[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad T420] Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2014-02-06 Thread Tino Werth
I have the same problem.
Notebook: Lenovo T420, Intel HD Graphics 3000

After starting Ubuntu everything works fine. If I use Google Maps in
Chromium/Firefox or working some time with LibreOffice the graphic
begins to stutter. Even if I only move a window for one end of the
screen to the other it jerky (anything but smoothly).

Yesterday I updated the BIOS to 2013-07-05 (latest version) but it did
not help.

The only thing that helps is a reboot.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Best
 Tino

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
shuhao, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is
available for your BIOS (1.46). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-11-25 Thread Shuhao
Yeah this is definitely a mesa problem. Any idea when this will be
pushed to saucy's repo? I have computers waiting to be upgraded to 13.10
due to this instability.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-11-19 Thread Eric Branson
This should be confirmed (it is not affected by the kernel version), and
marked as affecting Saucy and Trusty because they both use the Mesa 9.2
series so both Saucy and Trusty get updated to Mesa 9.2.3 as noted
upstream.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-15 Thread Greatquux
Sorry to re-open but I wanted to include one more detail - either a
recent update fixed this for me, or a recent change I made to my BIOS
settings (changing my fan speed from "normal" to "turbo" in my
motherboard BIOS) has made me unable to reproduce this hang, even after
long periods of scrolling complex maps in Google Maps. I can definitely
raise the temperature nearly 10C by doing this, but with the fans on
turbo (and this only seems to make it slightly louder) the hang does not
occur. Hopefully this will help anyone else with these issues - always
try to cool the processor as much as possible!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-15 Thread Kenxeth
Fixed in Mesa 9.2.3 (out today), the upcoming Mesa 10.0 release, or Mesa
master.

This fixes the Sandybridge-specific GPU hang where i915_error_state (aka
/sys/class/drm/card0/error) lists an IPEHR of 0x79050005.

If you experience a GPU hang and your IPEHR is not 0x79050005, that is a
different bug.

Thanks again for your patience!

A hang in the bsd can't be a mesa issue. Also since it's inside the
batch it's not one of the known kernel issues. Please upgrade libva
(only thing that uses the bsd ring) and if it still fails fail a new bug
against lib.

Yes, IPEHR of 0x0b160001 suggests that your bug is actually:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54226

It is not this bug.

  of 40fps..

This slowdown happens and also makes my computer generally pretty
slow. Thermo maximum has not been tripped (I know, and I actually
  underclock while playing these games).

I'm not sure why this is happening. It only happens on 13.10. I have
bumblebee installed. I used both cards to play the game and the same
  thing happens

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-15 Thread Greatquux
I just re-installed oibaf's PPA and reproduced a GPU hang in Google
Maps. It didn't crash the first time, but I know that if I continue
scrolling in Google Maps it will bring down the whole system. However
here's the message from syslog and the associated i915_error_state file
will be attached.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-15 Thread Yjcoshc
Created attachment 88969
i915_error_state

Still hang after playing hedgewars for nearly an hour, but it doesn't hang
continuously, just one time. Dmesg shows:
[ 3929.521951] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* stuck on render ring
[ 3929.521963] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* stuck on blitter ring
[ 3929.521967] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state

I notice that my error message has "blitter ring". Is it a different
bug?

i915_error_state file after causing "render ring" hang in Google Maps

This is the i915_error_state file after updating my system with the
https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/ PPA (and
restarting X of course) and scrolling around a lot in Google Maps in
Google Chrome.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-15 Thread Yjcoshc
I have compiled Mesa 10 master in /opt/mesa and added a conf file in
/etc/ld.so.conf.d.
Now glxinfo shows:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 10.0.0-devel (git-69b425e)
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL context flags: (none)
This is the first time I have built mesa.

Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

Status in The Linux Kernel:
  Fix Released

I recently upgraded to Saucy. I noticed that everytime I play

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-06 Thread Mrsteven
I can confirm that the patches in Comment 20 help a lot. In my case the
gpu hung while playing MegaGlest 3.7.1, SuperTuxKart 0.8 and sometimes
also while scrolling in LyX and Firefox 17.0.9 (using KDE with
compositing enabled).

I haven't tested LyX so far, but the freezes in the other programs seem
to be gone. Of course this does not mean that there can't be another bug
somewhere (which might be the case in Comment 23).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-02 Thread Greatquux
I still experienced a hard crash of the entire system when bringing up a
complex page in Google Maps, even with this installed. So I've taken to
disabling all acceleration (NoAccel "true") - I definitely do not see
the issue then (although of course scrolling in Google Maps is slower,
it does not crash the machine).

Title:
Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

Status in The Linux Kernel:
  In Progress
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I recently upgraded to Saucy. I noticed that everytime I play
something like Counter Strike Source, my graphics performance drops
down to something like 15fps while normally it is locked at a max FPS

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-10-14 Thread Shuhao
So I think I have an idea of what is happening..

Here's my sensors output:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+56.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)

thinkpad-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1:1978 RPM

coretemp-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +57.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +50.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +53.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

pkg-temp-0-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+57.0°C

The "high" temperature is at 86C. I notice the performance drop at
around 87C. (Still need to try to reproduce it again...)

The CPU clock frequency is not modified at 87C. The characteristics of
the performance drop is consistent with a lowered "Clock modulation",
something I've seen in programs that controls the CPU on windows.

Now this did not happen on a previous version of Linux. Previously when
I hit about 95C (which apparently is quite common for these laptops
after about 1-2 years of usage), the CPU frequency will be restricted to
800MHz, which would be the lowest frequency available.

So I'm not exactly sure what the best fix for this would be, or where
the "regression" happened. While 95C does not seem like a good idea, it
is actually quite easy, at least for me, to hit 87C on these thinkpads,
even after cleaning it out, replacing the thermal paste (multiple times
with no difference in results), and so forth.

I will try to get myself a fan mat and see if that helps things sometime
soon and confirm that this is indeed the issue.

How do I tag?

But I cannot test upstream kernel as it would just freeze my DE upon
boot. Not sure what's going on.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-10-08 Thread Shuhao
I'm trying to test this out now. Keep in mind this may not be a kernel
issue and could be something else wrong with the stack.

Here are some interesting stuff from dmesg:

I'm also affected by this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1041790
and the work around does not work for me. This only happens when I'm playing
games (entire screen locks up)

I use 2 monitors, too.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] [NEW] Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-10-07 Thread Shuhao
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to Saucy. I noticed that everytime I play something
like Counter Strike Source, my graphics performance drops down to
something like 15fps while normally it is locked at a max FPS of 40fps..

This slowdown happens and also makes my computer generally pretty slow.
Thermo maximum has not been tripped (I know, and I actually underclock
while playing these games).

I'm not sure why this is happening. It only happens on 13.10. I have
bumblebee installed. I used both cards to play the game and the same
thing happens
