Joseph, I am sorry to report that the error popped up again: this time, after mounting the drive, then unmounting, then re-mounting, then unmounting-- froze. Had to hard reboot again. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1275227] [NEW] Computer froze completely upon ejecting firewire external hard drive
Public bug reported: Firewire 800 hard drives have been plugged in and out of this macbook pro 8,3 laptop running ubuntu 12.04 many times. Today, I plugged in the drive, copied a number of files into it, and upon pushing the eject button in nautilus (as usual), the computer froze: mouse didn't move, couldn't switch to a tty to kill e.g. a rogue program, nothing. After a few seconds, I heard the fan going full speed, indicating that a program got stuck at 100% CPU usage. After a hard reboot, all is back to normal. First time this happens in the 2 years I've been using this laptop with ubuntu 12.04. Thanks for looking into this.
