[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1247806] Re: Kernel resetting SATA link

2018-05-09 Thread Eugene Jones
Yup changing the SATA mode to 'Compatibility' solved this issue for me.
No more error logs indicating failed SATA

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 13.10 I encounter kernel reseting SATA link in connection
with temporary system freezes (KDE lags). Such a bug has previously
  been reported here

here https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/10/26/11 for same hardware and in
connection with unresponsive KDE. For me it occurs if the system is
  under high load.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1247806] Re: Kernel resetting SATA link

2013-11-08 Thread Andreas Hohenegger
I figured that for me the error messages disappear if you set the SATA
mode to 'Compatibility Mode' instead of 'AHCI' in the BIOS. Ubuntu still
booted after this change. I could not find a relation to the Optimus
Graphics switch as reported at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/888764.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1247806] Re: Kernel resetting SATA link

2013-11-06 Thread Andreas Hohenegger
I should have mentioned that I see the error message also if the NVidia
Optimus BIOS option is disabled in contrast to what was reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/888764 . The error
message is printed about every second even if the system does not
freeze, so I can't say with certainty that it is casually related to the
freezes I encountered. It pretty much renders dmesg useless. Trying to
exclude an hardware error I have also tested with older kernels v3.9 and
an ubuntu 13.04 LiveCD. With all of them I see the error message.

I can already say that dmesg prints many of the same error messages with
the mainline kernel 3.12.0-031200-generic . I will report back in case I
don't observe freezes anymore.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1247806] Re: Kernel resetting SATA link

2013-11-04 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 13.10 I encounter kernel reseting SATA link in connection
with temporary system freezes (KDE lags). Such a bug has previously
  been reported here
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/888764 for the
same hardware but older software. This behavior has also been reported
here https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/10/26/11 for same hardware and in
connection with unresponsive KDE. For me it occurs if the system is
  under high load.

In such situations dmesg says repeatedly:

  [23391.818508] ata4: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x404 action 0xe
frozen
  [23391.818513] ata4: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
