[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1550779] Re: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches
I have been experiencing this kind of problem (with intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler in syslog) for a couple of weeks now on Ubuntu 17.10 (4.13.0-39-generic). Here's the syslog extract: May 9 13:18:57 xx zeitgeist-datah[2322]: recent-manager-provider.vala:106: (null) was not registered in RecentInfo item 0x55b07472c020 May 9 13:19:58 xx kernel: [834627.678287] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun May 9 13:19:58 xx /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1843]: (II) modeset(0): EDID vendor "FUS", prod id 1957 May 9 13:19:58 xx /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1843]: (II) modeset(0): Using hsync ranges from config file May 9 13:19:58 xx /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1843]: (II) modeset(0): Using vrefresh ranges from config file May 9 13:19:58 xx /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1843]: (II) modeset(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines: May 9 13:19:58 xx /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1843]: (II) modeset(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x0.0 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1089 1095 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz eP) May 9 13:19:58 sanchopansa09 /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[1843]: (II) modeset(0): Modeline "800x600"x0.0 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz e) Mostly the secondary screen goes (and stays) black when this happens, sometimes the primary notebook (Lenovo) screen. Interestingly, the secondary screen usually comes back when I open “change background” from the context menu (on the primary screen). I need not actually change the background, just open “change background.” Often when the screen starts flickering and goes black there is the sound of really heavy disk activity, maybe more than justifiable by sys- logging. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1550779 Title: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Upgraded linux-image-extra-4.2.0-30-generic I see graphic glitches, looks like the graphic buffer gets screwed up - funny repetition's patterns (back in time glitches) - black screen (<1sec) - graphic errors I can influence the severity of the issue with switching windows and using certain programs, e.g. Google Maps in chrome causes this issue reproducibly dmesg | grep i915 [2.726864] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20150522 for :00:02.0 on minor 0 [2.792005] [drm] GMBUS [i915 gmbus dpb] timed out, falling back to bit banging on pin 5 [3.471092] i915 :00:02.0: fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device [3.471093] i915 :00:02.0: registered panic notifier [9.573129] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun [9.574847] [drm:intel_set_pch_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared pch fifo underrun on pch transcoder A [9.574895] [drm:intel_pch_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun linux-image-extra-4.2.0-27-generic works find ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.10 Package: xorg 1:7.7+7ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.2.0-30.36-generic 4.2.8-ckt3 Uname: Linux 4.2.0-30-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity.support.test.0: ApportVersion: 2.19.1-0ubuntu5 Architecture: amd64 BootLog: CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: None CurrentDesktop: GNOME Date: Sat Feb 27 20:26:07 2016 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: wily DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: virtualbox, 5.0.14, 4.2.0-27-generic, x86_64: installed virtualbox, 5.0.14, 4.2.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed EcryptfsInUse: Yes ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes, including running git bisection searches GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0126] (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:21da] InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-02-11 (15 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 15.10 "Wily Werewolf" - Release amd64 (20151021) MachineType: LENOVO 42912XG ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/@/boot/vmlinuz-4.2.0-30-generic root=UUID=cb34d7bb-9316-49b3-aa94-4e2a3512168f ro rootflags=subvol=@ noprompt quiet SourcePackage: xorg UdevLog: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/log/udev' UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 07/18/2013 dmi.bios.vendor: LENOVO dmi.bios.version: 8DET69WW (1.39 ) dmi.board.asset.tag: Not Available dmi.board.name: 42912XG dmi.board.vendor: LENOVO dmi.board.version: Not Available dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Information dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: LENOVO dmi.chassis.version: Not Available dmi.modalias:

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1674838 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1674838 Since upgrading to Ubuntu 17-04, I have been experiencing the same problem with Firefox (and other network applications, even ping). No reaction to kill, so probably hanging in a syscall. I also have these "CPU… stuck for 22s" messages in syslog, every 28 – 30 seconds. And the process taking 100% of a CPU is usually firefox, not khugepaged, so maybe the problem is not a duplicate of bug #1674838. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
Sorry, I stand corrected… must have booted 3.16 yesterday. Today with the 4.2.0 kernel the core temperatures rose again, only not so much as half a year ago. Outside -- and consequently room -- temperatures here in the Northern Hemisphere have dropped somewhat, that might account for it. So my notebook did not switch off but came into considerable neighbourhood (proximity? sorry, poor English) of the critical temperatures. I will stay with the 3.16 kernel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1452421 Title: ubuntu 15.04 overheats Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: On 2015-04-26 I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04 (from 14.10). Since then, my notebook (HP envy dv6) fan is nearly always on, and the notebook switched off several times, probably due to overheating. Each time I was working with Firefox; watching the "livestream" of www.tagesschau.de seems to be a good way of reproducing the problem. Going back to the 3.16.0-31 kernel (still offered by grub) seems to circumvent the problem. When I boot 3.16 the fan runs only occasionally. My first 15.04 kernel was 3.19.0-15, today I got -16 but the problem is the same. Before the machine switches off (it does not shut down Linux but just goes out) "top" shows me eight instances of "kidle_inject", obviously desperately but hopelessly trying to keep processor load down. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
As the problem seemed to be related to the kernel -- booting a 3.16 kernel made it disappear -- I tested every new kernel that was installed since then, and the problem was always there, even after upgrading to Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily or so). A couple of days ago I received the 4.2.0-18 kernel, and the problem seems gone. Sensor temperatures do not go anywhere near the critical values, the fan is silent most of the time, and no kidle_inject processes start. Of course I have no idea what might have made this difference but I truly appreciate it. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
Today my Ubuntu kernel updated to 3.19.8-031908. I tried my usual www.tagesschau.de video, and it held out the full fifteen minutes. top showed me the usual eight kidle-inject processes, and responsiveness was slow but the system did not power off. It looks like progress… but it could be due to the lower outside temperature today. I will try again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1452421 Title: ubuntu 15.04 overheats Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: On 2015-04-26 I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04 (from 14.10). Since then, my notebook (HP envy dv6) fan is nearly always on, and the notebook switched off several times, probably due to overheating. Each time I was working with Firefox; watching the livestream of www.tagesschau.de seems to be a good way of reproducing the problem. Since then, my notebook (HP envy dv6) fan is nearly always on, and the notebook switched off several times, probably due to overheating. Each time I was working with Firefox; watching the livestream of www.tagesschau.de seems to be a good way of reproducing the problem. Going back to the 3.16.0-31 kernel (still offered by grub) seems to circumvent the problem. When I boot 3.16 the fan runs only occasionally. My first 15.04 kernel was 3.19.0-15, today I got -16 but the problem is the same. Before the machine switches off (it does not shut down Linux but just goes out) top shows me eight instances of kidle_inject, obviously desperately but hopelessly trying to keep processor load down. Under the 3.19 kernel the plugin-container process goes to loads of more than 100 % (on a four-core box), under 3.16 it never goes beyond 60 %. Note that between the overheat and the normal scenario I change only the kernel in the boot menu, all other binaries are the same (15.04). Especially, it's the same firefox. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
Thanks for the hint. I did that today and after a few minutes of video streaming (www.tagesschau.de) top showed me the now well-known kidle_inject processes but the box held out for a bit over ten minutes, which is more but not significantly more than before. Then it switched off. I booted the 3.16 kernel, reloaded the same video stream (it is available for two hours), and it played the full 15 minutes without any kidle_injects appearing. And without powering off the machine, of course. This time top (under 3.19) never showed me any processes (firefox, plugin-container) going anywhere near 100% of CPU load; everything remained under 50% most of the time, more or less as with the old kernel. And still those kidle_inject processes come up. Could it be a false alarm (despite the very warm air coming from the fan slots)? I know that kidle_inject generates no CPU load, just blocks other processes from taking a CPU. Could it still have influence on the temperature sensor and the fan? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1452421 Title: ubuntu 15.04 overheats Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: On 2015-04-26 I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04 (from 14.10). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
I tried several things to get the system up under the rc4 kernel. I now can boot to a console screen but as soon as I try to start graphics mode I get the problem that the login screen remains only for a fraction of a second. So my questions are: (1) Can I try anything else to start the system in graphics mode under the rc4 kernel? (2) Can I provide any useful log data from the problem under the 3.19.0-16 kernel? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
Thanks. I found and downloaded the rc4 kernel but have the same problem as with the rc2 kernel: The login screen remains visible only for a fraction of a second, then a console screen appears (displaying messages from system startup) and then a new login screen appears. I think it is a new one as it does not display the one or two password character bullets I managed to type into the previous one. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1452421] Re: ubuntu 15.04 overheats
If I get it right then the kernel versions proposed by Brad and Joseph are different. I first thried Brad's proposal, doing apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. This left me with the 3.19.0-16 kernel I already had. As I mentioned it does not fix the problem. Then I tried to download the mainline kernel suggested by Jospeh but his URL (.../v4.1-rc3-vivid/) gives me a not found on this server. There is, however, an rc2 rather than rc3 kernel (rc3 is unstable). I will try that one. I haven't yet learned how to add a tag to a bug but will try to find out.
I have found how to add tags (edit description opens a text line with tags). I have installed the 4.1 rc2 kernel, and find it in my grub menu. Unfortunately I cannot test with it; when I try to boot it I get a message box saying the system is running in low graphics mode, and when I confirm it the screen flickers between graphics mode (login screen) and console mode so fast that I cannot log in. Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not work, and I need graphics mode to reproduce the problem anyway.
