[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-05-28 Thread jhouse
Kernel 4.4.11 (from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/)
seems to work with the Nouveau driver, without a freeze. (have only
tested for a short period of time thus far).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-05-18 Thread jhouse
Using the 4.6.0 kernel, and NVidia driver (rather than Nouveau) I can
plug in HDMI monitor and not freeze. (my previous post reporting a
freeze with 4.6 kernel was using Nouveau driver).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-05-18 Thread jhouse
Actually I just tried the 4.6 kernel that was officially released 2 days
ago, and I still get a freeze when attaching monitor to HDMI.However
the symptoms are different.

The external monitor does get the desktop drawn on it, and I can move
the mouse around, and between the monitors. But the interface is
otherwise frozen: the clock on the screen stops "ticking" and no
windows can be interacted with. Also cannot hit CTRL+ALT+F3 to get to a
tty screen.

Furthermore the logging in syslog is different:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-05-18 Thread jhouse
Backports of these fixes to 4.4 kernels are badly needed. This bug
affects (prevents use of HDMI port) anyone who has one of several newer
generations Dell laptop models who is trying to run most any linux
distribution using 4.4 kernels (such as Ubuntu 16.04). These XPS models
are selling fast, so the number of people this affects is increasing
quickly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1568865] Re: [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-04-25 Thread jhouse
With Gnome Classic, when I plug in a monitor I get two blank screens and
a hang (rather than flickering screens then a hang) - only tried this
once.

Also for clarification I'm using the official 16.04 release of ubuntu
gnome. 4.4.0-21 kernel.

I have not tried with Unity (on 16.04) but it hung with unity on 15.10
(and older kernel) when I tried a few weeks ago.

  [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe
  B FIFO underrun

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Running Gnome-Shell on ubuntu 16.04 on my Dell XPS 15 9550 laptop
using Intel graphics (Nvidia card turned off), I get this error in
syslog when plugging in an external monitor (HDMI).

  Apr 11 14:28:38 miaco kernel: [ 2616.604641]
  [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe
  B FIFO underrun

Meanwhile both screens flash and show corruption. Most of the time
this has caused a hang that needs a hard power off to get out of, but
occasionally removing the external monitor is enough to get going
again and so I've been able to find this message in the logs.

Note that when using Nvidia (proprietary) drivers and Unity DE I do
not have this problem; so it seems to be related to the intel drivers,
or possibly Gnome Shell's use of them.

Happy to help if I can (would like to be able to use external
  monitors!)

2016-04-25 Thread jhouse
Just noting that I have the very same problems - on the same laptop
model.

[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B
FIFO underrun

(I also got the flickering screen followed by lock-up with Ubuntu 15.10 (and
older kernel) though I don't know if it was the same error message).

8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Using a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Ubuntu 14.04 the wifi keeps dropping. Sometimes
all the time, at times after a bit longer (~10 min). A few packages ago it
didn't drop, but was really, really, slow. Now it completely drops. Adding the
following to modprobe.conf made no change:
  options iwlwifi 11ac_disable=1
  options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

After each new row I ran:
  sudo modprobe -rfv iwlwifi
  sudo modprobe -v iwlwifi

Tried turning off the power management of wlan0 without any change.

WORKAROUND: Within 2 m I have full speed and no disconnects.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-10 Thread jhouse
Hi Christopher, since I have it working now, I presume you wouldn't
want me to gather the bug info now, right? Should I boot from a live
14.04 image (via usb thumbdrive) or something?

Title:

David Carter - that's no good! My guess would be that you now have a
missing firmware problem.

Run the following command in a terminal: "ls /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7*"
you should have at least one file listed.

I actually have two:
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7260-7.ucode
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7260-8.ucode

If you don't then you definitely have missing firmware . If you do have
a file, you might not have the correct one for your edition of the
wireless card.

Note that I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 (rather than clean install), and I
had put the -7.ucode version of the firmware file in place months back
in order to get the card to work at all (the older kernels didn't
support this card at all).

Here's a summary of how I installed backports for this card and the
firmware:

Download the ucode file for the 3.13 kernel here:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/iwlwifi?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=iwlwifi-7260-ucode-22.0.6.0.tgz#Firmware

Download backports for 3.13 here:
http://drvbp1.linux-foundation.org/~mcgrof/rel-html/backports/

Un-tar the downloaded files:

tar xvf backports-3.13.2-1.tar.xz
tar xvf iwlwifi-7260*

Then build backports for iwlwifi

cd backports-3.13.2-1/
make defconfig-iwlwifi
make
sudo make install

Then copy the firmware ucode file to /lib/firmware
cd ..
cd iwlwifi*
sudo cp iwlwifi* /lib/firmware

I can confirm 24 hours of goodness after installing backports 3.13.2-1
on top of 14.04 . Something in there fixes the problem.

I downloaded and built backports 3.13.2-1 since posting my last
comment. After rebooting, and so far, wireless seems much more stable
and speedy. Will post further update after I've got more hours under
the belt with this.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305305] Re: 8086:08b1 [Sony VAIO SVP1321M2E] Wifi keeps dropping.

2014-05-08 Thread jhouse
I have the same problems. I'm on a Sager laptop with an Intel 7260AC .
Worked fine for months (since last September) with previous releases
(had used backports and was most recently on kernel 3.11.0-20 before
upgrade to 14.04).

Connection now exhibits: slowness (sporadically), drops (anwhere from
3 minutes after connecting to 2 hours after), and loss of connection
after screen timeout lock and logging back in (which may just be the
same problem as the time).

When in the state of the connection having dropped, the listing of
wireless connections available to connect to shows all of my neighbors'
routers, but not mine.

Disabling wireless connections and then immediately re-enabling will re-
establish the connection for 2-120 minutes.

I will also note that when initially connecting, I will have good signal
strength indicated in the status widget (e.g. 3-4 bands) but that after
some minutes it shows weaker (1-2 bands).

All this without moving the physical location of the computer (distance
to router).
