Bug description:
After updating to Kernel 6.2 a few days ago, I have been experiencing
issues with my system's shutdown and reboot functions. During these
processes, the system becomes unresponsive and hangs on a black
screen, which displays both the Dell and Ubuntu logos. This issue is
inconsistent; it happens sporadically. Currently, the only workaround
I've found to successfully shut down the system is to forcibly power
off the machine by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

I've also tested a fresh installation of Ubuntu 22.04.3.

Bug description:
(This can also be an nvidia related problem)

Mouse pointer behaves as if it has an invisible square attached to it.
This square covers some area next to the pointer, but it is not always
clear exactly where (a link to a screenshot is shown below, please
note the white square with some text from the previous webpage
  displayed in that window).

This makes selecting text difficult, as one never knows where exactly
the selection ends. Also, scrolling in some windows becomes
problematic, as the pointer shadows a part of the scrollbar. When a
text is being typed, one needs to make sure that the pointer is parked
sufficiently far from the text (so, to make a long story short, this
  is very annoying).

This behavior does not depend on the choice of the cursor theme.

Failing to shutdown/power off or reboot on AMD Ryzen CPUs on kernel

Bug description:
When booting up Ubuntu 18.04 with a kernel version of 5.3.0-52 or
later (including 5.3.0-53), everything seems to be working as usual.
However, when I shutdown, the system will only soft shutdown, with the
CPU still running at full power, forcing me to hold down the power
button to fully power off affected systems. If I reboot, it will cause
the system to hang and not respond. Either way, a hard reset or
poweroff will be required, and this is not an option for systems being
remotely accessed. It is not possible for me to collect kernel logs at
this point, unless something wrong is happening in those kernel
  versions before the actual shutdown.

It is possible that this may also occur on Ubuntu 20.04 with kernel
versions 5.4.0-29 and later, but I have not yet tested this out. This
problem is occurring on both my desktop and laptop computers which
  respectively are:

  * AsRock B450 Pro4 with AMD Ryzen 3 3200G APU
  * Lenovo ThinkPad A485 with AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 2500U mobile APU

In the meantime, I am stuck on kernel version 5.3.0-51, as that is the
last working 5.3.x kernel version offered in the standard Ubuntu
repositories that doesn't have this problem, without me having to use
PPAs. I don't know if this problem also occurs on systems with Intel
CPUs, as I don't own any recently-made system (last 3 years from 2017)
with such CPUs to test if this problem occurs on them.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829620] Re: intel-microcode on ASUS makes kernel stuck during loading initramfs on bionic-updates, bionic-security

2019-05-31 Thread aditya lele
Hi,

I think the discussions already confirm this. Just wanted to reiterate:
I have ASUS-FX533FD Zenbook laptop with i7-8565U CPU. I also faced the
same problem as mentioned in the bug description. I can confirm that it
was fixed with "WORKAROUND 2: downgrade (and hold) intel-microcode to
older version from bionic/main".

Thanks for your help.

  Description:

5.0.0.15.71 amd64 [installed]

  - the setup is not new, has been working perfectly before (about 7
  days since my last restart?)

  System:
  - HW: ASUS Zenbook 14 UX433FN
  - Ubuntu 18.04, runing latest HWE, fully updated
  - grub(-pc), cryptsetup (crypttab entries for custom encrypted LUKS setup),

  Suspected/possible cause?:
  - recent intel-microcode package update
  - recent kernel package updates

  Steps taken:
  - tried to remove "splash quiet" from grub/kernel cmd line (also tried adding
nosplash, noplymouth)
  - completely removed nvidia drivers (apt purge *nvidia*)
  - completely purged and reinstalled grub (grup-pc)
  - completely purged and reinstalled all kernels (headers, modules, image, ..)
  - toggle BIOS "fastboot" (now using OFF)
  - toggle UEFI SecureBoot (now using ON)
  - remove plymouth (apt remove *plymouth* , but the workaround is working with
plymouth installed)

  Workaround:
  - so far, I'm only able to boot with non-Ubuntu kernel!
(linux-image-liquorix-amd64)
  - which needs "splash" option ON
  - reinstall cryptsetup & update-grub (as suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1829620/comments/10 )

I am not sure how to get you more debug info, as this setup has been
working before, and it's a very eary boot-process bug, so I can't even
  access dmesg etc.

  EDIT:

  Hypothesis:
Only affects ASUS with i7-8565U Whiskey Lake Intel CPU

  Upstream Bug Report:
  https://github.com/intel/Intel-Linux-Processor-Microcode-Data-Files/issues/1

WORKAROUND 1: disable intel microcode updates during boot
  From this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-microcode/+bug/1759920
1/ add the boot parameter: dis_ucode_ldr to /etc/default/grub
  2/ update-grub

WORKAROUND 2: downgrade (and hold) intel-microcode to older version from
bionic/main
  apt install --reinstall intel-microcode=3.20180312.0~ubuntu18.04.1

@Carter Braxton

Having the same problem with you. But now it's working. Thanks for the
tips. For those of you having the same problem with me and Carter
Braxton (low resolution in 4.4.0-109 kernel). You need to PURGE all
4.4.0-108 kernel image and the remaining HEADERS. Use command: sudo apt

  Hello team,
It seems Microsemi team has requested to backport few AACRAID driver patches
for Power 9 platform for 17.04 and 16.04.3 kernel.

  Hi Narinder,

We have submitted a handful of critical fixes for the AACRAID driver
on to the kernel.org, targeting 4.11. These patches are bug fixes and
our customer IBM is expecting these patches to go into the 16.04.3
release, for to use with the Power9 platforms.

Can you please let me know if these patches will be backported by your
kernel team on to the upcoming 16.04.3? Do you also have a schedule in
  place for 16.04.3 release?

  Thanks,

  Below are the patch details.

Subject: [PATCH V2 00/19] aacraid: Patchset with reset rework and misc
  fixes

This patchset primarily focuses on tweaking and hardening the
controller reset support for both ARC and HBA1000 devices. Now the
driver can only reset the controller thru eh reset. Included a srb
memory fix and pci dma allocation fix.

  Changes in V2:
   - Corrected heading and description for srb memory patch and removed stray
 comment.
   - Removed incorrect up function call and cleared fib wait flag after call
to down interruptible in the ioctl return on ctrl reset patch.
   - Added review acknowledgements by David Carroll thank you Dave for
finding the above issues in the above 2 patches.

Bug description:
  Hello team,
It seems Microsemi team has requested to backport few AACRAID driver patches
for Power 9 platform for 17.04 and 16.04.3 kernel.

  Thanks,
  Gana

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1689980] Re: AACRAID for power9 platform

2017-06-05 Thread raghava aditya renukunta
Hello Seth,
Yes the hardware is tested thoroughly on platforms other than Power 9 (was
tested on x86 etc). Could you please point us to the patches that might seem
concerning?

Also could you please point me to the kernel that these patches will be
added on? I want make sure that we did not miss any important patches.

Regards,
Raghava Aditya

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1488426] Re: High CPU usage of kworker/ksoftirqd

2015-12-08 Thread Aditya
The above working patch has been merged in linux-4.1.y branch of linux-
stable repository as can been seen here:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/log/?qt=grep&q=mmc%3A+core%3A+Enable+runtime+PM+management+of+host+devices&h=linux-4.1.y

Since Ubuntu 15.10 comes with Kernel version 4.2, I guess using Ubuntu
15.10 would fix the issue. I would wait for 14.04.4 to come out in Feb
2016 with updated kernel as depicted here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack#Kernel.2BAC8-Support.A14.04.x_Ubuntu_Kernel_Support

And then upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1488426] Re: High CPU usage of kworker/ksoftirqd

2015-11-30 Thread Aditya
Hi AceLan,

I am also affected by this issue and using the patched kernel available
at http://people.canonical.com/~acelan/lp1475248/ solved the issue for
me.

Now the update manager gives me an upgrade for the three linux packages.
Can I install them? Please guide me how do I remain updated with latest
security fixes while still having the patch applied to the kernel?

I have installed 14.04.3 (with vivid HWE).

Regards,
Aditya

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391732] Re: Ubuntu 14.4 problem

2014-11-13 Thread Aditya Shankar Tripathi
Actually last night I tried few more solutions on internet and after shutting
down the system and then restarting it (not restart), suddenly the TOUCHPAD
WORKED.
And it Worked fine till today's noon.
But I ran few commands in terminal (not related to touchpad or its drivers),
and after rebooting the system it STOPPED WORKING again. However when it was
working "/proc/bus/input/devices" command, detected "Synaptics Touchpad". But
now when I run the same command it doesn't show any touchpad.
I am surprised and worried.
Please respond.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1221995] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work with 3.11 or 3.13 kernels

2014-08-05 Thread Aditya
@Rafael,

I manually installed the `linux-image-3.13.0-33-generic` package, but it
doesn't seem to solve the problem. Booting to this kernel says "No
bluetooth adapters found" (as against "Bluetooth is diabled" in
v3.13.0-32) although I have the adapter connected.

Moreover, the kernel creates additional problems. It doesn't recognize
my mouse and the display is stretched on the monitor with lower
resolution.

In short, the package doesn't work. Let me know if you need any
assistance.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1221995] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work with 3.11 or 3.13 kernels

2014-08-03 Thread Aditya
@Rafael

I have added your ppa but when I run `sudo apt update && sudo apt
upgrade` it only offers me to upgrade `linux-libc-dev` package and
nothing else. Is that good? I suppose it should offer me to update 4-5
linux related packages from your repository and have I haven't installed
the update.

Right now I am running the mainline kernel version 3.14.15.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2014-03-14 Thread Aditya
I have just tested v3.14-rc6-trusty from mainline kernel and the issue
seems to have been fixed.

Title:
0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work
  after upgrading to Saucy

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
After upgrading to Saucy, the bluetooth-indicator was no longer
present in the taskbar. If I go to System Settings >> Bluetooth; it
shows as "Bluetooth is disabled" and toggling the On|Off Switch
  doesn't enable it: http://i.stack.imgur.com/vwfEo.png

I have installed the Blueman Device Manager to solve this issue and
its bluetooth indicator is shown on the taskbar, but it doesn't
function. However, toggling the On|Off switch in System Settings >>
Bluetooth, grays out the icon of Blueman indicator in the taskbar.

To debug the issue, I am following the instructions mentioned at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection. I have downloaded and installed
the kernals from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/linux:
  - 3.9.0-7.15 works for me
  - 3.10.0-0.6 doesn't work

For further commit bisecting, I have downloaded the git repository of
`ubuntu-saucy` by running: git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
  /ubuntu-saucy.git

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292509] Re: Missing statistics for `tx_bytes`, `tx_packets`, `rx_bytes` and `rx_packets` since Ubuntu 13.10

2014-03-14 Thread Aditya
Hi Joseph,

The has been fixed in v3.14-rc6-trusty mainline kernel. But I guess,
14.04 LTS would ship with kernel v3.13. Can the fix be back-ported from
v3.14 to v3.13 before release?

Moreover, this bug relating to bluetooth has also been fixed in v3.14:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1245150

Thanks :)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292509] [NEW] Missing statistics for `tx_bytes`, `tx_packets`, `rx_bytes` and `rx_packets` since Ubuntu 13.10

2014-03-14 Thread Aditya
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 13.10 and have an Ethernet connection to connect to
the Internet.

If I set my ISP username and password in router-cum-modem (ADSL) itself
(i.e.; I get connected to internet automatically by just powering on my
router); I don't get the information about `tx_bytes`, `tx_packets`,
`rx_bytes` and `rx_packets` anymore.

If I don't put the username and password in router; and instead use
`sudo pppoeconf` to configure my connection by providing my ISP username
and password; I get the information about `tx_bytes`, `tx_packets`,
`rx_bytes` and `rx_packets` as expected.

It is probably because of this bug, that Gnome System Monitor doesn't
update Network History as reported earlier:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2014-01-08 Thread Aditya
@Christopher..

YAY... That patch worked.. The kernel compiled well and I can use
bluetooth once again.. Please do the needful to merge that patch in the
kernel. Let me know if you require any more information in this regard.

Title:
0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work
  after upgrading to Saucy

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2014-01-07 Thread Aditya
@Christopher

I have found Bug No. 60824 on Linux Bug Tracker:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60824

It looks like the same problem as this one. There is a patch provided by
Gustavo Padovan in Comment no. 6:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60824#c6

Can you help me in applying this patch to the kernel... I have read
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/applying-patches.txt but I am
not sure if I need to change branches using git...

Right now, my git repo reports as:

$ git remote -v
origin http://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/
(fetch)
origin http://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/
(push)

The repo is fully updated as of today and right now I am on the master
branch... Could you please hand-hold me to apply the patch mentioned
above?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-12-11 Thread Aditya
I have not yet given up hope.. I am trying to do the bisection, but
everytime I get into the situation of not being able to boot the kernel.
For someone who hasn't done anything like this before; building the
kernels and bisecting it to get hold of the bad commit is a pretty
daunting task indeed. Any it takes upwards to 2.5hours to build the
kernel on my system.

So, I am still doing the bisection as and when possible and would report
things in due course.

However, is it possible to provide more parameters to `git bisect start`
in order to cut down the number of bisections required in this case; as
mentioned over here:

https://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-
bisect.html#_cutting_down_bisection_by_giving_more_parameters_to_bisect_start

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-11-24 Thread Aditya
@Christopher, I once again started the bisecting process, for me the
size of kernnels built are abnormal, however I have installed them.

I had built and installed the 1st bisection. It turned out to be good
and bluetooth was working on it. Then, I built the 2nd bisection. I have
installed the files generated from 2nd bisection, but I can't boot to
it. So, I am stuck in this bisection process and can't proceed further.

Following is the output of `git bisect log`:

$ git bisect log
# bad: [c7788792a5e7b0d5d7f96d0766b4cb6112d47d75] Linux 3.10-rc2
# good: [896f5009ed1fbaec43f360c4ebf022639cd61d5f] Linux 3.9.11

# good: [c1be5a5b1b355d40e6cf79cc979eb66dafa24ad1] Linux 3.9

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-10-30 Thread Aditya
Chistopher, I am not feeling comfortable installing that right now. I
have my exams during the next three weeks and I can't risk an unstable
system till that time. CommitBisection would also requrie me to build
and install the kernel atleast 13 times. So, I would get back to this
bug after 21st November and restart the Commit Bisection process at that
time.

Hope you would help me then and thanks for your patience.

function. However, toggling the On|Off switch in System Settings >>
Bluetooth, grays out the icon of Blueman indicator in the taskbar.

To debug the issue, I am following the instructions mentioned at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection. I have downloaded and installed
the kernals from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/linux:
  - 3.9.0-7.15 works for me
  - 3.10.0-0.6 doesn't work

For further commit bisecting, I have downloaded the git repository of
`ubuntu-saucy` by running: git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
  /ubuntu-saucy.git

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-10-28 Thread Aditya
Hi Christopher,

I made an attempt to compile the mainline kernel. It took more than 90
minutes on my machine to compile the packages for i386. However, there
are a few anomalies. It created 4 .deb packages for me:

- linux-firmware-image_3.9.0-adi01-1_i386.deb (1.1 MB)
- linux-headers-3.9.0-adi01_3.9.0-adi01-1_i386.deb (8.4 MB)
- linux-image-3.9.0-adi01_3.9.0-adi01-1_i386.deb (711.9 MB)
- linux-libc-dev_3.9.0-adi01-1_i386.deb (941.8 kB)

I don't know why it compiled v3.9.0 (maybe I made some mistake
somewhere). Moreover, the size of linux-image is too huge in my opinion.
Should I attempt to install these .deb packages? Or, there is something
wrong with them because of its huge size. (Generally the size of update
for ubuntu-kernal happens to be ~60 MB).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-10-27 Thread Aditya
I have downloaded and installed v3.9.11-saucy, v3.10-rc1-saucy and
v3.10-rc2-saucy from the mainline build repository:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Out of this:
- v3.9.11-saucy works well
- v3.10-rc1-saucy did seem to install but doesn't boot for me
- v3.10-rc2-saucy doesn't work

So, the problem is between v3.9.11-saucy and v3.10-rc2-saucy in the
mainline builds.

v3.9.11-saucy is GOOD
v3.10-rc2-saucy is BAD

(BTW, both these mainline builds broke my Network connection. I hope
that doesn't affect us. My network connection was and is fine in all the
other kernals.)

Please guide me through the next step.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-10-27 Thread Aditya
Christopher, while trying to bisect my debian and debian.master folders
disappeared because I am commit bisecting Ubuntu kernel versions across
non-linear tags (I don't know what that means :-)) as per this
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection
#Commit_bisecting_Ubuntu_kernel_versions_across_non-linear_tags

So, I would have to bisect the upstream kernal versions.. I am first of
all going to do KernalBisection by downloading and installing the
mainline kernals from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Thereafter, I would need to do CommitBisection. I am reading up on it,
but let me know would I have to download the whole MEGABYTES of another
Git repository? If so, which one - I haven't found yet...

Thanks for your support :-)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] Re: 0a12:0001 Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-10-27 Thread Aditya
Christopher,

The linked article mentions the command to run as:

$ git bisect start

In my case, Bad is `Ubuntu-3.10.0-0.6`; and Good is `Ubuntu-3.9.0-7.15`

So, I think I am supposed to run:

$ git bisect start Ubuntu-3.10.0-0.6 Ubuntu-3.9.0-7.15

Please confirm the same. Moreover, I think I would have to build the
kernals myself which would be time-consuming on my machine. Is it
somehow possible to use Launchpad PPA's service to download the built
kernals and install them?

This is the first time I am attempting something like this, so please
forgive my ignorance about it.

Cheers :-)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1245150] [NEW] Bluetooth Dongle (Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd) doesn't work after upgrading to Saucy

2013-10-27 Thread Aditya
Public bug reported:

I am facing an almost identical bug as mentioned in LP Bug #1221995.

After upgrading to Saucy, the bluetooth-indicator was no longer present
in the taskbar. If I go to System Settings >> Bluetooth; it shows as
"Bluetooth is disabled" and toggling the On|Off Switch doesn't enable
it.

http://i.stack.imgur.com/vwfEo.png

(I have installed the Blueman Device Manager to solve this issue and its
bluetooth indicator is shown on the taskbar, but it doesn't function.
However, toggling the On|Off switch in System Settings >> Bluetooth,
grays out the icon of Blueman indicator in the taskbar.)

I have tried running the Live USB of both Ubuntu 13.10 and Lubuntu 13.10
- bluetooth doesn't work in live environment as well.

To debug the issue, I am following the instructions mentioned at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection.

I have downloaded and installed the kernals from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/linux

- 3.9.0-7.15 works for me
- 3.10.0-0.6 doesn't work

So, the issue is between these two releases. For further commit
bisecting, I have downloaded the git repository of `ubuntu-saucy` by
running:

$ git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-saucy.git

To see how many commits are there in between, I run the following
command:

$ git log --oneline Ubuntu-3.9.0-7.15..Ubuntu-3.10.0-0.6 | wc
  14802 117434 922801

Please help me further. Are there 14802 commits in between?

I did this, as a result, the system is responsive for 10 - 15 seconds
after brightness change.
I am able to change brightness multiple times within this window. After
this the system freezes.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1007765] Re: brightness adjusting crashes system

2013-08-23 Thread Aditya
Hi,
by different I mean that the system freezes in both the situations, with
nmi_watchdog enabled and disabled, and this happens as soon as I soon as I
change the brightness levels, and this is the reason I actually reached this
bug report.

Thanks,

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1007765] Re: brightness adjusting crashes system

2013-08-23 Thread Aditya
Thanks Marwan for the detailed description of the bug.
I just posted this as a fix for the users who were unable to change brightness,
and I had no idea how deep the roots of this bug are.

In my case, both acpi_video0 and acpi_video1 do not work, i.e. the brightness
does not change and the system is functional.
When I use acpi_backlight=vendor things are different even if I disable
nmi_watchdog .

Are there any tests that I run?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1007765] Re: brightness adjusting crashes system

2013-08-22 Thread Aditya
May be the community is looking for the solution in the wrong direction.
Looking in /sys/class/backlight/ lists 3 folders on my Dell inspiron 7520.
One of the folders is intel_backlight .

Manually doing
root@Sirius:~# echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
works.

This means that the problem is somewhere in the X configuration.

>From a thread here https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29273
I created an entry in xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "intel"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

I created this by using X -c
and copying only relevant section to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The controls are working fine now. I *do not* have acpi_backlight=vendor .
I just have acpi_osi=Linux , and I am not very sure if it is needed at all.
