[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1991027] Re: rcu_preempt detected expedited stalls on CPUs/tasks

2022-10-08 Thread Boris Gjenero
I see lots of these errors on my Dell Inspiron 6400 when booting. They
started after upgrading to Ubuntu 20.10. Everything still seems to work.

Bug description:
  This is upstream tracking bug:
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216158

The bug originates from an upstream bug, and the ubuntu users request
me to do a SRU to make the ubuntu linux work on their Asus laptops, so
once the pathces are merge to mainline kernel, I start to prepare this
  SRU.

  [Impact]
Some Asus laptops config the IRQ of keyboard in the BIOS, but kernel
will override to a new configuration for that IRQ, this will make the
keyboard not work anymore under linux.

  [Fix]
Backport 2 patches from mainlie kernel to fix this problem.

  [Test]
boot the patched kernel on the machine, test the keyboard, all
  regular keys could work.

  [Where problems could occur]
The patches use the dmi table to match the machines, so only the
matched Asus laptops will be impacted by the patches, if there is
any regression, the regression only affects those matched Asus
laptops, and the regression possibility is very low since ubuntu
users already tested the patches on their own Asus laptops.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1991703] Re: Failure to boot with linux-image-5.19.0-18-generic

2022-10-08 Thread Jeffrey Baker
I don't know how to bring this to the attention of the relevant people,
but this is clearly a show-stopper. It renders most intel systems
unbootable. It's really unfortunate that a diff of this size was slipped
in moments before the kernel freeze. In my opinion having the system in
a non-working state in the last 5 days of the release cycle puts the
release date at risk.

When working normally, random freezes happen. Everything freezes,
  except the mouse cursor.

I tried from keyboard to: switch to another window, start a terminal,
run a command to restart gnome, enabled ctrl+alt+backspace and tried
it to restart X windows, ctrl+alt+delete, switch to another session
  with ctrl+alt+F1-F9 - nothing works.

  If I'm listening to something, the sound goes on for a while;
sometimes it stops by itself, other times it keeps going.

The only way to recover that I've found is to stop the laptop from the
  power button.

For a while I thought it was due to firefox; I installed the deb
version and then switched to chrome - same behavior.

It didn't happen when I was playing Hollow Knight in Steam, or when
I've used the terminal and nothing else.

Bug description:
JACK does not appear as an API when using PortAudio-v19 in Gutsy.
Might occur in Hardy too, haven't tried it yet.

What appears to be happening is that JACK support is disabled when the
package is being built. I've tried to fix this myself, but I can't
figure out why. It always gets disabled for some reason.

I've had about 100 Mixxx users complain that JACK support was removed
from Mixxx when they upgrade from Feisty->Gutsy, but it's a problem
with the PortAudio package, not Mixxx. (It's not even a problem with
PortAudio itself - it's just that JACK support is being disabled
somehow in the rules file in the DEB package.)

  Help!

  [ Impact ]

   * hwe-5.19 kernel has to be compiled with gcc-12+ for the new
security kernel config options that have been enabled in that kernel
  (init zero structs).

   * dkms needs to be patched to attempt to use the same compiler as was
used to build the kernel, specifically use gcc for v5.15 but gcc-12
  for v5.19+ in jammy

   * dkms autopkgtests also need to be improved to ensure there are no
false negatives when kernel has module under test already built-in at
  the same version.

   * because linux-headers packages in Ubuntu do not depend on a
toolchain, and it is very hard to correctly depend on a native or
cross-toolchain, add gcc-12 dependency in the dkms package.

  [ Test Plan ]

   * Retrigger dkms module test for a built-in package of the same
version as already built into the kernel, for example zfs-linux dkms.
  It should pass.

   * Attempt to build dkms modules against v5.15 kernel and v5.19 kernel
from proposed. dkms module should be built with gcc and gcc-12
  respectively.

[ Where problems could occur ]

   * New gcc-12 dependency on the dkms package may result in two
compilers being installed in the Ubuntu Desktop Live image

   * New gcc-12 dependency may prevent automatic upgrade/installation of
the dkms package update via unattended upgrades.

  [ Other Info ]

   * It is questionable for dkms to depend on any c-compiler, given that
a module for a given kernel can really be built with the same
toolchain and the same compiler features.

   * In debian, linux kernel packages ship and extra configuration file
in the kernel headers, dkms uses said configuration file to use a
matching compiler, and linux-headers packages depend on the toolchain
used to build a given kernel. Maybe in the future Ubuntu could
  consider using the same packaging.

   * Some DKMS modules need further fixes to preserve and not loose the
  compiler setting

toolchain and the same compiler features.
