[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1385453] Re: Toshiba R700 backlight control not always working

2014-11-04 Thread Alan Pater
As a workaround, creating an xorg.conf file and specifying
intel_backlight seems to work, but I would love for this to work out
of the box. Does something need to be changed in the kernel to recognize
that this model of Toshiba uses the Intel Backlight?

Toshiba R700 backlight control not always working

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
When returning from sleep mode, I lose backlight control via Fn-F7.

  Restarting the system restores control.

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
  ~$ uname -psrv
  Linux 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014 x86_64

I could also adjust the brightness from the terminal:

  ~$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
  1030

  ~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/*
  /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:1030

  /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:1030

So, to temporarily increase the screen brightness:

  ~$ echo 3030 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

But that does not give back control via Fn-F7, it just gives an
independent way of adjusting the backlight.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1385453] Re: Toshiba R700 backlight control not always working

2014-10-26 Thread Alan Pater
I'm afraid that the stickers are mostly worn off. The Portege R700 sticker is
intact, but I don't see a legible model or serial number.
There is a P/N that starts with PT311... Is that the model number?

I highly suspect that it was originally sold in the USA, though I bought
it second hand elsewhere.

No, nothing under the battery. Did Toshiba make a significant number of
different versions of the R700?

  ~$ echo 3030 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
  3030

But that does not give back control via Fn-F7, it just gives an
independent way of adjusting the backlight.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1385453] [NEW] Toshiba R700 backlight control not always working

2014-10-24 Thread Alan Pater
Public bug reported:

When returning from sleep mode, I lose backlight control via Fn-F7.

Restarting the system restores control.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
~$ uname -psrv
Linux 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014 x86_64

I could also adjust the brightness from the terminal:

~$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
1030

~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/*
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness:4539

So, to temporarily increase the screen brightness:

~$ echo 3030 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
3030

But that does not give back control via Fn-F7, it just gives an
independent way of adjusting the backlight.

Upstream kernel linux-image-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic locked up the
system when playing with the backlight control.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1214148] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed

2014-06-23 Thread Alan Pater
Symptom sometimes occurs on a R700 Toshiba when returning from sleep
mode. Restarting the system restores this functionality.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
~$ uname -psrv
Linux 3.13.0-29-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 4 21:00:20 UTC 2014 x86_64

I could also adjust the brightness from the terminal:

~$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
1030

~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/*
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness:4539

So, to temporarily increase the screen brightness:

~$ echo 3030 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
3030

Title:
[Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be
  changed

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On my Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 laptop, the display hotkeys and
display brightness settings do not work at all.

  Symptoms:
  1. When I use Fn F6 or Fn F7, I get a pop-up window that shows a light bulb
and a slider, and the slider goes obediently up and down as I press F6/7.
However, the brightness of the screen does not change as the slider indicator
changes.
  2. If I go into the Power Manager and set the display brightness to dim after
a few seconds has passed, it doesn't dim.

So it seems to me that the hotkeys are being recognized as a method to
change the display brightness, but that the operating system is unable
to change the hardware's actual screen brightness... I don't think
it's a hotkey problem per se.

  I read through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight and
I think I have the problem defined as:

Backlight control does not work, but there are entries in
  /sys/class/backlight.

Although I do not seem to have the Brightness applet on my system (I
am running XFCE, so maybe that is why), but the Power Manager's
brightness control is definitely not working.

This is a recent install of Ubuntu, on a newly purchased laptop, so I
have no idea whether it was working in previous versions of Ubuntu,
  kernels, etc. Sorry.

I used the ubuntu-bug utility to report this bug, so I am not sure
what else you need... but I am starting by attaching the Xorg log, and
will attach the lspci output and other information shortly. I am also
going to follow the rest of the debugging steps on the Backlight
debugging page and attach the output as separate comments on this
  report.

[Dell Latitude D420] Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache
  for a loop

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

gets corrupted. This is shown by hdparm -T.

  Before system cache corruption:
   Timing cached reads: 1804 MB in 2.00 seconds = 902.88 MB/sec

  After system cache corruption:
   Timing cached reads: 258 MB in 2.00 seconds = 129.10 MB/sec

Either the system battery or the AC adaptor is not functioning

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 995456] Re: Duplicate ACPI video bus devices for the same VGA controller

2013-12-11 Thread Alan Pater
I ran FWTS on my system and it gave the following:

ADVICE: The ACPI video driver has found a duplicate ACPI video bus device for
the same VGA controller. If the current driver does not work, one can try to
work around this using the video.allow_duplicates=1 kernel parameter.

Note: Dell D420, Ubuntu 14.04, kernel: 3.11.0-14

Looking though the FWTS results, I see that the most recent microcode is not
being loaded.
Attempting to fix that runs me into

[Dell Latitude D420] Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache
  for a loop

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After a random period of time after a fresh boot, the system cache
gets corrupted.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1258686] Re: Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache for a loop

2013-12-09 Thread Alan Pater
Yes it occurred in the previous version and yes, I have tried about a
dozen other kernels.

I would rather do some triage to actully identify the issue instead of
getting in an endless loop of trying different kernels in the hope that
some unrelated patch will have an affect.

Bug description:
A while after logging on, the system gets really slow. Menus and
window movements take a while to respond, switching windows is slow,
  etc.

This is a regression, it was not like this using Ubuntu 12.10, it just
started on 13.04. Tried different desktops (Unity, GnomeFaillback,
Lxde). They all have the same issue.

Testing showed the issue is worsened by the TLP power management package.
TLP was installed in an attempt to resolve issue of fan running constantly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1258686] [NEW] Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache for a loop

2013-12-06 Thread Alan Pater
Public bug reported:

After a random period of time after a fresh boot, the system cache gets
corrupted.

Either the system battery or the AC adaptor is not functioning
correctly, the Dell bios at times indicates that the AC adaptor is not a
valid Dell product, though it is. In any case, the battery does not
charge, but remains at 0%.

Title:
Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache for a loop

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After a random period of time after a fresh boot, the system cache
gets corrupted.

Either the system battery or the AC adaptor is not functioning
correctly, the Dell bios at times indicates that the AC adaptor is not
a valid Dell product, though it is. In any case, the battery does not
  charge, but remains at 0%.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1246793] Re: Battery charging slows down laptop

2013-12-06 Thread Alan Pater
Looks like you have run into the infamous CPU frequency issue.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_CPU_frequency_scaling

Solution is to make sure you are running with high quality AC power.

Workaround is to edit /etc/default/grub

Find the following line and add processor.ignore_ppc=1
so it looks like this:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash processor.ignore_ppc=1

then
  sudo update-grub sudo reboot.

Have a nice day.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1189645] Re: 13.04, lag under desktop environments

2013-08-29 Thread Alan Pater
The latest updates seem to have triggered the issue, as well as
displaying other artifacts. I now get some graphics corruption
(attached) and, while watching a (html5) video on youtube
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wp2qhoop9U), the whole system froze and
the video audio went into some sort of skip mode.

I've been running in Pavlovian mode, without flash installed and somehow
managing to avoid the conditions to trigger the issue, until today, when
an update seems have found out how to trigger it all on it's own.

Worse with a really old kernel: 3.2.48-030248-generic

With that kernel, it only took 5 minutes of light web browsing for the
system to totally bog down.

This is a regression, it was not like this using Ubuntu 12.10, it just

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1189645] Re: 13.04, lag under desktop environments

2013-07-21 Thread Alan Pater
With the bios update, it takes longer to trigger, but eventually, yes,
the system slows down. Videos get out of sync, opening applications,
moving windows, menus all get really slow.

~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
A06
02/02/2008

In an attempt to quantify, I run hdparm and gtkperf. They both show
large losses in performance.

Before:
~$ gtkperf -a
Total time: 12.02

~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda
 Timing cached reads: 1674 MB in 2.00 seconds = 837.49 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.11 seconds = 20.57 MB/sec

After:
~$ gtkperf -a
Total time: 40.88

~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda
 Timing cached reads: 442 MB in 2.00 seconds = 221.04 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 62 MB in 3.05 seconds = 20.31 MB/sec

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1189645] Re: 13.04, lag under desktop environments

2013-07-18 Thread Alan Pater
It seems the TLP was not the main cause after all. I've purged TLP from
the system, rebooted multiple times, and the issue still appears, just
not as quickly.
