Bug description:
I've bought ThinkPad T14s with a USB-based docking station. Everything
is working marvelously, but after suspend the ethernet port on the
docking station won't connect. I've discovered the following messages
  in my dmesg:

  [ 9511.552448] r8152 4-1.1:1.0 enxf4a80d264083: Tx status -71
  [ 9511.972661] r8152 4-1.1:1.0 enxf4a80d264083: Tx status -71

  [ 9513.317020] r8152 4-1.1:1.0 enxf4a80d264083: Tx status -71

  See See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1922651
for a simular problem with an other version of the ethernet device.

I am testing the following possible workaround found in the bug report
1922651 although it did not completely seem to solve the issue
  mentioned in that bug report:

  Quirk: etc/default/grub
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash usbcore.quirks=0bda:8153:k"

The first suspend the ethernet port in the docking station connected
after resuming from suspend. I will update this bug report if the
  issue returns later on.

  [Where problems could occur]
The 2 patches look pretty safe to me, they try to preserve the ASPM state of
devices.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1955383] Re: Support Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Alder Lake platforms

2022-07-23 Thread Kai-Chuan Hsieh
@hobble

When you install 22.04 stock Ubuntu please enable the oem meta in
software-properties-gtk > additional drivers, then do the full dist-
upgrade by $ sudo apt dist-upgrade. Please also make sure the BIOS is
the latest,https://www.dell.com/support/home/zh-tw/product-
support/product/xps-13-9320-laptop/drivers. You can upgrade the BIOS by
exe file or run $ sudo fwupdmgr update. If it is still black in
webcamtest, please attach kernel log and $ apt list --installed or $
dpkg-query -W, so that I can check it for you.

Bug description:
  == kernel driver SRU ==

  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]

To support Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Alder Lake platforms.

  [Fix]

Initial support for Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Tiger Lake platforms has
been addressed by bug 1921345 and 1939539. They are backported from
  https://github.com/intel/ipu6-drivers.

Further works to enable IPU6 camera on Alder Lake platforms depend on a
few more fixes from same ipu6-drivers repository, as well as an extra
  https://github.com/intel/ivsc-driver for Intel Vision Sensing
  Controller(IVSC).

  [Test Case]

This depends on an integral of enablement components inclusive of the
kernel drivers that are being proposed, firmware, updates for the
userspace camera hardware abstration layer library and a gstreamer
element as what we have for Tiger Lake platforms.

  [Where problems could occur]

It's confirmed Intel IPU6 MIPI camera doesn't support suspend at
  streaming.

  [Other Info]

Jammy is planned, but yet the support for 5.15 kernel is not yet started
  from Intel side.

  == linux-firmware SRU ==

  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]

Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Alder Lake platform takes a different fw
  blob.

  [Fix]

While Intel has no intention to upstream IPU6 driver before kernel
camera is out, it's available in
  https://github.com/intel/ipu6-camera-bins commit e60fae2b5128 from its
  main branch.

  [Test Case]

This would take both kernel and firmware fixes, as well as updates for
the userspace middleware, gstreamer element plugin, to enable the device.
With all of them in position, one should be able to browse camera with
  legacy camera apps like cheese.

  [Where problems could occur]

It's confirmed Intel IPU6 MIPI camera doesn't support suspend at
  streaming.

  == original bug report ==

  This depends on following componenets:
  * ipu6ep firmware in
https://github.com/intel/ipu6-camera-bins/commit/e60fae2b5128cf5b8b948b234dab28e58c93877d
  * Intel VSC fw version 1.2.3.439 (not yet available publicly)

Incredible, thank you for the fast response, Dave! Installing the linux-
modules-extra-raspi package did indeed allow me to modprobe usbmon, and
the Wireless AP to be recognized by `iw list`.

MT7612u wireless chipset not working on Raspberry Pi 400

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I purchased the Alfa AWUS036ACM wireless adapter to use with my
Raspberry Pi 400. The adapter works when using Raspberry Pi OS, but
not when using "Ubuntu for Raspberry Pi" release 22.04. I have tested
64-bit variants for Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server, and the results
are the same. I followed the Kernel Firmware Debugging steps, and
included its output below. The LinuxWireless Debugging steps seem to
only be appropriate if the wireless adapter is working to some
capacity so the below output does not include those steps. I also
attempted to follow the Kernel USB Debugging steps, but the commands
do not seem appropriate for the Raspberry Pi 400. For example,
`/proc/bus/usb` and `/sys/kernel/debug/usb/usbmon/` do not exist on
  the filesystem.

As part of troubleshooting, I updated the bootloader for the Raspberry
Pi 400 to version 507b2360 which was built on 2022-04-26. I also ran
`sudo apt update` and `sudo apt full-upgrade`. Neither of these
  troubleshooting steps resolved the problem.

On a separate note, I have another Ubuntu Server release 22.04 that is
installed on dedicated hardware (not the "Ubuntu for Raspberry Pi"
variant), and the wireless adapter does work on this machine.

   Raspberry Pi 400 Output

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1955383] Re: Support Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Alder Lake platforms

2022-07-23 Thread Edward Wong
I just got a new XPS 13 plus 9320 and it came with Windows 11. I
replaced it with Ubuntu 22.04, but the Webcam wasn't working so I
replaced that with Ubuntu 20.04, but the webcam still doesn't seem to be
working. I tried:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oem-solutions-group/intel-ipu6
$ sudo apt install libcamhal-ipu6ep0

And now Firefox can detect it but https://webcamtests.com/ and Cheese
just show a black screen. I'm pretty sure the hardware is fine since I
tested it when it still had Windows 11 and it was running fine. I'm also
fairly new to Linux so I feel like I just didn't install something, but
anyone know what could be up with this?

Bug description:
  == kernel driver SRU ==

  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]

To support Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Alder Lake platforms.

  [Fix]

Initial support for Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Tiger Lake platforms has
been addressed by bug 1921345 and 1939539. They are backported from
  https://github.com/intel/ipu6-drivers.

Further works to enable IPU6 camera on Alder Lake platforms depend on a
few more fixes from same ipu6-drivers repository, as well as an extra
  https://github.com/intel/ivsc-driver for Intel Vision Sensing
  Controller(IVSC).

  [Test Case]

This depends on an integral of enablement components inclusive of the
kernel drivers that are being proposed, firmware, updates for the
userspace camera hardware abstration layer library and a gstreamer
element as what we have for Tiger Lake platforms.

  [Where problems could occur]

It's confirmed Intel IPU6 MIPI camera doesn't support suspend at
  streaming.

  [Other Info]

Jammy is planned, but yet the support for 5.15 kernel is not yet started
  from Intel side.

  == linux-firmware SRU ==

  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]

Intel IPU6 MIPI camera on Alder Lake platform takes a different fw
  blob.

  [Fix]

While Intel has no intention to upstream IPU6 driver before kernel
camera is out, it's available in
  https://github.com/intel/ipu6-camera-bins commit e60fae2b5128 from its
  main branch.

  [Test Case]

This would take both kernel and firmware fixes, as well as updates for
the userspace middleware, gstreamer element plugin, to enable the device.
With all of them in position, one should be able to browse camera with
  legacy camera apps like cheese.

  [Where problems could occur]

It's confirmed Intel IPU6 MIPI camera doesn't support suspend at
  streaming.

  == original bug report ==

  This depends on following componenets:
  * ipu6ep firmware in
https://github.com/intel/ipu6-camera-bins/commit/e60fae2b5128cf5b8b948b234dab28e58c93877d
  * Intel VSC fw version 1.2.3.439 (not yet available publicly)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT

2022-07-23 Thread Alessandro Fadini
Thank you Sergey,
I really appreciate the help and I will create a separate issue.

In regards to sniffing the verbs with QEMU, I finally managed to install
Win 11 and launch it with QEMU (after using virt-manager to help with
TPM issues). The problem is that even if I install asus driver on the
emulated win 11 machine, the soundcard is not found (the speaker icon in
windows shows an X). I am trying to trouble shoot it, while making sure
that I pass through the IOMMU group in the correct way. Where would I
find support for those specific issues?

I have been following this guide:
https://github.com/ryanprescott/realtek-verb-tools/wiki/How-to-sniff-verbs-from-a-Windows-sound-driver

But that repo seems abandoned.

Thank you again.

Spinner vanishes from screen during 22.04 boot from USB

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I burnt Ubuntu 22.04 to USB and used it to boot a stock Dell XPS 15 laptop.
It started the boot OK, showed the splash screen with the spinner rotating.
After about two minutes the spinner disappears for 55 secs, then reappears,
and the disappears again. The system continues to boot successfully from USB.

The problem is that it is VERY unnerving for a new or potential user when the
only sign of life vanishes without trace or warning. I have watched new users
get up and walk away permanently from systems that do this because to then it
means it has hung, and won't be coming back. Is it possible to nice(1) the
background processes to the point where they do not usurp all cycles from the
spinner? A blind process (like a splash screen) should NEVER stop
communicating
to the users that it is still alive and kicking.

Title:
Spinner vanishes from screen during 22.04 boot from USB

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982621] RfKill.txt

Title:
Spinner vanishes from screen during 22.04 boot from USB

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Is it possible to nice(1) the
background processes to the point where they do not usurp all cycles from the
spinner? A blind process (like a splash screen) should NEVER stop
communicating
to the users that it is still alive and kicking.

spinner? A blind process (like a splash screen) should NEVER stop
communicating

I see this on every boot up but all it seems to do is slow down the boot
process.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982479] Re: Latest kernel breaks LCD screen

2022-07-23 Thread Hadmut Danisch
OK, I got further.

The distortion depends on the presence of the
linux-modules-extra-5.15.0-*-generic package. I first did omit these extra
modules and found a completely different behaviour without.

With linux-modules-extra-5.15.0-*-generic:

Kernels up to including 5.15.0-39-generic are fine. The bug came in with
5.15.0-40-generic

Without linux-modules-extra-5.15.0-*-generic:

System can't active ethernet and sddm hangs for unknown reasons when
booting normally. But when booting into maintenance mode in grub, and
just activating the "networking" (although it can't activate ethernet
without the module), the system then comes up into a stable and normal
X11 session, just the mouse pad not working (missing module) even with
the 5.15.0-40-generic kernel!

So it must be
- something that came in with the -40 version
- probably something that is in the linux-modules-extra package and not the
linux-image or the linux-modules package.

Title:
  Latest kernel breaks LCD screen

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi,

I just installed Lubuntu 22.04 on a brandnew notebook, and everything
was working well until rebooting after update:

Both the boot splash and the X11 screens are jumping and appear
instable afer a few seconds, as out of sync and running through. It
absolutely looks like a hardware problem like a broken LCD connector
cable, but it isn't: booting fresh from the Lubuntu usb stick and
evernything works. I have a second machine, exactly same model and
installation procedure, which was working well for some weeks and had
exactly the same problem after upgrading.

disabling the boot splash did not help.

But booting into the older vmlinuz-5.15.0-25-generic , that came with
the Lubuntu installation iso file, instead of the latest
vmlinuz-5.15.0-41-generic solved the problem. With the older kernel,
  everything is stable and fine.

So between the 25 and the 41 revision of the kernel there came
something in which reliably breaks the screen configuration on both my
  two notebooks of identical hardware.

Both the X11 login screen and the desktop do work normally for about
five seconds and then start running through like one of these old days
analog screens when out of sync or a cable not plugged in correctly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982479] Re: Latest kernel breaks LCD screen

2022-07-23 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Boot with versions betwenn 25 and 41 is not hanging, it is the sddm (and
thus X11) that is not running for yet unknown reasons, and thus the
NetworkManager is not getting active.

What did you change betwenn 25 and 33 and between 40 and 41?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982479] Re: Latest kernel breaks LCD screen

2022-07-23 Thread Hadmut Danisch
5.15.0-25 good
5.15.0-41 bad

and all available versions between hanging at boot time, not enabling
the network.

Last message on console for these versions is

[ OK ] Finished Record Runlevel Change in UTMP.

no visible error message, but I can login on console 1. I need to figure
out why these versions are hanging.

OK, got it. I wasn't aware that the older versions are still in the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982627] Re: MT7612u wireless chipset not working on Raspberry Pi 400

2022-07-23 Thread Dave Jones
Looks like this is one of the ones moved to the modules-extra package
(this split is kernel specific, and wasn't done on the PC kernel which
probably explains why this adapter works on your PC installation of
Ubuntu Server). If you do the following:

  $ sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-raspi

You should then be able to modprobe usbmon. I'll move the bug over to
linux-raspi as it's technically a kernel issue.

** Also affects: linux-raspi (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: linux-firmware (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

MT7612u wireless chipset not working on Raspberry Pi 400

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux-raspi package in Ubuntu:

  $ sudo modprobe usbmon

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982479] Re: Latest kernel breaks LCD screen

2022-07-23 Thread Hadmut Danisch
I'm still looking for a method to test different build versions of
kernels.

I tried that mainline tool described here
https://davejansen.com/install-a-linux-kernel-of-choice-under-ubuntu/

but that offers only different Linux versions (i.e. those who differ in
the first three numbers like 5.15.0 and 5.15.1, but not in the ubuntu
build number such as 5.15.0-25 and 5.15.0-41.

I am willing to do debugging for you, but you need to hint me about how to get
these versions.

Spinner vanishes from screen during 22.04 boot from USB

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1982621] Re: Spinner vanishes from screen during 22.04 boot from USB

2022-07-23 Thread Peter Flynn
The bug seems to be in the Live USB installer, for which your page at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage says to use "linux" as the
package name.

** Package changed: ubuntu => linux (Ubuntu)

Title:
Spinner vanishes from screen during 22.04 boot from USB

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  SRU Justification:

  [IMPACT]

This is being reported by a hardware partner as it is being noticed a
lot both in their internal testing teams and also being reported with
some frequency by customers who are seeing these messages in their
logs and thus it is generating an unusualy high volume of support
  calls from the field.

In 5.4, commit d60cd06331a3566d3305b3c7b566e79edf4e2095 was introduced
upstream and pulled into Ubuntu between 5.4.0-58.64 and 5.4.0-59.65.
Upstream, these errors were discovered and that patch was reverted
(see Fix Below). We carry the revert commit in all subsequent Focal
HWE kernels starting at 5.12, but the fix was never pulled back into
  Focal 5.4.

  according to the hardware partner:

the following error messages are observed when rebooting a machine
that uses the BCM5720 chipset, which is a widely used 1GbE controller
found on LOMs and OCP NICs as well as many PCIe NIC models.

The hardware partner did some bisection and observed the following:

  Kernel version Fatal Error
  5.4.0-42.46 No
  5.4.0-45.49 No
  5.4.0-47.51 No

  5.4.0-58.64 No
  5.4.0-59.65 yes
  5.4.0-60.67 yes

  [FIX]
The fix is to apply this patch from upstream:

  commit 9d3fcb28f9b9750b474811a2964ce022df56336e
  Author: Josef Bacik
  Date: Tue Mar 16 22:17:48 2021 -0400

Revert "PM: ACPI: reboot: Use S5 for reboot"

  This reverts commit d60cd06331a3566d3305b3c7b566e79edf4e2095.

This patch causes a panic when rebooting my Dell Poweredge r440. I do
not have the full panic log as it's lost at that stage of the reboot and
I do not have a serial console. Reverting this patch makes my system
  able to reboot again.

  Example:

https://code.launchpad.net/~bladernr/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/focal/+ref/1917471

The hardware partner has preemptively pulled our 5.4 tree, applied the
fix and tested it in their labs and determined that this does resolve
  the issue.

  [TEST CASE]
Install the patched kernel on a machine that uses a BCM5720 LOM and reboot
the machine and see that the errors no longer appear.
