Title:
10de:11fc [Dell Precision M4800] Screen does not wake up after sleep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When the laptop is either set to sleep by entering Fn-F1 or by
timeout, the screen is black after waking it up again (using the power
button, it does not wake by mousepad movement or key presses).

In earlier Ubuntu versions (14.04), a workaround was to enter a
terminal console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F7, but that does
  not seem to work anymore.

The problem is is present in todays (2014-12-8) Vivid daily image
(booted with "nomodeset", but not done any configuration of the
  screen).

  The screen brightness

The brightness control does not work at all on 14.04.1

  Steps:
  1. Install 14.04.1 + update
  2. Test the brightness control with hotkeys
  3. Test the brightness control by using the "Brightness and Lock" applet.

  Expected results:
  * Brightness control should work in step 2 and 3

  Actual result:
  * Brightness level would change with the hotkey, but the backlight level
won't, nothing happened when you scroll the scrollbar in the "Brightness and
Lock" applet.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1400235] Re: 10de:11fc [Dell Precision M4800] Screen does not wake up after sleep

2015-01-29 Thread Marius B. Kotsbak
I already did try the "resume-track" debugging procedure, but it gave
nothing, so I guess the problem here is not the resume process, but the
turning in screen process.

** Description changed:

When the laptop is either set to sleep by entering Fn-F1 or by timeout,
the screen is black after waking it up again (using the power button, it
does not wake by mousepad movement or key presses).

In earlier Ubuntu versions (14.04), a workaround was to enter a terminal
console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F7, but that does not seem to
  work anymore.

The problem is is present in todays (2014-12-8) Vivid daily image
(booted with "nomodeset", but not done any configuration of the screen).

True, but that one was not available for Utopic. Anyway, the Vivid
version installed, but same result. It is not even possible to wake it
up.

Xorg would crash and restart (you will see the login screen again and
again) when the HDMI / DP cable is connected to the system.

  Steps:
  1. Install 14.04 + update (3.13.0-36), boot to desktop
  2. Connect a HDMI / DP cable

  Expected result:
  * The external monitor should work

  Actual result:
  * The external monitor screen is black, and the Xorg crashed -> black screen
on this laptop -> login screen shows up -> black screen... repeat.

  WORKAROUND:
  * Install the proprietary nvidia driver

I'm not sure if this should be consider as a blocker.
But hey, we need to certified this I+N system with the proprietary driver, I
think it's OK to not to call this a blocker.

Title:
nVidia GK106GLM [Quadro K2100M] [10de:11fc] Connect to HDMI / DP port
with open-source driver will cause Xorg crash

Status in Accelerated Xorg driver for nVidia cards:
  Unknown
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  CID: 201305-13527 Dell Precision M4800

2014-07-19 Thread Marius B. Kotsbak
That would be the easiest, so that it could have been included in the
Linux kernel, else they could add support for it in the latest release.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1323882] Re: Dell M4800 kernel crashes every few hours

Hmm, it looks like you are running out of RAM. What about trying with
more swap space allocated? How much RAM does your laptop have?

Btw, I have serious stability issues with my M4800's wifi module.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 499237] Re: Doesn't detect usb flash drive as SSD

2014-06-23 Thread Marius B. Kotsbak
I guess this might not be fixable at all. Getting spin speed/SSD or not
is done with this command (see
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.bcache.devel/554):

$ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda|grep Rot
Nominal Media Rotation Rate: Solid State Device

This is my internal SSD hard drive. I tried with a rotational hard drive
attached with USB, but get no information about that. Same with a USB
memory stick. This leads me to believe that it is not possible to detect
if a USB connected drive is SSD or not, and the kernel assumes
rotational drive as default.

The "huawei/ndisdup-changes" branch upstream might solve this:

  http://cgit.freedesktop.org/ModemManager/ModemManager/log/?h=huawei
  /ndisdup-changes

in addition to some kernel changes mentioned. According to
  https://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-

  Quantal, as I get:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1169117] Re: REGRESSION: MBIM kernel suppport should be disabled until userspace support available (breaks Ericsson H5321 etc.)

2014-01-03 Thread Marius B. Kotsbak
Maybe this should be set to WONTFIX and possibly just fix it for older
versions (12.04 LTS).

Title:
REGRESSION: MBIM kernel suppport should be disabled until userspace
support available (breaks Ericsson H5321 etc.)

Status in The Linux Kernel:
  Fix Released
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in “modemmanager” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “linux” package in Debian:
  Invalid

Bug description:
"commit bd329e1 ("net: cdc_ncm: do not bind to NCM compatible MBIM devices")
introduced a new policy, preferring MBIM for dual NCM/MBIM functions if
the cdc_mbim driver was enabled. This caused a regression for users
  wanting to use NCM."

For background on this change please see Bug #1102343.

This could be solved in different ways:
  1) Remove "cdc_mbim.ko" from packages like linux-image-extra-3.8.0-XX-YY.
Easy, but makes it harder for people to experiment with MBIM and add userspace
support

  2) Set the kernel parameter "prefer_mbim" to false for "cdc_ncm" module. This
could be done by adding a file "/etc/modprobe.d/avoid-mbim.conf" with content:
    options cdc_ncm prefer_mbim=N

This will allow people wanting to test MBIM easy access by removing or
editing the file. Then the question is if this file should stay in
modemmanager package or maybe in the kernel package? The required code
for this option to exist seems to be in Ubuntu Raring packages in
  commit 04188f3010f64ddf2c75c3f4953eee9bdb4f5cc1.

  3) Debian has solved it by patching the kernel to reverse the default to be
not to use MBIM:

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/kernel-svn-changes/2013-March/018852.html
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2013/03/msg00611.html

  WORKAROUND: Add in /etc/modprobe.d/cdc_ncm.conf :
  options cdc_ncm prefer_mbim=N

At this time, I think it is better to introduce MBIM support in Ubuntu
as the support in Modemmanager is already there. See bug #1102343 and
#1123302.

Please do not mix in the same issue with complete different hardware.
Rather open a new bug report for the Dell hardware.
