I am using the A18 bios, and the release date according to Dell US website was 04 May 2016, so I think it is the latest bios. It seems to be the same problem as I am having with my Dell Latitude E7440 with Ubuntu 14.04.03, Ubuntu 15.04 amd64, Ubuntu 15.10 amd64, and also when testing with the latest upstream kernels. I raised a separate bug report for the problem as requested by Christopher M. Penalver 22/10/15; this bug report is currently active (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1513914) I am not sure about the link, it seems to suggest that it has already been fixed in kernel 3.1.6+, but I am now up to kernel 4.4.0 and the problem still exists. My E7440 Laptop is 18 months old, I have seen the problem for about a year with 14.0.4, 15.04, and 15.10, The problem was such a nuisance that I had abandoned both 14.0.4, and 15.04 after trying each version for about 1 week each. Have tried downloading the mainline kernel according to the link, I think I have done it correctly, but info was not exactly as link. I downloaded the 3 files and run the command line instruction. This resulted in3 extra options appearing in the GRUB boot-loader under the Advanced options for Ubuntu tab; Ubuntu with linux 4.3.0-040300-generic Ubuntu with linux 4.3.0-040300-generic(upstart) Ubuntu with linux 4.3.0-040300-generic(recovery mode) I have used the "Ubuntu with linux 4.3.0-040300-generic" option to start Ubuntu, The problem still happens the same as before, even when I start up wiith the new kernel, > Dell E7440 touchpad works correctly when freshly started each time; but after some time running the mouse pointer starts to randomly jumps position when I try to use the touchpad. Once it occurs the problem is so bad that cannot use laptop with touchpad and need to shutdown. If I shut down Ubuntu and re-start after about 10 seconds, the problem is temporarily resolved. Hello, Sorry for the slow response, but I upgraded to Ununtu 15;10 on the release day, and have been checking to see if the problem still exists om 15.10, unfortunately it still exists with 15.10 I am very new to Linux in general, (just in process of migrating from Windows 7 to Ubuntu), I am new to the forum and am not sure what you mean by filing a new report via a terminal. Same problem on my Dell E7440. with Ubuntu 14.04.3 (installed version). When holding my finger still on the touchpad, the cursor starts jumping back and forth (mainly vertically) from finger location to some random location. Updating to latest BIOS A15, and latest touchpad drivers on 17th August did not help. Problem seems to not happen for the first few minutes after each Ubuntu startup, but then starts happening and becomes quite frequent after about 20 minutes. As far as I can tell the problem lies in Ubuntu's Stock kernel, therefore is connected to Ubuntu, also all the software is from Ubuntu's repository, really all that is different is a couple of modifications to Lubuntu such as adding some programs, changing wallpapers and textures, ect, so my spin-off is closer to Ubuntu than you think. (I could make it back to Ubuntu's Unity If it is required.)
