[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1440446] Re: Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

2015-04-14 Thread descending3rds
Christopher,

I have some more information. As stated in the initial bug report, the latest
kernel (3.13.0-48-generic) with KMS enabled gets me to the password prompt for
decrypting my root, and the graphics appear to be ok, but the keyboard/mouse do
not respond.
On a hunch, I rebooted with this kernel, disconnecting the keyboard until after
the password prompt. Upon reconnection,
I am able to use the keyboard, and the root successfully decrypts, but again
the boot stalls before getting
to the login screen. In this case, however, I am able to ssh into a shell and
get access to more detailed information which may help with diagnosing the
failure of KMS in relation to the radeon driver. I attach Xorg.0.log and the
output of dmesg.

Title:
  Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
  Release:14.04
  Kernel 3.13.0-48-generic

I expected to be apple to boot to the password prompt for my encrypted root
(and beyond) with correct graphics.
Instead I found that my keyboard was not recognised after grub, so I am not
able to decrypt my root or login

  More detailed explanation:

I have Ubuntu installed on my 17'' core-duo intel imac, with an encrypted
root partition.
Version 12.04 with kernel 3.5.0-17-generic worked ok, but I updated to the
LTS version 14.04.
The system now freezes before asking for my encryption password when booting
(I am using EFI with grub2)
with my old kernel (3.5.0-17-generic) and with no args on the kernel command
line. If I put nomodeset the boot
progresses to the encryption password and I can successfully login, however
the video is completely scrambled (I literally cannot
make out anything). Having tried many ways to fix the video, I tried the
latest kernel (3.13.0-48-generic). In this case
the boot gets to the password and the graphics appear to be ok, but the
keyboard/mouse do not respond. Again I tried many fixes, unsuccesfully. I
installed the extras so as to have usbhid, mac_hid etc, and found that the
behaviour now reverted precisely to that outlined above for 3.5.0-17-generic;
that is scrambled graphics but successful login (with nomodeset), and freezing
before
reaching the password prompt (without nomodeset).
I tried manually adding only the hid modules to my
initrd.img-3.13.0-48-generic built prior to install of extra, but found
graphics again ok but still no keyboard !

This report was made via a ssh session after booting with the
  scrambled video.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1440446] Re: Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

2015-04-13 Thread descending3rds
Christopher, I have just tested the latest mainline kernel, that is v4.0 from
13-Apr-2015. Exactly the sme behaviour as
v4.0-rc7. I note from the boot log that when KMS is enabled usbcore is
registering drivers usbhid and uas, then the framebuffer
is switched from EFI VGA to radeondrmfb after which there are no more messages
and the boot stalls.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1440446] Re: Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

2015-04-13 Thread descending3rds
Christopher,

I have tested the latest mainline kernel 4.0-rc7 which includes the usb hid
drivers. Using KMS, the boot process stalls
somewhere between enabling the radeon KMS and loading the usb drivers
(according to the boot messages), and thus
I can neither decrypt my root nor login. With KMS disabled the boot proceeds
and I can in fact login. Of course without
KMS and with no UMS in the radeon driver the system is now using software
rendering and is consequently extremely sluggish.

Thus, while technically the keyboard is working and the video is no longer
scrambled, there is no hardware acceleration
with the radeon driver, and so I am tagging this as bug-exists.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1440446] Re: Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

2015-04-04 Thread descending3rds
Christopher,

According to my computer (Mac side) the bios is in fact already the latest
available for the model iMac4,1
(not iMac14,1 as I suspect you probably had in mind). Thus, I am afraid there
is no more information I can give
at this point. Therefore I am marking this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you, I appreciate the time and effort you and others put into
this software!

Title:
  Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
  Release:14.04
  Kernel 3.13.0-48-generic

I expected to be apple to boot to the password prompt for my encrypted root
(and beyond) with correct graphics.
Instead I found that my keyboard was not recognised after grub, so I am not
able to decrypt my root or login

  More detailed explanation:

I have Ubuntu installed on my 17'' core-duo intel imac, with an encrypted
root partition.
Version 12.04 with kernel 3.5.0-17-generic worked ok, but I updated to the
LTS version 14.04.
The system now freezes before asking for my encryption password when booting
(I am using EFI with grub2)
with my old kernel (3.5.0-17-generic) and with no args on the kernel command
line. If I put nomodeset the boot
progresses to the encryption password and I can successfully login, however
the video is completely scrambled (I literally cannot
make out anything). Having tried many ways to fix the video, I tried the
latest kernel (3.13.0-48-generic). In this case
the boot gets to the password and the graphics appear to be ok, but the
keyboard/mouse do not respond. Again I tried many fixes, unsuccesfully. I
installed the extras so as to have usbhid, mac_hid etc, and found that the
behaviour now reverted precisely to that outlined above for 3.5.0-17-generic;
that is scrambled graphics but successful login (with nomodeset), and freezing
before
reaching the password prompt (without nomodeset).
I tried manually adding only the hid modules to my
initrd.img-3.13.0-48-generic built prior to install of extra, but found
graphics again ok but still no keyboard !

This report was made via a ssh session after booting with the
  scrambled video.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1440446] [NEW] Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

2015-04-04 Thread descending3rds
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
Release:14.04
Kernel 3.13.0-48-generic

I expected to be apple to boot to the password prompt for my encrypted root
(and beyond) with correct graphics.
Instead I found that my keyboard was not recognised after grub, so I am not
able to decrypt my root or login

More detailed explanation:

I have Ubuntu installed on my 17'' core-duo intel imac, with an encrypted root
partition.
Version 12.04 with kernel 13.5.0-17-generic worked ok, but I updated to the LTS
version 14.04.
The system now freezes before asking for my encryption password when booting (I
am using EFI with grub2)
with my old kernel (13.5.0-17-generic) and with no args on the kernel command
line. If I put nomodeset the boot
progresses to the encryption password and I can successfully login, however the
video is completely scrambled (I literally cannot
make out anything). Having tried many ways to fix the video, I tried the latest
kernel (3.13.0-48-generic). In this case
the boot gets to the password and the graphics appear to be ok, but the
keyboard/mouse do not respond. Again I tried many fixes, unsuccesfully. I

behaviour now reverted precisely to that outlined above for 13.5.0-17-generic;
that is scrambled graphics but successful login (with nomodeset), and freezing

reaching the password prompt (without nomodeset).
I tried manually adding only the hid modules to my initrd.img-3.13.0-48-generic
built prior to install of extra, but found graphics again ok but still no
keyboard !

This report was made via a ssh session after booting with the scrambled
video.

kernel (3.13.0-48-generic). In this case
the boot gets to the password, but the keyboard/mouse does not respond. Again I
tried many fixes, unsuccesfully. I installed the extras
so as to have usbhid, mac_hid etc, and found that the behaviour now reverted
precisely to that outlined above for 13.5.0-17-generic;
that is scrambled graphics but successful login (with nomodeset), and ok
graphics but no keyboard (without nomodeset).
I tried manually adding only the hid modules to my initrd.img-3.13.0-48-generic
built prior to install of extra, but found graphics again
ok but still no keyboard !

Title:
Keyboard and Mouse don't work with latest Kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  1)
  Description: Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS
  Release: 14.04

  2) Linux / The kernel

  3) I expected my usb devices to work on the login page

  4) They don't work :)

  ...

Upon the upgrade to kernel 3.13.0-48-generic my USB devices don't
work, so when I did a normal launch of my computer, I could not sign
into it since my usb devices were not working.

I was able to sign and and use my computer as normal when I revert to
  kernel 3.13.0-46-generic.
