[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848771] Re: Reboot after resume from suspend (deep)
Given that https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1888939 has been marked as duplicate of this issue (when it was meant to be about the fact that the grub menu doesn't provide any non-broken kernel to boot from, as all are affected by this issue): While the core issue gets investigated and fixed, it is URGENT that an earlier, non-broken kernel is made readily available to simple human beinig like me that just need to use their computer. Well then the issue is that tehre is no stable kernel I can boot from! [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1848771] Re: Reboot after resume from suspend (deep)
Someone mentioned disabling bluetooth "both in Linux and in the BIOS". I don't have such an option in the BIOS, I disabled it in linux and it didn't help. Actually I'm a bit skeptical of the reports saying that this or that fixed the issue: I'd like to know how many times they have tried suspending and for how long they have been using their laptop after whatever change they say have fixed the issue. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1697567] Re: something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed
How the fuck can this still be unfixed? This is a critical bug that causes a computer to suddenly switch off, loosing data, and it potentially DAMAGES HARDWARE. This has been known for at least 3 years, nothing has been done and... OMG I now see the importance is set to medium, who is the IDIOT that set the importance to medium?? Is there at least a workaround? I need to force my fan to spin at the maximum speed, since the OS is not controlling it properly and my CPU is BURNING. Also, this recently got worse. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, when I boot and the boot menu shows up, the fan used to spin much faster when the computer was hot. That proved that either the OS, which loads afterwards, would start controlling the speed and keeping it too low, while during the boot menu screen the hardware was left uncontrolled and knew better, OR that grub used to load some sort of driver that did a better job than ubuntu does at controlling the fan speed. Well, that doesn't happen anymore, since a recent update. Now, when my computer gets too hot and switches itself off, or when I see it is getting too hot and I restart it, during the boot screen the fan does not spin faster, it goes at the same insufficient speed as it does during normal OS operation, or even slower. I guess grub has been updated to control the fan in the same broken way that used to only kick in later in the boot process. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697567 Title: something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Something in Ubuntu keeps my laptop's cooler fan from going at the speed that would be needed to keep the temperature within its safe range. The proof that something is wrong is that the computer overheats to the point that, first, the CPU starts to slow down to protect itself (you can tell the CPU has less power because trivial processes that barely do any work suddenly are consuming great percentages of CPU) and eventually even the computer shuts down (abruptly) to prevent itself from burning **AND** the fan speed doesn't get even close to its maximum speed while all this is happening. Note: I keep thermald turned off because of issue 1600599. I also disabled intel_powerclamp and intel_rapl to rule out that they were just kicking in before it's actually necessary. This has mitigated the issue, I'm pretty sure, but it has not solved it completely. Yes, my fan is full of dust and doesn't do its job very well, but if that alone was the issue, the fan should reach its top speed well before the CPU reaches critical temperature. The definitive proof that the fan *can* go faster is that, when the computer is overheating, if I restart it, at the grub screen, the fan spins a lot faster. Then, as the OS boots, its speed drops. Then you can also hear as the speed slowly diminishes, as if it was gradually slowing down because it's managing to keep the temperature under control. Except that the temperature keeps going up. Even by just suspending and resuming, the fan speed gets a noticeable boost (not as huge as by rebooting, for some reason), which is utter nonsense, and then soon slows down again. The huge increase in fan speed at restart just before boot (note: only when the computer is hot) proves that not only the fan can spin faster than the OS lets it, but also that the hardware "KNOWS" how fast it should spin. Either the hardware, assuming that no driver has been loaded yet when presented the grub screen, or some kind of more primitive driver that is loaded together with grub, I don't know. SOMETHING does know how to control the fan speed properly, and something that is started during boot imposes a wrong, lower speed. I assume that the fan speed is not regulated by a simple fixed map from temperature values to fan speed values. That would completely explain the behaviour (the fan is not as efficient as it is supposed to be, hence the predetermined speed values function of temperature are not enough), but it would be incredibly stupid. Please tell me that's not the case. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1786625] [NEW] "find" command throws nonsense error message
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Run this command from a terminal: $ find . -name *.txt Expected result: It should list all the files found in the current directory or any descendant directory whose name ends in ".txt". It may or may not find matching files, depending on whether there are or there aren't. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 958661] Re: "Receive files over bluetooth" randomly stops working - plus setting should be available under BlueTooth settings
Now, several minutes after turning on Bluetooth on the computer, it was finally visible from the phone. So from the phone I tried sending a file, and I got the screen (on the phone) that I attached. It said: "Type the pairing code then press Return or Enter". (note: "the" pairing code. What pairing code? If I am supposed to type it on the computer, which "press return or enter" seems to suggest, then it should show up on the phone - or viceversa) So on the computer some prompt was supposed to show up, but it didn't. A small padlock showed up in the bluetooth icon on the computer, but there was no prompt for a code anywhere, nor did it show up by clicking on the bluetooth icon. After a while the operation timed out from the phone. Then I tried again. This time, at the prompt "type the pairing code then press Return or Enter" (again the one in the screenshot) I tapped on "pair". (the prompt is quite ambiguous: am I supposed to type the code, which I can't possibly know, in which case the "pair" button shouldn't be necessary, or should I press "pair" and *then* I'll be shown the code on the phone and prompted to insert it on the computer, in which case the message is confusing because it's telling me to enter it now??) So I tapped on "pair", and... The file was sent succesfully!! No code showed up anywhere and I didn't have to insert it anywhere. Of course I had paired these two particular devices before, literally years ago (and I'm not abusing the word "literally"). The UI of the whole process is a fucking mess on both sides, both Ubuntu AND Android. There are a bunch of bugs on both sides. Sharing files via bluetooth is a hell. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bluez in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/958661 Title: "Receive files over bluetooth" randomly stops working - plus setting should be available under BlueTooth settings Status in bluez package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I often send image files via bluetooth from my android phone to my ubuntu PC. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1697567] Re: something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed
The importance of this bug should obviously be critical, not medium. It meets all the criteria, plus it may even cause hardware damage. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Expired => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697567 Title: something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Something in Ubuntu keeps my laptop's cooler fan from going at the speed that would be needed to keep the temperature within its safe range. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1697567] Re: something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed
I dubt this has anything to do with the kernel. I'm not testing the upstream kernel. Please don't leave this bug in the "incomplete" status or it will starve without anybody doing anything to fix it. > Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? > Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular > problem? I don't know. I have been observing this for years. Ages ago, however, on another computer with Ubuntu 12.something I didn't experience the issue, and I can tell because the fan was also old and would not do its job very well (much worse than my current one), and it was spinning very fast all the time as one would expect in that situation. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697567 Title: something prevents the cooler fan from spinning as fast as needed Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Something in Ubuntu keeps my laptop's cooler fan from going at the speed that would be needed to keep the temperature within its safe range. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 958661] Re: "Receive files over bluetooth" randomly stops working - plus setting should be available under BlueTooth settings
WTF it's been FOUR F***ING YEARS and the problem has only got worse. Now the workaround in comment 11 no longer works. There's NO WAY to receive files over bluetooth. They are systematically rejected. It worked fine until yesterday, but now I systematically get "the remote bluetooth device rejected the request". [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1485378] [NEW] [REGRESSION] bluetooth visibility turns off
Public bug reported: I had Ubuntu 14.04 and I had the Bluetooth Visibility set to On. (in the submenu under the bluetooth tray icon, where it reads Visible) It used to be always on, I didn't have to turn it on every time I wanted my computer to be visible. I upgraded to 14.10 and then to 15.04, and then when failing to send a file over bluetooth to my computer, I found out Visible was off. I turned it on, and it worked. However, after a few minutes, it had turned off again. I can't find a setting anywhere to automatically turn off after N seconds. It would make sense to have that. If there is, it should be accessible through Bluetooth settings. If such a settings doesn't exist and once turned on bluetooth visibility is supposed to remain on, then there's some bug which is causing it to randomly turn off. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1353129] Re: [REGRESSION 2014-08] Volume up/down keys, and printScreen key, have stopped working
if someone treats you steadily disrespectful there's no single reason for continuing the business. Because there's no single excuse for mistreating other people. That's funny. Have you ever considered how dismissing tons of bug reports just because they don't meet some rigid criteria is actually disrespectful to those who took the time to report them, if not to users who simply suffer from them? And in the case at hand, even to people (and I'm not talking about myself, obviously) who are actively trying to help triage it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1353129 Title: [REGRESSION 2014-08] Volume up/down keys, and printScreen key, have stopped working Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: All of a sudden, the volume keys from the keyboard have stopped working. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1353129] Re: [REGRESSION 2014-08] Volume up/down keys, and printScreen key, have stopped working
Teo, could you please confirm whether or not you've used hibernate again and if it has triggered the bug? You mention later that it happens randomly, but I just want to make it very certain that it can't be reliably triggered by hibernation... rather than assuming anything. I'm sorry, I can't confirm nor discard that. I can definitely say that resuming from hibernation does not _systematically_ trigger the issue, that is, it is not a _sufficient_ condition to trigger the issue, but I can't tell for sure whether it is a _necessary_ condition. In other words, I have certainly hibernated and resumed many times without observing the issue, but I can't tell for sure if every time I observed the issue it was after resuming from hibernation. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1353129] Re: [REGRESSION 2014-08] Volume up/down keys, and printScreen key, have stopped working
along with if you remember when the computer had last been rebooted before you did last reboot you mention in this bug report. Sorry, no idea. I usually only suspend and resume. I only shut down when I have to carry the laptop somewhere, in which case I either actually shut down or just hibernate. Regarding pure reboot (as opposed to shutdown) I almost never do that unless I'm forced to (e.g. when the prompt to do so becomes really annoying or when the OS is misbehaving beyond telling).
In reply to @Teo, for the future, you can also report bugs against Ubuntu itself without pre-assigning any package at all. I'll try next time. I gave up trying that long ago because 1) $ ubuntu-bug ubuntu dpkg-query: no packages found matching ubuntu 2) The Report a bug link used to point to an annoying page full of bla bla bla, and I got tired of sorting out the path of links that would eventually land you to the page for reporting a bug (I see it nows points directly to it) 3) A few times I tried by doing ubuntu-bug linux (or whatever other package) from the terminal and then check the I don't know radio button instead of the named package, but the result was the same as choosing the given package.
Why do you think asking to upgrade your BIOS is rigid criteria? Asking to upgrade the BIOS is fine. Refusing to look into the issue unless the BIOS is updated is ridiculous. Updating the BIOS is a tremendously cumbersome (and risky) process for a user whose main working OS is Ubuntu. Hence most users just won't do that (I won't), which means the bug will expire. And in the vast majority of cases, there won't be a good reason for that because (1) it's extremely unlikely that the issue is caused _solely_ by a bug in the bios; (2) even if updating the bios makes the issue disappear, it doesn't mean that the issue is a bug in the bios; actually it may mean that it is an issue in the software triggered by some peculiarity in the bios that is not even a bug, in which case the issue SHOULD be investigated with the bios that triggers it, in order to fix a bug rather than make it invisible (and perhaps resurface later); (3) even in the event that the bug is triggered by a bug in the bios, chances are that the OS is not responding correctly to the incorrect behavior of the bios, i.e. there could be a bug in the bios _and_ the OS, and finally (4) I remember Ubuntu being announced as linux for human beings or something like that: if you really want it to be that, you must assume that there are a lot of machines out there with outdated bioses, and some of their human being owners just won't ever update a bios (or have an idea of what it is) until the day when a friendly popup appears allowing them to do it as easily as installing software updates (let's forget for a moment that even upgrading Ubuntu can brick a computer). So, given that the vast majority of bios bugs can almost certainly be worked around by the OS (just think of other OSes that work on machines with the same outdated bios and don't exhibit the issue), the OS should either do that or provide a really stright-forward way to update the bios. The latter may (to some extent) be not in the OS developers' hands ; the former definitely is. That's me! Yes, I guess, but I was referring more specifically to another contributor who has been accused of being rude. Err, besides that, accepting files via bluetooth IS broken. Even though Receive files over bluetooth, at random times it starts rejecting all files again. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1401491] [NEW] Bluetooth icon shows a little lock, and there's no indication of what it means
Public bug reported: All of a sudden the Bluetooth icon on the top right notification area shows a little lock icon (see screenshot). By clicking on the icon, there's no way to figure out what the icon means. After turning bluetooth off and on, the lock icon disappeared. Then, no matter whether I turn bluetooth on or off, no matter whether visible or not, the lock icon never reappeared (the bluetooth icon, without a lock, greys out as expected when bluetooth is turned off). I thought the lock may mean that Receive Files via Bluetooth was turned off in Personal File Sharing settings (see also #958661: that setting should be in the Bluetooth settings), but even after enabling it, the lock was still showing up (until I turned off and on bluetooth). After disabling file reception again, the lock icon did not reappear. I suspect that the icon appeared because of an attempt to send a file to the computer which was rejected, because it appeared just after that but: 1 - if that is the case, then an indication should be given, e.g. when rolling over the icon or when unfolding the submenu. You should ALWAYS be able to know what the an icon means 2 - if that is the case, there should be a way to dismiss the notice, other than turning off and on bluetooth 3 - a toast (or whatever it is called) notification should also be shown at the moment the file is rejected If the lock is instead supposed to mean that file reception is turned off, or that visibility is turned off, then it's not working properly. If it means anything else, it is not working properly either, as I haven't changed any other setting when the lock disappeared. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 958661] Re: bluetooth suddenly rejects all transfers (worked yesterday)
Unbelievable. Now, after 2 years and a half waiting for this to be fixed, and without hearing a thing from any developer, it TURNS OUT THERE'S A SETTING for this... IN THE WRONG PLACE, which you would never find unless you google for it. In Personal File Sharing there's a checkbox Receive files over bluetooth. All you need is to enable that. - this setting should be under Bluetooth Settings instead of (or in addition to) under Personal File Sharing. - it should be accessible from the notification icon on the top-right corner of the screen -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bluez in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/958661 Title: bluetooth suddenly rejects all transfers (worked yesterday) Status in bluez package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I often send image files via bluetooth from my android phone to my ubuntu PC. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1335409] Re: [Acer Aspire V3-571G] Mousepad stopped working
This policy of having bugs expire just because they are not reported on the latest bios is ridiculous and must be changed. Machines are out there with non updated BIOSes, and Linux must support them. Other OSes support them. The probability that a given bug will disappear by updating the BIOS are close to zero, and even if that is the case, that doesn't mean that the bug is CAUSED by a bug in the BIOS. The default assumption should be that the bug is in the sotware, unless there a proof of the contrary, because that's what happens in 99.99% of cases. Plus, a decent (and safe) way of updating the BIOS from within Ubuntu without relying on booting from other OSes is not available. Until such a thing is provided, you can't expect Ubuntu users to update their BIOS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1335409 Title: [Acer Aspire V3-571G] Mousepad stopped working Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: I disconnected the external usb mouse and keyboard from my laptop, and the builtin mousepad has stopped working. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1335409] Re: [Acer Aspire V3-571G] Mousepad stopped working
Bugs don't expire because they are not initially reported on the latest BIOS. They expire because they remain in the Incomplete Status for too long. Don't play stupid, please. I know they expire because they remain in the incomplete status. The wrong policy I'm talking about is that they are systematically put in the incomplete status every time they are reported with an outdated bios. And that's what eventually causes them to expire, because me updating the bios is just not going to happen (until it can be done easily and safely in Ubuntu). If linux upstream thinks you have a bug due to an outdated BIOS... The problem here is that bugs aren't put in the incomplete status because somebody upstream actually thinks the bug is due to an outdate BIOS, nor even because there is the slightest reason to suspect that, but simply because the bios is not updated. That is, it is ASSUMED that every bug that is reported under an outdated bios is due to the outdated bios. That's a ridiculous assumption. If one had to assume something (until any evidence is found), it would be safer to assume the exact opposite, as that has much more chances to be the case (i.e. the bug be in the OS). If the goal is to fix the highest number of bugs, to have Ubuntu work better, to provide a better UX, and to support the widest set of hardware, this strategy is obiously wrong. The requirement to update the BIOS should be made only when there is a strong reason to suspect that the outdated bios is related. And note that EVEN in the extremely unlikely case that the bug exists only on the outdated bios, that does not necessarily mean that the bug is DUE to a bug in the bios. The bug may be just triggered by some legitimate (i.e. non-buggy) characteristic in the bios that has been removed in the latest version, hence not triggering the bug in the OS any more, which doesn't make it less of a bug. Also note that I reported this bug against Linux just because I have no idea what package it may belong to. This happens pretty often to me, and I guess to many other users, because ¿how on earth is an end user supposed to figure out what package a bug belongs to? (no need to reply with a link to the guide, I already read that, it doesn't help in most cases) So, because of this policy of marking as incomplete every linux bug that happens to be reported on outdated bios, bugs like this don't even reach the stage where somebody more knowleadgeable than the reporter targets it to the correct package. While I haven't surveyed all the vendors in a while, I'm not presently aware of vendors explicitly providing in-Ubuntu/(other linux vendor) methods of updating the BIOS. That's exactly why you can't depend on bios updates to discard bug reports. Whether or not that depends solely on vendors, that makes updating BIOS for Ubuntu users risky and complicated. I won't take all the time to create another OS's boot disk and do all that stuff, and especially the risk to brick my computer, just to check whether or not a bug I've found in Ubuntu disappears, when there's a 0.001% chance that that may happen. So, while the reality remains that updating the BIOS for an Ubuntu user is complicated as hell, putting that barreer to bug reports (i.e. requiring bios update before a bug report is taken into consideration) means: - failing to investigate and fix a huge lot of bugs that actually would turn out to be bugs in the OS (whether it's Linux or whatever other component of Ubuntu), letting them remain unfixed for ages - and yes, perhaps in a ridiculously small percentage of cases, save developers the unnecessary work to triage an issue that is actually due to a bug in the BIOS Hence, it is expected you update your BIOS. The more time you spend complaining about updating, instead of either updating or asking for help on doing so, is just causing a longer and longer delay of your problem being resolved. Padon, MY problem? It's not like I'm complaining for some product I've bought, nor is it like I'm asking for a support which I may get if I deserve it, or if I've done my job. The bug affects the community of users. I simply happen to be one person who found it and reported it. I could do a greater effort, that's true, I could update my bios and add that tiny, most-probably-insignificant bit of information by confirming the bug on the newer bios. I could as well learn C/C++ programming and the Linux code and help fix it, for that matter. That's not the case. I reported the issue, that's how far I can go. Now you can choose whether to use that information to try to improve Ubuntu, or discard it for a silly reason. You're choosing the second. That is causing a longer and longer delay of everybody's problem being solved. Regarding bios updates being offered only for other OSes by vendors. There has been a long history of hardware vendors not giving proper support for linux. And of the linux community filling that
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1250488] Re: [Acer Aspire V3-571G] USB hub stopped working on a given USB port (would work on any other port). Reboot fixed the issue
Same shit as usual. I take my time to report a critical bug, which cripples the OS entirely. Instead of looking into it, it gets changed to incomplete just because the original reporter (i.e. me) is not going to undergo the risky procedure of updating the bios, so the bug expires and get ignored forever. This way Ubuntu will never become a stable, usable OS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1250488 Title: [Acer Aspire V3-571G] USB hub stopped working on a given USB port (would work on any other port). Reboot fixed the issue Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: I have two USB ports that I usually use interchangeably: to port A I connect the mouse, to port B I connect a USB hub (to which I connect a keyboard, printer and other devices). Suddenly (probably after resuming from a suspend), the USB hub stopped working when connected to port A. It would work fine, however, if connected to port B. When I say the hub stopped working I mean that any device (even a keyboard) wouldn't work if connected through the hub. I exchanged ports dozens of times and 100% checked that: - mouse and keyboard would systematically work fine if connected directly to any of the ports A or B - the USB hub would systematically work fine only if connected to port B - the USB hub would systematically fail (i.e. no device connected through it would ever work) if connected to port A Now I've rebooted, and everything works as expected again: the USB hub always works fine whether I connect it to port A or B. I thought this was something physical until I rebooted and found out that everything works again. This is absolutely ridiculous.
