Bug description:
  [Impact]
The display output(DP/HDMI) on the USB type-c hub doesn't work. No display
output device could be found after the monitor is plugged into the hub.

  [Fix]
Intel provide a new patch to fix this issue on ADL platforms.

  [Test]
Verified on ADL platform with different type-c hubs, the display output works.

  [Where problems could occur]
The TCSS_DDI_STATUS register is indexed by tc_port not by the FIA port index.
So, this patch is more like a fix and only affect ADL platforms. And as the
commit log describes, the value is wrong on TC#3/4 ports, so it won't affect
the origin working ports.

Bug description:
My laptop (Ollee L116HTN6SPW) has a Realtek 8821CE WiFi card.
Now at hirsute, this is "supported" in the linux-image-5.11.0-16-generic
kernel, and it works "well" for both WiFi and Bluetooth.
However, this module (driver) causes frequent freezes, randomly but usually
within a few minutes of running (thus very soon after boot): screen display
remains frozen, no response to either keyboard or mouse input. All I can do is
to hold the power button to power off, then reboot.

After reboot, I do not see any crash reports, nor logs about the freeze.
Please let me know if I should try to collect some info, and how.

For now I use the DKMS module/driver from
    https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce
(having blacklisted rtw88_8821ce), and it seems to work perfectly.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
When the ADL-P system connects the external display via TypeC port, it will
hang after unplugging the TypeC connector. The system will never come back
until reboot.

  [Fix]
Intel has released a patch set to fix the TypeC PHY connect/disconnect logic.
The shift for ownership of PHY and power domain will be handled correctly for
ADL-P.

  [Test]
The ADL-P system will no longer freeze and the ownership will shift correctly
after disconnecting the external display connects via TypeC port.

  [Where problem could occur]
It's kind of a big refactor for the i915 TypeC PHY handling logic. Don't know
if there's any problems on older platforms. Targeting only on Unstable and
latest OEM kernel for lower risk.

  == Original Bug Description ==
  [Summary]
The system will hang on after unplug DA310 with external monitor (on-demand)
  Note:
  1. Build-in HDMI port cannot duplicate.
  2. VGA/HDMI/DP on DA310 to system all can duplicate.
  3. Unplug VGA/DP/HDMI from DA310, then unplug DA310 from the system cannot
duplicate.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  1. Install dell-bto-focal-fossa-pypar-adl-X160-20210923-2.iso
  2. Plug DA310 to USB-C port
  3. Plug DP/VGA/HDMI to DA310
  4. Unplug DA310 > The system hangs on with black screen

  [Expected result]
The system works well after unplug USB-C with external monitor

  [Actual result]
The system hangs on blackscreen after unplug DA310 with external monitor

  [Failure rate]
  3/3

System only can reach PC3, and it affects power consumption alot.

  [Fix]
Kaiheng implemented a dynamic ASPM for r8169, it not only fixes the PC state
issue, but also fixes network speed issue.

https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/project/linux-pci/cover/20211007161552.272771-1-kai.heng.f...@canonical.com/

  [Test]
Verified on 2 different systems which has PC state issue and has network
speed issue, these patches fix both issues.

  [Where problems could occur]
It toggles ASPM on and off depends on the network traffic during runtime, I
don't think it'll lead to any regressions. Some potential issues have been
addressed during the patch submitting. It's v6 now and accepted by upstream.

On platforms supported DP tunneling over USB 3.2 or so, a Retimer is
required on the host side to cover insertion loss. On such platforms the
rtimer firmware maybe configured to use LTTPR (Link Training Tunable PHY
Repeater) non-transparent mode only, which is only supported in drm-tip
currently. Without LTTPR support, link training may fail with following
error messages depending on the data path configuration:

i915 :00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun

  [Fix]

  Patchset https://www.spinics.net/lists/intel-gfx/msg248700.html
("drm/i915: Add support for LTTPR non-transparent link training mode")
is required to fix this issue. It has been landed to drm-tip and will
only be merged to mainline in v5.11.

  Patchset https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/76993/ ("Plumb crtc
state to link training code") is included for link training functions
  prototype changes.

  [Test Case]

On Dell OptiPlex and WD19 docking station, use following steps to verify:
  1. disconnect WD19 from OptiPlex, disconnect OptiPlex's power
  2. attach OptiPlex's power cord
  3. attach WD19's power cord
  4. attach DP to WD19
  5. attach WD19 to OptiPlex
  6. boot up and check if boot to GUI directly
  7. `dmesg` and check if aforementioned DRM link training error appears

  [Where problems could occur]

The second patchset pulled for dependency doesn't have too much
effective changes but refactoring some translation functions, so very
  unlikely to have regressions.

For the major part, LTTPR support, when LTTPR is either not detected or
not supported, it will fall back to use transparent mode as it was.
Otherwise, DP Standard recommends to use LTTPR non-transparent mode for
link training, so this should be the right way to have best hardware
  support.

  == original bug description ==

  [Summary]
When the monitor ONLY is connected to the WD19 (DP port) and WD19 is
connected to the type c port than boot the machine, the monitor shows no video
output after loaded i915.

  [Reproduce Steps]
  1. connect power cable of WD19
  2. connect DP cable from monitor to WD19
  3. connect power cable to target system.
  4. connect type c cable from WD19 to target system
  5. boot up

  [Results]
Expected: video output as there is only one monitor connected.
  Actual: No video output.

Title:
Pop sound from build-in speaker during cold boot and resume from S3

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Description]
On a Dell Wyse 5070 ThinClient device with 18.04 installed, during cold boot
and resume from S3, internal speaker will have a noticeable short pop noise.

  [More detail]
There are similar bugs reported indicating it's related to codec powersaving
[1]. On some devices, disable powersaving can workaround it, but the same
workaround does not work on this device.
  [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1821663

  [Experiment]
With Ubuntu 16.04 (4.13 kernel) installed --> NO pop noise
With Ubuntu 16.04.x (4.15 kernel) installed --> pop noise
With Ubuntu 18.04.x (4.15, 5.0 kernel) installed --> pop noise
So I started testing kernels between 4.13 and 4.15, found the issue does not
present before 4.15.0-58 kernel (including 4.15.0-58), and kernel after that
started to have the pop noise.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1866357] Re: Pop sound from build-in speaker during cold boot and resume from S3

2020-03-09 Thread David Chen
Currently I only have info for ubuntu kernel, the issue does not present before
4.15.0-58 kernel (including 4.15.0-58), and kernel after that started to have
the pop noise. I have done some investigation, found the commit below, could
you please help to check if this is one of the many differences between good
and bad kernels that I mentioned?
https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/1098499/

I will see if I can find a better machine to try your steps.
Thanks!

2020-03-09 Thread David Chen
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected bionic

** Description changed:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1845959] Re: QAT drivers for C3XXX and C62X not included as modules

2020-02-27 Thread David Chen
Hi,

I upgraded my kernel to 5.3.0-40.32 and qat_c3xxx caused hung task on my
dm_crypt devices.
I had to workaround by blacklisting qat_c3xxx.

I'm using Supermicro A2SDI-4C-HLN4F with Intel Atom C3558.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The kernel included in Ubuntu is built with the following configuration for
the Intel® QuickAssit drivers:
  CONFIG_CRYPTO_DEV_QAT=m
  CONFIG_CRYPTO_DEV_QAT_DH895xCC=m
  # CONFIG_CRYPTO_DEV_QAT_C3XXX is not set

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1714178] Re: Triple 4K monitor display failed (modesetting driver limited to 8192x8192)

2019-04-03 Thread David Chen
If I understand it correctly, to completely resolve this issue, we will
need mesa + xserver + kernel fix, but currently only mesa fix is in
place, right?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1185927] Re: 8086:0046 [Dell XPS 15 L501x] Unable to change backlight by default

2013-12-04 Thread David Chen
Maybe this is the fix:

--

Title:
8086:0046 [Dell XPS 15 L501x] Unable to change backlight by default

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
While I disabled my nvidia card in BIOS, I am unable to change the
  backlight by default.

  WORKAROUND: Use both kernel parameters:
  acpi_backlight=vendor dell_laptop.backlight=0

Having just 'acpi_backlight=vendor' means that if I quickly and
repeatedly press the key to change brightness, it eventually lowers,
but sometimes the down key makes it higher and visa versa, making it
difficult to change. Adding 'dell_laptop.backlight=0' makes the
controls work perfectly normally. But when I boot, I get the message:
dell_laptop: '0' invalid parameter for 'backlight', at which my
computer then continues to boot and works normally, with the
  brightness control working.
