[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347802] [NEW] Relentless ata* error messages
Public bug reported: uname -a: Linux beefy 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I've been getting tons of error messages like these since 12.04: Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.531777] ata9: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310) Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.531797] ata9: EH complete Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546141] ata9: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x406 action 0xe frozen Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546146] ata9: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546151] ata9: SError: { PHYInt CommWake DevExch } Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546159] ata9: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546163] ata9: hard resetting link Sometimes, the messages will be VERY consistent, writing to the log file almost non-stop. Other times, the messages will be sparse. But they're always there. Rebooting seems to randomly alter the frequency of the messages. I've tried swapping hardware (including disk drives and SATA cables), altering BIOS storage options (AHCI mode, IDE mode), disabling SATA hot swapping, and disabling SATA power management. None of these attempts halted the messages. Otherwise, operation of the computer seems normal. Please let me know if you need additional information. Thanks! Thanks! [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1347802] Re: Relentless ata* error messages
Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue? It definitely occurred in earlier versions of Ubuntu. The earliest I remember it occurring was back with Ubuntu 12.04, but it may have also occurred in version 11.10 or earlier (though I can't be sure). As per the instructions that you provided, I installed the latest mainline kernel the problem still exists. Marking this kernel-bug- exists-upstream'. uname -a: Linux beefy.wysu.local 3.16.0-031600rc6-generic #201407210035 SMP Mon Jul 21 04:36:11 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux cat /var/log/syslog: Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.135217] ata9: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310) Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.135233] ata9: EH complete Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.148775] ata9: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x406 action 0xe frozen Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.148781] ata9: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.148786] ata9: SError: { PHYInt CommWake DevExch } Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.148794] ata9: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.148798] ata9: hard resetting link Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.870881] ata9: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310) Jul 23 14:51:30 beefy kernel: [ 208.870902] ata9: EH complete Jul 23 14:51:31 beefy kernel: [ 209.078780] ata9: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x406 action 0xe frozen Jul 23 14:51:31 beefy kernel: [ 209.078786] ata9: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed Jul 23 14:51:31 beefy kernel: [ 209.078791] ata9: SError: { PHYInt CommWake DevExch } Jul 23 14:51:31 beefy kernel: [ 209.078799] ata9: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps Jul 23 14:51:31 beefy kernel: [ 209.078803] ata9: hard resetting link ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1347802 Title: Relentless ata* error messages Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: uname -a: Linux beefy 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I've been getting tons of error messages like these since 12.04: Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.531777] ata9: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 310) Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.531797] ata9: EH complete Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546141] ata9: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x406 action 0xe frozen Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546146] ata9: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546151] ata9: SError: { PHYInt CommWake DevExch } Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546159] ata9: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps Jul 23 12:25:21 beefy kernel: [ 2378.546163] ata9: hard resetting link Sometimes, the messages will be VERY consistent, writing to the log file almost non-stop. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1122377] Re: Audio Science Sound Card firmware does not match the driver supplied by the kernel
I'd like to suggest reopening this bug for 14.04. Upon a recent upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04, this message was generated in dmesg: [ 23.196286] snd_asihpi :04:02.0: probe 104c:a106,175c:6500,0010 [ 23.646352] snd_asihpi :04:02.0: Incompatible firmware version DSP image 9F60 != Driver 40A01 As you can see, the driver in the kernel is version 4.10.1 but the firmware in linux-firmware does not match. The correct firmware can be downloaded from here: http://www.audioscience.com/internet/download/drivers/released/v4/10/01/dspbins41001.7z -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux-firmware in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1122377 Title: Audio Science Sound Card firmware does not match the driver supplied by the kernel Status in “linux-firmware” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in “linux-firmware” source package in Precise: Fix Released Status in “linux-firmware” source package in Raring: Fix Released Bug description: Affects: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS Linux streamtest 3.2.0-37-generic-pae #58-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 24 15:51:02 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Summary: When using an Audioscience ASI6522 sound card, the firmware provided in /lib/firmware/asihpi/ does not match the driver supplied by the Linux kernel, snd_asihpi (snd-asihpi.ko). This prevents the use of the hardware by Alsa. What is expected to happen: The correct firmware for the installed hardware to be loaded onto the hardware. What actually happens: The incorrect firmware is present, and thus, unable to be loaded onto the hardware. Evidence from dmesg: [ 6115.574089] ASIHPI driver 4.08.00 [ 6115.574215] snd_asihpi :03:04.0: probe 104c:a106,175c:6500,0020 [ 6115.650366] snd_asihpi :03:04.0: Incompatible firmware version DSP image 40313 != Driver 40800 [ 6115.650433] hpi6205.c:568 DSP code load failed [ 6115.652532] hpioctl.c:430 adapter_probe failed Workaround: As a work around, one can download the correct version of firmware from the manufacturer's website and manually place it in /lib/firmware/asihpi/. The following step-by-step assumes you are using kernel 3.2.0-37-generic-pae which uses the 4.08.00 version of the sound card driver. 1. Download the driver source: http://www.audioscience.com/internet/download/drivers/released/v4/08/00/hpklinux-4.08.00.tar.bz2 2. Extract the source: tar -xf hpklinux-4.08.00.tar.bz2 3. Rename the existing firmware directory, just to be safe: sudo mv /lib/firmware/asihpi{,.bak} 4. Copy the correct firmware to the exepcted location: sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/asihpi; sudo cp hpklinux-4.08.00/firmware/*.bin /lib/firmware/asihpi/ 5. Reload alsa: sudo alsa reload To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1122377/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
