[Kernel-packages] [Bug 763052] Re: Ubuntu can't boot on nvidia GeForce GT240 with nouveau drivers

2014-03-19 Thread John Kuang
FWIW, xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.9-2ubuntu1 as found in 13.10
still has this exact same problem.

Status in Accelerated Xorg driver for nVidia cards:
  New
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Status in Fedora:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I can't boot Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC with NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 (PCIe 16x).
Instead login screen I see [attachment DSC00391.JPG].
  Ctrl+Alt+Del and SysRq+B don't work.

Why Ubuntu use experimental (nouveau) driver?!? :
  xserver-xorg-video-nouveau - X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver
(experimental)

  WORKAROUND:
I must install Ubuntu from alternate CD and boot to text mode and uninstall
these packages: nouveau-firmware, xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and install
nvidia-current package.

WORKAROUND: Try boot live cd with nomodeset option. It works for me
  on GeForce GT 240.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 379873] Re: CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor reports incorrect CPU speeds when overclocked

2013-12-17 Thread John Kuang
I can confirm this bug is still exactly as described in 13.04. I may not
have the latest kernel, but nothing has changed since the last activity
in 2011, so this definitely is still a confirmed bug.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)

Title:
CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor reports incorrect CPU speeds when
  overclocked

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The reported frequencies of an overclocked Core 2 Duo are incorrect.
Benchmarking and performance testing can confirm that the CPU is
running at the overclocked speeds, but the values reported through
cpuinfo are the standard stock speeds.

CPU has been overclocked from stock 3.00GHz to 3.60GHz. This can be
confirmed through dmidecode (output attached). The issue is that
cpuinfo (and related utilities) all report the stock CPU speeds
instead. This is only a visual/reporting issue. The CPU is still
throttling correctly, and the speed is correct as per the overclocking
  ratio.

i.e. (tested and confirmed in benchmarks Bogomips)
  Reported 2.00Ghz = (3.6/3.0 * 2.0) = 2.40GHz True Clock Speed
  Reported 3.00Ghz = (3.6/3.0 * 3.0) = 3.60GHz True Clock Speed

There are a few reports of this in the Ubuntu forums, however no
resolution had been found. I have updated the BIOS on my motherboard
(ASUS P5Q) to the latest available, with no changes. All other BIOS
options are per standard - allowing CPU throttling/etc.

Bug #132403 makes reference to this similar issue, but this is not a
BIOS problem, only a reporting problem.

  Compare:
  cat /proc/cpuinfo
  cpufreq-info
  dmidecode --type processor

Only dmidecode is reporting the correct CPU speed as set in the BIOS.

  Regards,
  Robert.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1261851] [NEW] CPU frequency reported incorrectly after overclocking

2013-12-17 Thread John Kuang
Public bug reported:

Bug #379873 for my hardware: Intel E3300 on Gigabyte EP45-UD3L.

The stock speed of Intel E3300 is 2.5 GHz (200*12.5). I had pushed the
FSB from 200 MHz to 300 MHz in the BIOS, giving 3.75 GHz (300*12.5).
However, cat /proc/cpuinfo and cpufreq-info incorrectly shows 3.33,
2.67, 2.13, 1.6 GHz, which are probably based on 266 MHz FSB
(266*12.5=3.33, 266*10=2.67, 266*8=2.13, 266*6=1.6).

dmidecode --type processor shows it at 3.75 GHz all the time, no
matter which frequency or governor was selected in CPU Frequency Scaling
Monitor.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1261851] Re: [Gigabyte EP45-UD3L] CPU frequency reported incorrectly after overclocking

2013-12-17 Thread John Kuang
Unfortunately I can't run a Live USB as they don't work. My system seems
to need the nvidia drivers; it crashes after booting with the nouveau
driver. Should I still bother to test with a mainline kernel? Your
instructions are not too clear as to exactly which version I should use.

I can only test it if there is a way to pre-install the nvidia drivers
into a Live USB. I can't upgrade my permanent raring installation as it
is my main working system.

Title:
[Gigabyte EP45-UD3L] CPU frequency reported incorrectly after
  overclocking

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The stock speed of Intel E3300 is 2.5 GHz (200*12.5). I had pushed the
FSB from 200 MHz to 300 MHz in the BIOS, giving 3.75 GHz (300*12.5).
However, cat /proc/cpuinfo and cpufreq-info incorrectly shows
3.33, 2.67, 2.13, 1.6 GHz, which are probably based on 266 MHz FSB
  (266*12.5=3.33, 266*10=2.67, 266*8=2.13, 266*6=1.6).

dmidecode --type processor shows it at 3.75 GHz all the time, no
matter which frequency or governor was selected in CPU Frequency
  Scaling Monitor.
