[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2034619] Re: [amdgpu] gnome-shell gets SIGKILL'd when lock screen or under heavy load in Wayland

2023-10-29 Thread RavanH
I can totally confirm this issue affecting my Thinkpad P14s with Ryzen 7
is fixed by the mutter release in Proposed. Eabling the Prodosed repo
did not get me any updates but after installing mutter with "sudo apt
install -t mantic-proposed mutter" all is well in town :)

Thanks so much for this!

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

gnome-shell gets unceremoniously SIGKILLed on some Ryzen systems,
sometimes when the screen locks, sometimes when launching particular
  apps.

  [ Workaround ]

  Add this to /etc/environment:

    MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user

  and then reboot.

  [ Test Plan ]

Not all Ryzen systems (including one I just purchased) are able to
reproduce the bug. We have no choice but to leave final verification
to the community. Anyone affected should try locking their screen and
verify they are not instantly returned to the login screen.

[ Where problems could occur ]

Anywhere in frame scheduling and particularly for mouse cursor
movement since that's what the real-time thread exists to optimize.

  [ Original Description ]

I have this issue on Ubuntu 23.10. Lock screen works only with an external
monitor connected. Otherwise the session is ended and the user is logged out
and brought to the gdm screen.
  All works in xorg.

OK, 7 years after the original report, this issue still seems relevant
on Ubuntu 20.04.

So how to know if a machine needs mtrr_cleanup at all?

I have found errors like this on many machines (one with 128 GB of
RAM, mine with just 4GB). The instructions want you to specify
kernel options that you don't need to do. Just turning off
mtrr_cleanup appears to be the best option. You can fix it be
  specifying disable_mtrr_cleanup.

  According to kernel paramaters
  (https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt)

disable_mtrr_cleanup [X86]
The kernel tries to adjust MTRR layout from continuous
to discrete, to make X server driver able to add WB
entry later. This parameter disables that.

From this I understand it was here to help allow leave the X server
space if it needed it in the future. That should no longer be
necessary, correct? I have an Intel GPU and noticed no performance
  problems by disabling it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1685442] Re: Errors: flip_done timed out during boot-up; slow boot

Confirmed on Mackbook 2008 both the issue (flip_done error and very slow
boot) and the work-around (video=SVIDEO-1:d)

Title:
Errors: flip_done timed out during boot-up; slow boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I had been running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on many laptop computers
(especially Dell D620, D630, E6400) with no problem.

I created a Live USB with Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS and tried it on a Dell
D630. It was very slow to boot up (about 90 seconds) as opposed to
the 30-45 seconds it usually takes. For a few seconds there were error
messages that included the phrase "flip_done timed out".

When the Ubuntu desktop appeared, the mouse cursor hung for a while,
but then came back to life. I didn't do much testing from there. I
did a Live session with the 16.04.2 LTS on a different D630 laptop,
  and the same problem occureed.

I Googled the problem, and found several hits.
  -
On an Arch forum, someone reported the problem on a Dell D630, like mine. It
also occured on other laptops:
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218581

The suggestion was that the bug was related to kernel version 4.8.x
and the 965GM chipset, which is what the D630 has.

So I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 on a Dell D620 (with a 945GM chipset) and the
problem DID NOT occur.
  ---
For a similar boot-up problem, Ubuntu Forum suggested going back to an
earlier version of Ubuntu.
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2348892

I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 (with the 4.4.0-31-generic kernel), and
  the problem did NOT occur.

So I'm solving the problem for myself by using Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 LTS rather
than 16.04.2.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391407] Re: package firmware-b43-installer 1:018-2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 4

Bug report dialog set me to this thread.

I followed the link provided by Anthony Heiberg (above) and found that
only doing a

$ sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source

(skipping the rest of the instructions) seems to have resolved it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1309462] Re: 8086:0166 [Aspire V5-571P] Backlight not adjustable

2014-04-21 Thread RavanH
By the way, I just noticed a (probably) related bug which exists in all
kernels and is NOT resolved with video.use_native_backlight=1

The option in the config screen "Screen brightness and lock" (this is a
translation, I have Dutch version so not sure how it is called in
English) where it says something like "dim screen to save power"...
checked or not... power cable connected or not... it does not have any
effect.

Tested 1.13.10, then moved to 1.14.1 and finally 1.15-rc2. All upstream
kernels with the same result: needs video.use_native_backlight=1

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1309462] Re: 8086:0166 [Aspire V5-571P] Backlight not adjustable

2014-04-20 Thread RavanH
Hi Christopher,

Having Windows 8 on dual boot, I decided to pass via Windows to upgrade
the BIOS with the exe downloaded from ACER. Boy do I regret that... It
did the upgrade but subsequently I could not boot the system anymore! I
managed to get into the BIOS with F2 and switch the SecureBoot option
back off (apparently switched on during the upgrade) by switching off
UEFI, saving the options and rebooting. Then back into BIOS again and
switching UEFI on again made SecureBoot remain off (strange!)... But
then I only made it to a grub rescue prompt with a message about Unknown
filesystem.

Lots of reading on the net on how to 'fix' this, I still could not
resolve it from the prompt each attempt failing with some message about
reaching end of file unexpectedly when trying to assign
vmlinuz-3.13.0-24 to linux.

Finally created a Live USB and followed instructions for BootRepair
(took the one for saucy as there is no trusty repo for it yet) which got
the system back up. Amazing software that!

Back in Ubuntu, booted with only "quiet splash" boot parameters, I find
that the backlight control is failing again as it was before I added
video.use_native_backlight=1 to the kernel boot switches.

adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys
Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator but no
  actual backlight change.

2014-04-18 Thread RavanH
My appoligies:

It turns out I forgot an update-grub after reverting the kernel
parameters. Can/should the attached debug files be removed or replaced?
Please let me know :)

And please ignore all remarks about the default interface remaining
gone. It's back and called acpi_video0 ... Also the hotkeys are working
again and the showkey output is:

Fn+Left:
0xe0 0x4c 0xe0 0xcc

Fn+Right:
0xe0 0x54 0xe0 0xd4

They are so I did (not /boot/grub/menu.lst but /etc/default/grub
though...) and I rebooted even though it is not written I should...

  > Then, switch to any console, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1, login by root account

I did (after reboot mentioned above) and found that the hotkeys do not
give any output at all anymore... Strange. So I reverted all changed
above and rebooted with only "quiet splash" boot parameters but still
the hotkeys remain dead. Not even the faux brightness slider change
  anymore. Very strange!

Title:
Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not
working. Both on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 and 14.04 neither hotkeys or
adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys
Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator (this will
change after testing with kernel parameters!) but no actual backlight
  change.

  Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight "Testing
for a workaround" here are my findings. More debugging info will be
  attached later.

Title:
Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not
working. Both on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 and 14.04 neither hotkeys or
adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys
Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator (this will
change after testing with kernel parameters!) but no actual backlight
  change.

  Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight "Testing
for a workaround" here are my findings. More debugging info will be
  attached later.

  TESTING FOR A WORK AROUND

  > Reboot with only the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor :
  > Make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

  > sudo su
  > echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
  > Please comment on if the brightness changes.

  Yes

  > Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
  > and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

  > If using a v3.13.x+ series kernel, reboot with just kernel parameter
video.use_native_backlight=1
  > and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

  > If your backlight hotkeys are Fn+Left and Fn+Right, add kernel
  parameter atkbd.softraw=0 to /boot/grub/menu.lst

They are so I did (not /boot/grub/menu.lst but /etc/default/grub
though...) and I rebooted even though it is not written I should...

  > Then, switch to any console, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1, login by root account
  and execute: showkey -s

I did (after reboot mentioned above) and found that the hotkeys do not
give any output at all anymore... Strange. So I reverted all changed
above and rebooted with only "quiet splash" boot parameters but still
the hotkeys remain dead. Not even the faux brightness slider change
  anymore. Very strange!

  * please note that there is no brightness applet in Ubuntu GNOME 14.04
but going to the Settings > Screen Brightness & Lock the brightness
  can now be controlled

BASIC DEBUGGING INFORMATION (all files will be attached later)

  $ ls /sys/class/backlight
  intel_backlight

Note that this used to list video0_backlight (as I remember it) too
but after testing and reverting (!) that entry remains gone. Strange.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1309462] Re: Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

2014-04-18 Thread RavanH
Result of ls /sys/class/backlight > backlight

Please note that this is with the default kernel parameters "quiet
splash" but AFTER having followed the steps in "Testing for a work
around" steps... I'm sure there was another interface listed BEFORE I
did the steps. I think it was called video0_backlight but now it is and
remains gone. Strange.

Title:
Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not
working. Both on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 and 14.04 neither hotkeys or
adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys
Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator (this will
change after testing with kernel parameters!) but no actual backlight
  change.

  Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight "Testing
for a workaround" here are my findings. More debugging info will be
  attached later.

  TESTING FOR A WORK AROUND

  > Reboot with only the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor :
  > Make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

  > sudo su
  > echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
  > Please comment on if the brightness changes.

  Yes

  > Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
  > and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

  > If using a v3.13.x+ series kernel, reboot with just kernel parameter

  > and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

  > If your backlight hotkeys are Fn+Left and Fn+Right, add kernel
  parameter atkbd.softraw=0 to /boot/grub/menu.lst

They are so I did (not /boot/grub/menu.lst but /etc/default/grub
though...) and I rebooted even though it is not written I should...

  > Then, switch to any console, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1, login by root account
  and execute: showkey -s

I did (after reboot mentioned above) and found that the hotkeys do not
give any output at all anymore... Strange. So I reverted all changed
above and rebooted with only "quiet splash" boot parameters but still
the hotkeys remain dead. Not even the faux brightness slider change
  anymore. Very strange!

  * please note that there is no brightness applet in Ubuntu GNOME 14.04
but going to the Settings > Screen Brightness & Lock the brightness
  can now be controlled
