" / 16.04 "Xenial Xerus" / 18.04 "Bionic Beaver", etc.) Therefore, out-of-tree kernel modules you already have built and installed for use with your release kernels are not likely to work with the mainline builds. The 5.12 kernel was built with GCC 10.3.0, and 5.11.16 with 10.2.0. On my Focal LTS system I have GCC 9.3.0. The Mainline kernel build toolchain These kernels are built with the toolchain (gcc, g++, etc.) from the previous Ubuntu LTS release. The *linux-headers-generic* packages have unmet dependencies on 20.04 LTS. I could install Groovy built kernels fine, but the Hirsuite ones built with GCC 10.3.0 appear to require libc6 >= 2.33. So the new kernels can't be installed on Focal (libc 2.31). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1945309] Re: Screen flickering on Ubuntu 20.04 - HP Spectre X360 with Intel Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520]
Alright I will be waiting for that, thank you! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-hwe-5.11 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1945309 Title: Screen flickering on Ubuntu 20.04 - HP Spectre X360 with Intel Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520] Status in linux-hwe-5.11 package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am using Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS on my HP Spectre X360 with Intel Skylake GT2 [HD Graphics 520] and I am having flickering graphics. The problem sometimes happens showing grey flickering boxes 5-6 times in a minute, and sometimes it does not happen for 2-3 minutes. Overall, it annoys me quite a lot. I have tried decreasing the refresh rate from 60Hz to lower options, but that didn't work. Updating the drivers or purging Intel graphics didn't work either. I also tried a couple of stuff I saw online regarding /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. I do not have this issue on Windows, therefore it must be Ubuntu- related. When I set nomodeset on GRUB and update it, flickering disappears, but at the cost of my brightness adjuster and Night Light. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1846374] Re: Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates gigabytes of error logs
I can confirm this also happens on elementary OS 6 with nvidia-driver-470. I tried to add a limit to /etc/systemd/journald.conf, but it didn't help at all. Finally I managed to limit the log size using this tutorial: https://askubuntu.com/questions/184949/how-do-i-limit-the-size-of-my-syslog I still have problems with hight CPU & SSD usage caused by the logging, but at least it doesn't fill my disk entirely. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-418 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1846374 Title: Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates gigabytes of error logs Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-418 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-435 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-440 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-460 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: To replicate: 1. Start a video playing, for example in vlc. 'avcodec decoder: Using NVIDIA VDPAU Driver Shared Library 418.56 Fri Mar 15 12:31:51 CDT 2019 for hardware decoding' 2. Optionally pause it. 3. Switch to another user. The original user's ~/.xsession-errors will rapidly fill up with errors along the lines of "vdpau_chroma filter error". At the same time, errors are put in /var/log/syslog as well: [7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer features failure: An invalid handle value was provided. [7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer attributes failure: An invalid handle value was provided. [7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer rendering failure: An invalid handle value was provided. (repeat ad nauseum) At least one of the two will rapidly fill up its partition and problems will arise. With AMD video hardware and driver, the video continues playing - you can hear the sound despite being in the other user. First observed on latest Mint (20.2)... then discovered Peppermint 10 was not affected. I believe Peppermint 10 is based on 18.04 and I am unsure why it is not affected. I tested with many versions of Ubuntu... Before 17.04... no problem... but was using EXA acceleration. 17.04 first to use Glamor... screen corruption is not obvious... but dmesg show GPU lockup... 17.10 and following is really problematic after resume, but possible to Ctrl-Alt-F4 to go to a text console and ... sudo reboot. There is a possibility I missed the exact version as I don't have my notes near me. Adding Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" at the good place in xorg.conf file have fixed the issue. I am unlikely to have access again to that specific computer in the future. --- ProblemType: Bug ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu69 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: ubuntu 6610 F pulseaudio CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CasperVersion: 1.465 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 21.10 IwConfig: lono wireless extensions. enp63s0 no wireless extensions. However, no sound card can be detected w/o the topology binary file in /lib/firmware and corresponding ucm file. [Fix] The kernel config CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SKYLAKE_HDAUDIO_CODEC needa to be enabled for the snd_soc_skl driver to support HDA+DMIC configuration. And the topology binary file and UCM files need to be located in the correct path based on Intel's suggestion. https://gist.github.com/crojewsk/4e6382bfb0dbfaaf60513174211f29cb. [Test] On the Skylake/Kabylake platforms with either the PCI device 8086:9d70 and 8086:9d71, boot up the machine and check the existence of the sound card by either 'aplay -l' or 'pactl list' command. [Where problems could occur] Should be low risk, it only affects limited Intel Platforms with particular PCI device IDs + HDA plus DMIC configuration. == Original Bug Description == Ubuntu version: 20.10 (updated from 20.04) Kernel: 5.8.0-41-generic #46-Ubuntu Manufacturer: Acer Product Name: Swift SF314-54 BIOS Revision: 1.11 Audio card: Realtek High Definition Audio Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio [8086:9d71] (rev 21) Summary === After upgrading from linux kernel 5.4 to 5.8, there is no more sound card available. However, if I select kernel 5.4 in GRUB, the sound card is available. Steps to reproduce == 1. Install 20.04 or 20.10 with a kenel 5.4 2. Check that sound output works as excepted (Settings > Sound > Output > Test) 3. Check that `alsa-info` command returns information 4. Upgrade kernel to 5.8 Expected results Sound output still works. Actual results == 2. Sound card is available, and sound can be output to the internal speakers. 4. No more sound card detected (Sound Settings display "Dummy Output" in the list of output devices).
