Title:
  Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
The system does not wake up successfully after a suspend, and it causes a
hard crash recoverable only by holding the power switch for a few seconds. As
the crash appears to cause the disk to become read-only, I don't know if this
report contains the logs from the exact time of the crash. To illustrate what
it looks like, I've attached an image of the screen as it appears if I try to
login via any of the other terminals )ctrl+alt+f3/f4):

I'm using Wave encryption. As well, suspend works in a live
  environment.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-05 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Just tested with 3.11.0-12 as per the instructions, the issue is still
there and the filesystem becomes readonly after a resume. As noted
earlier, this version works fine when booting from a Live USB stick.

Do you need this from the kernel I am booted in just now
(3.11.0-15-generic) or from 3.11.0-12?

Ritesh Sinha, neither. As per the article, it would need to be in the
latest mainline kernel - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-05 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Will I need to install Precise over the current release? That is tricky,
since I am using this computer for most tasks. If there is a way to
backup and restore my system exactly like it was before, I can try it
out over the next weekend.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-02 Thread Ritesh Sinha
I have just tested suspend while booting through a live environment, and
it works as expected. To test this, I created a file, selected suspend,
waited for a few minutes and then hit the power button to resume. The
desktop came up and I was able to continue editing the file.

The kernel version in the live environment was 3.11.0-12, and I'm
currently on 3.11.0-14 just now.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ritesh SInha, thank you for testing the live environment. One thing that
would be helpful to test is if you install 3.11.0-12 in the installed
environment, does suspend work? Hence, could you please do this with the
files at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.11.0-12.19/+build/5088396
following instructions from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds ?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-01 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Hello Christopher, Happy new year! I have just tested with the latest
ISO image from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/. I
did so by booting the ISO via GRUB2 using the instructions provided
here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot#Creating_the_GRUB_2_Menuentry.

The same issue still persists when I select Suspend or trigger a
suspend by closing the laptop lid, and the only way to recover is a hard
reboot. I will now test the mainline kernel and let you know if I still
face this issue.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-01 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Bug exists with v3.13-rc6. However, I'm beginning to suspect that this
may not be a kernel bug but could be related to the self encrypting
drive that is on my system. My laptop is configured to use Wave
encryption that requires a password to unlock the hard disk drive on
hard reboots.

I found this: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-
drives/f/3534/t/19433295.aspx

While the discussion is around Windows, I noticed that my corporate
Windows 7 image is set to Hibernate rather than suspend when the lid is
closed. That means that either Suspend is not supported (or turned off
by default on the corporate image). This is probably done to make the
system more secure. As this is a new laptop, I've been using Ubuntu
exclusively for development and had not used the Windows system for any
work.

Do you still want me to update the tags or should I dig around a little
more to see if I can find reports of hibernation failing on self
encrypting drives?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ritesh Sinha, thank you for performing the requested tests. Unfortunately, I'm
not terribly familiar with wave encryption in combination with linux, and a
cursory view of the the website suggests suspend is supported (assuming in
Windows)
http://www.wave.com/products/embassy-remote-administration-server-self-encrypting-drives:
Drive locking is supported in sleep or standby (S3) modes

Despite this, would it be possible to have a off domain build with no
encryption to see if this would change anything?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2014-01-01 Thread Ritesh Sinha
Unfortunately this is a corporate laptop and Ubuntu is not supported by
our IT team who are based out of the US, and they've shipped me this
laptop (I'm in the UK). They have let me install this on the condition
that I maintain it myself, and that I do not turn off the encryption,
although I'm fairly certain that I cannot turn it off without domain
admin privileges.

Do you think it might be worthwhile to see if I can reproduce the bug by
booting via a USB stick?

Ritesh Sinha, thank you for your comments. It wouldn't hurt to test a
live environment suspend as that would provide a vital data point for
this problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265191] Re: Dell Latitude E6430 Suspend/Resume failure

2013-12-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ritesh Sinha, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains,
please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel
available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc6

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

** Description changed:

- The system does not wake up successfully after a suspend, and it causes
- a hard crash recoverable only by holding the power switch for a few
- seconds. This is similar to the issue described in:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1201038 with one
- change.
-
- The previous bug appears to have been resolved by the reporter updating
- the bios from version A03 to A11. However, I am on the latest BIOS
- version offered by Dell (A13), but still face an issue when suspending
- the computer. Just to be sure, I reflashed the BIOS with the latest
- version offered on the Dell website.
-
- Output of dmidecode -s bios-version: A13, dmidecode -s bios-release-
- date: 09/02/2013
-
- As the crash appears to cause the disk to become read-only, I don't know
- if this report contains the logs from the exact time of the crash. To
- illustrate what it looks like, I've attached an image of the screen as
- it appears if I try to login via any of the other terminals
- (ctrl+alt+f3/f4)
