[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1015496] Re: Disable-touchpad key does not work on Dell Vostro V3450

2013-10-26 Thread Tomek
Hi,

As I've mentioned in my previous comment, the key press and release
events go through the kernel and are received by the X Server and the X
Server understands the events well. So this seems not to be a kernel
issue at all. Am I right? If so, this bug could well have been closed as
invalid instead of expired.

Also, as I've alredy mentioned in the report (the first comment), the
issue wasn't present on Debian, so this could be another hint that this
has nothing to do with the kernel. Besides, this was the reason why I've
reported this bug here, in the Ubuntu bug tracker.

I could report the bug for a different component (KDE maybe?), other
than linux, but I don't wan't it again to be reported against wrong
component. And my knowledge in this field isn't broad enough to guess
what component it could be.

Title:
Disable-touchpad key does not work on Dell Vostro V3450

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hello,

The problem is that the 'disable touchpad' function key does not work
in Ubuntu for Dell Vostro V3450 (please note the V before the number -
as far as I know, the Vostro without V before the number is another
  model from Dell).

I've noticed this already in the previous Ubuntu release (11.10) but
thought it'll be fixed by now. After upgrade to 12.04 nothing has
changed. I've, of course, searched for similar bugs on launchpad, but
I believe they are not the same issues as mine. The problem is similar
to bug #753641, but that one has been marked as a duplicate of already
resolved bug #550625 and my issue is not resolved. Also bug #760142 is
similar, but I don't think my touchpad uses the ALPS driver.

On my V3450 the 'disable touchpad' key is Fn+F3 combination. Pressing
the combination doesn't disable the touchpad in Ubuntu. It also
doesn't display any pop-up on the screen (as photonic wrote in a
comment to bug #753641, in his case a notification pops up displaying
graphic of a crossed-out touchpad - it doesn't happen on my system).

However, I'm sure that the laptop's hardware does inform the system
when the combination has been pressed - in my laptop I have an orange
led placed between the touchpad and the keyboard. When I press Fn+F3
the LED turns on, suggesting that the touchpad is disabled. When I
press Fn+F3 again, the LED is being turned off.

Another hint - after I bought the laptop I've installed Debian
wheezy/testing on it and there the Fn+F3 combination worked as
  expected.

2013-10-26 Thread Tomek
HA!

I've just launched my laptop, which I've recently updated to the latest
version of Kubuntu and guess what - the key started to work!

It even triggers a freedesktop.org notification, that the touchpad has
been disabled/enabled.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1015496] Re: Disable-touchpad key does not work on Dell Vostro V3450

2013-08-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Tomek, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder,
but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel,
please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is
fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

Have a look at bug report 1193147. Maybe, you can change
/lib/udev/rules.d/95-keyboard-force-release.rules and change the line

ENV{DMI_VENDOR}==Dell Inc.,
ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}==*Latitude*|*Precision*, RUN+=keyboard-
force-release.sh $devpath dell-touchpad

to

ENV{DMI_VENDOR}==Dell Inc.,
ATTR{[dmi/id]product_name}==*Latitude*|*Precision*|*Vostro*, RUN

the combination doesn't disable the touchpad in Ubuntu. It also
doesn't display any pop-up on the screen (as photonic wrote in a
comment to bug #753641, in his case a notification pops up displaying
graphic of a crossed-out touchpad - it doesn't happen on my system).

Another hint - after I bought the laptop I've installed Debian
wheezy/testing on it and there the Fn+F3 combination worked as
  expected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1015496] Re: Disable-touchpad key does not work on Dell Vostro V3450

2013-07-26 Thread Tomek
It didn't help.

However, I've looked a bit deeper into this and found out that I
actually can check whether X receives any events from this combination
of keys (Fn+F3). And it does. X not only receives the key press event,
but also the key release event (without the changes suggested in the
previous post). X even knows what this event is for - it knows that it
is a touchpad toggle event. However, the touchpad isn't being
disabled.

I used xev command for this, and below is the output I get when pressing
(and releasing) the Fn+F3 combination.

KeyPress event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x621,
root 0xbb, subw 0x0, time 208513, (44,123), root:(1230,652),
state 0x0, keycode 199 (keysym 0x1008ffa9, XF86TouchpadToggle), same_screen
YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x621,
root 0xbb, subw 0x0, time 208677, (44,123), root:(1230,652),
state 0x0, keycode 199 (keysym 0x1008ffa9, XF86TouchpadToggle), same_screen
YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

At the moment I'm using the latest version of Kubuntu - 13.04.

Title:
Disable-touchpad key does not work on Dell Vostro V3450

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Another hint - after I bought the laptop I've installed Debian
wheezy/testing on it and there the Fn+F3 combination worked as
  expected.
