I'm also suffering from this same problem. Just tested with 4.7-rc6 (released today), and the problem has been resolved. (There are other issues I'm experiencing with this kernel, so I will boot back to 4.4) @Stephen, installing another kernel alongside your existing one is rather easy, and does not require wiping your computer or a fresh install. I followed the guide here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show=KernelMainlineBuilds#Installing_upstream_kernels_.28manually.29, and then when I rebooted my computer, chose advanced options for Ubuntu, and chose the kernel I wanted. Issue does not exist with a wired headset. This issue does not exist with 15.10. All updates have been installed on 16.04 including backports but they have not fixed the issue. It is not browser specific and not website specific. It is not hardware specific as it affects my laptop with an intel 7260 card and my pc with an intel 8260 card. The issue exists on both ubuntu and kubuntu 16.04. I have reported it on the ubuntu support forums and after investigation a moderator noticed changed in the kernel from 4.4 and 4.2 that may becausing the issue and asked me to file a bug report. I just installed a fresh install of 13.10 on this machine, and the problem persisted. However, changing my GRUB settings to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_osi=Linux now allows me to adjust the brightness, although at boot, it's set to 0. (I'll look into that problem seperately). Is there any reason I should not use acpi_osi=Linux? I've read it could have ill effect, namely on the fans. Can I test this somehow? Christopher M. Penalver, thanks for your clear instructions. I tested with linux-image-3.12.0-031200rc6-generic, and this problem persists. I also found that when booting the machine, I can adjust the brightness when GRUB2 is loaded, and then when I boot into Ubuntu, I'm stuck at whatever brightness level I had in GRUB2.
