[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1878007] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 freeze on Dell inspiron 7373 when screen is turned off

2023-09-24 Thread Carlos Cesar Caballero Diaz
@ricmelero no, I couldn't solve it. Soon the laptop started having
hardware problems and I ended up buying a new one (different brand).

Title:
Ubuntu 20.04 freeze on Dell inspiron 7373 when screen is turned off

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
This issue is happening with Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 in a Dell Inspiron
7373. When the screen is turned off (so, the suspend or screen lock
features are affected), the system freeze and I need to force the
laptop turn off and on again. There are some cases when it turn off
the screen without issues, but most of the time it freezes. Even
"SysRq REISUB" does not work for rebooting when system crash. I can
reproduce the issue using `xset dpms force off`.

Initially this bug report was filled thinking it was a suspend issue:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1832144

Syslog or systemd journal does not provide any error information about
  the crash.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1878007] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 freeze on Dell inspiron 7373 when screen is turned off

2020-05-20 Thread Carlos Cesar Caballero Diaz
Tested. Is present also in the latest drm-tip kernel.

There is something I have found that may help:
If I install Ubuntu 16.04.0, the issue is not present, but once I update
(apt-get upgrade) the problem appears, but there is the interesting detail:
if I start the upgraded 16.04 with the initial kernel, the issue is still
happening, so... Maybe is not a kernel related issue? Or a mix of the
kernel and something else?

No, using "intel_idle.max_cstate=0" don't help.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

This issue is happening with Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 in a Dell Inspiron

laptop turn off and on again. There are some cases when it turn off
the screen without issues, but most of the time it freezes. Even
"SysRq REISUB" does not work for rebooting when system crash. I can
reproduce the issue using `xset dpms force off`.

Initially this bug report was filled thinking it was a suspend issue:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1878007] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 freeze on Dell inspiron 7373 when screen is turned off

2020-05-18 Thread Carlos Cesar Caballero Diaz
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

This issue is happening with Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 in a Dell Inspiron
7373. When the screen is turned off (so, the suspend or screen lock
features are affected), the system freeze and I need to force the laptop
turn off and on again. There are some cases when it turn off the screen
without issues, but most of the time it freezes. Even "SysRq REISUB"
does not work for rebooting when system crash. I can reproduce the issue
  using `xset dpms force off`.

The issue is definitely not in the suspension, the freeze is happening
when the screen is turned off. It can be reproduced using: "xset dpms
force off"

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832144] Re: Ubuntu 19.04 suspend freeze on Dell inspiron 7373

2020-01-05 Thread Carlos Cesar Caballero Diaz
@emilio96 I think it's not a hardware problem, I just installed a xenial
based distribution and suspend worked just fine in the clean
installation before installing any updates, so the issue has being
introduced in some update. It doesn't seem to be the kernel, because
after the update I have started with the initial kernel and the problem
remains. It's maybe related with xorg or video controllers. I will make
a clean install again and start updating only some packages to find
which one introduced the issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832144] Re: Ubuntu 19.04 suspend freeze on Dell inspiron 7373

2019-09-23 Thread Carlos Cesar Caballero Diaz
Ok, I have found a new clue, I have disabled the suspension in the
energy configuration, but when the screen goes off the system equally
freeze, so, or the system is ignoring the config options and is still
suspending (I don't think so but is a possibility), or the crash is not
specific of the suspend process and is more related with the screen off
process or video driver.

Ok, I have installed the rc7 of the kernel v5.3, and if I enter in the
root prompt of the recovery mode, and type "systemctl suspend" the
laptop seems to suspend properly (the power button led turns off and the
fan stop) but then it freeze recovering.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1832144] Re: Ubuntu 19.04 suspend freeze on Dell inspiron 7373

2019-08-16 Thread Carlos Cesar Caballero Diaz
Hi kaihengfeng, thanks for your help, I had installed the last mainline
version:

Linux cccaballero-Inspiron-7373 5.3.0-050300rc4-generic
#201908111734 SMP Sun Aug 11 21:37:12 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
GNU/Linux

And this is what happened:

- first boot after the kernel was installed:
I click suspend and it works ok, the device entered in suspend state, and
recovered ok.
Afther the first successful suspension, I tried to suspend again and the device
rebooted

- second boot after the kernel was installed:
I click suspend and it works ok, the device entered in suspend state, and
recovered ok.
Afther the first successful suspension, I tried to suspend again and the device
freezed just like in the bug description.

- third boot after the kernel was installed:
I click suspend and the device freezed just like in the bug description.

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Systems with acpi-lpss can't do S3/S4 on Bionic.

  [Test]
Users confirmed these patches work for them.

  [Fix]
Commit a192aa923b66a (ACPI / LPSS: Consolidate runtime PM and system
sleep handling) applies quirks for both runtime and system suspend.
This causes problems for some systems, so avoid using quirks on S3 and
  S4.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. These patches are in upstream stable, and it brings back driver's
  old behavior.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have installed Kubuntu 18.04 on 3 different machines (my friend's and my
own) with no suspend problems but my HP Pavilion 11 x360 does not suspend.

It suspends fine with Ubuntu 17.10, Kubuntu 17.10, Devuan Jesse,
Devuan ASCII and Windows 10 but fails with Ubuntu 18.04 and Kubuntu
  18.04.

I have also tried suspend using a live USB of 18.04 on this machine
and it fails in the same way, so does not appear to be caused by any
additional programs that I had installed.

By installing an older kernel (4.14) on Kubuntu 18.04 the suspend
  function works as expected.

Running Kubuntu 18.04 with kernels 4.15, 4.16, 4.17 results in the
suspend failure that freezes the machine and requires a hard reset.

  Correct behaviour is -

Screen goes blank, fan goes off, power LED flashes to show machine is
in suspend. Pressing power button triggers 'resume' function.

  What happens -

Screen goes blank, fan stays on, power LED stays on. Machine stays in
this state and does not respond to any keyboard interaction, mouse
  movement or power button presses.

Ctrl + Alt + f1 (or f2, f3, f4 etc) does not get any response.

The only way to use the machine is to shut down by holding down the
  power button.

Checking the logs suggests that the machine believes it is in suspend
mode sleep [deep] when it isn't.

Having to hard reset to get any response means that the kernel logs
say no more than sleep [deep]

pm-suspend also results in the same problems with kernels 4.15 and
4.16, but works fine with 4.14.

It is curious that a machine that suspends fine on an earlier 4.14
kernel no longer works with 4.15 and above, whilst 3 other machines
(including one with pretty similar hardware) do not exhibit this
  problem.

There are only a handful of questions about it on the forums but at
least 3 other people have the same problem:

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029405/ubuntu-18-04-crashes-on-
  resuming-from-suspend

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1041369/after-upgrading-
  from-17-10-ubuntu-18-04-wont-sleep-suspend

I am attempting to round up anyone else with the same issue and point
  them to this bug report.

My laptop is HP Pavilion x360 11-n013na
  Matalaks is Acer Aspire ES1-511
  collisionTwo has XPS 9560

Title:
  i2c_hid_get_input floods system logs

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 4.15.0-29.31-generic 4.15.18

After upgrading to kernel version 4.15.0-29 from 4.15.0-23, the system
logs are flooded whenever I move the cursor with my touchpad.

  It looks like this:
  i2c_hid i2c-ELAN1010:00: i2c_hid_get_input: incomplete report (14/65535)
  i2c_hid i2c-ELAN1010:00: i2c_hid_get_input: incomplete report (14/65535)
  i2c_hid i2c-ELAN1010:00: i2c_hid_get_input: incomplete report (14/65535)
  i2c_hid i2c-ELAN1010:00: i2c_hid_get_input: incomplete report (14/65535)
  etc...

This problem did not occur on the previous kernel version so there
must have been a change to the "drivers/hid/i2c-hid/i2c-hid.c" file.
This seems to be fixed in a recent commit here:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/ef6eaf27274c0351f7059163918f3795da13199c

I am currently running the older kernel version but would still like
to be up to date without this flooding happening.
