There is already zram-config in Ubuntu, a package to enable compressed

Starting with kernel 3.8 zram (a rewrite of older compcache) is out of
staging. Please enable it by default.

  See also:
  http://www.webupd8.org//2011/10/increased-performance-in-linux-with.html
  https://launchpad.net/~shnatsel/+archive/zram

  === Original description ===

Including compcache by default can have a number of benefits for the
average, and not so average, Ubuntu user.

For the average user, compcache will decrease disk swapping, which
will increase perceived performance and decrease hits, which for
laptop users will improve battery life. Since many users use laptops
and netbooks these days, this is a big audience and would make many
people happy. Desktop users will also benefit, as their disks will be
less active and their electric bills may go down a tiny bit.

For the not-so-average user, such as those that run virtualization,
they can run more VMs. With Ubuntu striving to be bigger in the server
space, this could be a big deal. For me, I (unfortunately) run Windows
in KVM, and it appears that enabling compcache improves my VM's
  performance.

Embedded devices and netbooks (such as those that run Ubuntu Netbook
Remix) will benefit, as they have little RAM, and since compcache sort
of increases RAM, it will make these devices more capable.

Since compcache is already in the Ubuntu kernel (see bug 200765), the
only thing left is to either add an initramfs script or a udev script
(IMHO, the udev approach is cleaner) as described here:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Compcache

  compcache: http://code.google.com/p/compcache/

Bug description:
  I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on a new MacBook Pro (Late 2013, 13-inch
Haswell retina). The speakers did not work after installation, and
after I fixed it, it would not work after suspend. It turns out some
of the flags were not set correctly. I can fix these problems but it
would be nice to have them fixed at installation.

The problem can be seen in the GPIO section in
/proc/asound/card1/codec#0 (card0 is for HDMI). After boot, the GPIO
  flags for IO[0] were

  GPIO: io=6, o=2, i=0, unsolicited=1, wake=1
IO[0]: enable=1, dir=1, wake=0, sticky=0, data=0, unsol=0

If data were set to 1, sound would work! I fixed this by installing
  alsa-tools and adding to /etc/rc.local a line:

  hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_data 1

After resuming from suspend, the GPIO flags for IO[0] became

  GPIO: io=6, o=2, i=0, unsolicited=1, wake=1
IO[0]: enable=0, dir=0, wake=0, sticky=0, data=0, unsol=0

Here, three flags were set to 0. I fixed this by adding to
  /etc/pm/sleep.d/99_myfix a few lines:

  #!/bin/sh
  case "$1" in
resume|thaw)
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_mask 1
sleep 1
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_direction 1
sleep 1
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_data 1

rebooted. The system tells me I am missing the OS. Then from BIOS menu
F9 I could manually boot via EFI and got the system working. However I
could not change bios settings such that the system would boot
automatically via UEFI. After long trial and error with advice from
several IRC colleagues I somehow managed to get the system boot via
BIOS. But it seems that changes that are done to boot order, do not
  stay permanent.

I was told that my boot firmware "assumes that a drive without a "boot flag"
on any of its primary partitions

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 381059] Re: use zram-config by default

Title:

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:

Status in zram-config package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
There is already zram-config in Ubuntu, a package to enable compressed
  RAM swap: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zram-config

Starting with kernel 3.8 zram (a rewrite of older compcache) is out of
staging. Please enable it by default.

  See also:
  http://www.webupd8.org//2011/10/increased-performance-in-linux-with.html
  https://launchpad.net/~shnatsel/+archive/zram

  === Original description ===

  Thanks!

The suffix of hostname is too long and makes ubiqutiy automatic installation

In automation installtion, ubiquity uses product name from BIOS as hostname
suffix by
parsing dmidecode output, but if a SMBIOS version is large thatn the version

Title:
strange warning about video mode on boot

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Hello!

I've recently updated to grub2 (by installing grub-pc) and I noticed
  something new and strange.

In the previous version of grub, I used “# defoptions=vga=0x37d” in
/boot/grub/menu.lst to set the video mode. I'm using an nVidia card
and this causes 1920x1200 to be used (in 32 bits I think), which is
the native resolution of my flat panel. This didn't get passed on
automatically to grub2, so I added it in /etc/default/grub under
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. With this setting the boot process is
  started in the correct resolution.

However, right after the GRUB screen goes away, before anything else
is displayed, I see the following warning for a second or so at the
  top of the screen:

vga=0x37d is deprecated. Mode 893 isn't recognized. Use set
  gfxpayload=WIDTHxHEIGHT[xDEPTH] before linux command instead.

I'm not sure if it's grub or the linux kernel that displays this
message. I'll investigate a bit more.

Bug description:
I am using the Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit beta, but this problem also
occurred in 11.10. Alsa version appears to be 1.0.25-1

Whenever I plug in my USB headset (Logitech Premium Notebook Headset
980445-0403) sound continues to play through my speakers and does not
  switch over to the headset.

WORKAROUND: I must manually open sound settings and select the USB
Headset for both output and input before it switches over to it. In
addition, the output volume of the USB headset is set to 0 and must be
increased for any sound to be heard.

Bug description:
  I installed Ubuntu 13.10 on a new MacBook Pro (Late 2013, 13-inch
Haswell retina). The speakers did not work after installation, and
after I fixed it, it would not work after suspend. It turns out some
of the flags were not set correctly. I can fix these problems but it
would be nice to have them fixed at installation.

The problem can be seen in the GPIO section in
/proc/asound/card1/codec#0 (card0 is for HDMI). After boot, the GPIO
  flags for IO[0] were

  GPIO: io=6, o=2, i=0, unsolicited=1, wake=1
IO[0]: enable=1, dir=1, wake=0, sticky=0, data=0, unsol=0

If data were set to 1, sound would work! I fixed this by installing
  alsa-tools and adding to /etc/rc.local a line:

  hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_data 1

After resuming from suspend, the GPIO flags for IO[0] became

  GPIO: io=6, o=2, i=0, unsolicited=1, wake=1
IO[0]: enable=0, dir=0, wake=0, sticky=0, data=0, unsol=0

Here, three flags were set to 0. I fixed this by adding to
  /etc/pm/sleep.d/99_myfix a few lines:

  #!/bin/sh
  case "$1" in
resume|thaw)
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_mask 1
sleep 1
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_direction 1
sleep 1
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x1 set_gpio_data 1

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 beta on my HP Elitebook Folio laptop. Fresh
install, complete hard disk formatted. After successful installation I

I was told that my boot firmware "assumes that a drive without a "boot flag"
on any of its primary partitions
in its msdos label cannot be booted via BIOS (again, only true with Windows).

Title:
Built in speakers do not work on iMac 14,2

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Xubuntu 14.04 on iMac 14,2 no sound from internal speakers. Loud and clear
using OSX 10.9.4. Also tried installing Lubuntu (no sound at all) Linux Mint 16
& 17 and Ubuntu 13.04, 13.10 (same problem as Xubuntu).
Have all PulseAudio utils installed, all devices are listed but only analogue
volume meter shows outputs when playing but as above nothing from speakers.
  AlsaMixer shows S/PDIF (highlighted), SPDIF 1 & S/PDIF 2 not MM, set at 00
but cannot be adjusted.

To get the headphones to work I upgraded to the daily ALSA snapshot
  found here: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-
  dev/+archive/ubuntu/alsa-daily/+packages

The output of alsa-info.sh is here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=08cf13552b70232c96fea9293fdd54066243d79a I
have downloaded the HDA Analyzer tool but I can't seem to get the internal
speakers to work correctly in any consistent way, although they do occasionally
work correctly for a few seconds. I can consistently make sound come from the
speakers if I chose VREF = 50 or 80 in Node[0x0d]pin but it sounds like I am
using a much smaller lower quality speaker when I do that. Here is the text
dump for that node configuration:
Node 0x0d [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x41048b: Stereo Amp-In
    Amp-In caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x03, stepsize=0x27, mute=0
    Amp-In vals: [0x00 0x00]
    Pincap 0x1764: IN Detect Balance
Vref caps: HIZ 50 GRD 80
Pin Default 0x40f0: [N/A] Line Out at Ext N/A
Conn = Unknown, Color = Unknown
  DefAssociation = 0xf, Sequence = 0x0
    Unsolicited: tag=0x00, enabled=0
    Power: setting=D0, actual=D0
    Delay: 1 samples

WORKAROUND for the headphones only: # echo "options snd-hda-intel
  model=imac27_122" >> /etc/modprobe.d/imac_local.conf followed by a
  reboot.

Bug description:

linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic appears to contain a regression, probably
related to the CVE-2017-1000364 fix backport / patch.

Using this kernel, the Oracle Java browser plugin always crashes
during stack-related actions on initialization. This means, the plugin
  completely stopped working.

It works perfectly fine in linux-image-4.4.0-79-generic (vurlerable to
CVE-2017-1000364) as well as linux-image-4.11.6-041106-generic, which also
contains a fix for CVE-2017-1000364.

  uname -a:

  UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I tested Oracle Java 1.8 u131 as well as 1.6 u64 in Firefox 51.0.1 as
well as Iceweasel / Firefox/3.5.16 in a chroot.

Using linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic it crashes in all combinations
while with both other kernels it works.

I was not able to obtain any detailed crash information from Firefox 51.0.1,
but Iceweasel 3.5.16 crashed completely, allowing me to obtain a stack trace
which shows the relation to stack operations performed by the plugin, even
without proper debug symbols:

  > (gdb) bt full
  > #0 0x7fa06d805307 in _expand_stack_to(unsigned char*) () from
/opt/java-8-oracle/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so

I first assumed a bug in the Java plugin, but it works fine in Linux 4.11.6.

The crash will be triggered by any applet, for example the test applet at:

  * https://java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp

I'm running the Ubuntu 16.04 based KDE Neon distribution which somehow
apparently does not allow me to use apport to report this bug:

  > $ LANG= apport-cli linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic

If someone can tell me how to get apport working for this package, I
can use it to collect additional information, but (unfortunately?) the
problem should be fairly easy to reproduce...

Bug description:
Trying to use the impress remote
  (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Impress_Remote) over bluetooth
with libreoffice over ubuntu bionic fails.

The handset errors out that it cannot connect with Libreoffice on the
computer even if the bluetooth adapter on the handset and on the
  computer are correctly paired.

This does not seem to be an issue in the Libreoffice or in the impress
  remote code:

  - I have tested also past LibO versions
  - The Impress remote codebase has not changed recently

This used to work on the same hardware (headset and laptop) with
  ubuntu 16.04.

Hence the issue seems to be in a regression in the ubuntu bluetooth
  stack.

  To replicate:

  1) Install Libreoffice on Ubuntu bionic (either from the ubuntu repo
or with the deb packages from the document fundation)

  2) Assure that your computer has bluetooth

  3) Install impress remote on an android handset (either from the play
  store of via fdroid)

  4) Assure that "remote control" is enabled in impress
  Tools>Options>Impress>General

  5) Pair the bluetooth adapters in the laptop and in the computer

  6) Open a presentation on the laptop

  7) Open the remote on the handset, got to the bluetooth pane see the
  computer there, touch it

  8) See the impress remote erroring out

Most likely you will also get a bluetooth error on dmesg

RFCOMM server failed for LibreOffice Impress Remote: rfcomm_bind:
  Address already in use (98)

Same issue was reported for fedora
