I installed windows 7 on the laptop (long story!) . The keyboard backlight doesn't work on it, too. However, it used to work. It looks like my machine has a hardware defect. Public bug reported: Wifi disconnects every 30 minutes or so. I use Ubuntu 14.10 (the devel version).
