on fedora its sudo dnf install alsa-sof-firmware.noarch

on Mint probable sudo apt-get install alsa-sof-firmware.noarch
or what ever your package is called.

do a search for it
sudo apt-cache search firmware

Title:
Lenovo Yoga C940 frequently does thermal shutdown

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in thermald package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in Gentoo Linux:
  New

Bug description:
On a bit higher load and especially if Laptop is charging, very often
Kernel does an emergency thermal shutdown.

thermal thermal_zone3: critical temperature reached (80 C), shutting
  down

It says 80 C, but sensors command shows that temperatures hovering
close to 100C before the shutdown happens.

dmesg is often also full of these (for each core):
mce: CPU2: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total
events = 246766)

When I boot to Windows, it seems that CPU is throttled more
aggressively on load and thermal shutdown doesn't happen with a
similar load, but CPU frequencies drop to 1600 range, while in Ubuntu
  they are 2800 range.

I would rather have more throttling that computer shutting down
randomly without the ability to save work.

  Is there a workaround?

2020-07-09 Thread Tim Ryder
The butter zone for me seems to be 60% which lets the CPU go as high as
2.40GHZ while maxing the temp at around 80C when gaming.

2020-07-09 Thread Tim Ryder
Playing with the settings, if i set the extension to 50% cpu and turbo
boost ON then it will turbo up to 2.00GHZ from 1.30GHZ(when under load)
and still maintain 60-70C during gaming which gives a little extra
performance. Not sure what the sweet spot is yet.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1873083] Re: Lenovo Yoga C940 frequently does thermal shutdown

2020-07-05 Thread Tim Ryder
I installed CPU Power Manger (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/945
/cpu-power-manager/) and set turbo to off in all profiles. Prior to this
running heavy games(divinity original sin 2 or MTG Arena) would push my
temp to 100C then the laptop would shut off. I also tried throttle
stop and that worked to keep from shutting down, but game would stutter
when temp went over 90C. Now with turbo off and heavy gaming temps
hovers between 55 and 70C, no stuttering at all. Like night and day.
Can game without getting hot.

(Yoga c940, Fedora 32)

On bios 1.10.0 that was released yesterday with kernel 5.4(fedora) I no
longer have this issue. The keyboard and mouse work on boot for me.

#46 Still working for me, have not had the issue since I made that
change. I'm on Fedora 31 as well, fully up to date. Maybe I have just
been lucky so far.

@Peter_Lustig

Yes unfortunately that is correct. It makes the laptop more then
usable, but does not fix the later bios issues.

2019-10-30 Thread Tim Ryder
I have a workaround on linux(its not ideal).

On linux if i disable "disable while typing" and then disable "tap to
click" it works. It would seem that the act of disabling and enabling
the touchpad over and over causes it to not enable once and awhile. Its
not ideal to not be able to tap to click, but I no longer have mouse
issues.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391892] [NEW] Resume failes when on AC power

2014-11-12 Thread Tim Ryder
Public bug reported:

laptop: yoga pro 2
running Ubuntu 14.10, also happened on 14.04 - all 64 bit

Laptop fails to resume after being suspended only when on AC power.
When on batter power suspend/resume works fine.

When on AC after resume you can move the mouse and see you desktop but
nothing is clickable. Only way I have been able to get around this is
to switch to a different terminal and reboot the machine.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

Title:
Resume failes when on AC power

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  laptop: yoga pro 2
running Ubuntu 14.10, also happened on 14.04 - all 64 bit

Laptop fails to resume after being suspended only when on AC power.
When on batter power suspend/resume works fine.

When on AC after resume you can move the mouse and see you desktop but
nothing is clickable. Only way I have been able to get around this is to
switch to a different terminal and reboot the machine.

Title:
[Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro] Resume fails when on AC power

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  laptop: yoga pro 2
running Ubuntu 14.10, also happened on 14.04 - all 64 bit

Laptop fails to resume after being suspended only when on AC power.
When on batter power suspend/resume works fine.

When on AC after resume you can move the mouse and see you desktop but
nothing is clickable. Only way I have been able to get around this is to
switch to a different terminal and reboot the machine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391892] Re: [Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro] Resume fails when on AC power

2014-11-12 Thread Tim Ryder
I installed the latest upstream kernel and I am no longer having the
suspend/resume lockup issue. It looks like it is fixed in the upstream
kernels. Thank you for your help on this.
