I spoke too soon. Sound was working the first time I switched from 4.9 to 4.4, though volume couldn't be changed in the UI. However, after I rebooted again (4.4 -> 4.4) I never got sound to work again. Fastboot is not enabled; boot is "thorough". The sound card *did* work on two separate occasions - i.e. was detected successfully. On all subsequent boots it is not detected. See also bugs 1641028 and 1649668. Googling for this device also shows a smattering of other problems that people are having with it. I went back to 4.4.0 - sound works. I tried this and still get the "Dummy Output" when booting on 4.9. Tag added as requested.
