[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1898338] [NEW] keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

2020-10-03 Thread Bernard Moreton
Public bug reported:

After the upgrade the keyboard, set as 'English (UK)' appeared to be using a
US layout, with double-quote(") and 'at' sign(@) transposed, and key left of
'z' giving "<"/">" instead of "\"/"|" - and pound sign (GBP: £) not (yet) found.
Corrected by adding Estonian layout, then selecting English (UK) (now correct
in Preview), then deleting Estonian layout.

The layout reverted after some sudo operations, and was corrected in the
same manner.

After bootup today, the keyboard was again showing the same problems.
The same fix was again effective (though I don't suppose Estonian has
anything much to do with it!).

This behaviour is dangerous in the shell, when a pipe sign is replaced
by a redirection sign.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

Title:
keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After the upgrade the keyboard, set as 'English (UK)' appeared to be using a
US layout, with double-quote(") and 'at' sign(@) transposed, and key left of
'z' giving "<"/">" instead of "\"/"|" - and pound sign (GBP: £) not (yet) found.
Corrected by adding Estonian layout, then selecting English (UK) (now correct
in Preview), then deleting Estonian layout.

The layout reverted after some sudo operations, and was corrected in
  the same manner.

After bootup today, the keyboard was again showing the same problems.
The same fix was again effective (though I don't suppose Estonian has
anything much to do with it!).

This behaviour is dangerous in the shell, when a pipe sign is replaced by a
redirection sign.

Title:
keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1898338] Re: keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

2020-10-06 Thread Bernard Moreton
The problem persists. Every bootup leaves the default keyboard labelled as
English(UK), but performing like US(?).
I note that the problem has been known before,
https://askubuntu.com/questions/282283/keyboard-layout-reverts-at-every-boot
though I have never experienced it until now.
None of the suggested solutions in that question session work for me, and they
are all rather old anyway.

Title:
keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1898338] Re: keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

2020-10-09 Thread Bernard Moreton
After every reboot, 'setxkbmap -query' shows "layout: us"

As a temporary fix, I've now set 'setxkbmap gb' in an executable file,
so it can be run with a minimal number of keystrokes.

LOCALE is unchanged from before the LTS upgrade, as is the keyboard itself, and
/etc/default/keyboard
Somewhere in the bootup process the keyboard layout is being silently changed
to "us", without any change in /etc/default/keyboard or in the keyboard name.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2045467] [NEW] qprint emits dos-style \r \n

2023-12-02 Thread Bernard Moreton
Public bug reported:

$ echo r.fässlin...@somewhere.com | qprint -e | od -c
000 r . f = C 3 = A 4 s s l i n g e

040 \n
041

The "\r" confuses any addition of prefix "<=?UTF-8?Q?" and suffix "=>"
when creating a quoted-printable email encoding, so that the suffix
appears at the start of the string.

Piping to "tr -d '\r'" resolves the issue, but shouldn't be necessary.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2045467] Re: qprint emits dos-style \r \n

2023-12-03 Thread Bernard Moreton
The documentation on the source code
(https://www.fourmilab.ch/webtools/qprint/#Download) says (p.4, #8)
"Procedure output line break outputs the standard RFC 822 line break sequence
of carriage-return,
line-feed and resets the current output line length to zero."

That's good for multi-line output, but not good for translating a single
non-ascii email address.
Perhaps an option might be provided for single-line output on *nix systems, to
suppress the CR character.

The man page says nothing about RFC 822 or about the CR inclusion ...

And, just to be clear, my 'qprint' is downloaded from the Ubuntu
repository.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1883069] Re: New kernels downloaded yesterday failed to load

2020-08-11 Thread Bernard Moreton
The system has been updated several times since, with no further problem.
I note that this was the only time that two kernels have been downloaded
together, and I guess that may be the cause of the problem?
I held on to the previous kernel, and used that until a fresh kernel appeared,
and did not delete it until a further kernel got downloaded.
Please mark this bug as completed - fixed by time, if by nothing else

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1898338] Re: keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

2020-10-12 Thread Bernard Moreton
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Linux_console/Keyboard_configuration
(any yes, I know archlinux is not ubuntu!) says:
--
A persistent keymap can be set in /etc/vconsole.conf, which is read by systemd
on start-up. The KEYMAP variable is used for specifying the keymap. If the
variable is empty or not set, the us keymap is used as default value. See
vconsole.conf(5) for all options. For example:

/etc/vconsole.conf

KEYMAP=uk
...

For convenience, localectl may be used to set console keymap. It will
change the KEYMAP variable in /etc/vconsole.conf and also set the keymap
for current session:

$ localectl set-keymap --no-convert keymap
--
and the Ubuntu manpage for localectl basically agrees with tht.

So I ran 'sudo localectl set-keymap --no-convert gb'
and /etc/vconsole.conf was (a) created, and (b) populated with
KEYMAP=gb

This had no effect whatsoever on a shutdown and fresh reboot. The kbmap
continues to be set as the unwanted default "us".

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1898338] Re: keyboard layout unstable after LTS upgrade to 20.04

2020-10-21 Thread Bernard Moreton
I think the problem is in ibus-preferences, which had "English (US)" selected
as its keyboard.
On the "Advanced" tab, I checked "Use system keyboard layout" (was unchecked
beforehand).
That alteration has survived 2 reboots, with the keyboard setting now correctly
reflecting the physical keyboard layout.

It would seem to be a mistake to have ibus-preferences duplicating (and
overriding) the system keyboard setup, especially when it is hidden under
"references", and not so easily found as the System / Keyboard settings.
I also note that the Ibus-Preferences keyboard list appears to lack any
reference to plain vanilla "English (UK)".

Something critical changed here between 18.04 LTS and 20.04 LTS.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1900816] [NEW] libncursesw display problem in ubuntu 20.4

2020-10-21 Thread Bernard Moreton
Public bug reported:

This was first raised as a Question,
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ncurses/+question/693490

Since upgrading from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS I have 2 problems in the
screen display using AUBIT4GL

(1)
in displaying data to a screen array where the first field is short (<4
characters) and the gap between the first 2 fields is a single space, and
normal display has no explicit colour attribute,
the second field is shifted left by one character.
The CURRENT row, with colour attribute set, displays correctly.
As the row cursor is shifted down the screen and back up, the 'ghost' of
previous display remains, so the first 2 fields appear a mess.
If "normal" libncurses is used, the problem does not appear.
The problem can be 'fixed' (or rather, hidden) by applying an explicit colour
attribute to the display window, even if it's the same as the implicit colour
used when no attribute is given.

(2)
In displaying a window with a border with the top left set at column 3, the
border is displayed 1 character space left of the screen fields, so that there
is a gap at the left, and the right-hand border is lost.
A variant of this problem appears in a couple of instances, where a MENU line
is displayed. In these cases, the border round the 3 sides of the menu lines
(top or bottom of the screen) are offset left by 1 and the rest of the border
displays correctly.

The only 'fix' I have found is to shift all windows that were starting
in column 3, to use column 2 or 4+

I realise that this may not be a cursesw problem, and checking the
source code for aubit4gl is beyond me - but as far as I can see,
libncursesw is the only thing that has changed ...

My code and screen definitions hadn't changed since before the upgrade from
18.04LTS. Aubit4GL hadn't changed.
The changes in libncursesw (and/or panelw, formw) are a prime possible cause of
the new behaviour?

18.04LTS. Aubit4GL hadn't changed.
The changes in libncursesw (and/or panelw, formw) are a prime possible cause
of the new behaviour?

Title:
libncursesw display problem in ubuntu 20.4

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

The changes in libncursesw (and/or panelw, formw) are a prime possible cause
of the new behaviour?

Title:
libncursesw display problem in ubuntu 20.4

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

A variant of this problem appears in a couple of instances, where a MENU line

  screen display using AUBIT4GL

  (1)
in displaying data to a screen array where the first field is short (<4
characters) and the gap between the first 2 fields is a single space, and
normal display has no explicit colour attribute,
the second field is shifted left by one character.

The changes in libncursesw (and/or panelw, formw) are a prime possible cause
of the new behaviour?

Title:
libncursesw display problem in ubuntu 20.4

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

The changes in libncursesw (and/or panelw, formw) are a prime possible cause
of the new behaviour?
