[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1389077] Re: [HP ProBook 4530s / Lenovo G580] Intel Powerclamp is Slowing CPU

2019-03-22 Thread Marius Gedminas
Happened to my Lenovo ThinkPad X220. Yesterday I was playing Factorio,
with the laptop fan spinning full-throttle, and intel_powerclamp started
idle injection, which, ok, fair enough. Factorio is very CPU hungry and
this laptop model is like 6 years old.

What is a problem is that today I'm not playing Factorio, the CPU
temperature is at 45 degrees, the fan is idle, and yet powerclamp is
still doing the idle injection schtick. Loadavg over 5, kinject_idle at
50-60% on all four threads (this is a dualcore system with
hyperthreading), everything is painfully laggy.

Rebooting fixed everything (until next time, I suppose).

Title:
[HP ProBook 4530s / Lenovo G580] Intel Powerclamp is Slowing CPU

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I upgraded from KUbuntu 14.04 to 14.10. Immediately, while playing
minecraft with my daughter, I noticed the game was running very
slowly. Even after closing the game, my web browsing slowed to a
  crawl.

Looking at the processes in top, I noticed there were 4 tasks called
kidle_inject running at 50% CPU each. After spending a long time
figuring out what caused this, I found out this is caused by the Intel
Powerclamp driver. I never did anything to enable this, and haven't
observed this slowdown before the upgrade.

I found the powerclamp driver in the
  /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device5 directory:

  root@bkat-HP-ProBook-4530s:/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device5# cat type
  intel_powerclamp
  root@bkat-HP-ProBook-4530s:/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device5# cat cur_state
  -1
  root@bkat-HP-ProBook-4530s:/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device5# cat max_state
  50

I tried to echo 0 to cur_state, but it still reported -1 when I catted
  the value.

There seems to be no obvious way to disable this, and this should not
have been enabled in the first place.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1742483] [NEW] Kernel 4.4.0-108-generic fails to boot on this machine

2018-01-10 Thread Marius Gedminas
Public bug reported:

Kernel 4.4.0-108-generic fails to boot on one particular x86-64 machine
I have here. The screen goes blank (backlight is on), no cursor
visible, no reaction to keyboard (CapsLock/NumLock/Ctrl+Alt+Del/Alt-

it down for like 10 seconds, which turns off the machine).

  1. Get a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 with Intel graphics (PCI ID 8086:0126, rev 09)
  2. Get a DisplayPort -> DVI cable, plug the DVI end into a monitor (Samsung
SyncMaster 193p+)
  3. Plug the DP end into the ThinkPad

  What I expect:
  - hotplug is detected within a reasonable time, GNOME automatically extends
my desktop

  What actually happens
  - nothing

  Things that work:
  - if I run 'xrandr' in an xterm, the monitor is detected instantly and GNOME
reconfigures the screen.
  - if I open System Preferences -> Display, it does an xrandr probe behind my
back and instantly detects/reconfigures the screen.
  - if I plug the DP cable before I open the laptop lid to wake it up from S3
sleep, the external monitor is detected.
  - if I use a VGA cable instead of the DP -> DVI one, hotplug is detected
within seconds
  - if I *unplug* the DP cable, the unplug is detected instantly.
  - I once waited ~5 minutes without running xrandr, and it actually detected
the monitor and reconfigured.

  - I once waited ~5 minutes without running xrandr, and it actually detected
the monitor and reconfigured.

Title:
DisplayPort hotplugging is not detected on a ThinkPad X220

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Get a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 with Intel graphics (PCI ID 8086:0126, rev 09)
  2. Get a DisplayPort -> DVI cable, plug the DVI end into a monitor (Samsung
SyncMaster 193p+)
  3. Plug the DP end into the ThinkPad

  What I expect:
  - hotplug is detected within a reasonable time, GNOME automatically extends
my desktop

  What actually happens
  - nothing

  Things that work:
  - if I run 'xrandr' in an xterm, the monitor is detected instantly and GNOME
reconfigures the screen.

Title:
DisplayPort hotplugging is not detected on a ThinkPad X220

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Get a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 with Intel graphics (PCI ID 8086:0126, rev 09)
  2. Get a DisplayPort -> DVI cable, plug the DVI end into a monitor (Samsung
SyncMaster 193p+)
  3. Plug the DP end into the ThinkPad

  What I expect:
  - hotplug is detected within a reasonable time, GNOME automatically extends
my desktop

  What actually happens
  - nothing

  Things that work:
  - if I run 'xrandr' in an xterm, the monitor is detected instantly and GNOME
reconfigures the screen.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1263681] Re: DisplayPort hotplugging is not detected on a ThinkPad X220

2014-01-10 Thread Marius Gedminas
The bug still exists in yesterday's trusty daily image.

Specifically, test #1:
1. booted the daily image from USB
2. plugged in DisplayPort cable
3. nothing happened
4. ran xrandr in a terminal, external display was detected

Test #2:
1. plugged in DisplayPort cable
2. booted the daily image
3. had an extended desktop right from the beginning
4. unplugged the cable, desktop was reconfigured instantly
5. plugged the cable back, the hotplug was detected(!) and unity went back to
extended desktop
6. unplugged the cable again, waited a bit longer
7. plugged the cable back in, nothing happened (and nothing continues to
happen, several minutes later)

Will boot kernel v3.13-rc7-trusty from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D next

Title:
DisplayPort hotplugging is not detected on a ThinkPad X220

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Get a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 with Intel graphics (PCI ID 8086:0126, rev 09)
  2. Get a DisplayPort -> DVI cable, plug the DVI end into a monitor (Samsung
SyncMaster 193p+)
  3. Plug the DP end into the ThinkPad

  What I expect:
  - hotplug is detected within a reasonable time, GNOME automatically extends
my desktop

  What actually happens
  - nothing

  Things that work:
  - if I run 'xrandr' in an xterm, the monitor is detected instantly and GNOME
reconfigures the screen.

Title:
DisplayPort hotplugging is not detected on a ThinkPad X220

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Get a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 with Intel graphics (PCI ID 8086:0126, rev 09)
  2. Get a DisplayPort -> DVI cable, plug the DVI end into a monitor (Samsung
SyncMaster 193p+)
  3. Plug the DP end into the ThinkPad

  What I expect:
  - hotplug is detected within a reasonable time, GNOME automatically extends
my desktop

  What actually happens
  - nothing

  Things that work:
  - if I run 'xrandr' in an xterm, the monitor is detected instantly and GNOME
reconfigures the screen.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1378863] [NEW] ThinkPad X220: unplugging DisplayPort breaks backlight (intel video)

2014-10-08 Thread Marius Gedminas
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Plug in an external monitor using a DisplayPort -> HDMI cable
2. Unplug the cable

What happens about 30% of the time:

- Brightness of laptop's internal LCD drops to lowest level
- Brightness keys (Fn-Home/End on this Lenovo ThinkPad X220) produce the
gnome-shell on-screen display of the changing brightness meter, but actual LCD
brightness doesn't change.

There are a couple of workarounds:

1. Ctrl+Alt+F1 and use Fn-Home/End to control brightness, then
Ctrl+Alt+F7 back to X (where brightness keys continue to not work)

or

2. Plug/unplug DisplayPort again, this usually fixes the brigthness
(maybe 60% of the time)

I've been having this problem on this laptop since January of 2014. I was
running Ubuntu 13.10 then, I'm running 14.04 now.

Sometimes the brightness-drop-and-you-can't-fix-it thing happens on
DisplayPort hotplug rather than on unplug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1378863] Re: ThinkPad X220: unplugging DisplayPort breaks backlight (intel video)

2014-10-08 Thread Marius Gedminas
With kernel 3.17.0-031700-generic:

- 1st time I plugged in the DisplayPort connector, nothing happened (bug
1263681). I pressed Fn-Home as a workaround and external monitor got
detected, but internal monitor went black (no picture, no backlight).
Pressing Fn-Home again turned it on, at minimum brightness. Fn-Home/End
brightness control keys continue to work.

- 1st unplug changed nothing

- 2nd hotplug was detected instantly, internal LCD went black again.
Fn-Home was required again to bring it to life.

- 2nd unplug changed nothing

- 3rd hotplug was same as 2nd.

I can bring the internal LCD into the no-picture-no-backlight state by
pressing Fn-End until I reach minimum brigthness. This is something
new: with older kernel versions minimum brightness still had a visible
picture.

Conclusion: latest kernel has one half of the bug (DP hotplugging drops
screen brightness to minimum level) but so far hasn't shown the other
half (brightness keys don't stop working).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1378863] Re: ThinkPad X220: unplugging DisplayPort breaks backlight (intel video)

2014-10-09 Thread Marius Gedminas
I did not have a DisplayPort cable before January 2014.

Plugging/unplugging VGA never caused any brightness issues. And still
doesn't -- I just tested with current 14.04 kernel (had to go back to it
because I need VirtualBox for work).

Title:
ThinkPad X220: unplugging DisplayPort breaks backlight (intel video)

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1435509] [NEW] cciss: hangs in modprobe, prevents server from booting

2015-03-23 Thread Marius Gedminas
Public bug reported:

I've upgraded an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server to 12.04 LTS. It now fails to
boot. More specifically, kernel 3.2.0-77 hangs in the cciss driver
during initialization.

The hardware is an HP ProLiant DL385 G2. The RAID controller is HP
Smart Array P400:

lspci -knn -s 06:01
06:01.0 RAID bus controller [0104]: Hewlett-Packard Company Smart Array
P600 [103c:3220]
 Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company 3 Gb/s SAS RAID [103c:3225]
 Kernel driver in use: cciss
 Kernel modules: cciss

I can observe the boot process over serial console (attached:
serial-console.log). You can see the kernel messages about cciss being
detected, udev messages about modprobe timing out followed by boot process
timeouts and a failure to mount the root filesystem.
You can also see hung task messages from the kernel (kworker/0:2 and modprobe
are both hung inside cciss), and you can see some of my futile attempts to look
around in the initramfs.

I can boot an older kernel (2.6.32-73-server, left over from Ubuntu
10.04 LTS) just fine. I'm afraid dmesg and other bits of information
collected by apport for this bug report will be misleadingly from that
older kernel.

The same problem persists with kernel 3.4.0-030400-generic from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-precise/ (which is
the latest precise kernel in that PPA).

Bits of dmesg that mention cciss:

Workaround: adding 'pci=noioapicreroute' to the kernel command line
makes the 3.2.0-79-generic kernel boot on this hardware.

I can observe the boot process over serial console (attached:

You can also see hung task messages from the kernel (kworker/0:2 and modprobe
are both hung inside cciss), and you can see some of my futile attempts to look
around in the initramfs.

I can boot an older kernel (2.6.32-73-server, left over from Ubuntu
10.04 LTS) just fine. I'm afraid dmesg and other bits of information
collected by apport for this bug report will be misleadingly from that
  older kernel.

2015-03-24 Thread Marius Gedminas
I'm hesitating to link to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=650119 because it seems like a subtly different
bug (also one that was fixed in upstream 3.2.0), but it probably has
emails of people who understand CCISS kernel code.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1435509] Re: cciss: hangs in modprobe, prevents server from booting

2015-03-24 Thread Marius Gedminas
** Description changed:

I've upgraded an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server to 12.04 LTS. It now fails to
boot. More specifically, kernel 3.2.0-77 hangs in the cciss driver
  during initialization.

The hardware is an HP ProLiant DL385 G2. The RAID controller is HP
  Smart Array P400:

   Kernel driver in use: cciss
   Kernel modules: cciss

I can observe the boot process over serial console (attached:
serial-console.log). You can see the kernel messages about cciss being
detected, udev messages about modprobe timing out followed by boot process

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1226981] Re: CPUs get stuck in Turbo mode after a suspend/resume cycle on a ThinkPad X220

2013-09-18 Thread Marius Gedminas
Installed. Rebooted. uname -a shows

Linux platonas 3.12.0-031200rc1-generic #201309161735 SMP Mon Sep 16
21:38:21 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

At first I thought the issue showed up right after boot, but now I'm no
longer sure. Could be just the ondemand governor ramping up the
frequency because of all that CPU activity during boot/login.

In normal circumstances the laptop's idle temperature is about +48–49°C.
When this bug happens, temperature rises steadily until it reaches
about +72°C.

At the moment, with the 3.12 kernel, the temperature is oscillating
between +50°C and +54°C.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1226981] Re: CPUs get stuck in Turbo mode after a suspend/resume cycle on a ThinkPad X220

2013-09-18 Thread Marius Gedminas
I was unable to reproduce after two suspend/resume cycles with kernel
3.12. But then with raring's normal kernel this bug used to occur maybe
twice a month. I'll continue using 3.12 and see if this happens again.

Incidentally, this linux-thinkpad@ thread may be about the same issue:
http://mail.matrix.de/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2013-July/051462.html
I tried to talk about my issue on the list, but didn't receive any answers:
http://mail.matrix.de/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2013-July/051476.html

Title:
CPUs get stuck in Turbo mode after a suspend/resume cycle on a
  ThinkPad X220

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Often, but not always, after I suspend and resume my ThinkPad X220, I
notice that the laptop becomes hot, the fan is constantly spinning,
and powertop shows all four CPUs stuck at 2.5 GHz.

Suspending and resuming again fixes the issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2007286] Re: Ubuntu does not clean out old kernel module files (in /lib/modules) when old kernels are removed

2023-12-04 Thread Marius Gedminas
AFAIU by default it's unattended-upgrades that takes care of removing
old kernel (and kernel module packages). Apparently it doesn't pass
--purge when it removes the old kernel packages. Should it?
