[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.
Hello, I can confirm that this bug still exists in 20.04. I am using NVidia 340.108 because this is a 12 years old laptop with a completely obsolete GeForce GT230M. Workaround #34 (removing quiet splash) worked but slows down the boot process due to the speed of writing on the console. Workaround #101 work fine: no "garbage" output on the console and no slow down. 12 years old PC booting in 40 sec (including 8.5 due to the BIOS itself). Unfortunately patching manually the grub.cfg does not withstand updates like kernel that will run update-grub, so I hope there will be a better patch soon! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-390 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1845801 Title: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed
Confirmed also on a clean 20.04, kernel 5.4.0-31-generic The time difference between gzip and lz4 is not noticeable by the user: LZ4: Startup finished in 14.815s (firmware) + 3.483s (loader) + 1.879s (kernel) + 23.176s (userspace) = 43.354s graphical.target reached after 23.164s in userspace GZIP: Startup finished in 14.760s (firmware) + 3.441s (loader) + 2.276s (kernel) + 22.805s (userspace) = 43.283s graphical.target reached after 22.775s in userspace Actually, same as one poster above, it's a fraction of second faster with gzip... but that could be in the limits of the precision of this kind of measure. So I'll stick to GZIP until the bug is fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1835660 Title: initramfs unpacking failed Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: "initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on boot up. Switching from lz4 to gzip compression, simply papers over the warning, without any benefits, and slows down boot. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic
Sorry... my "bug" was PEBCAK! It has nothing to do with entropy. I copied the system from an old HDD to a SDD, and in the process didn't change the resume UID that sits in: /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume It was still pointing to a partition UID on the old disk. Hence when the old disk was attached via USB all was normal, but when the disk was not there, the system waited for 30 seconds to see that UID and try to resume. I then replace the old UID with "none" (since I won't be hibernating that machine) did the initram command, and now all is fine. So please, disregard posts #66 to #69, they are unrelated to the topic! My apologies again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1779827 Title: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic Status in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in The Bionic Beaver: Confirmed Status in linux source package in Bionic: Fix Committed Bug description: This was the last OK then my 18.04 hangs after an update this morning. 07:00 AM CEST Last Ok in boot was Started gnome display manager. dispatcher service .. tem changes.pp link was shut down Tried install lightdm from command line and the response was lastest already installed. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic
Sorry, but the bug also happens with 4.15.0-23 I upgraded a PC with a SSD replacing a HDD. So this laptop now only has a SSD which obviously has no spinning part to produce entropy to seed the random generator. Here is what happens: -1) not touching anything, there is a "30 seconds gap" (visible in dmesg) where nothing at all happens, then the boot sequence continues -2) touching the trackpad randomly during the boot sequence makes the random generator initialize quicker (message in dmesg) but there is still the 30 sec gap in spite of the message in the log -3) plugging an external spinning rust to USB fixes the issue! Now the system does not hang for 30 sec waiting anymore... [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1774845] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Booting takes a couple more minutes than normal
Dear Christopher, as I posted "upstream" (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93782), both - Latest ubuntu drm-tip kernel (as of June 3rd) - applying the patch suggested C#12 of the upstream post (on the source I already had of 4.17 rc3 drm-tip) were NOT successful fixing the bug. If you look at C#11 of my initial post upstream (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422#c11), Jim Rees implies that bissecting has already been done and that it boils down to commit: eaf0 "Roll out the helper nonblock tracking" This commit is supposed to be "too difficult" to revert starting from kernel 4.14 (probably due to major rewrites of parts of the drm stack). You are right, things can get worse... and they did: indeed the "bug" was only spitting some messages in the system log prior to the change, and is now triggering several time outs. But for the moment, I'll have to take my chances that this tv-out issue doesn't get worse, since I really don't have time to do a lot more tests. Also, I don't have permanent access to this hardware (it's not mine), and that doesn't help! ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #93782 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93782 ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #106422 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774845 Title: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Booting takes a couple more minutes than normal Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Booting into a installed environment takes a few more minutes than normal. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1774845] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Booting takes a couple more minutes than normal
Hi Christopher, 1) Ok 2) I have tried kernel 4.17.0-994-generic, downloading it from the provided link, same result! For the exact measure of the "damage", a dmesg with the workaround displays messages from 0.00 to 60.0 sec. With the "bug" it goes up to 266 seconds, which means 3 minutes and 20 seconds more than a normal boot! 3) Ok 4) Unfortunately, I am sorry, I have little time to bissect, and already said I am accepting the workaround since I have no TV-Out on that hardware, and that is what the workaround removes. 5) I will test the patches in #C12, since I already have download the drm-debug kernel from intel repo... provided the patch applies to 4.17 I have read that the correction becomes non-trivial after 4.14. I'll report soon on that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774845 Title: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Booting takes a couple more minutes than normal Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Booting into a installed environment takes a few more minutes than normal. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1774845] Re: TV-out timeouts in i965 driver (since recent kernels ~4.4)
About the "bug description", you wrote: "Booting into a installed environment takes a few more seconds than normal." It is not "a few more seconds"... but rather "a few more minutes"! Each timeout is about 10 seconds according to dmesg, and there are about a dozen or more. So it takes at least 2 minutes more! Timeouts also occur out of the booting phase when some program wants graphic access like firefox. So the system is really sluggish. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774845 Title: TV-out timeouts in i965 driver (since recent kernels ~4.4) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Booting into a installed environment takes a few more seconds than normal. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1774845] Re: TV-out timeouts in i965 driver (since recent kernels ~4.4)
Just a short comment, I did the bug report without the workaround, hence the linux boot command line is "standard" as a fresh install, without the parameter "video=SVIDEO-1:d" that workarounds the bug. I imagine it is more significant that way! Should you need a report with the workaround included, I can do that too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-signed in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774845 Title: TV-out timeouts in i965 driver (since recent kernels ~4.4) Status in linux-signed package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: This is the automated ubuntu-bug linux as requested per ticket https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1682921 From the original bug where I posted (1731784) and the ticket I opened upstream, this has been identified by Intel engineers as a regression in the DRI i965 since kernels around 4.4 (where it was working). The regression produces timeouts (10 seconds) when the graphic driver looks whether there is a TV out in the hardware. These timeouts are repeated several times during the boot process, which makes the machine very sluggish. Depending on the hardware, there is a simple workaround which is adding a parameter on the boot command to instruct the graphic driver not to look at TV-out. This workaround is perfect as far as I am concerned, because since the hardware I use does not have TV-out, I am not losing any feature and the bug is not triggered any more. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1682921] Re: sluggish system, kernel errors on Inspiron 1525
Ok, I originally posted on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1731784 1731784 has been marked as duplicate as this one after I did an "upstream" report (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422) and Intel engineers investigated to attach it to a "TV-Out" issue with this proposed workaround by the time they (unlikely) find the bug. I can do a new ticket -when I'll have access to the hardware- if this helps tracking, although that would be another duplicate (or do we say "triplicate" in this case!) For the record, the ticket for upstream was done with the drm-debug kernel that I compiled especially to have more messages dumped in dmesg and help Intel engineers. Do you need the "ubuntu-bug linux" with the kernel I compiled especially (4.17) or shall I issue the command on the stock Ubuntu kernel for 18.04 (4.15)? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1682921 Title: sluggish system, kernel errors on Inspiron 1525 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Starting in 16.10, this machine started taking forever to boot. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1682921] Re: sluggish system, kernel errors on Inspiron 1525
Hi, I will provide the confirmation (or not!) that this is a complete workaround, along with the same confirmation on the "upstream" ticket I opened for that bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422 Same as Kevin, the hardware is not mine, and I have to wait to have direct access to it to really check that all goes well (the person using the hardware is not an I.T. person, and can only switch it on and do basic things) The test will be done next week (between June 2nd and June 10th) The 'clean' workaround would then be: - edit /etc/default/grub and replace: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" with: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" - issue sudo update-grub That is to be sure the option sticks even when patched kernels are proposed by the repository. ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #106422 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1682921 Title: sluggish system, kernel errors on Inspiron 1525 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Starting in 16.10, this machine started taking forever to boot. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1731784] Re: system slow to start, kernel trace on Inspiron 1525
A workaround was offered "upstream" in Comment #11: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=106422#c11 I tested it successfully so far on my hardware (Inspiron 1525). 1. add "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to your kernel boot options I still have to confirm the workaround has no other important side effect. Since I am not in front of the PC (it is 1000km away, and I am accessing it through SSH), I can't really see what is happening nor check all the graphic acceleration is still there. This test will be done later, 1st week of June, when I'll have access to the PC. Then I'll have to find how to make a specific option stick cleanly in grub with new patched kernels! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1731784 Title: system slow to start, kernel trace on Inspiron 1525 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The system is slow to start / log in. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1731784] Re: system slow to start, kernel trace on Inspiron 1525
More information. I have narrowed it down: 16.04.1 - kernel 4.4.0-31-generic ==> Works OK with messages ("encoder detached but still enabled on pipe A.") No visible slowdown apart for 3 or 4 stack traces in the log. 16.04.2 - kernel 4.8.0-36-generic ==> Shows the "time outs" bug So there must have been a change that is affecting i915 between kernels 4.4. and 4.8 Steps to reproduce: - live boot on 16.04.1 - see all is Ok apart from some messages in the log - live boot on 16.04.2 - see the boot takes much much more time and there are numerous timeouts messages.
Hi there, I am having this issue too on the same hardware. This laptop is currently running 14.04 32 bits. With 14.04 32 bits, there is a message in the log, but it has no effect but spitting messages in the log! With 18.04 64bits live, there is the "flip_done timed out" issue. Each one seems to take 10 seconds, then after some attempts it continues normally. Once it has booted (it takes ~5 minutes due to the "timeouts"), all seems to work fine. I made an attempt booting 18.04 64bits with "nomodeset", the boot time is normal (for a live with this kind of hardware) but we then loose graphic acceleration and it makes it impossible for example to watch a HD movie, also firefox is noticeably slower same as GLXGears. I had 16.04.1 on my USB drive, and it was still working with 16.04.1 (just some messages in the log). With 16.04.4 there is the same bug as with 18.04. That should narrow down the regression between the kernels of 16.04.1 and 16.04.4 Here are some complementary informations for 14.04 and 18.04: _ 14.04 32bits: __ $ uname -a; lsb_release -a Linux rose-Inspiron-1525 3.13.0-145-generic #194-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 5 15:18:37 UTC 2018 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux No LSB modules are available.
