[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813620] Re: Xorg indefinitely hangs in kernelspace at least 2-3 times a day
I found that the latest drm-tip kernel for amd64 was at https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-tip/2019-11-08/ as the more recent ones had failed to compile according to the READMEs. The 2019-11-08 kernel (5.4.0-994-generic) boots fine, but after logging in, running a GUI application and some clicks the screen goes black, and the kernel logs this: [ 24.557334] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 24.558380] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 24.559604] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (48, 1, 4096, -12) [ 24.561124] [drm:qxl_alloc_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 24.832000] [TTM] Buffer eviction failed [ 24.832011] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x0001) [ 24.832029] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 24.832170] [TTM] Buffer eviction failed [ 24.832174] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x0001) [ 24.832178] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 24.832226] [TTM] Buffer eviction failed [ 24.832229] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x0001) [ 24.832231] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 24.832400] [TTM] Buffer eviction failed [ 24.832404] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x0001) [ 24.832407] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 24.834433] [TTM] Buffer eviction failed [ 24.834437] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x0001) [ 24.834440] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.302729] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.303803] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.305162] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.355703] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.356727] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.358251] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.419575] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.421420] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.422819] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.438340] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.439412] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.441711] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.445922] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.446973] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (16384, 0x0001) [ 25.448748] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (16384, 1, 4096, -12) [ 25.450842] [drm:qxl_alloc_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 25.452379] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.453410] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (16384, 0x0001) [ 25.454580] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (16384, 1, 4096, -12) [ 25.456191] [drm:qxl_alloc_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 25.458033] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.459076] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (16384, 0x0001) [ 25.460748] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (16384, 1, 4096, -12) [ 25.464277] [drm:qxl_alloc_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 25.466437] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.467323] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (16384, 0x0001) [ 25.468465] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (16384, 1, 4096, -12) [ 25.470252] [drm:qxl_alloc_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 25.477931] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.478706] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (3149824, 0x0002) [ 25.480124] [drm:qxl_gem_object_create [qxl]] *ERROR* Failed to allocate GEM object (3149824, 2, 4096, -12) [ 25.483215] [drm:qxl_alloc_surf_ioctl [qxl]] *ERROR* qxl_alloc_surf_ioctl: failed to create gem ret=-12 [ 25.486972] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.486975] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.486978] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.487020] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.487022] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.487024] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.488495] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.488499] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.488502] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.489683] [TTM] Out of kernel memory [ 25.489685] qxl :00:02.0: object_init failed for (4096, 0x0001) [ 25.489687] [drm:qxl_alloc_bo_reserved [qxl]] *ERROR* failed to allocate VRAM BO [ 25.598292]
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813620] Re: Xorg indefinitely hangs in kernelspace at least 2-3 times a day
Reported by e-mail to recipients listed in comment 6. Here's a link to the post in the archive of the Linux Foundation virtualization mailing list: https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/virtualization/2019-August/043083.html -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813620 Title: Xorg indefinitely hangs in kernelspace at least 2-3 times a day Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The graphical environment seems to hang when scrolling web pages in Firefox. Can't reliably reproduce during every scrolling, but it has happened at least 5 times in the past 7 days. Happens in Kubuntu VM-s running under KVM and QEMU (3.1.0) on multiple host machines. This issue only started to happen sometime this month. First these VM-s were running 18.04 so I was hoping that updating them to 18.10 would help, but it didn't. I'm guessing that some kernel update for both bionic and cosmic causes this. Since this bug causes the graphical environment to become totally unresponsive, this has already already cost me some lost data, but very fortunately not much. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813620] Re: Xorg indefinitely hangs in kernelspace at least 2-3 times a day
Sorry for the spam. I'm not used to those Ubuntu bug reporting tools. I've been running 5.2.0-050200rc1-generic ever since the suggestion to try the mainline RC. This bug did not re-occur until now. Here is a new dmesg. ** Attachment added: "Output of "dmesg" after the hang with mainline 5.2.0-050200rc1-generic" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1813620/+attachment/5281285/+files/dmesg.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813620 Title: Xorg indefinitely hangs in kernelspace at least 2-3 times a day Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The graphical environment seems to hang when scrolling web pages in Firefox. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813620] Re: Xorg indefinitely hangs in kernelspace during scrolling a web page in Firefox
This still occurs with 19.04 (Disco Dingo) and kernel 5.0.0-13-generic, and does not seem to be Firefox specific. I've also had this crash when using some KDE apps. This issue seems to occurs at 2-3 times a day on frequent use, each time requiring a forced reboot to fix (because Ubuntu never reboots gracefully when Xorg is hanging in kernelspace). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1412671] Re: [14.04] Boot stuck in Starting configuring network devices after upgrade
Ok, nevermind. This seems to be another issue. Namely for some reason /home fails to mount at boot for some reason: The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1412671] Re: [14.04] Boot stuck in Starting configuring network devices after upgrade
The users complained that the issue re-occurred today. I remotely upgraded the system yesterday (apt-get dist-upgrade), so its very likely something in the upgrade process broke the system again. They will transport me the machine today, so I will have physical access. If we don't manage to fix it today, I'll probably switch it do Debian or back to 12.04. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1412671 Title: [14.04] Boot stuck in Starting configuring network devices after upgrade Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: One of these upgrades yesterday resulted in an unbootable system: 2015-01-19 20:32:45 upgrade libc-dev-bin:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:47 upgrade libc6-dev:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:48 upgrade libc6-dbg:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:50 upgrade libc-bin:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:53 upgrade libc6:i386 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:56 upgrade libc6:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:33:05 upgrade libclutter-gtk-1.0-0:amd64 1.4.4-3ubuntu2 1.4.4-3ubuntu2.2 2015-01-19 20:33:06 upgrade libssh-4:amd64 0.6.1-0ubuntu3 0.6.1-0ubuntu3.1 2015-01-19 20:33:07 upgrade multiarch-support:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:33:10 upgrade libcgmanager0:i386 0.24-0ubuntu7.1 0.24-0ubuntu7.2 2015-01-19 20:33:11 upgrade libcgmanager0:amd64 0.24-0ubuntu7.1 0.24-0ubuntu7.2 2015-01-19 20:33:12 upgrade linux-firmware:all 1.127.10 1.127.11 I'm unable to debug this any further because the desktop system is in another part of the country. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1412671] Re: [14.04] Boot stuck in Starting configuring network devices after upgrade
I tried several reboots and several shutdowns all of which succeeded. The issues started on January 20, after the system updates on January 19. I don't know how the Ubuntu startup system (Upstart) works, but my guess is that one of those updates caused the race, and a subsequent update caused the race to disappear. Maybe some of those updates cause upstart service/task dependencies to be recalculated/cached, and this failed on January 19 (causing the unbootable system). A subsequent update may have attempted the same and succeeded, fixing the boot. Have we eliminated this possibilty so that the resolution to mark this bug report as Fix Released is valid? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1412671 Title: [14.04] Boot stuck in Starting configuring network devices after upgrade Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: One of these upgrades yesterday resulted in an unbootable system: 2015-01-19 20:32:45 upgrade libc-dev-bin:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:47 upgrade libc6-dev:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:48 upgrade libc6-dbg:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:50 upgrade libc-bin:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:53 upgrade libc6:i386 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:32:56 upgrade libc6:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:33:05 upgrade libclutter-gtk-1.0-0:amd64 1.4.4-3ubuntu2 1.4.4-3ubuntu2.2 2015-01-19 20:33:06 upgrade libssh-4:amd64 0.6.1-0ubuntu3 0.6.1-0ubuntu3.1 2015-01-19 20:33:07 upgrade multiarch-support:amd64 2.19-0ubuntu6.4 2.19-0ubuntu6.5 2015-01-19 20:33:10 upgrade libcgmanager0:i386 0.24-0ubuntu7.1 0.24-0ubuntu7.2 2015-01-19 20:33:11 upgrade libcgmanager0:amd64 0.24-0ubuntu7.1 0.24-0ubuntu7.2 2015-01-19 20:33:12 upgrade linux-firmware:all 1.127.10 1.127.11 I'm unable to debug this any further because the desktop system is in another part of the country. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1415154] Re: Intel graphics related problems
The release notes of 0149 do not state any significant fixes which could be related. Since this is a physically remote desktop machine I'm administering, I don't have physical access to the machine before February 4rd. The main user of the machine is a non-technical person and has become very discontent and seriously considering switching to Windows (There were no such issues on their older hardware and Kubuntu 12.04). In fact the current 14.04 installation is so broken (this machine also experiences https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1412671) that I had to instruct the user not to log out / reboot / shut down / switch terminals / unplug the monitor / lock the KDE session. ;( Can you propose any workarounds?
