  As far as I read online, last_rx was removed / moved. So the driver source
seems incompatible with newer kernel versions.

  Source: https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/716831/

  Expected behaviour:
  Installing HWE should include all required dependencies (like it does with
Xorg) so that at least the recent LTS version can be fully functional on
hardware that requires a more modern kernel than the default one.

I've tested it with kernel 4.11.0-14-generic and 4.13.0-16-generic, and
it works for both: It compiles and after booting that kernel, Wifi
works.

  bcmwl 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.1 ADT test failure with linux-hwe-

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:

Status in bcmwl source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Currently the DKMS package bcmwl-kernel-source fails to install in
  supported custom kernels that are based on 4.11 or 4.13. That includes
  the current 4.11 hwe-edge and the upcoming 4.13 hwe-edge kernels and
  some of the custom and cloud kernels as well.

  [Test Case]

  Install the bcmwl-kernel-source package with the 4.13 hwe-edge kernel
  from -proposed. The package installation should proceed without any
  errors.

  [Regression Potential]

  Although new patches were added, the regression risk is very low since
  the new changes are conditionally compiled based on the kernel version.

  Besides that the new package was tested with the following kernels in an
  amd64 environment:

  - linux-generic 4.4
  - linux-hwe 4.10
  - linux-hwe-edge 4.11
  - linux-hwe-edge 4.13 (from xenial-proposed)
  - linux-azure 4.11

2017-10-30 Thread Stephan Springer
Actually, there are two bugs here:
 * Build for 4.11 fails, see bug 1713638 (patch included there).
 * Build for 4.13 fails: I can confirm that, but a different patch is needed. I
personally can't run this kernel yet because of that bug.

Lots of similar bugs have been reported, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bugs?orderby=-date_last_updated=0
(for different kernel versions, including also 4.4 and 4.10).

Title:
  API incompatible with HWE edge

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  This is on a Intel Compute Stick STK1AW32SC (Atom x5-Z830) using
  elementaryos-0.4.1-20170814 (Xenial 16.04 LTS) and bcmwl-kernel-source
  6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.1

  The default kernel does not provice all required drivers to operate
  all hardware. Currently installed is HWE.

  This problem happens when installing HWE-edge.

error: ‘struct net_device’ has no member named ‘last_rx’

  As far as I read online, last_rx was removed / moved. So the driver source
seems incompatible with newer kernel versions.

  Source: https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/716831/

  Expected behaviour:
  Installing HWE should include all required dependencies (like it does with
Xorg) so that at least the recent LTS version can be fully functional on
hardware that requires a more modern kernel than the default one.

Title:
  bcmwl 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.1 ADT test failure with linux-hwe-
  edge 4.13.0-16.19~16.04.3

Status in bcmwl package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in bcmwl source package in Xenial:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Currently the DKMS package bcmwl-kernel-source fails to install in
  supported custom kernels that are based on 4.11 or 4.13. That includes
  the current 4.11 hwe-edge and the upcoming 4.13 hwe-edge kernels and
  some of the custom and cloud kernels as well.

  [Test Case]

  Install the bcmwl-kernel-source package with the 4.13 hwe-edge kernel
  from -proposed. The package installation should proceed without any
  errors.

  [Regression Potential]

  Although new patches were added, the regression risk is very low since
  the new changes are conditionally compiled based on the kernel version.

  Besides that the new package was tested with the following kernels in an
  amd64 environment:

  - linux-generic 4.4
  - linux-hwe 4.10
  - linux-hwe-edge 4.11
  - linux-hwe-edge 4.13 (from xenial-proposed)
  - linux-azure 4.11
  - linux-azure-edge 4.13 (which is in process of getting promoted to
xenial-proposed)

  [Original Description]

  Testing failed on:

I have found a patch here:
https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git/tree/trunk/006-linux411.patch?h=packages
/broadcom-wl-dkms

Linked from here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=228110

But maybe it is even fixed upstream already.

Forget my last comment, Wifi does not work correctly with kernel 4.11.

I had to switch back to kernel 4.10 to get a working bcmwl (and Wifi)
again.

2017-09-23 Thread Stephan Springer
I made Wifi work with kernel 4.11 again by removing the package bcmwl-
kernel-source and installing firmware-b43-installer.

But I'm not sure if this is just a workaround or the proper solution.

  sudo service network-manager restart doesn't work too !

Bug description:
  Reported by pageexec

  asmlinkage long compat_sys_recvmmsg(int fd, struct compat_mmsghdr __user
*mmsg,
  unsigned int vlen, unsigned int flags,
  struct compat_timespec __user *timeout)
  {
  int datagrams;
  struct timespec ktspec;

  if (flags  MSG_CMSG_COMPAT)
  return -EINVAL;

  if (COMPAT_USE_64BIT_TIME)
  return __sys_recvmmsg(fd, (struct mmsghdr __user *)mmsg, vlen,
flags | MSG_CMSG_COMPAT,
(struct timespec *) timeout);
  /*...*/

  The timeout pointer parameter is provided by userland (hence the
  __user annotation) but for x32 syscalls it's simply cast to a kernel
  pointer and is passed to __sys_recvmmsg which will eventually directly
  dereference it for both reading and writing. Other callers to
  __sys_recvmmsg properly copy from userland to the kernel first.

  The impact is a sort of arbitrary kernel write-where-what primitive by
  unprivileged users where the to-be-written area must contain valid
  timespec data initially (the first 64 bit long field must be positive
  and the second one must be 1G).

  The bug was introduced by commit
  http://git.kernel.org/linus/ee4fa23c4b (other uses of
  COMPAT_USE_64BIT_TIME seem fine) and should affect all kernels since
  3.4 (and perhaps vendor kernels if they backported x32 support along
  with this code). Note that CONFIG_X86_X32_ABI gets enabled at build
  time and only if CONFIG_X86_X32 is enabled and ld can build x32
  executables.
