be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

While I did have this problem originally, the kernel upgrades since then
have not shown this issue for me. I have been running the lowlatency
kernel 3.13.0-24-lowlatency since before release on two machines and the
generic version on two more with no problems. So I no longer have a
broken machine to test against (do A/B testing).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-04-11 Thread Len Ovens
This vanished and then seems to have come back on the last ISO I tried. Looking
around at the log files in /var/log I can only find the line:
BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730
in kern.log and it only seems to happen right at boot, but the error reporter
seems to come up much more often. Almost like the log file gets scanned more
than once. My current kern.log has three of these lines in it, for three boots,
but I had at least three time the error window came up on each boot. It is much
less of a deal if it only happens once a boot rather than 3 or 4 times at it
seemed. Am I missing something?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-04-11 Thread Len Ovens
This happens at login. It is something to do with the nvidia driver
(304.117) because when I switch to Nouveau the problem goes away. I can
reboot or logout/in and there is no problem.

I do not know if it is the nvidia driver itself, or something it
touches.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-03-24 Thread Len Ovens
I installed the 32 bit version
image-3.13.0-19-generic_3.13.0-19.39~lp1294729_i386 and files and the
same problem shows up. So that is not the problem. It would not allow me
to send a bug report as this is not an official package :)

The linux-tools-* package had to have --force-depends to install as it
depends on another *-tools-* package.

If there are file you would like attached from this boot let me know.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-03-24 Thread Len Ovens
Ok, I will do that (the /var/crash files on that disk do show the
generic kernel with the bug number), but first... I realize it seems
from the top of the page that I am the only one this is affecting. SO I
am looking at what I may be doing different. The main thing is that I
have been using a USB drive as my test drive. So I downloaded the latest
ISO and reistalled on one of the system partitions to see if running the
test kernel you made still has problems with no USB-disk use. As if to
confirm my guess, I got several kernel oops falts while writing the ISO
to the USB stick. I have not had any problems on the new install so far,
but this is another kernel too. I will be back with test results
shortly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-03-24 Thread Len Ovens
Ok, I installed the test kernel set from your directory (I don't seem to
be able to get -18) And from a system installed on an internal hard
drive I do not get any errors at all. I did a file system check/repair
from gparted on the external USB drive with no problems. I reinstalled
the same ISO on the same USB stick while accessing as many things on the
external drive as possible... still no problems. So there is a link
between running the system on an external USB drive (or at least this
one) and this error. I will now reboot to the external partition and
select your bug kernel to make sure the problem is still there.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-03-24 Thread Len Ovens
Wonderful... (no not really) The problem has vanished on any drive, any
kernel. I am back up on the original install with the first kernel that
caused the problem 15min. running... doing all those lowlatency things I
was testing in the first place. No errors at all. My own conclusion is
that there was a write error that didn't get caught and running a disk
check fixed the problem... I don't know the system well enough to be
able to tell if the error could be a disk access of some sort, but the
problem is gone.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

On Thu, 20 Mar 2014, Joseph Salisbury wrote:

If you reboot again, does the error again start happening, or was it
just after the first reboot back into 3.13.0-18?

Yes it keeps happening. Not just after boot, (every boot) but as long as
the system is up the error keeps showing up, one box on top of the other
if I don't deal with them.

Then if I boot to the old kernel I get whatever errors I haven't dealt
with till I clean them out right after boot. I can tell they are from the
new kernel because that is the package the bug is for. After I clean out
all the old reports I can boot and reboot the old kernel with no problems.
but as soon as I boot the new kernel (-18) the problem shows up again.

Not sure if that makes sense.

Can you attach /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to the bug report. We're seeing

It occures to me that I may have been testing kernel latency as the -17
version seemed worse than 13.10 had been. That is pulse-jackd bridge may
have been running with jackd set to -p64 (2.67 ms as jackd reports) which
is below the latency most Intel HDA setups are able to handle (-p128 is
the normal lower limit). There were certainly xruns as this is at the edge
of where things work with hyperthreading turned on. (hyperthreading off
gives sub ms latency)

All reboots since then have not had jackd started and still had kernel
errors.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This

introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.
If this is a regression, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the
 commit that introduced the problem.

Yes it happened as soon as I rebooted after upgrading. The fresh install
would have been vmlinuz-3.13.0-17-lowlatency There was no problem there.
(the date stamp being mar 15) The upgrade installed
vmlinuz-3.13.0-18-lowlatency. These are the only kernels in /boot/

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1294729] Re: BUG: pcmC1D0c:0, pos = 5461, buffer size = 5461, period size = 2730

2014-03-19 Thread Len Ovens
Booted old kernel (1.13.0-17), ran about 30 min with no problem. Booted
back to 1.13.0-18 and got same problem in about the same time it took to
fire up firefox. Second error report almost before cancelling the first.
Now it seems to be doing fine typing this and running you tube video.
Seems just right after login.
