[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808183] Re: ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

2019-01-28 Thread latimerio
In the last couple of days my system boots as slow again as before the fix.
I am currently on linux-image-unsigned-4.15.0-43-generic.
So there must have something changed along the way which brought back the bug.

Server console is extremely slow on ast, after the upgrade from 16.04 to
  18.04.

  [Fix]
Remove firmware/bootloader configured framebuffer device before probing.

  [Test]
User confirmed the patch fixes the issue.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. The fix is in stable tree, limits to one specific device, and other
DRM drivers already do this for a while.

  ===Original Bug Report===
After the upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 my server console is extremely slow.
It looks similar to the youtube clips mentioned in the problem described
here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2399941
My server is attached to a KVM switch with VGA cable to a 1920x1080 LCD.
It runs on an ASUS P9D-X board.
Before the upgrade everything was fine.
Now it is so slow that it sometimes even hangs during boot and goes into an
emergency console where I just can do a ctrl-alt-delete as described in bug
1802469

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808183] Re: ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

2019-01-28 Thread latimerio
The system boot is so slow that two times it got stuck in emergency mode saying
that some configured disk drives were not found.
Strangely when I use a Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot from emergency mode, the system
boots fast.
I used UKTools to upgrade to kernel 4.15.18-041518-generic but the problem is
still there.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808183] Re: ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

2019-01-29 Thread latimerio
OK, I installed the 4.15.0-44-generic kernel and my system is back to
normal.

Still I have 3 questions?
 1. What made the boot become slow again when there was the kernel fix from
linux-image-unsigned-4.15.0-43-generic still in place?

 2. Why does the system boot fast when I do a Ctrl-Alt-Del in a stuck
emergency shell?

 3. When will the fix find its way in the normal kernel release so that
kernel updates will not break the system again?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1791193] Re: errores dmesg

2018-10-12 Thread latimerio
it may not be a bug but a flaw in logwatch as the message just says that an
error collector has been initialized so it is more likely an info.
Alas logwatch gets triggered by the word "Errors" and whows this in its report.
So this may be the real issue.

Hello Christopher,
thanks for getting back to me.
apport-collect doesn't work as there is no browser on my machine.
My machine is a server and I have only the text console.
apport-collect 1411361 just shows a message at the bottom without any
progress and not giving any hints how to proceed.
I then tried from a putty terminal but this failed also.

In the meantime I did find that shutdown on newer kernels work when I
disable wake on PCI in my BIOS.
As my LAN card is PCIe I have now successfully upgraded to kernel
3.13.0-71-generic #114-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 1 02:34:22 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and I can shutdown the server while still being able to wake it from LAN
and from RTC.
With kernel 3.13.0-43 I didn't need to disable WoL on PCI and I did not
have a problem to shutdown the server.
I can live with the workaround but still something must have changed so
that kernels after 3.13.0-43 automatically restarted the server when
wake on PCI is enabled.
I use WoL to wake my home server whenever a client PC tries to access it
and I use wake from RTC to periodically wake it, to perform maintenance
tasks.

kernel 3.13.0-44 doesn't poweroff (shutdown) with WoL enabled

Bug description:
This bug is similar to Bug #1346269.
I successfully used to use WoL (wake on lan) since Sep. 2014 with Ubuntu
14.04.1 LTS on my ASUS P9D-X Server.
After I updated to kernel 3.13.0-44 this feature broke and my server always
restarted when I issued a 'poweroff'.
I disabled WoL for PCI and PCIe in the APM settings in BIOS and poweroff
worked as it should, but then Wake on LAN is gone which is not a nice setting
for a server in a closet.
So I reverted to 3.13.0-43 and the problem was gone.
Thus something in kernel -44 must have changed to the worse.
Please check what has happened and fix this issue again in upcoming kernel
releases.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1325821] [NEW] logrotate error on rotating winbind

2014-06-02 Thread latimerio
Public bug reported:

I frequently get the following error from logrotate on some of my 12.04
LTS machines.

 /etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
 logrotate_script: line 1: kill: (1660) - No such process
error: error running non-shared postrotate script for
/var/log/samba/log.winbindd of '/var/log/samba/log.winbindd '
 run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

/etc/logrotate.d/winbind has the default content shown below.
The kill command returns an error if for whatever reason the PID listed in
/var/run/samba/winbindd.pid is not running.

Thus the kill line should be improved to something like
  [ -f /var/run/samba/winbind.pid ]  && { PID=$(cat
/var/run/samba/winbindd.pid) ; ps -p $PID | grep -q $PID && kill -HUP $PID ; }

/var/log/samba/log.winbindd {
weekly
missingok
rotate 7
postrotate
[ ! -f /var/run/samba/winbindd.pid ] || kill -HUP `cat
/var/run/samba/winbindd.pid`
endscript
compress
notifempty
}

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1346269] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 won't shut down (reboots)

2014-09-13 Thread latimerio
I can confirm this bug.

I just upgraded my home server from 12.04.5 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS and now the
system always reboots after a poweroff / shutdown -h command.
The only way to shut the system off is to press the power button when it's in
the POST phase.

If I issue a "poweroff" command the server shuts down and then instantly
reboots.
I tried to set acpi=force in /etc/default/grub but this did not help.

With 12.04 I had no problem with poweroff and I used to use Wake On LAN to boot
up my server whenever a client needs it.
Fortunately I had cloned my old system disk before the upgrade so I was able to
revert to 12.04 without a fuss.
As expected the problem is not there with the 12.04 disk.
Thus it is not the hardware or BIOS which causes the problem but definetely
something in 14.04.

Was there possibly some major change in 14.04 with respect to ACPI behaviour?
Ubuntu 14.04 is at its server release .1 but with not being able to put my home
server to sleep it proves to be totally useless to me.

P.S. My Mobo is an MSI P9D-X with a Xeon CPU E3-1230L v3

I also set WOL off on the NIC that was plugged in (only one of the 4
onboard NICs is connected at present, for testing) with sudo ethtool

I've updated my BIOS to the latest version.

I've probably tried more that I've forgotten to list here - I've
  exhausted my options!

I'm at a loose end now - no idea what to do next to further
troubleshoot it, has anyone else had any similar problems on C224, or
does anyone know what logs I should be inspecting, or how I can
  generate further debug logs?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1346269] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 won't shut down (reboots)

I found that I needed a BIOS update to my ASUS (MSI was a typo in my 1st
comment) P9D-X which fixed the hardware dependent issue.
Thus for me the reboot issue is no more now.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808183] Re: ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

2019-02-08 Thread latimerio
I cannot confirm that 4.15.18-041518-generic works stable.
It did work for a while though..
Since a few days my boot is slow again and yesterday and today the system again
got stuck in emergency mode because of too slow boot.
Thus I think there is more to it than just the kernel.
The only explanation I do have is that there is some dependency between the
kernel and other packages which get updated when I run apt dist-upgrade.
I am also puzzled that my system boots very fast when I do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE
when it is stuck in emergency mode.
So there is a difference between a warm start and a cold boot.
I suppose that there is some hardware initialization which is done too late
during cold boot but makes the following warm start fast.

Title:
ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After the upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 my server console is extremely slow.
It looks similar to the youtube clips mentioned in the problem described
here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2399941
My server is attached to a KVM switch with VGA cable to a 1920x1080 LCD.
It runs on an ASUS P9D-X board.
Before the upgrade everything was fine.
Now it is so slow that it sometimes even hangs during boot and goes into an
emergency console where I just can do a ctrl-alt-delete as described in bug

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1808183] Re: ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

2018-12-16 Thread latimerio
I have installed the kernel and rebooted the server 3 times.
All reboots were as fast as the previous ubuntu 16.04.
So I think your fix has solved the problem.
Thanks a lot.

I did get a warning during the update of the initramfs though
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/ast_dp501_fw.bin for module ast
But it may be that this has been already there before and I just didn't see it.

The whole issue leaves 2 open question to me:
1. Has there been a change in the VESA/AST mechanism from 16.04 to 18.04 ?
2. Or is there another explanation for the different behavior after the upgrade
to 18.04?
