Title:
Boot failure after upgrading kernel to 2.6.32-25-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After installing 10.04.1 in a 32-bit VM and updating only the kernel
package to 2.6.32-25-generic the system fails to boot due to udevd
process segfaulting (somewhere in libc.so) and thus neither of
required kernel modules being loaded. Booting into previous kernel
(2.6.32-24-generic) brings the system back to the working state.
Initramsfs image for 2.6.32-25-generic appears to be in a good shape.

The issue affects 32 bit installations only; 64-bit guests boot fine
with both 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 kernels.

Please note that apport information has been collected on 2.6.32-24
kernel and not the troublesome 2.6.32-25.

Bug description:
Using Intrepid Alpha 5, with kernel 2.6.27-2-generic, the new atheros
driver ath5k frequently fails to initialize the hardware at boot time
or during resume. I have an AR5424 in a ThinkPad X61. When the
device fails, I get messages like these:

  Sep 10 23:09:31 stinkpad kernel: [16755.056940] ath5k phy0: Atheros AR5424
chip found (MAC: 0xa3, PHY: 0x61)

timeout (2412MHz)
  Sep 10 23:09:51 stinkpad kernel: [16774.520615] ath5k phy0: unable to reset
hardware: -11

Sometimes it goes on and on like that, complaining about every
frequency the hardware is capable of using. In any case, it never
works right after that. It is necessary to power down the machine.
The madwifi driver in Hardy didn't have this problem.

Title:
EFI stub loader broken in kernel 3.13.0-101-generic (& later in 3.13
  series)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Trusty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The EFI stub loader produces consistent boot errors when booting
Trusty starting with version 3.13.0-101-generic. This bug can be
reproduced in many ways (using efibootmgr, an EFI shell, rEFInd,
  etc.). One approach is:

  1) Install an EFI shell on the computer and set it as the default boot
 option using efibootmgr.
  2) Copy the kernel and initrd files from /boot to /boot/efi.
  3) Rename the kernel file to use a .efi filename extension.
  4) Reboot into the EFI shell.
  5) Try to launch the kernel with a command like:
 fs0:\vmlinuz-3.13.0-104-generic.efi ro root=/dev/sda2
initrd=\initrd.img-3.13.0-104-generic

The result will be a hung or crashed system. (In VirtualBox, in which
I've tested this, the VM produces a "guru meditation" and the session
  terminates.)

I myself have tested only with the 3.13.0-104 kernel; however, reports
from others indicate that the problem began with the 3.13.0-101
kernel. See this Kubuntu forum thread for details:

  https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?71204-Cannot-load-latest-
  kernels

Note that early on, this thread focuses on rEFInd; however, the bug
can be reproduced with other boot managers, including the EFI shell,
as described in the preceding procedure, so I do not believe this is a
rEFInd bug. rEFInd relies on the EFI stub loader to boot a Linux
kernel, and I believe it's this component that's failing. The problem
does NOT occur when using GRUB to launch the kernel. (GRUB does not
rely on the EFI stub loader.)

I have NOT encountered the problem with Xenial and its 4.4.0-series kernels
(last tested: 4.4.0-53-generic) or Yakkety and its 4.8.0-series kernels (last
tested: 4.8.0-30-generic). I have not yet tested Trusty with kernels from
series beyond 3.13.0.

Resume results in black screen. Graphics can appear completely messed
up (i.e. torn last jpg viewed over top of latest jpg). This happens in
Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04. It happens with: no intel drivers installed,
and with or without the i915 and intel_agp modules explicitly enabled
  in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.

WORKAROUND: Using the following kernel parameters I no longer get the message
in the log, the video does not appear to be as crisp somehow, but I can suspend
and wake from the command:
  linemodeset=0 video.allow_duplicates=1

Title:
Cutting or copying files on btrfs to ecryptfs results in data loss

Status in eCryptfs:
  Fix Released
Status in Linux:
  Unknown
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  I've installed a fresh copy of 14.04 beta 2 on a brand-new SSD. I
  used btrfs as the filesystem.

I set up a Private folder usying ecryptfs-setup-private.

I copied a few folders into the Private folder, and the entire
directory structure and subfolders are copied, including the files
themselves, yet every file contains 0 bytes.

However, I can create and save new files in the Private directory.
Also, folders and files can be correctly copied if I use the command line cp
-R.

  Thanks,
  Damon
