[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1674838] Re: kernel BUG at /build/linux-7LGLH_/linux-4.10.0/include/linux/swapops.h:129

2017-06-01 Thread Colan Schwartz
Folks, just enable the Proposed channel for the next four days (until
this is released into stable on the 5th). You can disable it again
afterwards. This is what I've been doing, and haven't run into this
issue again (or any other problems with Proposed).

In my case there are no drives involved, just a hub with a camera.

Bug description:
On my laptop the kernel will sometimes drop the USB hub. After this,
the laptop doesn't recognise any device plugged in to the USB ports -
plugging and unplugging any device I've tried into any of the USB
ports produces no response, not even dmesg entries.

Strangely this also applies to bluetooth - it no longer works once USB
has dropped (possibly the module is hung of the bus internally).

Once this has happened only a reboot fixes it; I've not managed to
find any combination of module unload/reload or suspend cycles to
  reinitialise things correctly.

USB stops working after a while

Bug description:
After leaving my workstation for a while, and then returning, my USB
keyboard and USB mouse stop working. Actually, all USB ports stop
  working.

The peripherals are plugged into the USB hub on my monitor. When I
return, and the monitor wakes up, USB is dead. Plugging them into
other USB ports has no effect.

As far as I can tell, the only way to fix this is to reboot. Is there
a better workaround, like removing and reinserting a kernel module? I
tried this with "ahci", but it gives me "Error: Module ahci is in
use". Having to reboot every time is quite bothersome.

Here's what may be useful from the syslog:

I am fairly frequently (maybe once every 2 days) seeing screen
lockups. The system is fine, and then screen locks up. mouse is still
movable and even changes icon based on content under it (ie mouse over

this occurs during a google hangout, and the hangout, audio and mic

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1377153] Re: [System76, Inc. Galago UltraPro] suspend/resume failure

2014-11-11 Thread Colan Schwartz
@Jason: I ran fwts. It worked the first 7 times, and then crashed on
the 8th. So that's 12.5%. That seems about right given my experience.
I can never run the full 50 tests though, as whenever it crashes,
everything locks up.

I'm going to upgrade to 14.10, and see if it's any better, but is sounds
like it isn't given the other report.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1377153] Re: [System76, Inc. Galago UltraPro] suspend/resume failure

2014-10-07 Thread Colan Schwartz
I'm afraid I won't be able to as I need this machine to be stable, but I
can report back here once I upgrade to 14.10 (about a month after it's
released). Thanks.

Title:
USB stops working after a while

Status in System76:
  Triaged
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Here's the top of the most recent logs where things appear to go wrong.
The log data I posted initially is more where things stop working. I'm
going to unplug the hub to see if that solves the problem. And I'll see
if I can test a newer kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1254581] [NEW] USB stops working after a while

2013-11-24 Thread Colan Schwartz
Public bug reported:

After leaving my workstation for a while, and then returning, my USB
keyboard and USB mouse stop working. Actually, all USB ports stop
working.

The peripherals are plugged into the USB hub on my monitor. When I
return, and the monitor wakes up, USB is dead. Plugging them into other
USB ports has no effect.

As far as I can tell, the only way to fix this is to reboot. Is there a
better workaround, like removing and reinserting a kernel module? I
tried this with "ahci", but it gives me "Error: Module ahci is in use".
Having to reboot every time is quite bothersome.

Here's what may be useful from the syslog:

Title:
10ec:8171 wifi network get disconnected periodically -- Realtek
  RTL8191SEvA

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I found a few similar bugs in launchpad history but they are at least
3-4 years old, and I encounter this problem just after upgrade to
  12.04!

I consulted a colleague who is a network expert, he suggested me to
stop using wireless mouse, adjusted router settings, such as changed
channels, added mac address binding, stopped ssid broadcasting, just
in case there are some hackers trying to attack my network, but to no
  avail.

Their are still possibilities of hardware configuration, environment
issues or hackers around my house, but the most strange thing that
triggered me reporting this bug is that all my other devices like
windows laptop, android phones are all OK, only this Ubuntu laptop
  having problem!

I also attach 2 files, one is the output of a ping command so that you
can see what happened (during the ping session I tried to let network
manager reconnect, even if it reconnected, the network is still not
  pingable.

Another file is syslog about the network manager.

Confirming that the workaround in #75 does the trick. Next time this
happens, I'll file a new report as in #76. I'm not sure it it'll work
though, as I have no network then.
