[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1691600] [NEW] oops on 4.4.0-66-generic

2017-05-17 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

My long running (year old) Ubuntu 16.04 AWS instance got wedged sometime
yesterday. I was able to (barely) log in, but I found a system load of
248 (on a single core system), and it was basically unusable.

After a reboot, I inspected the logs around the time at which it stopped
reporting to Landscape and I found a kernel trace (attached).

Note, that I am running canonical-livepatch.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Attachment added: "syslog.2.gz"

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1627909] Re: zfs-linux should be using python3 for python userspace tools

2016-09-27 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Elevating priority to "critical", as this is blocking zfs from landing
in the default Ubuntu Server seed. Adding a task for Xenial, and
marking this bug for SRU, as we want to bring this back to 16.04 as
well. Thanks!

Bug description:
  SRU REQUEST, Xenial

  [IMPACT]
dbufstat.py arc_summary.py arcstat.py should be using python3 rather than the
older python2

  [Test case]
running these ZFS helper tools should run with w/o python2 installed (and
instead work with python3)

  [Regression potential]
These helper scripts for checking ZFS state won't work if we regress. However
it will not affect overall ZFS per se as these scripts are useful utilities and
not part of the core ZFS functionality. Risk to ZFS core functionality on this
SRU is therefore zero.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1532198] Re: [MIR] zfs-linux

2016-05-05 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Bump?

Title:
  [MIR] zfs-linux

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Following the process documented at
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess , the following template
needs to be filled in to start the MIR for zfs-linux in 16.04

Below are my answers to the various main inclusion requirements,
  marked by a * prefix:

  [Availability]:

"The package must already be in the Ubuntu universe, and must
build for the architectures it is designed to work on."

* http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/admin/zfsutils-linux
* Yes - built for 64 bit arches only, because ZFS is designed to run
well only on 64 bit architectures.

  [Rationale]:

"There must be a certain level of demand for the package, for example:
The package is useful for a large part of our user base."

* Yes - there is a lot of interest in ZFS in the server space and for
users wanting to use a file system that supports huge collections of
disks with excellent reliable features such as checksummed raid,
mirroring
striping with easy configuration and also simple data sanity checking and
  fixing.
* Being requested by Kiko

"The package is a new build dependency or dependency of a package that we
already support (additionally, the official image builder requires all
used packages be in main)."

* Yes, already in Wily as a technology demo.

"The package helps meet a specific Blueprint goal."

* No blueprint goal.

"The package replaces another package we currently support and promises
higher quality and/or better features, so that we can drop the old
package from the supported set."

* Not applicable

  [Security]:
"The security history and the current state of security issues in
the package must allow us to support the package for at least 18 months
without exposing its users to an inappropriate level of security risks.
This requires checking of several things that are explained in detail in
the subsection Security checks."

"Check how many vulnerabilities the package had in the past and how they
were handled by upstream and the Debian/Ubuntu package:"

"http://cve.mitre.org/cve/cve.html: Search in the National Vulnerability
Database using the package as a keyword"

NO ZFS Linux CVEs found, here is the complete list from Mitre:

  CVE-2015-1415
The bsdinstall installer in FreeBSD 10.x before 10.1 p9, when configuring
full disk encrypted ZFS, uses world-readable permissions for the GELI
keyfile (/boot/encryption.key), which allows local users to obtain sensitive
key information by reading the file.

  CVE-2015-0448
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Sun Solaris 11.2 allows local users to
affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via vectors related to
ZFS File system.

  CVE-2013-3266
The nfsrvd_readdir function in sys/fs/nfsserver/nfs_nfsdport.c in the new
NFS server in FreeBSD 8.0 through 9.1-RELEASE-p3 does not verify that a
READDIR request is for a directory node, which allows remote attackers to
cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary
code by specifying a plain file instead of a directory.

  CVE-2011-2313
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 10 allows local users to affect
availability, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2011-2312
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 10 allows local users to affect
confidentiality, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2011-2311
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 10 allows local users to affect
availability, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2011-2286
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 10 and 11 Express allows remote
authenticated users to affect availability, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2010-4458
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 11 Express allows local users
to affect availability, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2010-3540
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris allows local
users to affect availability, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2010-2392
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris allows local
users to affect integrity and availability, related to ZFS.

  CVE-2010-0318
The replay functionality for ZFS Intent Log (ZIL) in FreeBSD 7.1, 7.2,
and 8.0, when creating files during replay of a setattr transaction, uses
permissions instead of the original permissions, which might allow
local users to read or modify unauthorized files in opportunistic
circumstances after a system crash or power failure.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1438510] [NEW] [REGRESSION] bluetooth headset no longer supports a2dp

2015-03-30 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

Just installed 15.04 fresh from the latest ISO (beta2).

I'm bummed to see my bluetooth headset (Bose Soundlink overear) seems to
have regressed in functionality.

In 14.10, I was able to set the output profile either to a2dp or hsp/hfp
(telephony duplex).

In 15.04, it only works in telephony duplex mode. I can't get high
fidelity sound playback to work at all.

This thread seems to be related, though the workaround within did not solve the
problem for me:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1243636] Re: ecryptfs corrupts files over 4GB size on i686

Title:
ecryptfs corrupts files over 4GB size on i686

Status in eCryptfs:
  Fix Released
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

Commit 24d15266bd86b7961f309a962fa3aa177a78c49f introduced a data corruption
regression on 32 bit architectures when writing past the 4 GB.

  [Impact]

32 bit users experience corruption of large files.

  [Fix]

A cast is needed when shifting the page's index. Colin and I independently
identified the problem. It is a simple fix that has been merged upstream:

  http://git.kernel.org/linus/43b7c6c6a4e3916edd186ceb61be0c67d1e0969e

  [Test Case]

Inside of an eCryptfs mount on an i686 Ubuntu install, create a file
containing
4 GB + 1 page worth (4096 bytes) of zeros. Then inspect the file for non-zero
  bytes.

  $ rm zeros
  $ dd if=/dev/zero of=zeros bs=4096 count=$((4*1024*1024*1024/4096+4096))
  1052672+0 records in
  1052672+0 records out
  4311744512 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 226.133 s, 19.1 MB/s
  $ hexdump -C zeros
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  ||
  *
  10100

The hexdump output should show all zeros. A non patched kernel will show
  non-zero bytes.

  [Original Bug Report]

on extracting files with extracted size >4 GB files are getting currupted.
interestingly file gets currupted in the very moment the file size gets more
than 4GB.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1366023] [NEW] USB broken on Intel NUC (Ivy Bridge D53427RKE / BOXDC53427HYE) with Utopic Kernel

2014-09-05 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

This bug is likely related, or at least has the same root cause as Bug
#1350480, which specifically is affecting Trusty.

I installed yesterday's daily Utopic build (and applied all updates) to
an Intel NUC, which has worked very well for me with 13.10 and 14.04
(except Bug #1350480).

There are lots of different NUCs out there. This one, in particularly
is an Ivy Bridge D53427RKE / BOXDC53427HYE with i5-3427U CPU. It also
has 16GB of RAM, a 120GB Kingston mSATA SSD, a 2TB USB3 Western Digital
external hard drive, a USB3 Ethernet adapter, and a USB keyboard/mouse.

The installation completed successfully, but subsequent reboots rendered
this machine unusable. The USB/Keyboard and mouse were not usable in
the OS (though perfectly functional in BIOS). The USB Ethernet dongle
was not usable. The USB hard drive was not visible.

Note that the test kernel provided at
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1350480/ fixed all of these
issues.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1350480] [NEW] [REGRESSION] Kernel update renders Intel NUC (i5-3427) unbootable with USB devices plugged in

2014-07-30 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

The latest kernel update in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (3.13.0-32.57) renders our
Intel NUCs unbootable, when we cold boot and have USB devices (keyboard,
mouse, USB/Ethernet adapter) connected.

The 3.13.0-24.47 kernel does not exhibit this behavior.

Our particular NUCs have the i5-3427U processor, which is the D53427RKE
board (DC53427HYE kit).

Title:
[REGRESSION] Kernel update renders Intel NUC (i5-3427) unbootable with
  USB devices plugged in

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The latest kernel update in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (3.13.0-32.57) renders
our Intel NUCs unbootable, when we cold boot and have USB devices
  (keyboard, mouse, USB/Ethernet adapter) connected.

The 3.13.0-24.47 kernel does not exhibit this behavior.

Our particular NUCs have the i5-3427U processor, which is the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331150] Re: arp fails to update, 3.13.0-{24, 29}

2014-06-17 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Kamal suggests that this upstream kernel commit *might* be related to
this issue:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/linux.git;a=commitdiff;h=d85f62f554904c778bd4d0eb1eb2b629753771b2

Completely untested. Just FYI.

Title:
  arp fails to update, 3.13.0-{24,29}

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
in an AWS environment managed by BOSH, we saw tcp connectivity
  problems between pairs of VMs.

VM A and VM B are up, running ubuntu 14.04-based images, and in the
  same vpc subnet.

VM B is terminated, and another VM is created that uses the IP address
  from VM B

The new VM tries to make a tcp connection to VM A. In some cases, the
  connection fails.

Investigation reveals that VM A has the old MAC address in its
neighbor list. In some cases, running arp -d on VM A
"fixes the problem". Also in some cases, running arping in gratuitous
arp mode on the new VM also fixes the problem.

The problem does not occur if VM A is running an ubuntu 10.04-based
  image.

The problem seems to occur only on machines with lots of tcp
  connection traffic between them.

'arp -d' and arping on the new VM do not seem to "fix" the problem if
there are processes on the VMs that are trying to create new TCP
  connections.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1210393] Re: MAAS ipmi fails on OCPv3 Roadrunner

2014-02-20 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Hey Jason! Thanks!

Could you please re-assign this bug, then, to Samantha or Rod? And
Samantha/Rod, could you please update the status (in-progress) when
you're working on it?

That helps those of us here watching/waiting for this work to complete
:-)

Thanks!
Dustin

Title:
MAAS ipmi fails on OCPv3 Roadrunner

Status in MAAS:
  In Progress
Status in Open Compute Project:
  Confirmed
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “linux” source package in Saucy:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The OCPv3 Roadrunner machine has been fully enabled and passes
certification testing. When testing ipmitool locally I'm able to
setup the BMC and users, etc.

When using MAAS, MAAS is able to setup the BMC network information (I
see that it changes that), but it appears to fail to set a username
and password. If I try to use the username and password as defined in
the MAAS GUI, it fails. Therefore commissioning and juju
bootstrapping the node has to be done manually (by physically pushing
  the power button).

If I use the username/password I've set on the BMC I can see that MAAS
fails to set the username 'maas' and the password as defined in the
  MAAS gui.

Since the commissioning/enlisting process is temporary and I'm not
sure how to login to this phase to gather data, troubleshooting tips
  are welcome.
