[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2014-06-08 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
The upstream kernels are only available for x86 /x86_64. The Powermac G5
is equipped with a 64 bit PowerPC CPU.

I cannot test upstream because I cannot find a daily cdimage for PPC64.
This is not an AMD Macintosh but a PowerMac (iMac G5).

With the development kernel from above, the link just never becomes
ready.

The wireless driver did work before this bug was originally opened.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2014-03-07 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
I was planning on reinstalling, and I left my iMac on while I went and
got install media, and it decided to boot all the way up.

With the installed kernel, I'm getting:

[ 210.709352] b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 508.1084 (2009-01-14 01:32:01)
[ 210.783377] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

and the WLAN never enables.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-11-19 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
My systen doesn't use GRUB, it uses yaboot, and it doesn't obviously
offer a previous kernel.

I'm pretty sure I tried both of the kernels it did offer when I tried to
boot, and both failed.

Does the system boot if you select the prior kernel from the GRUB menu?
You should be able to boot the stock kernel, and remove my test kernel
instead of re-installing.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-11-12 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
Please note that before I installed your kernel, my system did boot just
fine, and was running the most recent stock kernel as of the opening
date of this bug (2013-09-01). In fact, upgrading to that kernel is
what killed my wireless, which worked fine before I did an apt-get dist-
upgrade.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-10-28 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
My system no longer boots to a command line, so no, I cannot. I'll have
to reinstall in order to keep testing this.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-10-15 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I performed a cherry-pick into Ubuntu kernel 3.2.0-55.85. Would it be
possible for you to test the stock 3.2.0-55.85 kernel without the
cherry-pick to see if the black screen issue is a new bug?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-10-04 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a Precise test kernel that includes a cherry pick of commit:
4c374af5fdee4bc6b4f5ea96c1a0f0ad7d3566be

This kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1219368/

Can you test this kernel and post back if it resolves this bug?

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = In Progress

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-14 Thread Julian Wiedmann
Christopher:
no, the commit *is* in Saucy [0] and (if it fixes this bug) would need to be
SRU'd to Precise (and Quantal).

Nikolai:
you'll need to verify that the patch actually helps (build test a stock
ubuntu precise kernel with this patch applied).
Then step through How does the process work and use this bug for the SRU
request.
When in doubt, ask kernel-t...@lists.ubuntu.com for further guidance.

[0] finding a commit by searching the author name through gitweb?! wow, yikes
:). It's there, just ask git.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-11 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
When I use my daily CD of Saucy Salamander from 3 days ago, it crashes
the kernel (I get an oops).

See attached log.

Process:

Boot lubuntu live CD.

apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
rmmod b43
modprobe -v b43

Notwithstanding, jwiedmann's comment in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1219368/comments/9
looks clearly applicable to my situation.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-11 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Julian Wiedmann, (please correct me if I'm wrong here) commit
4c374af5fdee4bc6b4f5ea96c1a0f0ad7d3566be is in upstream linux-stable
[1], and not in Saucy [2]. Hence, if this commit fixes the issue
(cursorily it would seem so) wouldn't it not be an SRU, as Saucy's
kernel freeze isn't until Oct. 9 [3], but a standard kernel update for a
development release?

Nikolai Alexihof, you may want to ping the Ubuntu PPC mailing list [4]
about a walkthrough to build a powerpc test kernel with the above commit
to see if it addresses this issue, as I have no powerpc kernel build
knowledge.

2013-09-10 Thread Julian Wiedmann
Seems like you need a SRU [0] for

commit 4c374af5fdee4bc6b4f5ea96c1a0f0ad7d3566be
Author: Aaro Koskinen aaro.koski...@iki.fi
Date: Sat Aug 18 07:34:15 2012 +

powerpc/dma-iommu: Fix IOMMU window check

Checking for device mask to cover the whole IOMMU table is too strict.
IOMMU allocators should handle mask constraint properly for each
allocation.

The patch enables to use old AirPort Extreme cards on PowerMacs with
more than 1GB of memory; without the patch the driver init fails with:

b43-pci-bridge 0001:01:01.0: Warning: IOMMU window too big for device mask
  b43-pci-bridge 0001:01:01.0: mask: 0x3fff, table end: 0x8000
b43-phy0 ERROR: The machine/kernel does not support the required 30-bit
DMA mask

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-10 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
@penalvch: I finally found a daily build for PPC at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily-live/current/ and have
downloaded it but not yet tested it.

@jwiedmann: Do I need to do anything to get an SRU? That wiki link
pointed me to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelUpdates which
implies that action needs to be done, but I don't understand what, if
anything, I need to do in this context.

I'll report back on the daily as soon as I can.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-08 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
I cannot test upstream because I cannot find a daily cdimage for PPC64.
This is not an AMD Macintosh but a PowerMac (iMac G5).

The upstream kernels are only available for x86 /x86_64. The Powermac G5
is equipped with a 64 bit PowerPC CPU.
